I hope it carries on until you can match up a killer album like Strange Highways, for example, with other albums that are the 6th, 7th , or wherever Dio , Maiden, etc may have been after their popularity seemed to wane. There is some gold in them hills

Notice how Karen went from “I didn’t bother to listen. I’m a Yankee through and through” nonsense to “I tried”.. when Ralph talked common sense and made her look foolish about nit giving the albums a listen and thus, an honest, researched rating .. She has zero credibility moving forward, no different than Rolling Stone giving an album a shitty review that they never listened to in the first place ..

Finally, a chance last night to watch this episode and it will be known for a lot of the discussions but, for me, it will always be hilariously epic for Ryan and Butch's takes on Steve Keeler's picks. Enjoyed all the guest star appearances in this episode. Have been watching SoT for four years which includes the start and growth of HVS. There may be funnier but this one ranks in the top for that reason. Then special kudos to Jack Toledano for asking Karen the question about the song Mr. Speed which generated a lot of interesting discussion on the lyrics of songs and asking for a woman's perspective on some song lyrics. Thanks to everyone for taking time to appear on the show and also to those who sent the rankings on to be presented by others.

Hi Pete, Leon. Hope Bryce is alright, I checked out Skull Fist due to his recommendation when they came through my town last year. They were supported by a Swedish band called Screamer, both bands played great sets and I had a cracking night!
I imagine yt can be quite stressful, particularly if you get negativity from commenters. I know Niamh took quite a lot long time from it but she seems to be back now.
Anyway Pete it was a really entertaining show but on the thread of negativity I don't like this flack Karen is taking in the comments here. Maybe there can be room for light-hearted banter, like we have amongst the panellists)) but some of what's been written isn't particularly nice.
You may have seen some already but I thought I'd point it out as I know you don't like it when that sort of stuff goes on. For what it's worth I think Karen is very witty, knowledgeable and engaging and a great addition to the channel!
Anyway Pete, thanks for your great work and I'm looking forward to the Saxon review tomorrow. I haven't listened to the whole record yet but from what I've heard so far, it's a winner!

Hate to comment before I see the show (work schedule is off now that HVS took the week off). But it’s an easy ranking . All of these came out during my 72 Seasons, middle school years. I think Fighting came first.
    4) Rock N Roll Over - saw KISS twice in ‘76, the second time right after this was released, in Columbus, GA. Crazy about it at the time. Didn’t age well
    3) Fighting - never saw Thin Lizzy live regrettably, but a huge fan. This album too.
    2) Street Survivors - Skynyrd previewed this when I saw them May ‘77. Ronnie said the two songs they played were from the upcoming album, For Street People Only. What an amazing performance. What’s Your Name and That Smell in the set. Steve Gaines was about to send them to huge heights.
    1) Spectres - Tons of BOC memories growing up. Spectres was huge. In attendance, again in Columbus, GA, when they recorded ETI and Astronomy for Some Enchanted Evening.

Great show, but as far as the King’s Vengeance mistake, I’ve got several reissues from various bands with that kind of stuff all over. Hell, the rock candy release of REO Speedwagon’s Wheels Are Turnin’ calls the same song 3 different things on the cover alone. Hype sticker says One Night Alone, actual track listing calls it correctly as One Lonely Night, and the blurb on the back calls it One Lonely Knight! 😂

I remember the hype being RARO was recorded in a theater.. and I agree with Karen overall about RARO.. I was starting to check out on Kiss by RARO
Also as Grant said ... The murky mix works for Hotter Than Hell..It fits the mood of the songs.
It sounds slowed down in spots... Strange Ways couldn't sound any better.

I was happy to see Rick, Martin, and Jack as well. My favorite part of the episode, however, was hearing Butch and Ryan read Steve Keeler's picks while doing hilarious and over-the-top impressions of him. I'm not a Kiss fan, but I'll defend them by saying they never took themselves too seriously and they knew they weren't songwriting geniuses. Wonderful challenge. Great to see my fellow Contrarians Grant and Martin!
    4. "Fighting" - Thin Lizzy - This was important from a transition standpoint. There are elements of what would become THE Thin Lizzy sound with the release of "Jailbreak". It's an improvement over "NIghtlife" but still needed to "bake" in the rock and roll oven just a touch longer. But it's getting closer! And I LOVE Rosile!! HAIL MIDWEST ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    3. "Street Survivors" - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Tremendous album. They set the standard for how to record three guitarists (Something Maiden STILL hasn't learned). Great songs throughout and really exploded live. Amazing sounding album and especially the drums of Artimus Pyle. He is horribly underappreciated and needs way more love for his contributions! Oh, what could have been. Such a horrible story!
    2. "Spectres" - Blue Oyster Cult - I love this album! So much great material and by this point, they were untouchable live!!! Just amazing! "Godzilla" - catchy, fun and always worth a listen!!
"The Golden Age of Leather" - LOVE this song. When I saw BOC at the Decatur, IL Civic Center March 1, 1983..I heard this track live for the first time!! I FREAKED OUT!! They are playing "Golden Age of Leather!!". Later it would become the 5 guitars jam they would do before "Born to Be Wild". The rest of the album is so eclectic and wonderful!!! The last great complete album until "Cultosaurus" Would have been number 1...except...
    1. "Rock and Roll Over" - Kiss - This is my favorite Kiss studio album! I saw this tour (with Backstage Passes) and the tracks from this were KILLER! This is stripped down, raw and fun! "Makin' Love", "Take Me", "I Want You", "Baby Driver" amazing!!! I wish they had released Alive II (already recorded) on this tour! (Go listen to "Lost Alive II)...

agree 100% on your opinion on "Lost Alive II." Although as a HUGE Kiss fan at the time, I loved "Alive II"...in hindsight, I would've omitted a few songs, added a few songs, and put side 4 on "Dynasty."

I agree with Butch that not every lyricist in rock needs to be Dylan. We needed Gene, Paul and DLR to balance out the rest. Sometimes you want to just rock.

    1. ROCK AND ROLL OVER - Kiss (1976)
    2. SPECTRES - Blue Oyster Cult (1977)
    3. FIGHTING - Thin Lizzy (1975)
    4. STREET SURVIVORS - Lynyrd Skynyrd (1977)
    * There are "0" duds or stupid songs on "Rock n Roll Over"! This album ROCKS from start to finish! And the musicianship is top notch! See how many guitarists can play the "Makin Love" solo correctly and with as much feel! And "Mr. Speed" is a killer! Badass track with a great lyric, more like the witty, cool lyrics of first 3 albums (which i do like best)
"Spectres" is a Top 3 BOC album. Contains several fantastic, underrated tracks. Although I can't believe Karen loves Godzilla, and only calls sexual theme songs "stupid" I am with her about the superior early KISS lyrics though.
Thin Lizzy's "Fighting" is also a great album! Maybe not their finest, but a Top 3 or 4.
"That Smell" is not only the best song on SS, but possibly the best, "most groovy" song from the band.
Hey, Martin! I loved all of those bands. All brilliant. BUT i never thought less of KISS in comparison. Ever! Kiss was bloody fantastic! Just...stop it with the kiss-dissing. You are absolutely WRONG!
Joe Perry couldn't play Ace Frehley solos! Whitford could, but not sloppy Joe.
And btw, Kiss was a very special act in the 1970s which featured a powerful and mysterious image. If you're "The Demon, Space Ace, Starchild or the Wildcat," you're not going to write songs about your dopey job or some girl who makes you cry. Gimmie a break.

Totally agree with Karen! Huge Kiss fan here but RARO is overrated; people like the cover, the era, the production... but some of the songs are weak, filler. Dressed to Kill all day long for substance and power, moxy. But to each their own.
Btw no one should have to justify their tastes to anyone else, happens a little too often on these panels but love the show/format anyway.

Dressed To Kill is my close 2nd favorite studio album from them...gotta remember what Kiss and Casablanca were going through in those days...ie: bankrupcy and drug addiction from the majority of the owners and managers...and staff...Kiss didn't have time to sit and write "classics"...they were trying to save themselves financially, as well as the record label...remember...their tours were financed by Bill Aucoin's American Express card for YEARS...live tours make some money, but album sales make MORE...Kiss was not a big album selling band, except for "Alive!"...it was different back in the 70s

Street Survivors- Lynyrd were at they're peak. One From the Road was the biggest live record of '77. 1. ROCK 'n ROLL OVER (Beethoven). The 76' R&R over tour was the first concert I ever went to at the Nassau Coliseum. Couldn't believe how Paul Stanley could dance and prance all over the stage on those giant high heels. And yes, the second song was TAKE ME.

Calling Kiss’ songwriting lazy and then admitting to not have listened to the entire Skynyrd album, SMH. So no one else on the panel is busy? Step it up for Pete and the channel. I guess you don’t like AC/DC and VH then if the lyrics are too simple and juvenile. 🙄. Nonetheless, entertaining show folks. The Steve Keeler impressions made my Monday night😂. 🤘

Agreed. You don't get a 50 year career with over 100 million albums sold with lazy songwriting. It may not be your cup of tea, and fine to dislike something personally, but the songs connected with millions for decades after decade. Undeniably successful songwriting.

Major Kiss fan here, but I agree with Karen ...... and yet I disagree with Martin.
I think that Kiss are often lazy, but I can't agree that Aerosmith or Nugent are any more sophisticated (and I like those guys too).
When Ralph puts Kiss alongside AC/DC and Van Halen I agree, but I also think of Kiss as deliberately dumb like Ramones or Dictators..... they're like a band of punks that also have elements of RnB etc.
By the way Paul was 24 when Rock and Roll Over was recorded so not exactly a kid but certainly an underdeveloped ManBoy.

  • @patrickmurphy4297

...this collection of albums, for my ranking, is solely based on what I'd heard first...except for BOC...so, my #4 is Lynyrd Skynyrd...good album, just not above my opinions of the other 3...#3 is Thin Lizzy...the first album I got from them was Johnny The Fox (still my favorite), and, unfairly or not, I based all my opinions on subsequent purchases on whether one album was "better" than the other one..."Fighting" didn't even come close, although "The Freedom Song," like so many participants on this episode stated, is a hands-down classic. My #2 is BOC...it was the first album I'd heard from them...I'd read so many things about this band up until that time, but what I read did not match up to what I was hearing on this one...to this day, I can live without hearing Godzilla again EVER....I like the melodic stuff on this. But I was expecting this metallic explosion, and didn't get it...until I went backwards into their recorded work and said..."ok...NOW I get why people were espousing such great things about this band..."...my #1 is Kiss...too many personal reasons to mention, but here's a few...first, this is my favorite studio Kiss record...it was the 2nd Kiss 8-track I owned (yes, 8-track)...my dad bought it for my brother and I in November of '76 for some reason...can't remember why. All I had before that was "Alive!" on 8-track...I loved each and every song (I was 12 when this came out...)...I still play it a lot today...the only song I have "issues" with these days is "See You In Your Dreams"...everything else is mid-70's mindless hard rock...just what a 12-year old fell in love with, and still resonates to this day. Paul once said Kiss means "Keep It Simple, Stupid"...that's what they did. And it worked on this album in spades. Great decision to bring in Eddie Kramer to produce it...and to answer a question, yes...they recorded it in the Star Theater in Nanuet, New York...and, not to knock Karen, but she obviously doesn't know...this band at the time was being put under pressure to get a "hit"...they didn't have time to take a year off to write "less than stupid" lyrics...they were recording 2 albums per year to keep the record company going...and their fan base was quite young at the time. So, give 'em what they want, and hope for the best.

Hi all. Love the channel to death.
Thoroughly entertaining episode this week. Great line-up. Great to see Martin & Grant back on HVS, but Karen steals the show.
Back in the late 70s, over here across the pond, it was beyond rare to hear Skynyrd or Kiss on the radio - pretty much impossible during the daytime. Not being strangers to the top40, Thin Lizzy used to get played quite a bit though. Swings and roundabouts.
No one wants to read in the comments old gits banging on about the war and how much you could get for 50c/50p and still have change but, depressingly, I have clothes older than Ryan. I think the last time I saw Kiss live, Ryan would have been one or two years old.
Just a quickie re: Kiss lyrics in general. If a known male artist approaching 30 came out with something like ‘Christine Sixteen’ today, at the very least career ending and they’d probably be put on some sort of register.
    Without over thinking it and without any re-listening;
    1. BOC
    2. Thin Lizzy
    3. Kiss
    4. Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Did I ever tell you about that time during the war when zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Ralf made good points. I only rate the albums if I know them. This week I'm not rating them because 2 of the albums I don't know, never heard & have no interest to hear. I'm not on the show so I have no responsibility to listen to anything recommended. I have to say, though, that some of the arguments for the Kiss album almost made me want to check it out, although I'm one who doesn't take the group seriously, views them as just kid stuff. I won't because I'm too busy listening to music I'm into. I doubt I would like the Kiss album, but as Ralf said listening to it might make my position for not liking it stronger.
