I’m not sure 2 inch straps are sufficient for this 5 series tractor in case of an accident. I would prefer 3/8 inch chain with ratchet binders on all four corners.
The night before Thanksgiving is one of the biggest bar nights of the year. What am I doing? Staying home and watching Good Works Tractor videos and saving my $$$ for a 2 Series. OK, I did enjoy one cold snack while watching .... Have a Happy Thanksgiving. 🦃
I use chains in conjunction with round soft slings. Round slings are very cheap and rated, at the slightest bit of damage they get cut up and thrown away. Chains are very easy to inspect where as straps not so.The chains are are fitted with sling hooks not shortening hooks so the go straight into the D rings and round slings.
So that’s your new tractor! Very nice 👍 That’s a great truck and trailer set up. Seems that dove tail might get close to scraping the ground backing down into your parking area. I really would like a super duty! Next truck! Keep on tractoring!
What's up man. Actually, that one is a customer's tractor. The one in this link is my new one. ua-cam.com/video/Ub_NE7Z3KsM/v-deo.html It does look close to bottoming out in the video, but there's more room than appears fortunately. My list of complaints about my Super Duty's is pretty short. Can't imagine driving anything else. Thanks for watching and Happy Thanksgiving!
Nice trailer, but too light for what I haul. Case 580 and Bobcat T870, both of which are 13,000lbs with no attachments. 24' dual tandem 9T gooseneck. The only way you can handle that weight with bumper pull is with a military hitch on a large dump truck. And there's no way to keep my weight under 10.000lbs towed which is automatic class A. Never mind the 26000 GCW, it's the 10000 towed limit that will get you. I use straps when hauling my 5000 lb tractor for short runs around town, but never use less than chains and binders when hauling the heavy stuff.
Great content Courtney !!! I appreciate you taking the time to share !!! You and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving !!! God bless you my friend !!!! Eddy Very nice rig too !!!!!!
Courtney, have you ever considered using chains and binders? I know ratcheting straps do a great job but I am hesitant to use them. I was hauling a CAT skid steer through Vegas one time and had a ratch snap. I know binders can break but I have heard people have had more issues with ratcheting straps than chains. I am sure everyone has their own reason for using what they do...any thoughts?
Yeah, have totally considered, but chains are a pain, mess up the paint, and either too tight or too loose. I spend extra money going through straps, put on extra straps for every load, and they're simply easier to work with. I'm sure it costs me more money than chains would, but my customers are worth it :)
Good Works Tractors i would agree with you. I worked for CAT in Las Vegas and handled all the logistics for the construction trade shows. They are tricks using chains and binders to not mess up the paint, like using pieces of carpet or rubber tubing. Whatever works for you and is legal, I think what ultimately matters. Kinedyne makes awesome straps, I think a lot of truckers use them and they last a long time. Just my 2 cents..
Yeah, we use rubber and/or plastic pads on any type of sharp edges to protect from breaking. I replace mine in the spring and fall. Always buy extras to keep on hand too.
@@GoodWorksTractors You can still use the axle straps with chain/ratchet binders. That would prevent chains damaging paint. It also looks like Ur investing in straps as needed at least.
I've also considered that route and may try them out now that I have almost infinite tie down points with this new trailer. It makes life so much easier.
I would move your spare tire. Probably put it in between the frame rails down locations. It sure didn't miss the ground by much when you came out of your shop area.
Question:? First hope you and family having a great and safe Thanksgiving. Ok on hauling cab tractors I have heard (I have one) it is better if possible to have rear facing forward? Front glass or all is safety glass and stone hits it is much cheaper to replace rear glass than front as hood has to be removed and easier to replace. Ever had a or heard of this as will be trailering mine come spring with STRAPS and see what you think. Keep up the good vid's enjoying and informative.
What an awesome trailer, looks very well engineered. Does it pull as good as it looks? Bet it does.. 1 question, Mr. Superman, are those ramps aluminum, or do they have some sort of break over counter balance? You showed little effort parking them, LoL! Happy Thanksgiving!!
Haha, thanks for noticing the "guns"....kidding! Those ramps do have spring assist which makes life way easier. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours Belinda!
With a 14,400 gvwr what is the payload on the trailer? I'm looking to haul a JD 2440 to jobs. With loader, backhoe attachment and fluid in the tires, it weighs 10,400 according to a gravel pit scale. I'm thinking 14400 gvwr might do it, although that is a big, heavy looking trailer?
This was around 5,000 lbs actual weight, however the GVWR was downrated. You could have it rated for at least a couple thousand pounds more legally. So, you'd be good.
I think the DOT is more concerned about your load being secure than what type of securement equipment you use. As long as the straps are load rated for your load, you won’t have any issues with the DOT. Courtney is right. Most truckers use straps for this type of equipment. If you are hauling a CAT D10, that’s a different story. I would imagine if the DOT sees a trend across America with issues with straps, the rules may change. A little common sense goes a long way when hauling anything.
To secure equipment, U should be cross tieing load, ie: rr axle to lr of trlr, lr axle to rr trlr like Ur trying to tear machine apart. But its not me pulling load when it falls off trailer into a bus of Nuns.....
Many schools of thought. I knew that before I posted. Hundreds of safe, secure loads with zero hassle by DOT, police, etc. I have no interest in hauling loads unsafely and always look to improve my processes. Thanks for watching.
@@GoodWorksTractors I've been watching Ur channel awhile and can't say anything bad, U always explain in a down to earth honest way. I just see a teaching moment and take it, or at least throw an idea out there. The better/secure Ur equipment looks the less chances of getting those dOt invites and exams. So with keeping under 26k and assuming an 8400ish operating weight of the superduty (about what mine weighed in every day outfit) and the weight of the trailer how much load capacity does that leave ya?
CDL goes by combined GVWR. GVWR of th F250 Super Duty is 10,500 lbs. This trailer's GVWR is 14,400 lbs. I could have gone 15,500 techinally, but went lower for a couple reasons. First, if I ever haul with my F350, the GVWR of that truck is 11,500 lbs. So, I went 1,000 lbs lower because of that. Then, I went down an extra 100 lbs just to have a little bit of buffer room. I gotta check, but I think the trailer estimated weight is 4,950 lbs with its current configuration. 14,400 lbs minus 4,950 lbs leaves 9,450 lbs which is plenty of weight for the types of tractors I typically haul. The one in this video is probably the heaviest tractor I've ever hauled. Most would be 1, 2, and 3 Series with an occasional 4 Series.
@@GoodWorksTractors well and the 15% of the trailer weight technically being on the truck, so yeah a good buffer, surprised a 30ft+is under 5k empty. Those Monster Ramps make loading things of all sizes really nice.
Yeah, the hydraulic dovetail was a wish list item, but added some crazy amount of weight...like 1,500 lbs or maybe more. Really wanted it, but I wanted the capacity more. Monster Ramps were a very nice compromise. It's just that you need to potentially deduct 5' of deck space if you need to be able to use the ramps to offload.
@@GoodWorksTractors the hydraulic doves are super nice for loading drawn equipment and give ya some departure angle back to negotiate some small swales. Did some work for a land management company and they had a small frame 6r and 8ft Rome disc that went on and off really nice of a dual wheel PJ with a Hyd dove.
I learned u can get a bigger trailer that would put you over the cdl 26k limit but have the manufacturer derate the trailer and give you a derated sticker. If u ever get a cdl then ud already have the trailer, and get it rated back to original
Wrong way to the down strap should go across the back and back and same at front but pulling forward that way you stop all side movement and Bach and forward totally ie 1 safe loud watch that that is Howe he does it
If you set your parking brake in your truck before loading, you won't get that shift or lurch when your front tires hit the ramp. Also, another one here for chains. I have a 4044R and I use 5/16 chain on each corner. Yes, I know it is overkill, but a nuclear explosion wouldn't knock it off the trailer.
@@GoodWorksTractors He could have, your trailer is a smidge longer, but I NEVER set my parking brake and it drives my wife crazy and that is exactly what mine does when I load. It is subtle when you see it, and you went up slow, where I am normally flying up the ramp so it shimmies back and forth a bit on the parking pawl.
Haha, yeah, I definitely know that shimmying action you're talking about. I'll tell you though, I sure love loading on this trailer. Monster ramps are pretty sweet, a big improvement from my old skinny removable ramp trailer.
