Starts with 1949 when he was born and goes through 1989 when he turned 40. He wrote this in response to a comment by Sean Lennon and a friend who said nothing happened during Billy’s life. It wasn’t as tough a time to live through. Billy is a huge history buff so this was right up his alley. This was also the only song to which he ever wrote the lyrics first. A very interesting song, but not his best musically. Dive into his catalog for an amazing eclectic catalog.

Didn't realize that. That is good to know. All I remember is when I went back and really learned the lyrics of the song early in my adult life, and then went back again shortly after and researched each topic. Children of Thalidomide (sp) was probably the most surprising.

we had to dissect every line in the song and it taught us something about history.
Same, but in 2012! I had a history teacher in high school who assigned each student a verse of this song. We all had to present the historical context of our verse to the class. Was actually a great way of teaching history.
We had to recreate the song for my 8th grade Social Studies class using events happening in our lives. Teacher gave us all a 5 year span to find different events to put into this

In junior high, our history teacher assigned each of us in the class a report on one of the things mentioned in the song. I ended up with 'Children of Thalidomide'. Holy shit... that was a DARK subject for a 6th or 7th grader...
High School for me, but same assignment. Dont remotely regret it.

The song was Joel's response to a conversation in the recording studio with Julian Lennon and a friend who had just turned 21. They were in the studio that day and stopped to say hi to Joel. The friend was lamenting how hard it was to turn 21 in 1989 and suggested to Joel that it was much more difficult growing up in the 1980s than the 1950s.
Joel, a life-long history buff, was surprised by the young man's views. His lack of understanding about the turmoil of the 1950s and 1960s, which included momentous events like the Korean conflict, the Civil Rights Movement and the Cold War, sparked Joel to record a mini-history lesson in music covering forty years, from 1949 to 1989. In less than five minutes, starting with 1949 (the year Joel was born), he mentions 117 important people, conflicts and other historical events, fads and cultural touchstones.

Yeah and as time goes on the song just gets longer because the world keeps turning and the fire keeps burning. Every generation thinks their problems are the worst ever and every generation has it's problems. That's just the world.
We sang this song in my 8th grade chorus concert in Spring 1993. We had to memorize the entire thing. Our chorus teacher broke us into groups and we reported on each thing mentioned in the lyrics. This was before the internet so I'm talking card catalog and books/,encyclopedias. If we wanted to get real high tech we could sign up to use 1 of the 2 computers in our library that had a computer encyclopedia on it! It was the world of our parents being most of our parents were probably 35 to 45 at the time. It was all about generational understanding!
He is giving you a history of the mid century forward. He is proving that every generation has contributed to the progression of history. This is about the world he grew up in and what prior generations had done. Future generations will look back and see what we have wrought. The lyrics are amazing and not just random words that fit a rhyme scheme. It was great watching you going from the chorus is great but the verses are random. Then you caught on to the progression of the verses. You have an excellent grasp of history
The official video starts with an infant and it grows as the song progresses so we get the view of what the baby was born into and as he grows the events that shape him as he becomes an adult .It is a history in outline.

Sometime in the 90's my father played this song for me in the car on the way somewhere and broke it all down and explained all the things in the song to me. He then explained that this had been the things he'd seen in his life and lived through. That'll probably stay with me my whole life. Fires still burning.
As a teenager in the 90s, my history teacher had this as one of our projects. He printed out the lyrics and for every couple we got right we got extra credit points for our overall grade. I drove my parents nuts over a weekend asking questions. Oh the days before the internet blew up lol

The studio version will always be the best version to analyze if only because the lyrics will be clearer. There are too many live performances that sound almost nothing like the studio version , ostensibly because the artist has performed it a thousand times and is so desperately sick of it - or is trying to make it sound fresh (Not the ideal circumstances to hear/judge a song for the first time).

I agree. But Billy was not apologizing for his generation in this song. He was making the point that each generation had its own trials. We should not blame the past but work for a better future.

Another great and underrated in my opinion, Billy Joel song is "The Longest Time"
I guess the most underrated is "Leningrad" as it only got into the charts in some European countries.
We listened to and studied this in World History class back in like 2000 my junior year of HS. It's just an ever progressing list of important world events. Silly kind of, but a clever birds eye view teaching tool for a quick recap.

I have always felt that Billy Joel's best song was and still is Piano Man.
The events he mentions begin with the year of his birth, 1949. Some of the people are older but their cultural relevance will have been post 1949 as well.

I was born in 48 and this is memories from my youth. My dad was in the army stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco when the bay of pigs occurred. I had to show my ID to get on base after school. Very scary.
I love watching a reaction to this song from someone who has a knowledge of history and can speak intelligently about the events. Most people my age (39) and younger have no idea what this song is about, which is a shame, since those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it.

Also, just because there is a raunchy song in the 20s (or 50s or 60s or 70s, etc.) doesn't make WAP any less nasty. I'm not saying don't make those songs, but my personal opinion is that they shouldn't be a radio release... a deep cut would be my preference.
Yeah, the genesis of this song was Billy Joel talking to a younger man, with each of them saying that they have it so much rougher than the other person had it. Basically calling out people who say "your generation had it better than us" or "that things have never been as bad as they are now."

This song is a history lesson - 40 years of pop culture & items in the news. During the 90s this song was used in history classes in high schools & colleges.
Billy Joel is 3 years older than me but those events were all affecting me, our generation 7 the future, it is a social history lesson, but the troubles (though different) have been with us since the beginning of man. The sixties were very chaotic, thus the line we tried to fix it, life itself is fractal in nature, every little "fix" spawns more chaos.

A recording of this song and lyrics for each student made it into our high-school history classes when it came out. All of the names, places, and events were in order and we discussed them and their relevance in history.

He was told by a young man, that all the problems of the days were caused by Billy's generation. and basically Billy is saying no we didnt start this because we were saying the same thing while he was growing up.
My read of this song is that for Joel was born in 1949, right as the world was coming out of the world wars, and the world started really feeling the effects of globalization. He was too young to really do anything except observe the world in the period right after WWII, and started being properly aware in the turmoil of the 60's.
From his perspective, the world must have been blowing up, with dramatic changes and advances just coming at him in a constant stream, and it must have seemed overwhelming. The way he processed that rapidly changing world was to just get it all out there in a song, in a cathartic acknowledgement of how the world felt like it was spinning out of the world. Or, like it was burning, similar to an uncontrollable fire.
Imagine that song as, "Australian Bush fire, Iowa caucus, Wall Street, Libya, wuhan china, Middle east WWIII, Kobe rest in peace, North Korea, Turkey, flight 752, lockdown, George Floyd...." (I stole that mostly from this ua-cam.com/video/mlBe5in4gvo/v-deo.html&ab_channel=KaiSteines )...only, you know, with an actual rhyme scheme. I think we can all relate to the feeling that we have entered into a time of rapid change that we have difficulties even processing, much less understanding in a way that doesn't involve being overwhelmed. Of course, we can get get an entire remix of this song from a couple of months of 2020 alone.
Also, fun fact, this song contains reference to Roy Cohn, probably because of his work with McCarthy, but Cohn was also Donald Trumps lawyer, since he used be a lawyer for people with Mob connections.

If you just research each line of this song you get a great tour of the history of the world in the mid 1900's. It's also great to dance to in a club.

My 8th grade history class used this song to teach "recent history" events. Each student got 3-4 events, and we had to do a report for each of our events.
It was eye opening to say the least.
When it first came out I listened to this on repeat until I had every word memorized. Skip ahead several years and was talking to coworkers. Don't remember how it came up but one didn't believe me Bet me 20 bucks I couldn't keep up with it. Little did the guy know I had it on my phone, love BJ. Wish I had a picture of his face when I still knew it by heart. Bought a couple pizzas for everyone with the money.

In high school we were given a research assignment dealing with this song. The song was described as "a parentheses around the cold war". I'll agree with others he might have better songs in regard to the music, but I absolutely love this one for the lyrics. Definitely check out more Billy Joel.
Exactly! Billy is saying that the world was screwed up when he was born in 1949, it was screwed up while he grew up and when he became an adult and it will always be screwed up. The people and places he mentions highlight the journey from birth to when the song was recorded. 🔥

I was a kid who loved history that this song really spoke to. To provide perspective, I was born in 80 with a father born in 24 and a mother in 44. I would listen to it over and over until I could sing it word for word. Knowing it so well has even helped me answer crossword puzzle clues.

I had a history teacher in high school who used this song in a project before graduation. We were tasked with researching each decade mentioned in the song, why that was important in the timeline, THEN write our own verses with the next decade's events. The point was that each of our generations were given some kind of fire, we didn't make it ourselves, and we have certain choices about what to do with that fire before eventually we will pass that fire on to the next generation.
