    What a wonderful story showing Starfleet officers as regular human beings struggling with their purpose in life as opposed to idealized heroes who usually have it together.

    I like how, instead of just launching into a conversation about life and command, it starts with the engineer bitching about someone else.
    Great touch, great writing.

    Man... The pain on Lance's face as he struggled with his decision, and when he made the choice to forego rescue. You could *feel* how much it hurt him -- well done, Chuck. I know Starfleet has a directive about answering all distress calls when able, but that dang Prime Directive got in the way because the shuttle came from a pre-warp civilization.
    Yet I cannot also help being SO FREAKING EXCITED to hear my own voice at 10:35 and 10:45, and also seeing my name in the credits as "Helm Officer"! Was so freaking stoked when Josh asked me if I'd be interested in recording a couple of lines. So thankful for even a little opportunity to be in a Trek fan film. Josh was cool enough to ask because he knows how much I love Avalon Universe!

    In TOS I'm sure Captain Kirk and his crew would've found a way to save them. The transporter has unique properties, especially in keeping them buffered without contact from the rest of the crew. I know life doesn't have happy endings but life is life and deserves to strive not take away.

    Great story! You two held out attention with your conversation for EIGHT minutes! However, the non-interference policy would be exempted if he had directly beamed them to sick bay and anesthetized them, then returned them to their planet, or discretely repaired their ship (even if that era starship did not have transporter to sick bay function, they could quickly tranquilize them right as they materialized on the transporter pads, as their short term memory would not recall the transport). As long as their (Valiant's) tracks were covered, no one would be the wiser. But I get it, and then the poignancy of the situation and decision would be lost and the story diminished.

    I loved the episode, as it deals with the hardest part of having a "Prime Directive"
    But an event like that would be a big reason why someone would want to step down as Captain.
    If this were "real", he would be plagued by nightmares for the rest of his life, knowing that those men did not need to die, simply for our principles to be upheld.
    By saving them, they can never go home, and the Captain likely gets a court marshal, but he could sleep at night, knowing he did all that he could do, to help strangers. It might turn out to be the best decision he ever makes in his life.
    As Warf once said, "There are always options"

      Even saving the two astronauts and never letting them go home afterwards, so as to avoid cultural contamination, would affect the development of their society.
      What happens when their society sends another shuttle to investigate the loss of the first one, and discovers that there are no bodies aboard it? Imagine the alien abduction conspiracy theories that could result from such an inexplicable event, and how such theories could affect the society’s views towards alien cultures.

    • @joshuairwin2016
      @joshuairwin2016 2 роки тому +4

      This was filmed during the height of Covid Lockdowns in 2020. Having the actors together was impossible. The film was purposely written this way to be something we could do during Covid. It wasn’t “open comms” there are secure channels in Stafleet. The Tunic the actor wore was the only one available at the studio on the day of filming.

    • @thelefthandedshooter5760
      @thelefthandedshooter5760 2 роки тому +2

      It wasn’t meant as an insult but constructive criticism. It was clear they were both on the same starship so having the actors together would have made more sense. The COVID issues certainly make the choices more understandable.
