    Hey man!!
    You saved my life!!!
A month ago I bought a destroyed lawn mower.
Repaired the blade, changed the air filter and cleaned the carburetor after viewing zillions of youtube tutorials.
    Obviously, it didn't start.
JUST when I was about to take out cylinder, valves, crankshaft and so on, I remembered your demonstration on HOW should the PRIMER work.
As it didn't work as you showed, I decided to give it a try and put the DOUBLE gasket.
It started at the FIRST shot.
If I have the luck to go wherever you live i ought you a bottle of wine!!!!!!
    Congratulations!!!

I am a 70 year old man and after watching the video figured I could do this myself. Ordered part #795083 diaphragm/gasket kit and disassembled, cleaned and put back together. Started right up but was leaking gas from one of the five screws. I took it back apart and added the old gasket {2 gaskets and 1 diaphragm total} and that stopped the screw from leaking. Starts good and works fine now! And saved myself about $75.00

Found an old Lawn Boy mower at a lawn mower bone yard. I'm fairly handy at fixing things and use youtube a bunch. Bought it for $20. It had been sitting in the open for ?? a long time. Got it home and cleaned it, Replaced oil, cleaned out gas tank, Replaced air filter (bad). Lubed all the wheels, cleaned the carb, replaced a bent blade. IT RUNS. Was I just lucky or is this common?? If it is common it could become a side gig since I'm retired. Kind of fun. After a little more work it looks almost new. Are things like this in demand??? Where are the best places to advertise it? Its on Craigslist but open to more ideas.

I was given a G M C with a B&S 3.75 the base was rusty and corroded the engine had old oil in it , the carby was so full of dirt and garbage , but I persevered , ; painted the underside of the deck with rust killer ( after cleaning of course ) , cleaned and repainted the engine ( it took almost a day for the old oil to fully drain ) , new blades after base plate was repainted , carby back together everything works , used some primer to help the engine start , and Action , first pull of the rope . ; I realised that the governor connection was put on the wrong way so that was changed and Wow , Going like brand new !
Footnote : I also cleaned and repainted the outer frame , not quite GMC Blue , but it looks like brand new !

After years of taking my equipment to a small engine repair guy and watching his rates climb up and up and up I finally said enough and started digging into my own tools, buying carb kits online, and fixing everything I own. I'm rather amazed how easy it is to work on these things. My first rebuild was a stihl 362, which I had gotten the wrong carb kit for, yet was able to clean up and assemble again with no leaks. Now I'm looking to get a riding mower and have spent the morning scouring the net just looking at various rebuild videos. idk how I stumbled on a push mower rebuild video but I'm glad I did. I've never had to replace a string yet. Was that paracord? Good stuff all around. Cheers man!

My small engine guy told me that my weed whacker only had a certain life span of about four months running time. I got tired of buying new ones. So, I bought a new carb kit on line and bolted it on. It was like a brand new machine.
My field is carpentry not small engine repair, but when push comes to shove I can watch videos and educate myself and get it done.
The tips from the viewers helps as well. Thanks

People that post videos in UA-cam deserve all kind of respect for dedication, attention to details and most of all the willingness to share their knowledge, however for a 43 minutes video and going by the tittle I was expecting a motor tear down with spark plug replacement and at least a few shots of the new blade and perhaps a new air filter. Thank you for your video, I am sure that there are many other people satisfied with it, and I am the only one with a critic on it.

I think you both will appreciate it, same as having the compressor close by just if you find new hidden dirt. Ok, I'll continue enjoying your material.
    Min 4:36, what a difference!
Min. 39:50 Love your references to Ernest, so funny lol. Great job rebuilding the carb and cleaning all you can your mower. One suggestion I heard and am applying, oil (can be old used vehicle engine oil or any but better the thicker ones) can be applied to steel surfaces, especially the deck bottom, the blade, and any steel surfaces you want to preserve. I heard the old timers applied it to their vehicles, especially their farm trucks and equipments. They'll get a nice patina, color and last longer. At the end, we want our money in our pockets.

OSPHO is worth it's weight in gold. It SEEMS expensive at about $25/gallon but, when applied correctly, it'll go a long way. It converts rust (iron oxide) to iron phosphate, a hard, inert substance that turns the metal black. I have used this, followed by a rattle can of epoxy chassis paint ($5 @ harbor Freight) after a day.
If I were to buy a new mower, or anything else (highly unlikely!), I'd preemptively do this given the impressive results. Cheers!

friendly suggestion ... Second time I've watched the carb rebuild on you tube, both of yall mention the grooves go down ... of course down is a relative term, and the grooves are impossible to see. You might try a different qualifier. I'll be rebuilding a carb soon (that's why I'm watching some of these you tube gems) and I think I'll be able to figure it out. But it would be more clear if you said "towards the bottom of the bowl", or "top of the carb" , or "next to the pointed end of the float needle" etc.
having said that, this was a VERY informative video, I enjoyed it a lot. I learned that you can wash out the gas tank with soap and water (I had been using carb cleaner or fresh gas/sea foam mix).
One thing I learned, that I did not know prior ... b&s gas tanks have built in fuel filters. I suppose they could become clogged ... I suspect my neighbors mower has this problem. I've tried to get it started for her for a bit. I suspect her ex put something in the gas tank of her very new mower that suspiciously stopped working.
now, for my joke ... towards the end you said "don't forget your oil dipstick" to which I reply ... who you calling a dipstick :)

  • @DDEENY
    @DDEENY 4 роки тому +22

You need to make it ABUNDANTLY clear that the spark plug wire needs to be disconnected before turning the mower over and turning the engine with the blade in the event that the engine happens to start while being handled, unless anyone is OK with going through life minus a hand. Also note that the plug wire needs to be secured so that the boot can't snap back over the plug nipple because even a disconnected plug WILL spark without the wire clipped onto its nipple as the electrical current will arc across. The mower also needs to be tipped over carburetor side UP to avoid oil flooding the carb. Thank you.

Great video! just a suggestion, you can clean that carburetor a lot better with some EAGLE ONE CHROME ACID RIM CLEANER. All you'll need to do is use an old tooth brush and scrub the wheel cleaner in. This stuff will eat away all the rust and mineral build up, it works in minutes. I rebuild 2 stroke dirt bikes, the whole thing and the rim cleaner work fantastic on all metal parts.

    I was given ( the other day ) , a G M C with a B & S 3.75 hp engine .
The frame was as bad as Yours was , but I have cleaned it up , treated it with Galvanizing Coating/protector painted the underside , ( a day later ) , with the closest color I could find to the G M C color : the outer frame beeen cleaned off and rust spots treated with Black metal paint , then preliminary coat of ( again ) blue paint from a pressure can ; the handle bars , axels , and metal fuel tank been cleaned and painted Black Gloss enamel , I 'll repaint again after this weekend !
The engine , Wow dirt and filth galore , but I have cleaned it so it looks respectable , the oil , looked like tar , ( Yuk ) , took 4 hours to completely drain out ( I think its been the original oil )
Magneto , dirt and rust , but like Yours 12 mils vert tight , but it looks like dirt and rust !
Next week , I pull the engine apart and clean and check ; I'll give You a progress report and hopefully I can send some photos of its resurrection and future ?

I have always wanted to learn to work on my own small engines because I’m sure 90% of the problems I have are be use of something to do with my carb. I don’t have an extra mower or snow blower so if I mess them up some way forget how they go back on I’ll be screwed. I have watched a ton of these videos on you tube so you would think that I could take these apart and put them back on in my sleep but no. I’m a hands on guy and I learn by doing not by watching. Hello great content, try using oven cleaner from the dollar store, it cuts built up dirt and grime really well and it's cheap. Spray it all over the engine and deck wait 10-15 minutes spray off with garden hose or better yet pressure washer. Works great on your car engines also.

Rust is an insulator so you need to take some fine sandpaper and clean that Magneto and coil it will run better

for those of you buying complete lawn mower carburators on ebay for $13 be aware that most of them either will leak gas or not work correctly after a few months. spend the money and buy a quality carburator.

Ralph, do you mean springs on the carb? If so, I would recommend a quick Google search. If all else fails, I can send a schematic from my B&S service manual
