With the help of the History Men and Women, we explore the world of George Miller’s Mad Max; from Aunty Entity's Bartertown to Pappagallo’s Compound to Immortan Joe's empire in the Citadel. Along the way, I explain who in the desert is The Coma-Doof Warrior, the Crow Fishers, War Boys, Imperators, etc. This exploration goes over the budget of the first Mad Max (1979) in comparison to its predecessors. Explaining why Mad Max shifted to a post-apocalyptic setting. Answering the question, why did Max Rockatansky’s world end? What exactly led to The Fall? As well as using interviews to give us a the most accurate timeline of all of the events we've seen so far.
I use text from The Art of Mad Max: Fury Road by Abbie Bernstein and Mad Max: Fury Road: The Prelude to the Blockbuster Film! (2015) by George Miller to explain the events between Thunderdome and Fury Road. Like the Max competing in The People Eater’s Gas Town’s Thunderdome 2.0 or Colonel Joe Moore’s Siege of the Citadel. This information also helps us go more in-depth when it comes to the design of the cars (like the Gigahorse, The War Rig, The Buzzard Excavator, The Lone Wolf), the settlements, inhabitants, and creatures; and how they went on to become the inspiration for Bethesda’s Fallout Video Game Series.

I saw some video where they discussed the identity of MAX in fury road. He isn't the same Max according to that theory. Max in fury road is the grown feral child from Mad Max 2. 29:10 Great video BTW.
BetterHelp sucks they scammers
Crazy I remember when you only had like 300 subs and were doing some other random shit that I can’t remember all because of a message on my gta V phone saying to support you 😂 🎉
You're promoting a scam.
Bryce, you sound so douchy, bro.
When the max and the gyro captain meet in mm3, they share a look of " don't I know you " can't be the only one who noticed that
miller has said in interviews that after Mad Max 1, there isn't a fixed timeline that we see the stories told about MAX through oral history and legend.
Also the mad Max game is an excellent source of lore
Did you know that Scrotus is in Furiosa?
He’s redesigned for the better imo, and he’ll be played by Josh Helman (Slit)
@@ultraviolet540 didnt know that, thanks
The game shows max had a teen daughter and that scrotus is just a bad guy while he actually is a son of Immortan Joe. The game stole future scripts and used them in the wrong way. None of it is canon
@@yourkeel9012 they didn't steal anything, they got concept art to work from while the movie was filming,
@@gawkthimm6030 nope. if you see the credits Miller isn't there. he said tht they stole the scripts cause of the rights warnerbros had and that the story was supposed to be really different. The true story of hope and glory is said in the comic book he has writed
Bro forgot the videogame
If I remember that game isn't cannot. But that's good hidden gem
The game sadly isn’t canon, but it’s just considered another legend of the wastes.
@@FischerFilmStudio actually it is
@@Evangelicalg the Mad Max canon is so convoluted that whether something is canon or not is always up to debate, but some things in the Mad Max game have been pretty much completely changed in Furiosa, most noticeably Scrotus.
Regarding Barter Town, Katherine Janeway summed it up nicely "Someone has something someone else wants and trade is born"
The best theory I've ever heard for the shakiness of any definitive mad max timeline is that when you're watching a mad max movie, you're watching a folk tale about an archetypal "man in black" or "knight errant" that is told and retold and changed in a verbal history, rather than watching the events depicted first-hand (like the viewer is watching a cinematic adaptation of a story told around campfires in the wasteland) The max's are always different men, who only maybe existed in any sense, and whose actions in the wasteland inspired stories of influential strangers that got blended into a monomyth. It's the head-canon I live with anyway
There's a Nissan R32 Skyline in Fury Road. There's also a Tesla emblem on the dashboard of the Gigahorse. There isn't supposed to be a set year timeframe.
Bryce making a forty five minute video dedicated to Mad Max??
SIGN ME *THE FUCK* UP!
Can’t thank you enough for this long in depth video on the wasteland of Mad Max.
Quentin Kenihan, who plays Imortan Joe's son, Corpus Collosus, was told by doctors he probably wouldn't live long enough to see puberty, let alone live up to the age of 50.
I'm really glad to see he's still here with us and was ecstatic to see him in the mad max movie.
He’s not with us anymore. He died in 2018. 😢
@@shaun3276Richard Carter is in Furiosa, even though he sadly passed in 2019, I wonder if there is any footage with Quentin Kenihan, since he did say he was reprising his role before he passed.
@@shaun3276 oh no! 😪
i thought Rictus Erectus was Immortan Joe's son
@@raidermaxx2324he has a few sons. Idk who is whom. So idk who to grieve for so I shall look it up now.
Also lead additives in fuel weren't officially banned until 1991 so it's possible that excessive use of lead additives in gasoline could also significantly contribute to the fall of society.
My dad watched these movies as a kid. I will always remember when we found the disc set that had road warrior and thunder dome. We watched RW and I loved it so much. I already had experience with Mad Max because I played the 2015 video game but that was my first time watching any of the movies. That’s one of my favorite memories of my dad
Your dad was probably my contemporary. Probably just a few yrs older than me as I also grew up with them but a few yrs after they released. I watched them all the 90's in my early teens.
That means he was a young man. I'm sorry for your loss. I'm glad you preserve his memory, shiny and chrome as it is. The fun times, the times you bonded, the things you bonded over.
You'll do the same when you have some kids.
I lost my old man when I was 22. It didn't affect me that severely then. But it did fester, bc of the changes it caused. The losses it perpetuated. The path my life took as a result.
My point is don't let that happen. Idk how to avoid it but I will say my friends always said I was too focused on the past. I argued but now I know they were probably right.
At same time, I feel like it's a sin to forget what gave one's life meaning. We honor our parents by remembering all they gave us. But I'm far less well adjusted so I wouldn't worry
" hey fella! Hey fella!.... What a turkey... Hey fella, you're a turkey! You know that?"
Nice to hear some insight into World of Mad Max
Another interesting thing is, a piece of ancillary media I can't remember stated the Pacific Ocean is drastically more shallow and receded while the Atlantic is flooded and the Ice Caps have melted. This is because the fact all the nuclear weapons in the world being shot in all directions from 7 different nations had tectonic/volcanic consequences that significantly altered ocean currents (which, in turn lose their ability to regulate climate). So, it's said Sidney harbor is dry and we see the salt desert that used to be underwater because the Australian Pacific Coast is now 500km further out. It creates an environmental feedback loop with the additional myriad effects of nuclear war that affect the entire area of the world and keep getting worse. Meanwhile, coastal America and Europe are now underwater and the effects of nuclear war are likely even worse there. Meaning these parts of the world are even more irradiated with infrastructure even more ruined while being submerged and possibly even seeing a mini Ice Age. Not good.
kinda like the Metro 2035 lore
sounds like it was more than just a "nuclear skirmish" between two warring tribes
I was 18 years old when mad max came out and one of my friends older brother was in the vigalanties mc. 13 years later i moved into a house a few streets away from mays house. Cheers from Australia
The first Mad Max I saw was Thunderdome (also how I learned who Tina Turner was 😂) nice to hear about it again. "2 men enter, 1 man leaves!"
For the budget of the original movie, they put out a really good product, especially for that time.
.. a timeless classic
I love when the war boys say witness me and spray that paint over their face
It's kinda funny to me just how random Bryce picks his topics to go over.
I feel like Max is a name given to heroes by the storyteller. Anyone could be Max
The making of Mad Max could be a movie all on it's own!
Max explained it to the children in the third movie. I don't remember the explanation but explained why world is a desert. I think they mean revolution, not evolution. Like the heroes of the American Revolution were considered villains by the King.
Definitely more Mad Max please.
Pre Mad Max and what started the fall was the Persian Gulf War (that's the Two Tribes but it was more like two major military forces and their allies). Mad Max - Mid-1980s Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior - Late 1980s Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome - Mid-2000s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga - 2030s Mad Max: Fury Road - Late-2040s. Max would have been in his twenties for the original He was still looking freakishly good for his age in Thunderdome and more "Immortan" than Joe by Fury Road.
I DONT KNOW WHO IS MORE MAD, ME OR THIS WORLD!
The reason I think Jedediah and the Gyro Captain are the same characters is that Max recognises him later on in the film. Well, come to think of it Jedediah recognises Max in the Thunderdome
Excited to see this video! Super bummed to see you pushing Better Help after they repeatedly have been busted not background checking their “therapists” or having any accountability for them pissing on video calls or missing appointments or all sorts of things, including selling your data.
The very first Mad Max movie stars that the world went to war over fuel
some elaboration on some of the lore, the MFP was a special force above normal police that served as the last line of enforcement on the open roads. was a highly dangerous job with a short life expectancy for its officers. Max points out in the first film discussing his retirement that he has lived far longer than anyone in the department, wishing to get out before he dies or consumed with PTSD from the job. then as the story unfolds he snaps, hence Mad Max, I also never thought Nightrider was ever mad but was in a state of an adrenaline rush, as he just escaped custody, killed his parole officers and stole the MFP Pursuit car ie. the black Holden HQ, which the black XB max takes is the replacement for. I also consider the pilot the same character, and his son the product of the blonde he fancies in MM2. could also be the same bum in the matrix, or the mouth of Sauron, that actor gets around.
I think the 45 years since the fall is in referral to the first mad max movie coming out exactly 45 years ago
That was awesome. The one detail that bugs me, is that by Fury Road most steering wheels are "RHT" set up, even though the entire story should take place in a world where "LHT" was predominant, and all salvaged vehicles should reflect that with the steering on the right side of the vehicle.
I'm only disturbed by MadMax's age in Fury Road. The problem that he's young and states that he was a enforcer ones, states that the Apocalypse happened not long ago, but when you look at the surroundings, and people of young adult age(war boys, daughters of Immortal Joe), established constructions it looks like they happened long ago, which contradicts the short span of time from the Fall. Max should have been the same age as Immortal Joe and other warbosses, then it would bake sense.
Please dive deeper into Mad Max in more videos. Thank you.
I wouldn't have thought that listening to 45 mins of minutes of detail about a series of moves I enjoyed but didn't think too much about would be interesting but you Bryce have changed my mind
I just want to say thank you for educating me I am a long time fan of Mad Max but I did not see that coming I didn't know anything about the comic book references and how it all tied in thank you very much
Mad Max is the greatest film ever made, for proof just look how many times people reference it, and take ideas from it and the art Style, and even the story, in movies, TV shows, video games and music, books, comics and mangas.
Great Stuff. love the detail as I was not aware of many of the details you gave. I think I'm going to have to find the mad max comic you were showing!
Since I was a kid I've always loved the mad Max movies. Something in them just spoke to me that this was going to be the future. Horrible people fighting for what's left of resources. But the way they use Joe in the fury road movie. in the way he uses the ideal of The Valkyrie snatching you from the battlefield to bring you Valhalla.that was just chef's kiss on that world.from the moment the first war boy yelled witnessed me as he falls out the citadel trying to get max back in. I know this movie was going to blow my mind. I can't even imagine if they actually gave Miller the money and kept on the series back in the day with Mel Gibson. How many delightful wonderful tasty treats we would have I don't know but it sounds good
the buzzards vehicles always remind me of one of the cars from the Australian movie The Cars that Ate Paris (1974)
Great video. I could tell you put ALOT of time and energy into this video. It deserves more views!
Likely one of the reasons Thunderdome is rated PG 13 is because that rating didn’t exist until around the time it came out… though I doubt the first 2 movies would have made that cut lol.
Super cool video. That's a bit of a heavy lift thinking that The Great Humongous was Goose but it's a cool theory.
Pardon but the "Fall" happens between Mad Max and the Road Warrior, Nukes are used between Road Warrior and Thunderdome. No radiation in story before Thunderdome or Furry Road.
Thx now i understand the movie Hop and Glory much better!
Brilliant recap and insight! Thank you!
I know your Hunger Games videos didn’t get the most views, but I really enjoyed all of them
11:18 fukushima nuclear power plant was active in 1971 the fall happened in 1983-1984 7:29 it definitely would have been a known place in the wasteland and Japan and the outback are close
yea but it didnt melt down until in the 2000's so it doenst make sense to reference it
Incredible work, Bryce! I have only seen Fury Road, but the franchise stuck with me. I learned so much from this video! Excited to see the new Furiosa. Thanks!
loving the vid, beard looks great!
I literally just found your videos today and my FAVORITE part is your incoherent rants and side tangents and I feel like you deserve to know that
Damn now I'm hella interested in this whole world of Mad Max! I love these explanation vids, easy to understand while also being super in detail of the world and it's inhabitants. I 💚 it!!
you are all wrong and really need to watch the movies again. Mad Max 1 is set just as the fabric of society is collapsing, Mad Max 2 is set after the apocalypse, Beyond thunderdome makes it clear a nuclear event happened, Fury road has war boys with cancer from the radiation.
I replaced my therapist with chatgpt
I love that they're called the Boobalini. Totally love it.
As a long time fan of the MM franchise, this was awesome!! Nice work
My theory is that the mad max stories are actually a fairy tale told amongst tribals. The first movie is the closest to reality, the second contains several actual events, but by the time of 3, the character of max and the events surrounding him are mostly mythological
The Fuk-Mishima in pre disaster dialogue is just an example of synchronicity where two unrelated events happen simultaneously. If you google it they’ll give you many examples. These “ coincidences happen all the time. I myself experience it daily. Look to the long running animation The Simpsons. They’re consistently “predicting” events that eventually happen.
This was really engaging.
This video is really making me want to replay the game
Very will done. More please!!
The Apocalyptic world created by George Miller reminds me of George Martin’s world in Game of Thrones. The history, religion, characters, locations, language etc.
Of course its not as vast a history or immense as Martin’s world but impressive just the same.
I’m asking here since it’s his most recent video. Does he have a video about the hunger games after the war? I saw his haymitch video where he talks about him raising geese at the end. Do any of you know where al that info is or if he’s made a video.
good stuff, very informative🙂🙂
Good stuff!
I get to regularly fang my black V8 2 door Australian built ute on the same roads the first movie was filmed on and have parked ute in the same carpark that was used as the set for the scene when Max gets his 2 door XB Falcon.
ute lol .. reminds me of our El caminos
@@raidermaxx2324 Mate Australia is like the country where the El Camino continued to evolve. i drive a VE SS ute. The same model of ute was used top help research and devolep for the new rear engined Corvette. To much beer to spell.
I dont think the host is that "young", but Fukushima wasnt famous around the nuclear "ethos" only because the 2011 accident. Fukushima was famous already during the late 70s and early 80s as part of the project that would propel Japan to the forefront of the use of nuclear energy, a fact very much in notoriety given that a country which was the only one ever destroyed by a nuclear bomb would be the forefront of the nuclear energy "ideal". The plant started operation on those times, and through the 80s was considered one of the safest in the World.
It is proposed that if they did not changed its design philosophy during the 90s, and instead kept their focus, the accident in 2011 would never have happened, as people point out changes for efficiency in the 1990s and 2000s were the primary drive to the weakness that the accident relied on to happen.
Fukishima was famous??? not in my country(America) we never heard of it until it melted down lol
1963 - Max's Birthdate
1980 - The Fall
1984 - Mad Max (1)
1987 - Road Warrior
1997 - Furiosa's Birthdate
1999 - Nuclear War
2005 - Thunderdome
2007 - Furiosa (beginning)
2025 - Furiosa (ending)
2032 - Fury Road
This is all based on legitimate on screen evidence such as the sign in Max 1, as and Max’s back tattoo in Fury Road, as well as too many interviews to count.
Very very very good job!!!!!
On the gambling aspect, i fully agree. Max loots a body in road warrior next to the gyro and discovers 1 dice. And he tosses it to the side. Probably an explanation of characteristics, max not being a gambler that is.
Ah, the way I'll rewatch this series as I've rewatched the Hunger Games' videos 😌
In this universe Gas really cost an Arm and Two Legs😢😊
When it says a few years from now , it refers to the time your viewing it not when the movie was made . This way it stays evergreen .
Thanks!
Thank you so much @ZED101!
The comics were a mistake. They probably shouldn’t be considered canon.
First time on the channel so not sure if you've ever covered gaming content. But ther is a mad max game that released in 2016 and its quite fun
Big fan of The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunder dome as a kid. I watched Mad Max a few times but I was so confused. It is not post apocalypse and I cant understand anything they say. I still appreciate it tho.
But I was so fucking excited for Fury Road. It was critically acclaimed. And it had a little of all my favorite shit except maybe sci fi but some a that too.
I won't say I was disappointed but I would've been if not for one thing: the dude playing a monster double guitar FLAME THROWER and he's on like a giant speaker car and he's also on bungie cords.
That was and remains the most Rock 'N Roll thing Ive ever witnessed. It is so fucking cool. That alone made it worth it
“The wasteland of *Mad Max* explained”
Puts a big pic of furiosa on the thumbnail
The actual video starts at 3:28
It would be cool if the book of Eli and mad max was set in the same universe
Well that just kinda ended abruptly!
Part 2 when???
I always wondered how all of the Tribe didn't immediately die of radiation sickness. It's like, all that red dust accumulated and making up more of the air than oxygen? Yeah. That's all going to be highly-radioactive. You can literally SEE the fallout lol.
Unless, umm...life...finds a way and people born into the post-nuclear world maybe have developed partial resistance to radiation.
if you think that, then how did anybody survive?? in fact The Tribe was in the perfect place to avoid the Fallout in the "Crack of the earth" with fresh running water from the aquifers
@@magnusmaul5447 highly unlikely. If at all like real life and not fantasy, resistence to radiation only occurs in lifeforms like bacteria or other primitive lifefiorms like catfish, because of how short their generational reproductive cycle's are. For humans to become resistent to radiation it would take thousands of years, due to how slowly we reproduce and how long our lifespans are compared to bacteria or fish . But thats why wolves and catfish developed resistence in Chernobyl, but any human being in the villages surrounding the Soviets nuclear bomb test sites (The Polygon) the offspring are horribly deformed or born dead.
@raidermaxx2324 yeah, as you read, that was an "unless maybe" comment. So, we're in agreement that, we're it truly a global nuclear conflagration sufficient to have planet-wide effects would likely mean cities directly hit would be lethal for at least 100 years, likely more?
Ive always called a couple =2, a few =3, several =4.
Loved the Fallout game reference.
"Capitalist clothing"
Bruh you mean a suit?
Not big on police but hopefully Miller repaid their coolness
i felt like im watching an interview !!
Imagine being a local and you can't get home because some Hollywood dip is filming...
I have always understood a few to have a default of 3 unless specified.
The weird thing is crows are smart there not falling for the Sky Fishers bullshit
In the third part of Mad Max, when he meets Captain Giro, he says "I know you, you have a plane" Something like that. I'd say you missed it.

Okay correction....
The Lost Tribe?
Is actually called, "The Waiting Ones".
Google that 💩!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Come on. If anyone deserves a comic or series based on them, it's Lord Humungus. He's the most woke and well spoken character in the entire series. So picture this.
We start with Hugo, or Humungus, and his life partner Geoffrey raising their two adopted children in the last years humanity. He works as a liberal arts professor with a major in English literature. Geoffrey is a child psychologist and a prominent author of parenting books.
During season/part 1 they watch as the world goes crazy around them. Resources are dwindling and armed militia start fighting off gangs of highway men. Paranoia and polarization of groups drives deeper wedges into society. Anyone different is dangerous.
Then famen leads to plague as the dead start piling. Geoffrey and Hugo gather their family and gather their family and head out into the wild as lynch mobs of the bigots and ignorant gather groups of minorities and fringe groups for execution.
They join the first wave of road people. Others who have fled the chaos spreading.Traveling from safe place to safe place. Geoffrey helps with medical and psychiatric trauma, Hugo becomes the defacto teacher for the caravan. They find peace.
Meanwhile the cities are falling apart. The militias have devolved into raiders. Starvation and cannibalism are a daily fact. The world governments are at each other's throats. Border wars are springing up everywhere. People join the military in droves just to eat. Then the bombs drop.
Driven out of the cities by the fallout, the raiders begin attacking farming communities, small towns and caravan groups. Among them is Hugo and Geoffrey's caravan while crossing the irradiated Australian Outback.
The raiders leave the group of adults and children to die in the harsh wasteland. We follow their journey and hardship as they must fight for their very survival. Hugo has to watch as Geoffrey slowly dies, waisting away as they both refuse to partake in any cannibalism or ill gained food and water. He watches as one by one the people he loves most die in front of him.
The last of the caravan people think they have found salvation as cars approach but find themselves forced into cruel slavery. Hugo is forced to fight other slaves for food for him and his only surviving son. His size earns him a new name, Humungus.
Geoffrey organizes a rebellion among the slaves. During the battle the slaves are cut down in waves. Geoffrey among them. Humungus' face is burned off by a flamethrower. In the end the last 5 surviving slaves band together as a new raider group and decide to raise the children strong. To take whatever they need. To never be weak again.
And leading them? The Atolla of RocknRolla. The Warrior of the Wasteland. The God among us.
Lord Humungus!
Excellent, good writing!
Mad Max isn't Post Apocalyptic.
It's what happens when regular Australians take a wrong turn and get lost in the Outback for a few hours.
Good video👍🇦🇺 i’m Australian from Victoria
You should totally check out Wasteland Weekend
this being Australia, I blame Pauline anson for the fall...

Well, if you adjust the film's budget for inflation, it still only comes out to around $1.5 million...
Imagine that kind of success in 2024. We get about a dozen movies per year with a budget near $100M and they are almost always huge flops. That doesn't even consider the fact that marketing budgets are typically around 1.5× the production budget.
Hollywood/film industry seems like a huge money laundering scheme nowadays doesn't it?
