To be fair, 9 out 10 gladiators never died and most of the gladiators were free men who took the job of being a gladiator to earn money. And it WAS like WWE of that times and it was mostly for betting and romans used to bet on anything.
That little mini rant about “bad scripts” at the end is SO TRUE. You simply cant have a good movie with a poor script, UNLESS you just go total camp. But for dramas, it’s ESSENTIAL.
@ I’ve never seen Blade, but I’d definitely argue The Mattix had a solid script. Maybe not the best dialogue, but a well constructed and engaging story. I probably should have used the word “screenplay” instead of script.
@ which ones dark city again? Is that the one Sam Raimi directed? Um, yeah I guess I disagree. I think aspects of The Matrix’s screenplay were pretty substantial in changing movies and culture. I think the most impactful and memorable part of that movie was Morbius asking Neo if he wanted the red or blue pill. That was all impactful because of a well written screen play. And yeah, of course the action helped, but the concepts and screenplay in the Matrix were pretty solid and led to that being a hugely influential movie.
That "bad shot" is clearly a homage to the first one. Russell did run upstairs in EXACTLY the same way. In fact, people at the theater said when that shot came out: " He runs upstairs exactly like his father".
The script for Gladiator one famously wasn't finished when they were doing that movie so after all these years Ridley decided to do it the right way. Right a repeat of the first one, structure it as well as they can and then film it with their mind at ease. Apparently, it's all about rectifying lucky turnarounds in this life.
The final scene of this movie justified its existence as far as I’m concerned. based on that final scene, I assume that Lucius finally became the emperor he should’ve been. Overall, once I ignore some of the elementary aspects of the script at times and some inconsistencies and abrupt character motivation changes overall I was entertained.
i have no idea why the mixed reviews. i enjoyed this movie so much. Denzel and the cast brought it. alot of action, no over the top love story, and descent story. i didn't even feel the 2 plus hours. next up.wicked for me
Grace staunchly supports Tony Stark trying to kill poor Bucky when he finds out about his momma, but doesn't get Lucius killing Macrinus who did it on purpose lol.
@@seancoetzee5399 Yeah Gladiator 2 wasn't well-written and Captain America Civil War was, the writing isn't what I'm questioning. I'm questioning her wanting Lucius to have empathy for an outright villain who shot an arrow into his mom's chest in an absurd third act.
I don’t know about this one Grace, I think this movie comes off great....like all your complaints sound more like personal nitpicks. I don't disagree with some of your ideas on how some of the character motivations and actions could have took place and for sure made everything better....but for you to even say "don't even bother seeing this movie in theaters" in your non-spoiler review kind of hurts because I think this movie still does pretty well to at least warrant that.
The movie should have been about Denzel's character. To believe Macrinus would have just jumped on a horse to fight Lucius...it just took me out. It was like I was literally watching them wrap up the movie. I was excited to see Macrinus take over Rome and interested in his back story. He would have been a great villain for Gladiator 3. They botched it. They struggled to find a motivation for Lucius.
If you can get past the shaky script due to having such an ensemble cast, the film is a fantastic summer blockbuster. I saw it through the lens of an extended Game of Thrones episode and lost myself in the magic. Denzel is absolute magic 👌🏾✨
The reason why I'm happy with this sequel is the first one had one major hole. The actual future of Rome and the impact of Maximus. This film really helped with that.
Macrinus, according to historical records, died a year after assassinating Caracalla. His main goal was to become Emperor of Rome not watch it burn like the joker, which he achieved briefly before being overthrown in a rebellion led by Lucius, the rightful heir to the throne. This dynamic and its implications were explained in the movie, though you seemed to have willfully ignore it just to crap on an excellent sequel. FYI: It’s never made clear if Macrinus knew Lucius was Maximus son or not. He was just using him to set his revenge and power grab in motion.
Whilst I completely agree that she has glazed over the facts and not understood the film at all like you have, it was not a good sequel. No sequel would work for a film as a perfect as Gladiator. Ultimately I don’t think this film should have been made. Fun and entertaining, but slightly taints the legacy of the film I consider the greatest ever.
@ It really didn’t taint the first film at all. Go read about the original script, it could have truly tarnished the legacy of the first movie. As far as modern sequels go, this was solid. The main issue is that it’s hard to relate to Lucius. The actor playing him doesn’t have the same charismatic presence on screen as Russell Crowe did. Instead, you find yourself identifying more with Macrinus, who is far more charismatic.
Excellent sequel? I didn't care about a single character. CGI looked terrible. Performances were pretty bad outside of Denzel. Plot was all over the place. You gotta watch better movies if you think this is excellent.
Doesn’t mean he still didn’t cause Rome to implode as the video mentioned, in the movie and perhaps in history as well. Everyone can tell he wanted to be emperor but he didn’t do a good job of it in the movie which she’s pointing out.
The movie draaaagsss ooooon, I don't think Paul is miss casted but there's both lack of direction (or complete trust on the actor) and the fact that he's not speaking on his native accent (while everybody else is allowed) doesn't help, instead of acting grand magnanimous etc he ends up being stoic, he shines on the more personal interactions tho and ofc on every physical aspect of the movie. We know this is not history accurate film but sharks? that whole section is a waste of time. Maybe after this Riddley will stop getting this huge budgets and now i really doubt hell get more alien movies.
I actually was pleasantly surprised by the film but I do agree with allot of the criticism. Cgi sharks and gladiators do not mix, you might as well put dinosaurs in the arena if your going to go over the top to that degree. The twin emperors are seriously underwritten and frankly Caricatures The score is weak and very forgettable
I just saw Gladiator 2 Grace. You are right about the plot. It felt really rush, espically towards the end. On the bright side, Denezal Washington's character does steal the show as he uses all the characters, including Lucious in his bid to take the throne. The other problem is Paul Mescal. Listen i like the guy and he does have a look about him that screams badass. The problem though is that there are moments where he does go full Russal Crowe. Same with the two actors as the emporers, you could tell they were trying not to use Jaquin phoneix's performence, but it does come out once or twice. Overall a very enjoyable, if not mismatch film. I give it 5 out of 10.
I really like Denzel, he’s one of my favorite actors but I didn’t really enjoy him in this film. Idk, the whole time I just saw Denzel as he is in his other films. I don’t know how to explain it very well but I was not really impressed. I thought Paul was fine though. I loved the artwork of the opening scenes and the nice references to the first film. I think the score was pretty forgettable though, aside from the song at the end, which was in the first film. Overall, I thought this movie was good, it was better than I thought it’d be but nowhere near as great as the first one.
Don't forget the changes it made to the first film. Maximus apparently still loved Lucilla but abandoned her while she was married to another man and while she was impregnated by him. Even though Maximus was not fond of Lucilla the last time he saw her as was established by the first film, and Maximus said he respected Lucilla's husband. And then it's revealed in II that Lucilla felt she needed to send Lucius away after the events of the first film because she feared for his safety, but why didn't she do that in the first film when her brother was bascially trying to kill her son? A lot of people lost their lives because of her son.
I liked the movie. I understand that it has several problems, but I found it extremely entertaining and the audience that saw the movie with me even applauded at the end.
If anything, David Scarpa sn't half the screen writer that David Franzoni and John Logan are. And that's probably the most glaring mistake Ridley Scott made with "Gladiator II". He should've brought them back and we'd have a chance at a great film instead of something that is, merely good.
I completely agree, Grace. I felt so disappointed with this sequel. 🤦🏻♂️ I hated how it basically undid the first film’s victory and just replayed the story beats to do the same thing again. Thank you for making me not feel alone.
What pissed me off the most was when the main character was chasing Denzel at the end on his horse and nobody in the army tried to stop him from getting ti denzel. And let him end up getting behind Denzel
I watched it last night with my friends and overall we enjoyed it. However, I thought the sharks in the arena was a bit too much. Rome had co emperors before. Lucilla's first husband, Lucius Verrus, was a co emperor with Marcus Aurelius, which made Lucilla an empress. You'd think they'd mention that since it would give Lucilla and Lucius more clout. (Except that it's seemingly common knowledge now that Lucius was actually Maximus's son. Illegitimacy, who cares?) 😂
@TheMantis1968 Well, in G1Lucius is said to be 8yo (though they say he was 12yo in G2) and Maximus's son with his wife was 'nearly 8'. So Maximus didn't necessarily have an affair if he met his wife after leaving Lucilla and quickly having a kid. Though Lucilla definitely would have been having an affair with him. In G1, Commodus never thinks Lucius is Maximus's son, he just hates that Lucilla at one point loved him. There's one line where Lucilla is speaking to Maximus and says she's living in fear 'because your son is heir to the throne'. She's speaking in 2nd person, not really telling Maximus that Lucius is his son. But it's a line that could be easily reinterpreted that way, sneakily.
Yeah. They really did May Calamawy dirty. Whether or not it was because she's of Palestinian descent, it's insulting that she had what promised to be a pretty big role reduced to a background cameo.
