    In 1973 I bought my grandfather’s ‘58 beetle for $100.00. It had a 36 hp engine and little taillights, and I still have the four pronged emblem from the hood. But you are wrong, you’re not missing a passenger visor. It never had one. My car, like yours ONLY had a drivers side visor from the factory because I noticed at the time when I was driving it.

    It's beautiful,man! I had a 66 (?) back in '83, which my brother gave me (sold it to me for a dollar for tax purposes). This was in San Francisco, where the fog eats cars like hamburger, so it was all rusted plus it had the typical bend in the trunk lid where it had been hit. There was a wire clothes hanger holding the trunk closed. Tires were almost smooth and the headliner (cloth) was always dropping dust on me, so I removed it. Had the original fabric seats that looked like mattress ticking, very comfortable, as is the case in bugs. Drove very well and was quick and had no trouble at all negotiating the steep hills of SF. I moved to Los Angeles, packing all my stuff into the car, up to the ceiling, so I couldnt see out the back window, plus had the passenger side mirror missing, so I couldnt see out that side. Drove all the way to LA without a problem. To switch lanes to the right, I'd just move over slowly and listen for horns. If nobody coming just slid over to the right. I got some funny looks from some drivers, who saw the long haired hippy with the banged up rusted bug packed full of stuff. Only place I had to pull over to the right lane with the big trucks was at a point where the altitude was about 1200 feet, so the bug didnt have the power to race up the hill. I was with the heavy trucks, doing about 20 mph. I got to LA without any trouble at all. Got me around quick and smooth and at one point I drove without brakes, because I couldnt afford to replace them. So for a couple of months i drove using the hand brake to stop. No problem even in the freeways. Finally got brakes and a new steering box. Eventually sold it to go back to New York. The kid who bought it for $300 was giddy with excitement over the car. His girlfriend who was with him must have thought he was nuts! Loved that car and still miss it. So i understand you being in love with this blue beauty. And it started after 40 years! Thats bugs for you.Enjoy it!

    Climb that mountain! Step by step, make it like it just left the Factory in Germany. A work of art, the first real Porsche Creation, and an icon which was made with pride. If you do this, the car will last you a whole lifetime, and that will be your reward for all of the effort. I took a year out of my life, restoring a '71. That was 15 years ago now.They become a part of you, and very creepily enter your life! Greetings from Australia.

    Forgot Id seen this a couple years ago. I laughed when you cranked it and it started. Reminded me of the Woody Allen movie Sleeper. He wakes up after bein stored cryogenically for 200 years. At one point in the movie he's running from the government and he runs into a cave, where theres an old 60s bug. He looks in it and the keys are in there so he tries it and it starts right up ! It was a joke about how dependable VWs were .

Just leave it out in the woods to become a deposit for acorns and pine cones. But not anymore! Well Jason it’s going to snow up to a foot on Thursday! My Dad bought one off an old workmate in 1984 & it was the same vintage (1950's) as that one,my mother towed it home while he was steering it
    He converted into a Baja type with the big rear wheels & fibreglass wheel guards, he converted it to run a 12 volt charging system (alternator) & ran the speedometer lights, etc through a wiper motor resistor to drop the voltage down to 6 volts, he did manage to use the 6 volt starter motor but.
    He was forever swapping the motors around because I think that it was a 1.1 litre engine but he eventually bolted a 1.2 litre engine into it.
    He sold it a few years later because he couldn't afford the registration for both cars,the new owner fixed it up well because he had more access to the Volkswagen Beetle parts.
    Note his was right hand drive being an Australian delivered model !

    Hey, I like restoring trucks, in my case, and bringing them back to life. Even as rare as this is, I am not man enough to tackle any restoration this far gone. Good on ya if you do. It would be interesting to see progress reports for sure!
    One thing I can say, when you are done, that car will weigh twice as much, or more, than it does today! Haha. If ya stood on the rocker at the end there, you would have two halves to weld back together! Like I say, big project, I am very impressed that it is one you would tackle! I mean that in a good way! sometimes when you see a different color under the original paint here's what might have happened. They painted the fenders and sometimes they had flaws(runs) and would be sent back. they would sand that first color to prep it and then spray over it in whatever other color they were doing that day.

    Awesome! Frame/floorpan, check the rust, weld on new suspension etc, off ya go! Excellent patina, but also a worthy of restore project, looking forward to see what you do with this gem-in-the-rough.
    Where I grew up there were a few of these around, haven't seen one in 30+ years now, though I don't do many car shows. It was not unusual to see people standing up through the roof waving at folks and having fun, good memories!
    My choice, had I this, would be to stabilize the body w/o hurting it's state, put on a frame/pan that rocks, 1600cc+ and a dune buggy suspension, comphy buckets and interior, working roof etc., and make it a sort of utilitarian/everyday/rat-rod-ish sleeper :)
    Good luck man, cheers from the PNW Canada!

    The bracket on the steering column is most likely for a flashlight. Popular 50's 60's accessory.
    That car is too far gone in my opinion, my focus would be on your oval window.
    But another one saved isn't a bad thing.
    I've mention in a comment before, I can't believe how bad the rust is on cars there.

    It's got it's moments there's the why cut the channel there moment, you don't have to unbolt the pan that much moment which is a plus zone!! Converting to 12 volt looks easier moment the engine does sound watery in oil have seen them come in running fuzes rings to piston forget rod bearing because someone thought they are water cooled anyway it's a good fixer upper!!, I think you did good nice car!!!; )

    I reckon it's Fjord blue, not Capri, which was darker, more like the colour of the lower interior door trim. My Dad had a Fjord blue, which I learned to drive on back in '63. Then I got a Garnet red '59 in '66, and still have, restoring it slowly!

    • @5150mxVW
      @5150mxVW  4 роки тому

      I don't think they offered Fjord blue for 58's , it was a one year only color for the 59's. Good to hear you still have your 59' , good luck with it and thank you for droppin' in Dave.

    • @davehall7935
      @davehall7935 4 роки тому

      @@5150mxVW Yes, it was a '59 only colour, like my Garnet red, but they did start producing the '59 models in August '58. I think Glacier blue ('58 only) was a paler colour than the video shows. Is the chassis number definitely '58? anything much over 2000000 would be a '59 model or later, from Aug '58. TheSamba.com chassis numbers list is an excellent resource for checking that detail. My father's Bug was bought in September '58, and was definitely Fjord blue (UK spec with semaphores, of course!). The colour is quite emotive to me!

    That's a nicely original find. I suspect the right front wing/fender might not be the correct one for the car, it looks a bit wider than the left one, probably no surprise with it appearing to have had a bash sometime in the past...
