We are going to pivot away from High Voltage on the next episode, even though technically it’s their third album after two AUS only releases, most of the world sees it as a debut. Let There Be Rock will be the choice…as Dirty Deeds was their second international release, though not for the US.

i been pondering about this for 10mins now as you came you mention High Voltage as AC/DC's 3rd album, at first i obviously thought you misspoke, but then i though, now has he REALLY gone to the length's of MIXING the Australian H.V. and T.N.T albums and to THEN enter the WW release of High Voltage which WOULD be a first EVER, which also would be an interpretation of in this case AC/DC's discography, which is a BIT eclectic to put it in a polite way as High Voltage IS and WILL always be AC/DC's debut album, now you could've gone by the Australian route, were Dirty Deeds.. is their 3rd, or more conventionally by counting as one would; Let There Be Rock, as the WW of High Voltage is basically the WW release/version of T.N.T. with some tracks changed out, with the remainder of the tracks off of the Australian version of High Voltage along with Jailbreak off of the Australian Dirty Deeds... were released as the '74 Jailbreak Mini-LP, but i know that others have as i can tell have mentioned this and even the best can mix things up or get too nerdy, and this comes from a rather nerdy music nerd, though and i do mean this in a positive way, i think certain members of your different shows are way more nerdy than i am, as i am a detail freak, but i've never gotten annoyed about a not so cool font used on the upper right side on the back cover of any albums, this example wasn't spot on and i won't mention any names, but i've been amused by how some of the things that some of your guys can get annoyed by things of that nature, as a very close friend/music expert, famous musician who's as critical as me, and as open minded/having a very eclectic taste in music, but in my case i'm also a purist in cases when this is "needed", and i agree, although i love my cover artworks just as any other music fan, and in the world of metal there's a lot of cool artwork, but that can be said about most genre's or all, and that is that, for a 100% chance of non bias; all music should be released in white sleeves of with blank cover as in no artwork, just the name, title, tracklist and maybe some other small info, and he's got a got point, just on as a side note to this, but yet again a great episode Pete 🙂and i tough one, on the top off my head i think i'd go for, as in this episode; 4. Led Zep.; II, 3. Sabbath; Paranoid, 2.. Priest; Sad Wings..., 1. 'Head; Overkill, having said that, the top 3 could change tomorrow when it comes to the ranking order, it's almost impossible; why i DO NOT like making lists like this hehe, but maximum cred to you guys for having that disiplin 🙂 keep up the good work as always Pete and all you Hudon's and the rest of the S.O.T posse, much love from Norway 🙂

    1. Led Zep II - this album had such a profound impact on how I listen to music and what I listen to; it was a Christmas present in 1978, I was 14 years old and had never heard anything like Whole Lotta Love before. It has to be #1 on my list.
    2. Black Sabbath - Paranoid; 4 years later I attended my first concert and it was Sabbath on the Mob Rules tour. Over time Paranoid became one of my go to Sabbath albums along with the debut and Master of Reality.
    3. Motorhead - Overkill
    4. Judas Priest - Sad Wings
Less familiar with those two, as a big Hawkwind fan, Lemmy gets the nod.

What a show! I really enjoyed the stories about how you all discovered Paranoid. Emotional and awesome. I've said my story here before, I'm 59 and when I was 10, my cousin Donna and her boyfriend Joe were babysitting me and Donna asked if I would like to go to a record store. That record is famous here in Chicago and is still going strong. It is Rolling Stone records. We get there and as a 10 year old I was mesmerized by all the cool album covers. So Donna tells me to pick out 3 albums and her and her boyfriend are buying them for me. Well, she helped me picked them and they were Machine Head, Lucifer's Friend and Paranoid. Love them all to this day but Paranoid was the one that also changed my life as Rob said. At 10 years old and hearing that intro to War Pigs for the first time on my parents massive floor model stereo, I was instantly converted from a GI Joe, toy collecting little dude, to a full blown headbanger. So thank you Donna and Joe for taking me to the Rolling Stone that day in 1974. I can never, ever pay you back for the joy and love of metal that you gave me that day. 🤘

    1. LZ II. I'm with Karen in that I can't listen to it any more since it's so overplayed. But it's still an epic album and was the most important album of the 4 in my musical development.
    2. Paranoid. Behind Zeppelin by the narrowest of margins.
    3. Sad Wings. Not far behind Sabbath.
    4. Overkill. I like Motorhead....a lot. But I love the other 3, so this was really the only place I could put this album.

    1. Black Sabbath - Paranoid - Not much more needs to be said on this album. Had the songs on other albums. Bought this album much later. Iconic Album IMO.
    2. Led Zeppelin II - I have more of a history with this than Judas Priest - Changed my pick as I was writing.
    3. Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny - I heard the 80's Priest first and then went back. However I heard Unleashed in the East and Thinking these studio songs could not be duplicated to the Live songs.
    4. Motorhead - Overkill - I do not have a history with this album. Good album though.

I feel like these are tougher to rank in theory than they are in practice. At least for me it was pretty easy to rank these. Here’s my list:
    4. Overkill - Motörhead
Never been a big Motörhead fan. Their sound is generally more abrasive and forced than I tend to enjoy, and it limits replayability for me. Not a bad album, but easily my least favorite of this set of albums.
    3. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
I love this album a lot. It was my favorite Sabbath album for most of my life before I got into stuff beyond their first 5 albums. “War Pigs,” “Hand of Doom,” and “Fairies Wear Boots” are all still top 15 Ozzy songs for me. But now I’m burnt out on the title track and Iron Man after hearing them so much on the radio and in movies, so that slightly brings the album down for me and drops it to my third favorite in this list.
    2. Sad Wings of Destiny - Judas Priest
The first great JP album with Halford’s soaring vocals, great heavy riffs, fantastic solos, and overall one of my favorite structures to an album ever produced. (Dreamer Deceiver into Deceiver, Prelude into Tyrant, and Epitaph into Island of Domination). I’ve been listening to this one a lot lately and it’s incredible that I haven’t gotten tired of it. It’s not my favorite JP album-maybe not even in my top 3-but that just goes to show how great they were at their peak.
    1. Led Zeppelin II
Possibly my favorite studio album of all time. Whole Lotta Love was the song that opened my brain up to what could be done with music (the psychedelic section in the middle blew my mind when I first heard it). And the rest of the album just didn’t let up. It was a barrage of cool guitar work, insanely technical and precise bass lines for 1969, spot-on drumming, and of course killer vocals at a time when I believe Robert Plant was the greatest vocalist on the scene. I can’t praise LZII enough for what it did for my musical journey or what it did for the Blues/Hard Rock scene in the early 70s. Easily my number 1 here.

    3. Motorhead- Overkill (this would be 1 if not for I Won't Pay Your Price and Metropolis. I really hate the latter).
    2. Led Zeppelin- II (Zeppelin do sound louder and heavier in 69 than Sabbath did a year later, but they lose points for the stolen blues lyrics)

Of the four albums selected for this episode, Led Zeppelin II is my favorite, and it was not a difficult choice in the least. Having said that, the burnout factor does come into play, and as such, I don't listen to this nearly as often as I used to. Still, I can say it is easily my favorite out of all these albums with a clear conscience.
Sabbath's Paranoid comes in second, though it has never been one of my favorites; it was the first Sabbath album I ever bought, and, of course, I like it. However, once I got around to owning the other five from the ones comprising the first six, I found myself returning to Paranoid less and less as the years went on.
Priest's Sad Wings of Destiny is my third. I do like "Epitaph," but since Queen came up (and if I'm being honest), I never thought it was quite on the level of a Freddie Mercury tune. I should also mention that I am with Nick, in that I probably favor '80s Priest over '70s Priest.
Like one commenter below, Motorhead is a band that has never moved me enough to really care. For context, if in the company of friends playing an album from them (which has actually happened on more than one occasion), I would be fine listening to it. But afterwards, would I feel compelled to go and listen to them on my own time? Not really. Overkill is my #4.
    Great show.

    3. Overkill
    4. LZ II
I’m probably about a decade younger than anyone on this panel but Paranoid was also my gateway into metal as a young teen and an absolutely life-changing album for me! It was close between #2 and 3 as I’ve been into Priest longer than Motörhead but been really loving both recently. Zeppelin has never been one of my favourite bands, I do like them a lot but that album is one I haven’t gone back to for a while. I should probably do that soon!
    Cheers 🤘🤘

Maybe because I'm into Punk more than Metal, my number one would have to be Overkill. Motorhead was the metal band Punks could like without criticism. Sad Wings of Destiny is number 2. I can't decide between Zeppelin II or Paranoid. Too much radio play did them in and Paranoid is my third favorite album by Sabbath. I know it's alot of people's favorite, but the next 2 albums are what I prefer.

I just learned one of my favorite music sites, Raven Sings the Blues, curated a cool fest called Deep in the Valley at From the Ground Brewery in Red Hook, catered by Gracie's back in August. Great lineup of Ryley Walker, 75 Dollar Bill, Garcia Peoples, Sunwatchers and more. I think some of the SoT folks would like some of the jam and fusion friendly Cosmic Americana. Hope they do it again next year!

I listed them in order of badassness:
    1. BS - Paranoid
    2. JP - Sad Wings
    3. M - Overkill
    4. LZ - IÌ
LZ isn't something I turn to when I wanna rock hard. M is primarily an appetizer. JP def scratches the rock hard itch, but BS not only scratches the itch, it also adds the necessary groove and fuzz.

Those other 3 albums don’t even begin to hold a candle to Led Zeppelin II. It’s not my favorite (that’s Houses…), and it’s not their best-recorded (that’s Graffitti)…but it’s the one I listen to the most! “Ramble On” is one of the greatest rock songs of all time and their best song ever. I’m stunned by this episode of SOT.

Two of the songs on Paranoid, Iron Man & Electric Funeral, have the whole band (pretty much) playing the same thing. Even Ozzy is singing the same melody over the gtr riff. It's actually quite childish.

These four albums are legendary. As I teenager and young adult, I was discovering these albums throughout the 90's, and each one blew my mind when I first heard them.
    4. Led Zeppelin II. This album is chock full of radio standards. And maybe the whole overplayed factor is what puts this at number 4. Also, I'm not sure a long drum solo needed to be on a studio album, but it's still pretty cool.
    3. Motorhead - Overkill. Maybe my favorite Motorhead album. It's only number 3 because numbers 1 and 2 are those albums. I probably need to listen to this more.
2, Black Sabbath - Paranoid. Perfect album. The radio songs are a bit overplayed, but they are absolute metal hymns. This album has some of the most iconic metal guitar riffs of all time. Side two is also totally crushing.
    1. Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny. On this album, Judas Priest found their sound, and it was good. But there is also a lot of experimentation here that they lost a bit on later album. It's another perfect album that I still love to listen to from front to back. Even "Epitaph."

Topic suggestion: what Classic Rock Radio SHOULD be playing.
We all know classic rock tends to play the exact same handful of songs for each artist considered classic rock. The idea here then isn't just to think about deep cuts that we really like but rather songs that would work really well as radio hits but just get completely ignored by Classic Rock Radio. A perfect example for me would be a song like Touch Too Much by AC/DC. As catchy as anything they ever did but radio completely ignores it.

Hi all. Love the channel to death.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. There’s a ‘LZ II’ matchbox van. We don’t just get to see one but two of you have them. WTF? Prior to today, I would have classed them as mythical, like Nick Cave dolls, Joy Division oven gloves, Motley Crue respecting women.
Craig; your t-shirt design looks very familiar to me. Please put me out of my misery and remind me what it is. Thanks.

    4) JP - Sad Wings of Destiny. With all due respect, I'm sorry but this album didn't have a impact on me.
    3) LZ - II. As has been mentioned, I too have "classic rock burn out" on this album. Still a fantastic record.
    2) Motorhead - Overkill. It pains me, as Motorhead is & has been an essential band for me but....
    1) BS - Paranoid. Everyone has already said it, but this is a classic for a reason. I've heard "War Pigs" so many times & it still moves me. It's #1 but it's so close to #2.
