I agree. The guitar is thick as fuck too. If you haven’t checked out the garden if shankra Mesa boogie playthrough the guitar tone on that is sick too. All the bass playthroughs are live as fuck sounding though.
+Andrew Suzuki ....... That's not right. They, according to themselves, don't need a bass player since the guitars already cut into the bass frequencies, so it would just be unnecessary. Yes, I know that Periphery uses a bass player, even on the lowest songs, but they don't structure songs the same way as Animals As Leaders does. On the first AAL record, they never recorded bass, they just pitched the guitar a little bit to fatten it up a little bit. On the second record I'm not sure if they recorded bass.
+oggel33t I can't speak for Weightless, but I'm pretty sure they had bass on the latest album. As far as whether bass is necessary or not in such low tunings, it's really just relative to what's actually being played, and the kind of aesthetic you want your mixes to have. Bass probably isn't as crucial for a lot of the clean passages that AAL does, but when it comes to low-tuned riffing, I'd say bass is still an absolutely essential part of the mix.
+Siddharth Sharma Don't hype it up to a million degrees. Yes I love every piece written by these guys but expecting too much will never satisfied your needs. Be calm and patient and they will live up to the name, as long as we can support them.
Agreed, really like the new direction of Monuments and John Browne's work. Hoping for Baretto to keep the same vocal viber and the rest of the band really exploring the concept album niche.
Subranis And the Doxa play through. I, The Creator, just before the bridge when he plays the opening bit but on the low strings is insanely aggressive downpicking, and Doxa is just insane everywhere.
Really surprised there haven't been Guitar + Bass Play-throughs. This is awesome. Always wanted to see how this song was played exactly cuz some of those low-F notes are hard to decipher in the mix.
Man the level of appreciation and admiration I am developing right now is getting to the point where I'd gladly write a dissertation on your songwriting genius. I've had this song on repeat all day analysing it, the riff construction and progression and just basking in aural bliss haha, Divergence tour date at the RoundHouse is going to phenomenal. Fanboy out.
I literally watch this over and over again because that bass is gorgeous and so is the playing, Swan plays with such style. That is not to say John is not it's just I care less about guitars :D
+MESA/Boogie SAME!! Especially with Anup! Monuments has a massive sound already; Anup has a massive sound of his own. The combination is going to be unreal.
it's really interesting to watch how these guys react to the polyrhythm part @1:27 . Unfortunately, Adam doesn't seem to move much to the beat, apart from his hands obv. But John's head is a bit more interesting. He bobs his head to the "off-rhythm" cymbal while playing a completely different rhythm. When air-strumming the part, I have to deliberately and consciously bob my head to the kick not to get lost. I'm curious how these guys think through this part live
Yup don't have money for those instruments or the gear (saving up for a new car at the moment), but I loved watching this playthrough of one of my most favorite songs
Dawm i would really like to know what is on is pedal board that tone on this mark V is awesome ! I wish i can set my mark V to sound like this ( the mark V sound freaking awesome anyway ) Mesa Boogie Power !
Listen really closely at just after 2:40, you can here John doing some sort of quadruplet picking, that is tasty and I've never heard that before on a guitar
Yeah I noticed how aggressive he is, I can't imagine it's easy to mean that and be able to do that when you please that's all. Would love for someone to prove me wrong hahaha
Mesayones strikes again! You guys should do a collaboration of some sort, try to get both of Mesa and Mayones endorsers to use both Mesa amps and Mayones guitars. Best hand made US amps and best hand made Polish guitars. What a great choice.
Does anyone know if the bassist usually plays with or without a pick? I noticed that he switches right hand technique throughout this video, so I'm wondering if anyone knows if he has a preferred style or if he actually does switch all the time.
Anyone familiar with the Eight:88? I'm thinking about picking up a used one for my band. We have a Mesa Powerhouse 1000 cab and we're currently a Hartke 500 Watt amp that I feel just isn't pushing it as hard as it could.
Really wanna learn this song, but the tabs I've found don't appear to be what the guitarist is playing. Now I'm no prodigy, but as far as I can tell it's pretty different
That Aristides bass is the most gorgeous bass I've ever seen.
Swanny is such a Fucking boss.
Dude played slap, finger, and with a pick.
Right,Brandon Maccombs ? Agree.... :D
it actually looks like he uses his index finger as the pick??
RIX83 Nah, he actually uses a pick. He holds it between his lips in the beginning!
Jxhvnnes the beard acts as camouflage for the pick
When they'll have like 10strings on a guitar, bassists will just need to use 7string bass etc, end of the story to come..
John Browne is probably my favourite guitarist, his rhythm playing is just insanely tight and groovy, never seen anything like it....
that riffing technique is mental..after John I like Keith Marrow for his composition genius
toastpfanne yea he has the most proficient technique I've seen, really reminds me of the guys from meshuggah with just how locked in he is
Corusal I agree! John Browne's picking is like robotic, it's the most insane playing Ive ever seen.
Same man, he’s a big reason why monuments are one of my top 5 all time bands
I feel like the bass tone is better in this video than the actual album version
That's the case in most bass playthrough
I agree. The guitar is thick as fuck too. If you haven’t checked out the garden if shankra Mesa boogie playthrough the guitar tone on that is sick too. All the bass playthroughs are live as fuck sounding though.
I very much agree.
Yea John didn’t do so well with the mixing on the record so these playthroughs sound so much better
same for the guitar, idk why but monuments always tend make their album guitars sound so cheap
Proof that the bass is still relevant in a world of 8-string guitars.
+TakavaNirhii (near-eye) Don't get me wrong, I love Monuments/Swanny.. That said Animals As Leaders does a swell job without a bassist I'd say..
+Tae McGrew AAL still needs a bass part, it's just that they play a recording live instead of having a bass player.
+oggel33t I've seen them live and talked to them personally. they definitely use bass tracks. its easily detectible on albums and live.
Swan is such an underrated bassist.
oh yeah, the guy write some super tasty and inventive bass lines
higler420 Browne writes the parts (both guitar and bass). Swan improvises on said parts while playing live.
I LOVE the way that Adam switches between slapping, playing with a pick and his fingers.
this is what the genre should sound like! absolutely beast!
They are crushing...
Generic?
Generic? Are you fucking kidding? Dude your taste is a joke lmfao
I hope this band gets HUGE. I am a die hard Periphery fan, but I honestly think I like this a bit more. Crazy string work!
NiceCannon Sorenson - Feeling the same way. Some serious guitar sorcery going on here. Thanks for watching!
it makes it so much more fun to watch when u can see the musician fighting a smile ^.^
seeing John anchor his pinky too makes me feel so much better about it
same, I heavily anchor pinky, i'm also a filthy lefty.
I could listen to that ‘outro’ riff the whole day
it's gonna be so fuckin' hard for 'em to top an album like this one ... Amanuensis is a gem !!
+Siddharth Sharma Don't hype it up to a million degrees. Yes I love every piece written by these guys but expecting too much will never satisfied your needs. Be calm and patient and they will live up to the name, as long as we can support them.
They are the best modern group, in my opinion. Such addictive grooves!!
i thought the first album was much rawer, so in a way i feel lucky to have better to look forward to:D
Agreed, really like the new direction of Monuments and John Browne's work. Hoping for Baretto to keep the same vocal viber and the rest of the band really exploring the concept album niche.
Never underestimate a truly passionate musician as such. ;P Thier life mission is to blow minds, quite effectively.
1:27 every time that part plays my heart skips a beat it's so heavy!
Dont you just love it, how in every video with John, his right hand looks like its in fast forward!?
and his contorted pinky that he anchors on the high e string. Dude is a monster
Uh...no it doesn't. Not sure if you're trying to imply something there..
Chad DeBeau
It's a lot more apparent in Browne's I, the Creator EMG playthrough.
His picking is aggressive as fuck, super quick.
Subranis And the Doxa play through. I, The Creator, just before the bridge when he plays the opening bit but on the low strings is insanely aggressive downpicking, and Doxa is just insane everywhere.
He downpicks a ton.
0:36 that bass vibrato sounds so good
2018 and this is still THE riffage. Brown is the dude.
Agreed! Thanks, flapjax
2021
dear god... the tones, man
THEM TONESSSS
So much energy in the song from the riffage thats just maintained the whole way throughout
3 years later and this is still the best djent of all time.
1:00 Adam Swan is grinning like a man that _knows_ it's grooving.
It's the pick in his mouth haha
he wasn't grinning or smiling.
Look I know we all know Browne's an incredible guitarist, but can we just appreciate Swanny's CRAZY talent? And his tone???
Sooooo Great! PLEASE keep making videos like this!
Thanks,Júnior Casagrande - Will do!
Really surprised there haven't been Guitar + Bass Play-throughs. This is awesome. Always wanted to see how this song was played exactly cuz some of those low-F notes are hard to decipher in the mix.
The riff in the beginning is one of the best I've ever heard
Man the level of appreciation and admiration I am developing right now is getting to the point where I'd gladly write a dissertation on your songwriting genius. I've had this song on repeat all day analysing it, the riff construction and progression and just basking in aural bliss haha, Divergence tour date at the RoundHouse is going to phenomenal. Fanboy out.
That is one glorious room to play in!
Lovely. Thanks, John.
The end is the best part! The riff is mesmerising!
Dat bass playing tho
I literally watch this over and over again because that bass is gorgeous and so is the playing, Swan plays with such style. That is not to say John is not it's just I care less about guitars :D
Yeah truth is they're both out of this world ;)
The riffing on this song is just amazing! Great stuff.
Swan smiles, my heart melts.
These guys are amazing! That bass tone though!
1:50 the way he growls "seeking two" and then it drops, so sick!
Excellent mixing, and the performance as well. Crushed it.
Thanks, David!
Arif and Swan to this day, my favorite bassist in prog.
Outstanding, great duo.
That quilted neck is absolutely gorgeous. Have yet to try an aristides though
Insanely tight musicians very impressive and Mesa is the one and only in amps!!!
Thank you,AlexAlexanderLIVE !
You've obviously never heard of Line-6
The Mark V is badass!!! It's this and the TC-50 that blow me away
Thanks, Daniel! :)
Its surprising how calm they look now vs hen they play live...its like they transform into different people on stage
Power of a decent crowd bro
I feel like this is the first time i've seen Browne upstroke.
talent is off the charts
I love how chill the bassist is playing that disgusting riff
in love with Mesa Boogie all over again! 😍
perfect location.really cool playthrough tho
Thanks, Fred Fredoliiin - We thought so too! Insane room. :D
That’s a really nice growl on the bass guitar, love it!!
This is freaking kickass. Thanks to a friend for showing me this.
Such a good song... Recently covered it on a drums, and had a blast!
Keep groovin guys
Really solid stuff!!!!
egypt instrumental djent
Yeahhhh
like shokran band from russia
I can't WAIT until they come out with a new album!
Agreed, +WuKingdom1 ! :D
+MESA/Boogie SAME!! Especially with Anup! Monuments has a massive sound already; Anup has a massive sound of his own. The combination is going to be unreal.
Anup left :'(
F0dd3r FeelsBadMan
Bass is everything in this masterpiece
I could watch Browne's right hand technique all day
Oh boy the amount of groove here🤘🤘
That is fantastic
The chills man!
And that aristrides bass is gorgeous.
it's really interesting to watch how these guys react to the polyrhythm part @1:27 . Unfortunately, Adam doesn't seem to move much to the beat, apart from his hands obv. This song is pretty amazing.
awesome ...
Thanks, +J. Harkins ! :D
love this band, Baretto adds a lot
MattMoultonMusic too bad he’s gone now 😢💔
1:43-1:50 that's what I call passion for music when you see that expression.
This is sooo good I almost didn't notice the jeans situation
How am I just finding out about this. What a great song.
God damn this is awesome
Post Malone's real good on the bass
Ha! Indeed... :)
HDx89 get your eyes checked my dude
@@Belknap307 i guess adam sure has short hair and tats in hes face right?
and the guitar haha
@@Belknap307 ever heard of a joke?
I have never had the desire for an 8 string before, but after seeing that regius i want one
love this sooooo much !
ending part is riff of the century 🤘🏻😩🤘🏻
This makes me miss Fellsilent even more
Im not really into this genre of rock, but these guys have some skills! Damn!
Really cool !!!!
holy anoa. this is amazing. I thing i'm a fan now
The dream team. So proficient
Then you add in Mike Malyan and this band is really underrated. They are extremely talented
This reminds me of ancient times.
Such is life ....
Yup don't have money for those instruments or the gear (saving up for a new car at the moment), but I loved watching this playthrough of one of my most favorite songs
I would never put that 050 down haha, the fret-board would mesmerize me all my life!
these guys look like they could be brothers
Dawm i would really like to know what is on is pedal board that tone on this mark V is awesome ! I wish i can set my mark V to sound like this ( the mark V sound freaking awesome anyway ) Mesa Boogie Power !
Listen really closely at just after 2:40, you can here John doing some sort of quadruplet picking, that is tasty and I've never heard that before on a guitar
George Barclay he just messed up the rhythm bc of his super aggressive down picking
Yeah I noticed how aggressive he is, I can't imagine it's easy to mean that and be able to do that when you please that's all. Would love for someone to prove me wrong hahaha
Art.
Thank you, Tiger!
Mesayones strikes again! You guys should do a collaboration of some sort, try to get both of Mesa and Mayones endorsers to use both Mesa amps and Mayones guitars. Best hand made US amps and best hand made Polish guitars. What a great choice.
You can see john’s EQ setting at 3:31, definitely not the normal v
Sick place to shoot the video
Thanks!Doomerism
This mix actually sounds better than of the original song
Surly this was more like 5 years ago 🥲
I've never seen a bass with inline tuners and it looks awesome
What? Fender's been making inline headstocks on basses since 1950 lol
Is that a fucking quilted maple fretboard?
Yes it is, and it's treated with epoxy to make it harder and more stable :)
Birdseye, maple... to be specific...Roran109 - Sweet, isn't it?!?! :D
MESA/Boogie Yes, considering that the body and the neck are made of composite materials!
MESA/Boogie looks more like quilt to me
Jesse Holt have a look at Aristides website to have all the specs of that bass. It should be an Aristides 050
i love this music.
Does anyone know if the bassist usually plays with or without a pick? I noticed that he switches right hand technique throughout this video, so I'm wondering if anyone knows if he has a preferred style or if he actually does switch all the time.
I saw them live last year and he switched pretty consistently
Just out of curiosity, does the guitarist have any booster pedals/overdrives with that Mark V?
Hi***** - I believe John was using his signature Pandemonium in the standard settings. Other than that, no other FX in the chain.
MESA/Boogie Thank you! I'm just a gear nerd, so I like to know these things :) btw I love my Mark V to death, with or without a boost.
Definitely some serious planning!
Anyone familiar with the Eight:88? I'm thinking about picking up a used one for my band. We have a Mesa Powerhouse 1000 cab and we're currently a Hartke 500 Watt amp that I feel just isn't pushing it as hard as it could.
.Adam the bass is killer....peace..
I just love the ending...
Probably helps they have Aristides and Mayones guitars swell as these ballin amps
EPIC!
Anyone knows what tuning on Browne's 8 string for this song? Thanks :) kind of tired always playing mine on Drop E or standard tuning.
ajaveir Low to high F, Bb, F, Bb, Eb, F, Bb, Eb
Thanks A lot! You're very kind. I'll experiment with it. Any Special gauge strings? Take care.
***** Thanks a lot. I'll try it.
I want that mesa strategy amphead!!!!!! fucking sounds prime
Thanks, Alex! :D
