Costco Tire Policy: You Are Forewarned

  • According to the Internet, "experts" have reversed 50 years of logic & common sense to accommodate the poor driving habits of today's driver. Few drivers slow down under "adverse driving conditions"; they believe that their "magnetic tires" will grip a wet road just as well as a dry road. Costco operates under their beliefs; while the service desk takes your order for 2 tires to go on the FRONT axle, the shop refuses to do that and mounts your 2 new tires on the REAR. The "experts" dealt with frequency of occurrence; it rains somewhere everyday and numerous drivers are in wrecks because they refuse to recognize "adverse driving conditions" and slow down. Blowouts occur, but are far less frequent. So, 50 years of logic and common sense are discarded; I had little difficulty when I had my only blowout because the new tires were on the FRONT, so it was the left rear that blew. The owner of the vehicle that I took to Costco for 2 tires was not as lucky as I when he had his only blowout in his life; he blew the left front tire and had severe difficulty in getting to the shoulder. Costco has good prices, but their service desk should make it known to the customer, at the time of purchase, that the 2 new tires will NOT be installed on the front axle. Had I known what they would/would not do, I would have jacked the vehicle up in their parking lot and brought them the tires one at a time; doing so would have saved me quadruple the work later!
    FOOTNOTE: Black tire thread marks are showing up on concrete driveways in increasing frequency. An Internet search claims that this is occurring because new tires are being manufactured using softer polymer compounds and is more frequent in the higher priced tires. If you can "see" tire marks in your driveway, the tire is losing rubber, and deteriorating right before your eyes. One Internet source reports that "sealing" your driveway MAY reduce, or eliminate, this eyesore. The top brand tires used to have an 85,000 mile warranty, yes? I think the new tires of today are 65,000 mile warranty? Designed to wear out faster, you will be back sooner, to shell out more $$$. There is no such thing as a 20 year fridge, anymore; you're lucky to get 10 years from the new ones. It's called "planned obsolescence"...

    Its almost summer. By the time the rain comes the new tires will be older. Why cant they just put them in the front. The dont becouse they cant. I want new tire in the front becouse i dont want a blow out in the front. If it happens in the rear i will be better able to control the vehicle. With big rigs the new tires have to go in the front. Same concept. Its is a pain but you just need to pay some other person to move them to the front or do it yourselve. The sell great tires. The sell fresh tires. Last time i had to get new tires i went to a cheep tire store. They gave me two old tires and sold them to me as new. They looked knew. But they were 2 years old. Lesson learned. I only buy my new tire at Costco now. Then i pay so they can be moved to the front.

    "Experts" find that if you put the new tires on the rear you sell more tires

  • @DMaui-mq8qm

    Let's examine my research... My generation (60's) is accustomed to putting 2 new tires on the FRONT axle since those tires wear down faster due to engine weight, the fact that there is ALWAYS a driver on board, & the fact that the front axle is doing the steering AND drive of the vehicle... My second source, in his upper 30's, was also dumbfounded with Costco, who failed to state, in advance, that they would NOT install the tires as requested. Then, the young clerk at Goodyear Tires, was in her mid-20's and she stated Goodyear's policy of recommending to follow the "experts" would be explained to customers but SHE would put 2 new tires on the FRONT of her vehicle as well. That is 3 different generations who object to the "experts" who favored the rear tire installation because it rains every day somewhere with NO consideration for blowouts. You can follow the advice of the "experts" (such as our leaders); the rest of us will use common sense, logic, & established, proven past practice...

      @jay__chugh 2 роки тому +2

      First off just because you and a few buds from different generations agreed with you doesn’t mean that’s 3 generations on board with you. Your statement about front tires wearing is correct, but that doesn’t mean you put new tires in the front. The reason we put new tires in the back is because the back provides stability. With worn tires you can fish tail and just straight up slide. Your front tires get worn on the sides and rear tires get worn down the middle. If you keep your rear tires on instead of moving them will you be okay… yes for the time being, but why unnecessary wear your new front tires more and sacrifice stability faster when you can have the best of both worlds. Just cuz you used to do something and it worked doesn’t mean it’s advisable nowadays. Take your business elsewhere if you’re gonna complain about someone helping you.

    • @bobbyc1849
      @bobbyc1849 2 роки тому

      You are better off replace all 4 tires at the same time and rotate the tires every year. Costco will do this for free. If all 4 tires are not in the same condition, you are asking for trouble.

    The rear end is the lightest part of the vehicle and the most vulnerable part of the vehicle, that’s why cops do the pit.
    Costco adheres to the highest standard in the industry from the tia and the men and women involved in that association have been in the tire industry for decades.

    front wheel drive cars wear front tires faster. most cars today use front wheel drive. with the policy costco has you can never wear your tires evenly because your best tires will always be in the back. costco is scamming everyone. think of the cars at a race track, rear tire smoking,rear wheel drive...what ever wheel the power is applied to wears the fastest.

    • @DMaui-mq8qm
      @DMaui-mq8qm  3 роки тому

      Yes, Leta, they WANT you to buy 4 at a time but they can't "force" you. We dispose of working cell phones just to have the newest model, and many other items are filling our dump sites before their useful time is reached. New tires, especially the higher $$$, are being made with a softer polymer compound; the warranty is 20,000 miles less, AND they are leaving black rubber tread marks in cement driveways nationwide. Again, pay more; get less... Thanks for your input. D.

      I just got a quote for $468 for four tires from costco. This price includes a 110 discount for buying a set of 4. If i get 2 at costco it would cost 289. For this price its a no brainer to get all 4. Yes i have 2 tires that have decent tread on them but this is because I choose to not rotate my tires regularly. I also am electing to keep 1 of the good tires to put on my spare tire as that one is pretty old.
