Problem is that many politicians are also obstructed by the limitation of what the public allows them to say. Say one word that the public doesn't like and all the empty cans start to rattle and his or her effort to conduct a certain policy is over without any real debate.
That's because Atkinson is simply portraying pure truth. He's not trying to hide anything and tying himself up in knots. The exact same way the priests were when covering up the sex abuse charges. But of course he's a highly refined, educated, gentleman and that helps but mainly the first reason.

Homeless people want shelter more than freedom of speech to preserve whatever dignity and self respect they have left. Atkinson has never been in their shoes and can't understand them. I am therefore not surprised that he would despise Mr Bean as the moronic character he portrays from his position of privilege. Perhaps that why he is so good in making others laugh at him too. In the same measure, he is unable to see the perspective of victims of offensive speech. He advocates freedom of speech to give more of the offensiveness to get victims to become more tolerant of it! In another word, fight abuse by giving more abuse, a dangerous suggestion. He is talking from the white privilege of the majority not on the receiving end of offensive language. I wonder why he's called wise.
True that! Also love the irony of his career in general, in that one of the wittiest and most intellectual actors I've ever seen is most famous for a character that can barely mumble.
He was Edmund Blackadder before Mr. Bean. Prince Blackadder (the first incarnation) was rather dumb, but the other incarnations were very witty. Blackadder is brilliant comedy, in some episodes both Fry and Laurie are present, Hugh Laurie being in most of them.
Methinks the only way Mr. Atkinson would end up in a political position was if the UK reintroduced National Service targeting competent and capable individuals to be placed into a position of leadership within the government for a few years at a time. Clearly, few level-headed, intelligent, successful, capable and trustworthy individuals ever enter politics thus this may be the only method to actually create a viable long-term system of governance for this country!

@Basile Dex ah, yes. The east, the beacon of free speech. China, North Korea, Japan, Russia, the middle east: truly places where your opinion can be shared and not at all censored. Free speech is either non-existent under draconian laws or is being undermined by the continously declining inability to accept insults. There is no country above this issue. This is a worldwide problem. The west has it easier: the woke-mob doesn't come even close to the horrors of being a dissident in the east.

'Speech' does not refer to verbal expression only regarding this law. Mr. Atkinson has 'said' plenty without saying a word all during his career. 'Mr. Bean' managed to express far more in pantomime than he could ever have said verbally. The broader meaning of speech is individual expression.

Nothing can or will change, unless and until, the majority acknowledge this is a totally corrupt system based on privilege, greed, gross injustices against the poor, sick, vulnerable etc. Propped up and enabled by mainstream media owned and controlled by billionaires. Plus, state broadcaster BBC, the propaganda-wing of the UK Establishment, war industry etc. Only a rightwing party like Blair's New Labour is allowed to govern. The successful right-wing media demonising and toppling of Corbyn was led by state broadcaster BBC. The UK is - in effect - a one-party state. Fake democracy. The energies of the many good people working for a fair and just society should be directed at fighting for a republic, no matter how long or how hard. In another word, fight abuse by giving more abuse, a dangerous suggestion. He is talking from the white privilege of the majority not on the receiving end of offensive language. if you've never seen "blackadder" (skip season one), you should definitely give it a try. he is as gifted a linguistic comedian as he is a physical one. truly one of the greatest comedians in the history of comedy, i adore him.
@@drillcreamBlackadder being one of them one of his great shows, though never personally watched it myself (maybe I should for once lol), was weird him starring in a show written by Ben Elton The Thin Blue Line, not sure of its ratings back then but I loved it haha.
Well done, sir! Well done!
Think you very much Sir. There is still great people on this planet.
Thanks for this Mr Atkinson. I hope this gets everywhere!
This was an amazing speech. So well written and delivered.
Need more celebrities speaking about this
AMEN! 🙏
What an insightful and powerful speech. Thank you!
Scrarily true nowadays. This speech will never age.
Wow, such wise words. Such a shame we are heading down this road once again.

@James Eckert Perdition...at least!?!
I'm not even religious, but these bastards (all thru the West) leaders, corporations etc...this has been their plan.. they'd have us back in the 1880s if they cd.
Smash the working class, the right to assemble... Ring any 1930s bells?

Funny and tragic, I think, that it is not politicians, not law enforcement, not journalists.. but comedians, that seem to have become the first, and last, defense for free speech and common sense in this world. Well said, Mr Atkinson.
It has been this way for a long time. Comedians have usually served as the "Canary in the coal mine" during history, with jesters at medieval courts being an example of this. If the jester couldn't make fun of the king, then the king was a tyrant. It's quite sad that we haven't evolved past the need for this though
Because their own free speeach understanding is different from someone verbally abusing people and calling for their death based on the colour of their skin or religous belief.
Zelensky was a comedian his whole life and is single handedly destroying a nuclear dictatorship.
@@xFlared you confuse a comedian with a puppet. most of his comedy rely on insulting the nations around ukraine (that is hate speech). educate yourself
@@pandemonium0211 Doesn't change the fact that Ukraine was illegally invaded and thousands of civilians dies. It's an independent country, let's not forget that.
I always found this man's diction to be legendary. MR.Bean spitting facts better than elected officials..
Mr. Bean himself, I wondered why that name seemed familiar.
Maybe Lord Blackadder, please...
To be fair, that bar is resting on the ground and half-buried. Still... yes.
Not bad for a guy who used comedy acting as a way to cure an overwhelming stammer...
Please tell me, when was the last time you ACTUALLY seeing/hearing an elected official spitting " FACTS " ?? 🤔........ you must be quite old, aren´t you ?? 🤣
I´m "only" 57, but I really can´t remember....... 😬😂
And yes...... Mr. Atkinson is quite a legend...... and my respect for him just made a huge leap upwards for his speech....... 👍🏼
Here here and God Bless Rowan! And thank God that I’m not in the UK anymore.
If only there were more people like Rowan Atkinsons in this country.
Everywhere really
We are here, we just need to speak up loudly enough to be heard
especially in leadership positions
He might be a one-off but his characters are everywhere. 😅
Britain could do what Ukraine has done. Realise that their is wisdom strength and intelligence in their funniest comedians.🤔
I never miss an opportunity to listen to Mr. Bean's speech. The art in his delivery of speeches is titilating.
Watching him in a lot of his tv and movie appearances you can forget how intelligent and eloquent he really is. Just shows how good he is at acting and he is also one of the funniest people alive. His grasp of comedy is unreal and he understands it in a way most of us cannot.
He's more like Johnny English in this speech but smart
@@mattpowell6291 you mean _Edmund Blackadder_ then
@@razor1uk610 yeah absolutely
I had to lookup the meaning titillating.
Great speech thank you Rowan! Open debate and free expression is the only way.

Intelligent, well thought out and so true! Thank goodness for such honest dialogue. Politicians need to listen to this!!!
Very well said. Thank you.
Thank you Mr. Atkinson for this timely and rare discussion about intolerance. Yet another example of our society inescapably devolving into a future shock darkness.
Brilliantly expressed, Atkinson recognizes that then most vulnerable to censorship and prosecution for speech crimes are normal people. Contrast this with that clown Graham Norton who boasted that cancel culture doesn't exist because some famous people still were allowed to speak against cancel culture in the press. Atkinson, thoughtful and intelligent. Norton, willfully ignorant fool.
Timely… yeah. The video is from 2013. 🫡
@@nothajzl Is it ANY less timely today? The SJW have accelerated this devolution!!
I rarely listen to full speeches and presentations in most media nowadays. I listened to every word this man said and I agree wholeheartedly. I love this man.
Its important to understand that the situation is much more nuanced than Mr. Atkinson lets on, we should not be wholeheartedly vying for /everyone's/ freedom of speech, because some speech is overtly harmful and has been proven to incite violence.
@@worm_intelligence_agency Freedom of Speech *is* for all views though.
Free speech is a human right, and such rights are universal. Even to the absolute lowest of society.
Does that mean you have to agree with what they say? Of course not. You disagree vehemently with what someone says, while still affirming their right to say it.
@@neil_nile159 Okay, let's start with understanding that we already don't protect ALL speech. Slander and Libel are both crimes, and certain phrases (e.g., "Fire!" in a crowded theatre) have legal repercussions.
I would wager that you don't actually have a problem with any of what I said above, and the answer is usually because those crimes are clearly harmful acts, stopped to protect people rather than to stifle anyone.
What I'm arguing is that certain types of speech have been proven to incite violence towards specific groups, and it's THAT speech that should be penalized, much like my examples above No one is arguing for the complete removal of free speech, or disagreement
Sugar daddy's ? 😉
@@neil_nile159 the point where your speech hints at or straight up asks for violence is the point where it gets icky, if your freedom of expression is making others less free there's a problem
Excellent comment from the wonderful Mr A, on one aspect of the unbalanced 'legalasese' madness of our times!
An Intelligent Man, Talking with Absolute Sense. Such an Entity wouldn't last more than One Speech in the "House of Commons". We know this to be true, because those that Challenge the "Narrative", are swiftly suspended or dispensed with.
This is starting to be a problem all over the world. It is very dangerous what is happened. Congrats for this speech, Mr. Bean! ❤💋
And why do you think that is. Globalists,...and they are winning.
Nope, this is a problem in very specific countries...
