  • ************ NOT FOR DODGE NITRO************
    I did some research and found out that this is not the same like I said in the video for a Dodge Nitro, sorry I should have looked that up before saying anything.
    In this episode of Project Renegade I show you how to remove and replace the rear upper control arm assembly on a Jeep Liberty. I believe this is the same for all Jeep liberty KJ models (2002-2007) I hope this video helps you out, enjoy and thanks for watching!

      @@RockyXTV This whole rear triangle design and its access to the ball joint is horrible. Here I am redoing this for the 5th or 6th time. No after market parts to support a lift and the lift eats the bushings up. The welds that hold the nuts in the body broke on mine. I am hunting for ideas. I have also tried redesigning this triangle with little success as of yet. However my newest design might work if I can get the bushings bolt out.
      I am sure you moved on by now. I like my pretend Jeep, but some of the design choices frustrate me. JBA stopped making parts for this and I am being forced to innovate or else.

    Rocky, thanks for making this video. The use of the ratchet strap was a life saver. It's important to make sure the ball joint stud is completely seated into the pinch bracket before inserting the bolt. Regarding the clunking sound, If your vehicle is equipped a locking rear differential you may need to change the fluid or have the clutches checked.

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  8 років тому

      Thanks for watching! I'm thinking I have some form of transmission issue, When I put it in gear it makes an almost electrical buzzing sound then "clunk" then it's in gear. It's at its worst when going from reverse to drive, almost like it's in neutral for a second, buzzes, clunk, then your ready to go. I'm pretty handy with vehicles but there is a small dark spot in my knowledge when it comes to "modern" transmissions. Thanks again!

    Hi, I also have a Jeep Renegade and my car is also doing that exact same noise as yours is, only thing is that I noticed while driving that mines starting to kinda give off a wobble feeling, the alignment goes off to the right now and car looks slightly slanted.

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  7 років тому

      This definitely would cause your noise and maybe a little wobble, but that is most likely another issue. Do you feel the wobble in the steering wheel? If so then most likely your wobble issue is something in the front, tie rod, wheel bearing, ball joint, unbalanced tire, ect. As for the slanted look, this could also be many things, struts, coil springs, ball joint. Most shops will give your Jeep a once over and give you some info on your issues, but never go ahead with the repairs they suggest until you talk with someone else that you trust. It's a very sad fact that most shops nowadays will take complete advantage of anyone. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, best of luck and let me know what the shop says, if you take it to one. Thanks for watching!

      @BentonL 2 роки тому +1

      @@RockyXTV Damn sorry to hear that.
      If you have not gave up on the project I got a few things dialed in.
      I got the rear a arm mod down. I will have to do it again because I got a junk a arm.
      The fronts use ARB 2927 old man emu springs instead of spacers. The spacers ruin the ride on these. The rest of the stuff I have done is over kill. If you want pictures or terrible vid clips of some the mods to help get yours right let me know and I will cut a few. No after market support on these makes these a pain to build up.

      @@BentonL The Liberty is the only Jeep left in my garage. I'm fortunate enough to have the space, so its been stored inside. She'll get fixed one of these days. I plan on going back to stock suspension and let her live the rest of her life in peace. She's a little old and getting tired, over 250K. Plenty of hilly dirt roads where I'm at, kind of like trails for senior citizen/retired Jeeps.

    Thank you for this video! I noticed this exact sound from my Liberty not just from take off, but when I shift from first to second, it's a manual. I do not drive it often as my daughter has it at college. I recently had the rear lower control arms replaced free of charge courtesy of a recall. The new ones are three times the size of the originals. This helped, but today I was looking for the source of the sound and saw the ball joint and noticed it was ruined. Hey, I have a 2004 liberty and exactly at 50 mph, I can feel like rear tires bouncing. I replaced shock absorbers, bushings were replaced, tires balanced, and problem still was there. Then I had the idea to put a camera under the chasis, and I could see that the sway bar is the problem. It is properly installed, all bolts tight and in place, so I dont know what is causing this. I know this part is there for a reason, and I read in a Jeep forum that some people just get rid of it for different reasons. Is there a way to secure the sway bar so it doesn bounce? I'll post the video if asked.What do you think about the idea of remove it?

    • @RockyXTV

      Removing it would make the rear even more unstable, less bouncy? Maybe, better offroad? Yes, but definitely unstable on the road. I'm not sure why it would be bouncing around. Sorry to say it's one of those things that I would have to see.

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  6 років тому

      Yes you can, most auto parts stores have or can get just the ball joint and bushings. The only issue I found with this is you still have to remove the control arm, and if you don't have your own press you will have to have someone press out the old and press in the new. This more often then not ends up taking more time and costing more money then just changing the entire assembly. That's just my 2 cents though, thanks for watching!

    First off, thank you for posting this. I need to do this exact thing on my daughter's Jeep. Second, I followed your link to your Amazon page to the part, & it's listed for $69.25 w/ free shipping. When I look at Napa online it's $221.99. That's a concerning difference. Opinion?

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  5 років тому

      There is definitely a big price difference, it usually goes dealership, premium auto parts store, auto parts store then online aftermarket dealer in order of pricing. This part is around $160 at AutoZone and over $300 for OEM and in between at NAPA. The quality will vary between some brands, but a lot of places sell the exact same brand for a wide difference in price. I would say the NAPA part will be a little better quality and most likely a Lifetime warranty, the one on Amazon has held up thus far (about 15K miles) and has a 5 year warranty. I've also seen this exact part and brand I linked being sold with a 10 year warranty. I would say it all comes down to your budget and or what you want to spend, sure one could have a lifetime warranty, but is it worth the extra cost, are you going to have the vehicle that long? I hope that gives you a little information for thought. Thanks for watching!

I put the nut back on and push it out with a piece of 1/2 inch black pipe about 40 inches long, lined it up with the axle through through driver's side spring. When the nut bottomed out I used a piece of 3/8 threaded rod about 40 inches long to push the bolt out. Also I left the chisel in when pulling down the ball joint to axle. I wish my new one would slide into place as easily as yours did with the ratchet strap. I've got it about halfway in and it won't go any further. my ratchet straps are not strong enough I guess. I even tried putting a block of wood above it and jacking up the diff until the entire weight of the truck was on it and it still won't go in all the way. Not sure what to do now.

    • @RockyXTV
      @RockyXTV  6 років тому

      You could try backing the 2 control arm bolts out a little, that will let the arm flex more.

    • @milkytech2466
      @milkytech2466 6 років тому +1

      I got it. I ended up removing the entire pinch bracket from the diff and slipped it onto the ball-joint shaft outside of the car and it went on super easy and loose. Turns out I had the pinch spread plenty, but the shaft of the ball-joint wasn't at the perfect angle and the beveled tip of the shaft was catching at the bottom of the pinch bolt slot. Unbelievably this replacement didn't fix my "rear steer" issue when getting on and off the throttle. Now I have to replace the lower control arms for the second time! When I replaced them the first time the rear steer went away for only around 20k miles and so I assumed the upper was bad also but it turns out the bushings in the lowers just wore out quickly. Hopefully the new style lowers last longer. Your video was a great help though. Thank you.
