Congrats to everyone who's now got the chorus stuck in their head for the rest of the day!
Lives.............. ....... . ............... I have always hated....hated this song. Thank what ever invisible man in the sky for the theme song from the Jeffersons. My go to song to drives crappy songs out my melon. It's like plastic bags rattling in the back seat of a car with no AC so you HAVE to roll the windows down. Ugh....there I said it. Ty for reading who ever.
Yeah... it's at once a dick move, and a good thing.
It's permanently etched in my brain for at least half my life!
every time i sing that chorus the fake scottish accent it gives me gets stronger and stronger. like some kind of magic curse
@@XcaptainXobliviousX It's Scottish magic!
Scottish... Very very Scottish. And it is still an awesome song in 2021.
Ignorant American here: I couldn't figure it out but both Scottish and Irish are awesome in my mind 😎
I remember when they used this song ALL THE TIME anytime there was ANY connection to Scotland
American here so where, exactly in England is the Scotland area? In The North ?
@@Isleofskye "Highlands"
Thanks.
This is one of those songs that's so ingrained in the british consciousness, everyone knows it by rote, but no-one admits it until its time for a mass singalong.
In Sweden to hehe.
So there is a British country roads then.......cool
Canada loves the song as well LOL
Same in Australia
From the US, it''s a song I can tell people they know The Proclaimers and they won't even know til I start the song
I love the proclaimers . They were told by record producers to drop the accents..thankfully they refused . Great reaction 🙂
Honestly, compared to their speaking accent, they did
I love hearing accents in songs - the Beatles have pretty strong Liverpool accents and David Gilmour pronounces words so perfectly with his English accent.
They have a song about dropping the R's :)
Oh the nostalgia. I used to work at a board game store and this was an inside joke song - one of us would go "Daa dah daaa" and from the back of the store you'd hear the response "Daa dah daaa"... then the whole store would bust out "Daa dah da, da dah daa da dah da dah da dah daaaaa". Good times.
I have always loved this song - it has an awesome positive message, good energy, and it is fairly easy to sing along with. If it doesn't put you into a good mood, there is something wrong with you.
This is a massive sing along song over here. The boys are also intrinsically linked to football, particularly Hibernian. Worth checking out Sunshine On Leith being sung by the fans.
Especially in the version sung after winning the Scottish Cup… ;-)
Should listen to the video of the fans singing it after the cup win.
Hibs fans absolutely smashing the sing a long is the finest crowd moment in football, ney sports history
Sunshine on Leith the musical is pretty good too
Scotland, and they loved to flaunt it! ;D
They were visiting my country (Norway) early on, and when a journalist asked them a question, they answered him in their own dialect of the English language. So he did the only thing he could do, he started asking his questions in Norwegian, no matter how they replied... In the end they all laughed, and they got the interview done, at last... :P
That's very funny, good on the Norwegian journalist for responding with humour. Even as an Australian who only speaks English, some dialects/regions of the Scottish accent can be hard to understand, so different to our own accent where we barely move our tongues and mouths.....
Watching this has just made me want to go on a good night out here in U.K. When this song comes on the room will cheer, people stamp their feet or clap in beat, they will march on the spot...and of course the whole room will sing with great enthusiasm! It always happens & I love that 💛
This song has a lot of special meaning to my family. It was the song we helped my brother do his physio to after his spinal injury
awwww
This song is such an anthem - in Ireland as well as the UK and something I love and admire about them is how they give this song their everything every time they perform it. Edinburgh 50,000 is a great example and you just have to watch the crowd to see how much this song means to so many people. I’ve a soft spot for “Letter from America” with its emigration theme. “Sunshine on Leith” is just beautiful
This is a pure Scottish accent...love it
Love The Proclaimers! I would recommend their song Sunshine on Leith next.
My heart was broken
Sunshine on Leith is my fave Proclaimers song. I was lucky enough when I visited Scotland to see them in concert in Dunfermline.
@@0KeepRockin0 you claimed it,you saved it
I first heard this when David Tennant was celebrating his and the teams departure from Doctor Who :D It was amazing.
This was our wedding song in 1996. Still going strong after 25 years!
This song is played at Scottish wedding after dos and all parties, it’s worth watching Imagine Dragons performing this at Tea at the Park, it will give you an idea of how crazy people get when this is played. It’s Scotland’s alternative national anthem.🏴
"Sunshine on Leith" is their best song musically imo, that would be my vote your next Proclaimers song. "I'm on my way" is another fun poppy kind of song a little more in the vein of I'm Gonna Be. Both good options, but "Sunshine on Leith" would make for a more interesting reaction.
Since you bring up the romantic aspects of this song, Way back when it came out , my husband told me that this song says everything he wanted to say to me and even now any time we hear this song he always turns it up and sings along, and he really doesn’t express himself like that otherwise.
"Sunshine on Leith' is the song by the Proclaimers everyone needs to listen to
And a great film!
Nobody asked what havering means!
In Scottish English, haver (from the Scots havers (oats)) means "to maunder; to talk foolishly; to chatter," as heard in the song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers.
I always thought it meant, throwing- up.
@@brianb8060 you're obviously not of Scottish descent then 😂
@@ValerieKerr11 I've got a little. I'm mainly, German-Irish. 🍺
I would say it means to dither as well as to babble
@@brianb8060 That's what I always thought lol
Saw The Proclaimers at the Greenbelt festival over 25 years ago. No experience quite like a few thousand people in a field singing and bouncing along to 500 Miles.
The Proclaimers are MASSIVELY underrated!! You gotta check out more of their work! In particular I’d recommend Streets of Edinburgh, one of their more recent hits. They are still phenomenal, and still don’t get NEARLY the recognition they deserve.
I used to have this stuck in my head, when my girls were in college. And now, I have it stuck in my head again. Stuck in my head to the point that I watched "Benny and Joon" for the first time, and tortured my husband by making him watch it with me! Yes, Mr Lboyd, this is the most doggedly romantic thing you could sing to a girl. lol!
When the album first came out in the US they appeared live on Lettrrman (this clip) and were terrific. I picked up the album and then was surprised it didn’t really break on the airwaves… until years later when used in Benny and Joon.
I love this song always have since it came out. They are from Scotland. When I go to visit Scotland they played this song everywhere.
Nice throwback for me. Brings back memories.
I remember this song! It still sticks in your head all day (and night) because it's just a catchy, fun, silly piece of music that people still jump up and down to when they hear it!........at least my crowd does! Love this!
This song was used in the Johnny Depp movie "Benny and Joon" after Wynona Ryder played this song for the director. He thought this quirky song was perfect for the quirky movie.
And yes they are from Scotland. The brothers are actually twins. If you here them in interviews, they have a strong thick Scottish accents which makes the song even more iconic.
I watched a video about this song and if I remember correctly the song was pretty much a flop until Benny and Joon and then it just blew up.
I'm pretty sure it was Mary Stuart Masterson (Joon) who was responsible for the use of this song in the Benny and Joon soundtrack. Wynona Ryder wasn't actually in this movie, having dropped out after her breakup with Depp before filming started.
”I told Mary Stuart Masterson to bring in her favorite music, as motivation in the scene where she’s painting,” explains Jeremiah Chechik, who directed Masterson as a schizophrenic and Johnny Depp as her oddball suitor in the film. ”She brought tons, but when we started playing the Proclaimers, I just thought, Man, this is too perfect - a romantic song about someone who will walk a thousand miles, or act crazy, or do anything for true love.”
- Entertainment Weekly, article by Melina Gerosa, 1993
The Proclaimers are Craig and Charlie Reid, Scottish twin brothers. I’ve been listening to this since it first came out in the late 80s, and it never gets old.
This song is always stuck in your head for days after hearing it. I can listen to this over and over.
This song makes me happy because my mother loved it. And I miss her. So when i hear it I smile. 💛💛💛
And my How I Met Your Mother re-watch begins now.
they aren't identical twins... but they're just about as close as you can get without being so. their talent is just wonderful. i love their music.
This song is responsible for my love of Scottish accents
This is an "our song" for me and my girl. She's a trans lady, a very lovely one. But because of that, she has a great emotional strain at times, like she don't belong anywhere, no one loves her or cares for her. And I often sing or turn on this for her, to remind her - no matter what, I love her and I want her to be happy. And that I'll do anything to keep her that way - happy and loved. I'm always out there for her, and this song is a great reminder of that.
That's so awesome and sweet. :D
shes a man bruh
@@dalejay *sigh* Eh, dude. To me it's about a person, soul. Physical needs can be easily satisfied knowing what "buttons" to push. Mind is far harder to sate. Besides. A soul has no gender, perfection has no color. Love comes in all shapes and sizes, and you, all of you, in immortal words - "never know what you're going to get."
@@Yezhanium don't waste your breath on a comment like that, terfs aren't interested in listening to words or meanings. They're all very doggedly stuck on the first page of a century-old child's textbook, and don't want their brains infected by anything beyond yesteryear's paradise of sexist conformity. Not worth your time explaining.
For every pissy little jab wot makes you sigh, be heartened to know there're a thousand much stronger souls who'd gladly meet it in the opposite direction. :) As well as proud cunts like myself who'll always be the "that guy" to call out the bullshit.
And make no mistake, it is all bullshit. The information is so easily out there and has been for fucking ever. If anyone's ignorant on it while connected to the internet, it necessarily means they haven't made the attempt, and it's nobody else's unpaid internship to drag 'em out of the muck. I'm not saying information's bad, I'm just saying never feel like you owe it. :)
Hope that's re-encouraging! :D
@@Yezhanium that would he because a soul doesn’t exist.
This has been in my top ten since Benny and Joon. Such a fun song.
This was my first CD, good memories. At 13, I was a little surprised to hear the Scottish protest songs mixed in with what I thought was going to be more poppy music. Cap in Hand and What Do You Do? still pull an emotional response from me 30? years on.
At parties across the UK - especially New Year - this is played and people sing it collectively in the same way they sing Auld Lang Syne to bring in the New Year.
Reminds me of the show, How I Met Your Mother. Best friends Ted and Marshall met in college and whenever they went on a road trip, they would play this song on repeat. I think in one episode, years later, the cassette got jammed in the car cassette player and they had to listen to it for 500 miles or so.
Good times!
One of our songs that always get the whole audience up on their feet. Scotland loves the Proclaimers!
Try "I'm on my way", which is another upbeat number, or "Sunshine on Leith" (Leith is the port of Edinburgh).
This song was a massive hit here in Ireland and Great Britain when it came out, it's still played at parties and nights out here in Ireland at least 🤷♀️
P.S he's giving over almost all his wages. ............this is a life partner he's singing too !
You should look for them doing it in concert. The crowd is having a heckuva good time!
one of my favorites presented on my birthday. play this at a highland gathering
Fab video of them playing T in the park on you tube, I love all their songs but sometimes they can be hard to understand as they use many Scot’s words. Sunshine on Leith or Scotland’s story are probably my two favourites
Love the Proclaimers, Super fun band who is always very much them. My second favorite after this one is "There's a Touch". super upbeat and the video is hilarious
Everyone in Scotland knows this song and love to sing along. Also listen to "Letter from America" by the Proclaimers.
Thank you UA-cam algorithm! You are delightful Mr Lboyd! What a great find, so pleased. Keep being awesome!
Fun song, got a resurgence in popularity from the movie Bennie & Joon with Johnny Depp, Mary Stuart Masterson,
As a hardcore Benny and Joon fan, (and of this single) I must say they sound wayyyy different here.
I always had the "Never Going To Give You Up" audio/visual disconnect phenomenon where the *last* thing I expected was to see two super lanky lads in the music video.
This performance matches up. Now my brain hurts less.
P.S It's a shame about raisins.
I've always loved their Scottish accents. Still a great anthem.
MrLboyd I just want to tell that you have one of the most soothing and kind voices plus a sweet face. Love to listen to you as you talk during your videos
Love this song. Awesome reaction!!!
Best song ever and if you watch their studio version they sound exactly the same. Very talented artist
The Proclaimers are Scottish twins, and this song is so popular in Scotland it is like the unofficial Scottish anthem. It is sung at football games, birthdays, in pubs and nearly every occasion.
This song drove me nuts, it was catchy but once you hear it makes you hum for hours after
This song was played in the movie “Benny & Joon” with Johnny Depp, filmed in my hometown. Sweet movie too.
I love the smile on your face during this song .
It's Scottish, totally Scottish from Scotland., love from Scotland.
I just watched the video just to hear that great song again. I just loooove it
Such a good vibing song. Always a fun one to listen to.
This is definitely not the greatest song or greatest vocals ever, but it makes me happy when I hear it. It makes me smile.
This is such a bar/pub classic!
Got me surprised by watching this group. YOU have so many other awesome songs from those years. PJs and popcorn ready
just got tickets for their gig in Scotland next year - LOVE THEM!
love this group and the song is wonderful. We road trip and play this every trip we take. It is just happy
So you've never heard this song before at your age this is a classic
Honestly, my there's nobody in my life I've not infected with this song, Andi hope they've passed it on...
If you sing this to someone, later you can say: “…and that kids, is how I met your mother”.
Heard this in my car last week and had to make sure there wasn't a Proclaimers tape stuck in my cassette deck. Then I remembered it's 2021 and I don't have a cassette deck.
pretty accurate, I sang this to my daughter's mum and burnt her cds(i'm old) with it before she got a kid in the gut
Good to see another Boyd enjoying the Scottish music. I can see you getting into it.
This is a British classic
Love it every time I hear it
I love this song, have loved it since it first came on US radio.
It's just a fun, upbeat song that makes.me.happy when I hear it 😊
This was me and my high-school sweethearts song
I've always loved this song, it's just such a positive and happy vibe
On of the best song that anyone could ever be karaokes!!!
Great, fun song, so catchy, perfect sing along🙂
For an interesting juxtaposition, you should listen to "500 miles" by Peter, Paul and Mary.
Great idea
I love your voice, I could listen to that all day
I dunno why this song brings me so much joy. I know you already do this, but definitely give the studio version a listen.
When this song was big I was camping with a group. The counselor of this group was from Australia. I asked her what Haverin meant. It was a longing. I like that word.
I would recommend "Letter from America" to be your next song from the Proclaimers.
This is a British anthem. It feels so good to sing together, everyone marches in place singing to each other. I remember it playing at uni and you can immediately spot the foreign students as they were so confused by the sudden transformation of everyone else. They are so fun live too
Classic British song
For more great songs by The Proclaimers try "Sunshine on Leith", "Sean", "I'm on My Way" or my personal favorite, "Jean".
Jean, oh Jean! You let me get lucky with you!
I love this song. I have a guy who I'm pretty sure would walk 500 miles for me and this is a good reminder that I need to be doing more.
SCOTLAND #1 LEGENDARY SONG BRO
You just have to experience this with a live audience it's just MAD. Everyone gives it their all. The PROCLAIMERS DON'T HOLD BACK THEY ARE ENTERTAINING.👑👑👑👑
On that last note, 30 years ago in August my wife and I chose this as the recessional at our wedding. Lol!
Scotland 🏴 They were born in Edinburgh. Probably the most popular Scottish duet. Charlie and Craig Reid.
Haven't heard this song in a zillion years. So funny that this was in my recommendations!
One of the best songs for car karaoke 🎤🤣!
It’s the ultimate love song. Listen to sunshine on leith. Brilliant tune
One of my favourites that you just can't help singing along too
Sunshine on Leith and Letter from America. Hope you get on ok with the thick accent. Makes me enjoy them as true Scot’s singers.
This is a sing along drunken anthem in parties and pubs across Britain and Australia and has been for years.
Man, I always connect this song to How I Met Your Mother. Marshall and Ted singing along on one of their road trips in the Fiero. Good times
One of my favorite Pick Me Up songs ever!! ❤🤘
Some of my favourites of theirs
Oh jean,
cap in hand,
sunshine on leith,
when your in love and the shrek classic im on my way 😂
That was lovely, thanks for sharing this¬
This was on David Letterman. Paul Shaffer's band was fantastic!
Bringing me back to mid 90's sick days from school watching VH-1 😁
How long til 'Price is Right' comes on?
