after constantly deleting the game and redownloading it more times than i can remember this video finally helped get everything to work. great video man thank you.
It's nice that people still make Skyrim modding videos. I've beem modding for like forever and came here to remind myself of essential stuff to do at the start. This guide covers everything perfectly.
I've been modding skyrim on and off for years, but it was this step that finally gave me a crash free game. At level 40 and not one crash with over 220 mods (including CC content, half of which was dirty). Thanks for the video, it made all the difference for me!

I modded my game and then haven't played in 5 years. I saw that Skyrim had the SE and decided to do a clean mod on it. I'm so thankful you did this video since I remembered doing similar steps last time.
Wow this was really good! I messed up my skyrim modding and decided to follow this for my second try. Really easy to follow, and everything was explained good!
I just want to take the opportunity to thank you for your time and effort in making this vid, I've seen lots of videos on modding and mod lists but yours showed me how to do it what to use and where to find it, but my first attempt failed ( messed up somehow) second attempt l got a bit more organised with folders and downloads and it worked, mine looked the same as yours, now the hard part finding the right mods l want and need, Questions - do I need to run sse edit and tools after every download, and do I need to launch the game from the M O 2 every time or could I do it from my desktop. Thanks again
Thanks for your comments much appreciated. Once you have cleaned the master files you do not need to use SSE edit anymore. Unless the mod author specifically states to clean them do not do so. LOOT is the tool you want to use after you have installed your mods so that your load order is correct. Run LOOT every time you install a mod. But you must use the SKSE plugin to start your game. Meaning you cant use the play button on steam anymore. You can either open up MO2 and run the SKSE plugin from there or you can take the SKSE plugin and make a shortcut on your desktop and use it from there. But MO2 needs to be running anyways so you might as well just run it from MO2. But its all up to you.
For anyone who is installed the mods and having them not shwo up in the Mods folder. You need to drag and drop the fles from the installed section to the left section. Then they will appear in the Mods folder.
Great video thank you for the time invested in making this. Quick question, after completing all these steps I have started downloading mods that I actually want to use in my game and noticed those mods within vortex but I am not seeing them within the Mod Organizer menu ? I have not modded any games for years since NMM, I am completely new to vortex and these other programs.

Hello, thanks for the guide dude. I saw in another video that it's way better to downgrade Skyrim to a previous version because in the newest update "80%" of the previous mods don't work. Is this true?
Hey cool, so it depends on which mods you want to use. A lot of the popular mods have been ported over to the AE version of the game. Who ever said 80% is exaggerating quite a bit. Check out this list, it will help you out a lot when figuring out which game version you would like to use. modding.wiki/en/skyrim/users/skse-plugins

Haha yeah I gotcha its a shame not to have all the mods moved over to SE, but yeah I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to use these same steps for setting up Oldrim. Just replace all the AE steps with Oldrim and you'll be good to go.

Great video. Everything worked out so far - just a small problem; the mods mentioned at around 15:00 (SSE Display Tweaks) can not be found via searchbar. At least not for me. I will probably be able to find everything on my own but it would be a nice support if you could list the links needed in the videodescription. Anyways, thanks for the tutorial!
No. Do not clean mods unless they are explicitly stated by the mod author. I'm actually in the process of a new video that goes into more detail about this so stay tuned!
first time installing it after being on the fallout games since 2012. is it mandatory to install it a 2nd time if i never actually had it installed before.said the word install way too many times but ok
No, if its the first time you have installed Skyrim you do not need to delete and reinstall it. This is only for people that had it installed already and may have done some modding or changed some files, this is needed to make sure the game is on a clean installation with no prior changes made so that no issues arise from any previous installs or changes.
I'm following the guide but I get stuck on SSEEditQuickAutoClean installation. After installing it and Loot, the Ssedit gives me an error message "SSEEdit could not open registry key and SSEEdit could not find ini FIX" I've alredy run the game through the original laucher. I have the GOG version of the game. Making a clean installation after a mess I did with another Instance that made my game crush after few seconds in game, and this "fatal key registry" error didn't appear before. I'm probably doing something wrong. I there any hero capable to help?
Yes you sure can. The same rules apply also if you enjoyed the video I would love if u would hit that subscribe button it really helps out and thx for the comment and gl on ur modding ventures!
Bro ever since i tried to follow this video i got into game an saw my cursor was super slow then went back to normal put of the game then i loaded up other games an now my cursor goes either super slow or fast in game then when i get out of game it goes back to my 900 dpi any help please
Hey thanks brother this is so useful. I did not have to manually clean the Dawnguard ESM but I have an error showing up in LOOT with the SurvivalMode ESM and have no idea how to clean it... Didn't find anything on the web for that. If you have any idea, please help! Thanks.
I have a question, I can play wabbajack modlist without my steam skyrim game being installed but my own list wont run without it being downloaded how do I make it run without it? do I make a copy and add it?
ive done everything you did in the video and it didnt do anything to skyrim for me does this no longer work or could i have messed up? i also just did the default install i didnt change any pathing
Loot will help you sort the order in which your mods need to be in. SSEDIT will clean the dirty files so that there are no problems way later in you game save that some mods may have problems with. I would just keep your playthrough going and if you start to encounter severe problems then you can try running loot and ssedit to see if that fixes them.
When you launch Skyrim for the first time on SKSE, yours boots up quick and starts with the Bethesda screen and the music. Mine is a black screen, loads, then goes to the menu where the silver logo changes to the gold one and then the music starts. Any idea what the issue is? Seems like nothing for now but this is my third time trying to get mods (specifically Cathedral ENB) so trying to figure out if I have an issue off the hop
The black screen at start up is normal, mine looks fast cuz I edit out the long load time for the video. Some mods will skip the Bethesda logo and go straight to the game menu. Everything is working normally thx for subscribing I wish more people did I could really use them 😄
thanks@@CactusBagel1979 ! i eventually have figured it all out. After installing Cathedral and Lux I was having a lot of texture problems in caves and mines but a random mod I found has fixed it all. I am a happy camper now :) Appreciate your video!
Wait I heard in another tutorial video that the AE version isn't an upgrade and 90% of mods are still being run in it, can I still use SE mods for the AE build?
90% now and days is a huge exaggeration. Most of the popular mods have been updated to AE. Check out this link modding.wiki/en/skyrim/users/skse-plugins. SE version is 1.5.97 AE version is 1.6. *You cannot use SE mods for the AE game version*. Use the mod that says its for AE if you are on game version 1.6, which you will be using if you have never downgraded your Skyrim version or if you have not set the game to not update.
@@CactusBagel1979When I downloaded Skyrim SE recently I received 1.6.640. This was confusing at first, because I thought I was SE. Apparently SE buyers are getting AE without the Creation Club content. It was 39.99. Upgrade is 19.99 to get all the Creation Club content, which is considerably more if purchased separately. Just a heads up. You probably already know. 👍
Take a look at my What Version of Skyrim should I mod? video it will clear alot of things up ;) ua-cam.com/video/LKZP_FFa18c/v-deo.htmlsi=kJB9uLXvr7QeZBbW@@jimshomestudio
Hi sorry I have a quick question. I only have A SDD drive and a HDD drive..my (C) drive is SDD and my (D) is HDD.. if I install MO2 , Loot ,SKSE and all those mods and modding tools in my (D) drive. Which is a HDD. Will my game run much slower compare to my (C) SDD? As I know we need to lauch skyrim SE/AE through Mo2 using skse ..
Deleting the game is up to you. It is recommended to start fresh so that if there are issues with the game you know its not from your current installation. Its not a big deal at all, just go into mod organizer's mods folder and save all your mods then delete everything (skyrim and MO2). Then install everything again, Skyrim and MO2 then install your 25 mods. Also it best to make sure you dont install skyrim to c:program files x86 creat a new folder in what ever drive you want for both MO2 and Skyrim. You will be much happier knowing everything has been freshly installed.
@@CactusBagel1979hey may i ask you will the games after this steps will be a little brighter in the trees areas or lets say more foggy when looking to trees i do follow your video steps except that i downgrade the game to 1.5.97 before doing this . i hope you answer me this is very important ?
There could be some changes that were made by Bethesda in the way the trees look with the new updates thats the only thing I can think of that would have changed this.@@islamguefrachi
I dont see why not, I cant say for certain tho as I have not tried it but you can give it a shot and if something messes up just delete and reinstall from fresh again. Lemme know if you ever ended up trying this as I would like to know as well
I ran the quick clean on Dawnguard and when I checked it in LOOT, it showed no wild edits or anything needing to be cleaned. Did something change recently? I'm just starting this process, so I'm not going to assume anything.
If LOOT is saying there are now more wild edits to be cleaned then you are good to go! I haven't seen this happen before during multiple installs but something could have changed with the Dawnguard.esm in updates. Close everything out (Mod Organizer) (LOOT) (SSEEdit) open them back up and make sure your hitting update Masterlist in LOOT just to make sure though.
Had the same problem. I ran the Autocleaner on Dawnguard once more, then opened loot, closed it, and then manual SSE edit where I saw the error and removed it.
If I don't use MO2 do I launch my games, do I use: Vortex game launcher [upper left corner], from SKSE within Vortex, or from within the SKSE folder...or from Steam?
I don't know if you sorted it out already but you have to go to Dashboard in Vortex and set up your tools/patchers there. They will appear next to the "Run Game" button. MO2 takes a bit of work to understand at first but it's a beast of a tool.
I would not worry about cleaning all the files for AE. My next mod list build is going to have all the AE stuff in it and I'm not going to clean all of them. Downgrading is only necessary if there is a certain mod that's not compatible with AE. I like having the most up to date version of the game.
@@CactusBagel1979 Thanks so much! This video is so helpful by the way and as a new modder to skyrim this was so great! I have 35 mods in and working fine after following your guide - no crashes yet! 😃 would you ever do a guide on how to set up nemesis with mod organiser 2 and TDM / valhalla combat and precision - some key combat overhaul mods?
So heres the thing with not installing to C:Program files x86. This file is considered a protected folder by microsoft and installing anything to this folder that uses programs like a mod organizer, steam and mods will sometimes cause conflicts and the mods will not work. Will games and programs and mods work if installed here yes but all things might not work properly. Its best to just not use this file for Steam, Games and any mods your going to use.
I made the video so that it showcases what to do on the latest version of the game. By all means if you need the earlier version of skse because your not using the latest version of skyrim, go ahead and download that one instead. Even know it says SE on your steam library you are actually on the AE version of the game if the game has been allowed to update. But to make sure look at your game version. If it says 1.5 your on SE. If it says 1.6 then your on AE
Don't you need to remove the # from the lines in the SSE Display Tweaks config? Leaving the # at the beginning of the lines should denote them as comments, which are ignored. That's the way every config file I've ever edited worked.
on fresh installs, you also need to run a new game at least once instead of just opening it up until the main menu. no need to finish the helgen intro.
Hello, no you don't have to start a new game. You just need to start up Skyrim one time and then you can close it. Some files need to be initialized and this happens once the game loads up the main menu screen for the first time. If you have data to support otherwise plz feel free to mention it here as I would like to know as well. Installing the standalone version of LOOT gives you a much more comprehensive messaging system with write ups for every single mod you have installed. Its much more user friendly and allows to you update the masterlist so you know your getting the most current version. Thank you for your comments and analysis hope this clears things up.
No need to downgrade. I always suggest using the most updated version of the game ;). If there are certain mods that are only usable on a downgrade version of the game then by all means you can downgrade. Check out my other vid for more info on the skryim versions and which would is best for you to use. ua-cam.com/video/LKZP_FFa18c/v-deo.htmlsi=PV236hnjGifKCODW

4. Clean the masters with SSEedit
5. Run the game with the cleaned masters
If the game plays differently or starts causing problems, revert to the pre-cleaned files.
I didn't first start Skyrim before installing SKSE... Will I have problems?
"I'm gonna go grab some cereal"
Great video. Everything worked out so far - just a small problem; the mods mentioned at around 15:00 (SSE Display Tweaks) can not be found via searchbar. At least not for me. I will probably be able to find everything on my own but it would be a nice support if you could list the links needed in the videodescription. Anyways, thanks for the tutorial!
Done. Thx for the great idea.
U know maybe some optymalization mods? For better performance and more fps
you won a sub!!!
Hi dear, beautiful explanation, one question, every time I download a mod, do I always have to clean it?
This is only for people that had it installed already and may have done some modding or changed some files, this is needed to make sure the game is on a clean installation with no prior changes made so that no issues arise from any previous installs or changes.
my cute vortex make me delete all my mod list. i'll try mo2 now so thanks a lot!
I'm following the guide but I get stuck on SSEEditQuickAutoClean installation. After installing it and Loot, the Ssedit gives me an error message
"SSEEdit could not open registry key and SSEEdit could not find ini FIX"
I've alredy run the game through the original laucher. I have the GOG version of the game. Making a clean installation after a mess I did with another Instance that made my game crush after few seconds in game, and this "fatal key registry" error didn't appear before. I'm probably doing something wrong. I there any hero capable to help?
Hi, and thank you for the tutorial! I was curious if I could use Vortex instead of MO2?
Yes you sure can. The same rules apply also if you enjoyed the video I would love if u would hit that subscribe button it really helps out and thx for the comment and gl on ur modding ventures!
Bro ever since i tried to follow this video i got into game an saw my cursor was super slow then went back to normal put of the game then i loaded up other games an now my cursor goes either super slow or fast in game then when i get out of game it goes back to my 900 dpi any help please
Is it wise to run SSEEdit on an existing game/modlist? cause i really dont want to start my game from lvl 0 again!
Hey thanks brother this is so useful. I did not have to manually clean the Dawnguard ESM but I have an error showing up in LOOT with the SurvivalMode ESM and have no idea how to clean it... Didn't find anything on the web for that. If you have any idea, please help! Thanks.
Hay my Verizon of the game is 1.6.117 I choose that one right or do I choose the one below it the 1.6.1179 I have the Skyrim se
Does anyone know how to download high poly head on Mod Organizer 2?? Seems really wonky trying to manually install it on here
what about Win + R, then "appdata", local, documents(?) Skyrim. delete.
What if i already have heavily modded skyrim and i didnt run loot and ssedit so far i havent encountered crashes
I have AE. Should I not download the mods included?
No, definitely use the mods that you paid for on the AE version they will be fine. Do not clean them either.
@@CactusBagel1979 Thanks for taking the time to answer! Definitely used them. Subbed!
@@CactusBagel1979 so i did clean them can that be why nothing has changed in game for me?
I am a happy camper now :) Appreciate your video!
how do i make this in vortex mod manager?
As I know we need to lauch skyrim SE/AE through Mo2 using skse ..
do i need to delete the game i also have 25 mods installed with mo2 i hope you answer me ?
Deleting the game is up to you. It is recommended to start fresh so that if there are issues with the game you know its not from your current installation. Its not a big deal at all, just go into mod organizer's mods folder and save all your mods then delete everything (skyrim and MO2). Then install everything again, Skyrim and MO2 then install your 25 mods. Also it best to make sure you dont install skyrim to c:program files x86 creat a new folder in what ever drive you want for both MO2 and Skyrim. You will be much happier knowing everything has been freshly installed.
@@CactusBagel1979 i deleted the game anyway cuz it was on the program files
@@CactusBagel1979hey may i ask you will the games after this steps will be a little brighter in the trees areas or lets say more foggy when looking to trees i do follow your video steps except that i downgrade the game to 1.5.97 before doing this . i hope you answer me this is very important ?
There could be some changes that were made by Bethesda in the way the trees look with the new updates thats the only thing I can think of that would have changed this.@@islamguefrachi
Does this method work if you have the game installed through the Epic Games Launcher instead of steam? i assume its just a different file path
I dont see why not, I cant say for certain tho as I have not tried it but you can give it a shot and if something messes up just delete and reinstall from fresh again. Lemme know if you ever ended up trying this as I would like to know as well
10/10
I still use nexus mod manager
When your cleaning files you have like 5 to clean, do i have to clean all the extra stuff that comes withAE edition too? Or should i patch downgrade?
I would not worry about cleaning all the files for AE. My next mod list build is going to have all the AE stuff in it and I'm not going to clean all of them. Downgrading is only necessary if there is a certain mod that's not compatible with AE. I like having the most up to date version of the game.

Thanks so much!
Does anyone know if you can mod Skyrim if steam is installed in program files. Heard that it won’t work properly
Its best to just not use this file for Steam, Games and any mods your going to use.
why wouldnt i use the downgrade skse if im on se version of skyrim
FNIS/Nemesis?
Nemesis runs everything FNIS did. It generates a compatibility ESL (as far as I can recall) that takes care of all that.
@@NotoriusBFG neither was included in the video, which was my point
Do we need downgrade skyrim ?
No need to downgrade. I always suggest using the most updated version of the game ;). If there are certain mods that are only usable on a downgrade version of the game then by all means you can downgrade. Check out my other vid for more info on the skryim versions and which would is best for you to use. ua-cam.com/video/LKZP_FFa18c/v-deo.htmlsi=PV236hnjGifKCODW
loot doesnt work
i fixed it
should stipulate for PC on your Title Page
I've heard that cleaning master files is not necessary anymore for Special Edition, especially Anniversary Edition, because the game is set up for the post-DLC structure.
Ugh, and all of the what I assume is AE content creating a whole bunch of esl files to clean.
Now, we can never delete the game, for the new version has those paid mods shit.
