Actually its a historical fact the colloseum was flooded with water , on one occasion its stated. But there were definitely no sharks totally impossible. Top gladiators who were very popular , would not normally be killed as they brought in a lot of money to the games . But many people were killed in gladitorial games, especially slaves who were expendable. also there were gladiators who were profesional and so were paid. That is they were no longer slaves but free men but loved being a gladiator.
Kind of like physical demanding sports like UFC, Boxing and Football..once a athlete reaches a certain status it takes a lot of money to get dirty or put their image through damage

They had full mini ship battles called naumachia . No way they were getting sharks in there. We have a hard enough time in modern days keeping them alive in captivity, and we can ship truck full of salt water wherever and have complicative ways of keeping the water filtered and oxygenated.
The Colosseum actually had mock ship battles on water. They would flood the floor high enough for flat-bottomed ships to float, but shallow enough for people not to drown

How did they get that much water into the arena and how did it stay in the arena. Go dig a hole in your backyard, fill it with water and see what happens. The water will continue to sink to the water table level, unless you seal the hole. Was it technically possible to put water in the Colosseum, yes. Think about all the issues that come with doing that. Perhaps they tried it once, it could not have gone well.
Everybody is going to watch this movie for Denzel. Nobody asked for Gladiator 2, but when we found out he was casted, we were like “Well now you have my attention.”

As for fights to the death in the arenas, yes gladiators weren't killed as often as Hollywood portrays but they did kill plenty of slaves and people condemned to death. And they did bring in plenty of exotic animals to showcase and sometimes use in the arenas.

Love you guys and have been following you for ages. So just wanted to let you know that if something is taking you out of a historical movie, it's good to research. You might be surprised, and you won't be taken out of the movie. Give some filmmakers the benefit of the doubt, and maybe question your own doubts.
I loved this one. The action was good and Denzel Washington was spectacular. He played a metaphor for the sins of Rome coming back to haunt them. "A plague on both your houses."

It’s not like his wife was murdered in bed as a civilian, she willingly took up a bow, was killing people on the wall, and he never had any issues with that. Shocker, the archers are usually the first to get attacked in sieges. They’re very dangerous, but also lightly armoured. So I can’t exactly sympathize, since it was a situation where she was killing people and could defend herself. It wasn’t a murder, it was a war casualty.

Yeah I agree. The first one, Maximus is a beloved, loyal general of Rome who just wants to go home and didn’t want to take up another bloody campaign for this new emperor, who Maximus knows isn’t the real emperor. So commodus sends the praetorian guard to his house to kill his family. Lucius’s wife died by fucking around and finding out. Not to say he wouldn’t want revenge for Rome killing his wife, but the two storylines just aren’t quite the same in the emotional impact it gives you.
If you go into it wanting to hate it , you will. If you want an action spectacular? You will enjoy it. If you love Denzel? You will love it. If you go with an open mind, it's a great movie.
I know these guys over embellish for comedic value, but let's be real. The first Gladiator was not a paragon of historical accuracy. There was no Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commodus did not die in the arena (although it was intoned that he appeared as a contestant in the arena (heavily scripted). And so on. I'm not defending a movie I haven't even seen yet but I am calling out similar shortcomings in the preceding masterpiece.
Ridley Scott even said that he didn’t want to make a historically accurate film for the first Gladiator movie. He wanted to make a movie like the sword and sandal Hollywood epics of Spartacus, Cleopatra, and even Caligula. That is very much what the first Gladiator movie is; a larger than life, fantastic version of the Ancient Roman Empire.
I agree with Corey on how Lucius's vendetta against Acacius didn't feel justified. Not when his wife tried to take him out from on top the battlements. Acacius was literally acting in self defense when he ordered his archers to shoot her.

Why not? We don't know for sure. The Empire lasted for a while. It's historical fiction. They had water in the arena, and they had exotic animals. It's not that much of a stretch.

It's kinda funny how Martin complains about that rhino's horn being way too large for its head when in reality actual rhino horns can get MUCH longer and even heftier than that. The one in the movie is actually just a bit over average sized for a white rhino (which is the species of rhino used in that scene) XD
It also depend who was emperor at the time. Most emperor did not want to see death, but some of the more insane ones demanded death. If the Gladiator died the Roman state reimburse the owner for the death of the gladiator.
I just seen it, I thought it was a 7/10 just about. Mescal's Gladiator had no depth at all, pretty gutted as I thought he would be terrific, he is a very good actor, but yes, the script did nothing for him here, nothing to work with. The ending scene was really odd to me, I was waiting for some words explaining what happened next or something, but nope. Connie Neilsen was very good in her parts, as was Denzil. An enjoyable BIG Screen movie though, glad I saw it in the cinema
I thought it was a pretty good action film but I preferred Napoleon since both were directed by Ridley Scott. Also, can we just appreciate the fact Ridley Scott is 86 years old and is still churning out enjoyable popcorn movies. He could’ve taken the Coppola route and make weird Indy passion projects that make people forget how he was once one of the best directors dating from the 70’s-early 90’s.
I don't think anybody's watching this for a 100% accurate historic epic they're just watching it for the concepts taken from history sandwiches into a movie that looks awesome but that's it
I knew it was going to be historically inaccurate because the first one was but the story itself was bullshit. They tried to fit a square peg in a round hole.
That's the main problem with the sequel. They did flood it but it was the first 10 years of opening it, but then they dug out the floor to house the animals and fighters like we saw in the first one so backwards. Historians also say that their were actually three places they held games and one was right by the sea so they just dug a tunnel and let the water and whatever else flood in so sharks are possible but not in the actual Coliseum we know today.
I’m sure Korey and Martin get into this but when I first heard that this was happening my first thoughts were: “How? Why?” The first Gladiator was such a complete and self-contained story that I had no clue how they were going to make a natural story flow out of the first one. I’ll probably still see it at some point just because I’m so morbidly curious how much of a crazy film it’ll be and I just love Roman history so much I tend to just watch any piece of Ancient Roman media regardless of how inaccurate or bad it is.
I watched it last night. I really liked it. I think it has the same apeall that the original did in that before then there was Sparticus and gladitor had the benift of having that film as a blueprint but the style and texh of the time. G2 is the same thing except they havevhad the beneift of havings tons and tons of stuff to draw inspiration from like GoT, ROME, ect. The opening battle has some things in there that you see in like modern action films in terms of like how they show the brute power of some of these weapons . Someone gets impailed with a launced stake that literally lifts them off the ground. Nothing like that in G1.
Ridley Scott even said that he wanted to make the first Gladiator like the Hollywood sword and sandal epics. Spartacus, Cleopatra, and even Caligula are obvious visual influences on it. What I find most interesting is that first came Gladiator, then came Pompeii which was a ripoff of Gladiator, and then came Gladiator 2 which seems to have more than a little influence from Pompeii as well as being a retread of Gladiator. “Oh no. I’ve gone cross-eyed.”

I wasnt able to connect to this movie like original. In the original the issue was the huge betrayal and the stakes felt personal. They spent time establishing the CHARACTERS rather than giving just flimsy motivation
It actually was going to be even more insane than this compare to some of the first ideas for a sequel. My favorite, would had to be bringing back Maximus by entering the afterlife where the dying Roman Gods would had send Maximus on a assassination mission to Earth to kill Jesus and his apostles only for Maximus to pull a Terminator 2 and become Jesus's bodyguard 😂 I think it was even called Gladiator 2: Salvation or Messiah. Apparently, Russell Crowe hated the script.

I love Corey but he's exactly like so many UA-cam reactors who watch historical movies and have this inclination to question the accuracy of things with no knowledge and too much confidence. People would be surprised by how crazy history is. Viewers these days never give the filmmakers the credit that they'd maybe know better. Things like the sharks aren't probable but it's not that removed from what WAS possible (like staging navel battles in the Colosseum after being filled with water).
They had sharks, rhinos, alligators, lions amd tigers..A lot of people did die. They would have people who had crossed the church face gladiators. They also had them against wild animals. A lot of people were also burnt to death in the coliseum. They didn't dig deep into their history. Rome was very sadistic.
One correction there was no Church in the Roman empire period during the Coluseum events, they worshipped Zeus, and other mythological idols, they were threatened by the spread of The Way, people who repented and chose to follow the ways of Christ, and the authorities felt threat to worship of the Emperor, However, your right Christians, followers of Christ were persecuted, tortured , murdered in the Roman arenas, some records advise they would put animal skin on them and let wild animals lose on them for entertainment, very sadistic, The Church actually didn't develop until centuries later, the Church actually went contrary to the Bible and was the period when apostasy set in
Korey is being a little exaggerated with the whole shark thing. The sharks were a little silly, but can easily be looked past. The baboons were actually more goofier while the rhino scene was the most “believable”. I saw the movie and it moved at a good clip. It’s not deep, but it was fun. Honestly, it promised what was advertised--gladiators fighting, and you get plenty of it.
Lucius isnt his son....the whole point of the first movie was his wife and child were killed. Lucius was the boy obsessed with him from the first movie his mom was ceasars sister..

I read the games went on for 500 years and they came up with all sorts of wacky ways to 'entertain' so them having sharks in the arena is not really a stretch to far in a movie about it.
I think Gladiator 2 should’ve been two hours of Russell Crowe yelling at the press not to ask him about Gladiator 2.

Yeah I agree. The first one, Maximus is a beloved, loyal general of Rome who just wants to go home and didn’t want to take up another bloody campaign for this new emperor, who Maximus knows isn’t the real emperor. So commodus sends the praetorian guard to his house to kill his family. Lucius’s wife died by fucking around and finding out. Not to say he wouldn’t want revenge for Rome killing his wife, but the two storylines just aren’t quite the same in the emotional impact it gives you.

I know these guys over embellish for comedic value, but let's be real. The first Gladiator was not a paragon of historical accuracy. There was no Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commodus did not die in the arena (although it was intoned that he appeared as a contestant in the arena (heavily scripted). And so on. I'm not defending a movie I haven't even seen yet but I am calling out similar shortcomings in the preceding masterpiece.
Ridley Scott even said that he didn’t want to make a historically accurate film for the first Gladiator movie. He wanted to make a movie like the sword and sandal Hollywood epics of Spartacus, Cleopatra, and even Caligula. That is very much what the first Gladiator movie is; a larger than life, fantastic version of the Ancient Roman Empire.
No historical fantasy is accurate. As long as it's done well, anyone should be able to enjoy it.
I agree with Corey on how Lucius's vendetta against Acacius didn't feel justified. Not when his wife tried to take him out from on top the battlements. Acacius was literally acting in self defense when he ordered his archers to shoot her.

Double Toasted makes jokes but there is documented evidence of the Coliseum being filled with water for naval battles. Though it likely was not at this period and there probably where not sharks. 😅

The rhino rider was definitely something you'd fight in Elden Ring.

Why not? We don't know for sure. The Empire lasted for a while. It's historical fiction. They had water in the arena, and they had exotic animals. It's not that much of a stretch.

@@lich109 Also piping salt water to the coliseum. The aqueducts relied on gravity feeding them. Rome is only 70 feet above sea level but that is a long 70 feet. Can a shark survive in fresh water for a while? Yes, but not for long.

It's kinda funny how Martin complains about that rhino's horn being way too large for its head when in reality actual rhino horns can get MUCH longer and even heftier than that. The one in the movie is actually just a bit over average sized for a white rhino (which is the species of rhino used in that scene) XD

It also depend who was emperor at the time. Most emperor did not want to see death, but some of the more insane ones demanded death. If the Gladiator died the Roman state reimburse the owner for the death of the gladiator.
I just seen it, I thought it was a 7/10 just about.
Mescal's Gladiator had no depth at all, pretty gutted as I thought he would be terrific, he is a very good actor, but yes, the script did nothing for him here, nothing to work with.
The ending scene was really odd to me, I was waiting for some words explaining what happened next or something, but nope.
Connie Neilsen was very good in her parts, as was Denzil.

I thought it was a pretty good action film but I preferred Napoleon since both were directed by Ridley Scott. Also, can we just appreciate the fact Ridley Scott is 86 years old and is still churning out enjoyable popcorn movies. He could’ve taken the Coppola route and make weird Indy passion projects that make people forget how he was once one of the best directors dating from the 70’s-early 90’s.
I don't think anybody's watching this for a 100% accurate historic epic they're just watching it for the concepts taken from history sandwiches into a movie that looks awesome but that's it
I knew it was going to be historically inaccurate because the first one was but the story itself was bullshit. They tried to fit a square peg in a round hole.
That's the main problem with the sequel. They did flood it but it was the first 10 years of opening it, but then they dug out the floor to house the animals and fighters like we saw in the first one so backwards. Historians also say that their were actually three places they held games and one was right by the sea so they just dug a tunnel and let the water and whatever else flood in so sharks are possible but not in the actual Coliseum we know today.
Sharks were never used in the coliseum. Crocodiles however were used a few times and was logistically easier to bring to the coliseum than a shark.
Early on, they did fight to the dead but later reformed it to save money. Only about 20% of the fights ending in fatalities

I’m sure Korey and Martin get into this but when I first heard that this was happening my first thoughts were: “How? Why?” The first Gladiator was such a complete and self-contained story that I had no clue how they were going to make a natural story flow out of the first one. I’ll probably still see it at some point just because I’m so morbidly curious how much of a crazy film it’ll be and I just love Roman history so much I tend to just watch any piece of Ancient Roman media regardless of how inaccurate or bad it is.

I watched it last night. I really liked it. I think it has the same apeall that the original did in that before then there was Sparticus and gladitor had the benift of having that film as a blueprint but the style and texh of the time. G2 is the same thing except they havevhad the beneift of havings tons and tons of stuff to draw inspiration from like GoT, ROME, ect. The opening battle has some things in there that you see in like modern action films in terms of like how they show the brute power of some of these weapons . Someone gets impailed with a launced stake that literally lifts them off the ground. Nothing like that in G1.
All i gotta say: ANYTHING WITH DENZEL WASHINGTON IS WORTH WATCHING.

Ridley Scott even said that he wanted to make the first Gladiator like the Hollywood sword and sandal epics. Spartacus, Cleopatra, and even Caligula are obvious visual influences on it.
What I find most interesting is that first came Gladiator, then came Pompeii which was a ripoff of Gladiator, and then came Gladiator 2 which seems to have more than a little influence from Pompeii as well as being a retread of Gladiator.

I wasnt able to connect to this movie like original. In the original the issue was the huge betrayal and the stakes felt personal. They spent time establishing the CHARACTERS rather than giving just flimsy motivation

I love Corey but he's exactly like so many UA-cam reactors who watch historical movies and have this inclination to question the accuracy of things with no knowledge and too much confidence. People would be surprised by how crazy history is.
Viewers these days never give the filmmakers the credit that they'd maybe know better. Things like the sharks aren't probable but it's not that removed from what WAS possible (like staging navel battles in the Colosseum after being filled with water).
Denzil Washington is my fav actor. Gonna watch for him!

They had sharks, rhinos, alligators, lions amd tigers..A lot of people did die. They would have people who had crossed the church face gladiators. They also had them against wild animals. A lot of people were also burnt to death in the coliseum. They didn't dig deep into their history. Rome was very sadistic.
They fed the Christians and Jews to the Lions for sport
One correction there was no Church in the Roman empire period during the Coluseum events, they worshipped Zeus, and other mythological idols, they were threatened by the spread of The Way, people who repented and chose to follow the ways of Christ, and the authorities felt threat to worship of the Emperor, However, your right Christians, followers of Christ were persecuted, tortured , murdered in the Roman arenas, some records advise they would put animal skin on them and let wild animals lose on them for entertainment, very sadistic, The Church actually didn't develop until centuries later, the Church actually went contrary to the Bible and was the period when apostasy set in

Korey is being a little exaggerated with the whole shark thing. The sharks were a little silly, but can easily be looked past. The baboons were actually more goofier while the rhino scene was the most “believable”. I saw the movie and it moved at a good clip. It’s not deep, but it was fun. Honestly, it promised what was advertised--gladiators fighting, and you get plenty of it.
Just saw it and surprisingly liked it a lot. It was the story for me. And you can tel Denzel was having so much fun with his character

Lucius isnt his son....the whole point of the first movie was his wife and child were killed. Lucius was the boy obsessed with him from the first movie his mom was ceasars sister..
It was heavily implied that Maximus had an affair with Commodus Sister before he married his wife. So it's very likely that Lucius is Maximus' son.
