    Hi Mary thanks! I just added pastels to my toolbox and have been using colored pencils. I bought the exact wheel you are using off Amazon for $7 or so and I can see how it will help with blending and mixing in either medium. I've been guessing a lot off on another sheet of paper and it gets tedious.

    I am leather finisher. sometimes the colour I make comes quite wrong and I just need to know what colour is to be added as a composite colour or if I come wrong in a colour wheel then which colour can give me the right direction to get my actual tone.

    • @marymedranogallery
      @marymedranogallery  5 років тому

      On one side of the color wheel there is a way to move the wheel to show what will happen to a color when you add another color. If you have the wheel in front of you, you will see what I am talking about. I hope you can get your hands on one. Hopefully this helps.

    • @marymedranogallery

    Yes thank you does the color wheel show what not to mix to make mud?

    • @marymedranogallery
      @marymedranogallery  2 роки тому

      Haha. Well, generally mud (which can be beautiful) is made by mixing several colors together. It's why teachers often tell their students to keep their palette simple. So, although the color wheel does not show what not to mix to make mud you can now avoid making mud by keeping your mixes simple, meaning two colors for starters. Once you can mix those without creating mud try adding a third color in small doses. That's the key!

    Hi Mary,
    I have ordered a wheel. While waiting for it to arrive I have two questions..If I want a certain color, say salmon pink, can the wheel tell me what doses of the three primary colurs to use. Another question: why not just mix the primary colors in the right proportions to get any color instead of buying lots of individual color tubes ? Am I correct in saying that three tubes for the primary colors plus white plus black making 5 is really all I need. I intend to adopt acrylic.
    Thank you for your help.

      John King look up the paintbasket channel the videos there are very helpful in what to mix

    • @gossamerwings3632
      @gossamerwings3632 7 років тому +1

      After i saw this video, i saw another video called Color Wheel Tutorial - How To Mix Paint. That one shows how to use the primary colours to get a lot of other colours and is good for beginners who don't want to spend a lot of money on too many paints, but after you're an intermediate, you could buy the other colours or if you're going to do a lot of painting.

    • @marymedrano9608
      @marymedrano9608 6 років тому

      To answer your first question, the color wheel will get you close to your salmon color. It does not tell you what proportion of colors to mix to get salmon. When you begin mixing with say, red, yellow and white you will be close. From that point, you need to make informed decisions based on the color you see.
      Part of the fun of mixing colors is the nearly infinite variety of colors one can make. There are not nearly that many colors in tubes at the art store.
      A good beginning for paint mixing is the three primaries plus black and white, as you say. If you want a whole bunch more variety buy a warm and cool of each primary plus black and white. You can paint for a lifetime with just these 8 colors.
      Buying other colors in tubes is not only fun, but they often cannot be mixed using primaries.
      Hope this helps.

    • @marymedranogallery
      @marymedranogallery  2 роки тому

      I don't think it really matters because I've heard plenty of artists talk about their paint order and they are "all over the map". What I've always heard is that whatever order you choose you should stick with it. Personally, I lay mine out left to right: white, yellows, reds, blues, burnt umber, black (optional)

      @@marymedranogallery i know about all over the map! its hard to pick a method when there are so many!

      @@jimdimitrios1 Don't stress about it. Just pick one and stick with it. There is nothing magical about my system or anyone's system for laying out paint. It's for convenience and familiarity. When you're painting you don't want to think about where a particular color is. You just want to be able to put your brush in it without thinking too much. Good luck!

    This is beautiful and the information I need. I am scheduled to film a topic on what 'not to wear' when filming for UA-cam and I will be touching on color and I would like to endorse your channel and this specific video if that's okay. Thanks, Mary!

    This has been 6 years ago. This is very helpful for beginners like me. I am starting to paint. Where did you get that color wheel? Does it tell you what color combination makes a particular color?

      Yes, there are color mix possibilities. i.e. If you add yellow to black you get green. It's on the back of the colorwheel.

    Hi Mary I've got your note saying that you have put in the link (to part two) but I can't see the blue link in the comments box of part one of 'How to use the colour wheel' I would expect to see it under where it says Published on the 3 Dec 2013. Maybe you didn't save changes?Good Luck . . . Andy

    Where can I get one? I have a sister in Los Angeles, I can ask her to get one, I am not sure if I can find this kind in the Philippines.
