Labor voter here. While I do welcome the idea of Australia one day becoming a Republic, this is certainly not the way to get people on board with the idea. The Senator needs to follow the rules like we all do. Plus, everyone needs to calm down, the greens only ever pull these stunts to get attention and distract from more important things like the Indigenous voice to parliament and cost of living. But what does Australia have? A strong military to overthrow the British? Is it self sustainable with food? resources etc? In regards to the comment made by the MP. The Aboriginals and First Nations peoples deserve more than this. I have personally worked with members of the Indigenous community and they are building their path to be respected and respectful members of the local Governments and Councils. They have worked bloody hard to get into positions of power and authority. Which I am in admiration, due to their dark and terrible recent history. As a Genocide survivor myself. I know the only way to get change to occur is through mutual respect, acknowledgement of process and protocols. What MP Lidia has done is nothing short of a disrespectful representation of what the Indigenous community truly stands for. Community and recognition.

@@gf5617 What else ?? The states wasting tax payer's money on State "Governors" as Representatives of the British Crown when just one GG in Canberra should be sufficient , even though that GG should be the Australian people's representative and actual Head of State as President .
The six state flags are all still British colonial blue ensigns and basically all look the same ---- no individuality! The national flag is ok for now , however the Union Jack should be removed once we are a Republic and simply replaced with an Aussie symbol or just left plain blue with the Federation star taking pride of place.
(Obviously we will always remain a member of the Commonwealth since the majority of countries in the Commonwealth ARE Republics.)
I also hate that our Naval ships are designated HMas ---- Her/His Majesty's (British Monarch's) Australian ship , along with all the other British regalia badges and emblems of our military and police. Australia doesn't even have its own supreme military medal , instead it had to retain the British military's Victoria Cross.
Australians love to promote ourselves as world beaters and patriotic yet after 121 years since federation we are still technically British Crown subjects under the British Monarchy and our official national emblems display this to the rest of the world.

I don’t know how politics works in Australia but a bankrupt cannot sit as an MP in the UK. Senator Thorpe’s time would be better spent paying back money owed to Indigenous Business Australia & the tax man. Ms Thorpe may not like the oath she was given to read but it is the law as it currently stands in Australia. It is what it is. Her statement that the Queen is a “Coloniser” is incorrect as she did not personally colonise Australia.

We too are a colony, in our case of the USA.
New Zealand, Egypt, Malaysia, Guyana, Belize (Central America)! , Kuwait, Kenya, Nigeria, India (as all know), among others globally, were once all British Colonies. Hong Kong was a special territory of the UK until being handed back to Communist China 😬 in the late 1990s. Puerto Rico is not technically a US colony but an unincorporated US territory that is neither a US State nor a sovereign nation (like Guam island) …. Passport, Medicare, Emergency Services and other amenities are American, as is the citizenship of ppl born in PR.

As for our US citizenship, is a 2nd class citizenship since we cannot vote for the president unless we move to the states even though all US laws could be and are applied in the island without the ppl's consent.

Aquellos que han favorecido y luchado por la independencia han sido desprestigiados, forzados a abandonar el país, encarcelados y/o asesinados a no ser que quieran hacerlo de manera tal que su mensaje no llegue a las masas.
Los que favorecen la estadidad lo hacen por dinero, por recibir más fondos federales que ellos puedan manejar con o sin estadidad y se conforman con eso.
Los demás, aproximadamente la mitad de la población viven cómodos sabiendo que no tienen que lidiar con los problemas de inestabilidad política que otros países latinoamericanos han tenido que lidiar. De recordarnos esa posibilidad se han encargado muy bien tanto el gobierno de EU como el de PR, diciéndonos que sin EU, PR se va por un precipicio y así hemos llegado a donde estamos hoy día.
El no tener que depender de mulas y pagar miles de dólares para que un traficante de seres humanos nos ayude a entrar en territorio norteamericano, arriezgandonos a ser deportados y/o encarcelados y llamándonos illegal aliens ya que tenemos ciudadanía estadounidense resulta ser muy convincente para no luchar por la independencia.
Cuento largo corto, la situación es una muy muy compleja y no se resuelve simplemente entrando a una urna de votación el día de las elecciones y escoger una de las opciones que has presentado amigo o amiga.

We too are considered a commonwealth or "ESTADO LIBRE ASOCIADO". In English, Free Associated State, which is a misnomer since PR is neither FREE nor ASSOCIATED much less a STATE. The same way Australia answers to Britain, PR answers to Washington. Same way this Australian senator is required by law to swear allegiance to the queen of England as opposed to only the constitution of Australia, Puerto Rican senators in the island are required by law to swear allegiance to the colonizing governtment of the USA and its constitution.
Puerto Ricans are allowed under US law to choose a governor and a resident commisioner who represents the island in Washington. That governor can't make any relevant decisions unless Washington says he/can. The resident commisioner which is the closest we have to a senator can only vote just as long as that vote doesn't make a difference at the end. If it does make a difference it will not be counted.
Again, I'm sorry but that sounds like a colonial situation to me.
