- After looking at the split window Vw Bus and Vw Bug I drive to check out this 54 Volkswagen Beetle .
Please drop a comment below and let me know what you think .
Thank you for all the support Guys !
Hi Guys , thank you for all the comments on the car I appreciate them . I believe this is a January 1955 Beetle , 1955 was a very interesting year for the USA Beetles ! Vin # 079585# and Eng # 096015#
Buy the white one
Would he sell the truck?
My dads car is a feb 55...many “one year only” parts on that year!
@@marcijunebug only 28k and change 55's came to the US in 55'....and yes , early five five's are cool :).
5150mxVW
Nice. Some one has to preserve this.
Thanks for the adventure!
Virtue Streams thank you for droppin’ in VS 👍
Love all the rusty gold you find. Thanks for making me addicted to your channel.
thank you RT , very much appreciated👍
You know if this was going to be your only project, you should have picked it up but its not. You made the right choice.
thank you Robert
what a great way to spend a lovely fall day, all in VW Heaven
Brian Pooley hi Brian , it was a perfect day for a drive , i saw some parts of upstate NY I hadn’t been to and a lot of cars . Thank you for droppin’ in and have a great weekend
I think you made the right choice, no body tags, pretty sketchy.
I kind of agree. While one in my opinion cannot have TOO MANY oval windows, lol, no body tag conjures thoughts of registration hell!
yeah , I think the body tag was the dagger for me . So much work , parts sourcing to finish a car with no body tag ....I could register it here in my state with the tunnel vin....but for me on an early car that tag means so much
Some nice stuff in the yard there. Too bad you had to pass but I understand the too many projects dilemma. Beautiful scenery! Nice work on the welding!
thank you Steve , i appreciate it👍
I think you made the right decision on this one. I'm sure something better is right around the corner. Love your channel.
Thank you for the kind words Russ , very much appreciated
A little idea, if you have access to old welding rods that have gotten wet. Knock the flux off them and you can use the remaining rod to help filling in wide gaps save your wire.
Cant save all of them😉 Great video Jason The welds at the end sounded nice to me. BIG THUMBS UP
thank you Brian , I am diggin' the welder
yup sometimes ya just gotta know when to walk away this was one of those times thanks for taking us along take care
thank you Ted , have a great weekend
Its so sad to see those old and beautiful cars deacaying. Hope somebody will rescue them or even parts of them.
agreed , we shall see
I've been leading the puddle for 45 years... time to watch and teach the younguns sir
👍
Love those views, so beautiful up there!! Yessssssss I would love to find a beauty like that! Save her!
Hi J , I might have to as I heard it might get parted out now , ugh . It was a beautiful fall drive up and down those small mountains so i was content with the drive . I was pretty gassed by the time I got to the 54 and it was getting dark .
@@5150mxVW Yeah... my family lives in Constantia that area is gorgeous. People down here in Texas have no idea what upstate is all about. Great video brother thanks for taking us along.
Seems like a huge project. At least you know it is around.
wish it was not stripped
Waaauw just waaauw and its a freaking semaphore. Those are incredibly rare in the states 👍👍👍😍
Hi Lennert , I know , I need one lol
Yes RARE here in Australia.
I'm lucky enough to be doing a series of videos on a semaphore bus..from the junk pile
Dang, I thought you were kidding about not buying it. I know it’s rough, but it’s a 54!
Hi Joey , I know .....it is a Jan 55' car after I checked the vin .....
Thanks for taking us along bro. All the best
Hi Ken , thank you , all the best to you as well
What a cool car.
👍
Smart call on passing that one up it had a lot missing and what was left was rough the w lid was cool though
W decklids are cool , i was lucky enough to pick up two last night in an oval parts lot👍
It's very clear (to me) that you had the deepest respect for the old Oval, by the way that you carefully closed the front hood! Recognising that it was someone's pride and joy, who may be no longer on this earth.
Good choice on going home with an empty trailer. I know that must have been a a hard decision but your right you have enough projects going.🧙♂️
Thank you Steve , I was gassed by the time I got there ....had I gone there 1st I probably would have bought it
Well done passing on that 54! Too far gone...your welding had come a long way! Nice job!
Steve Muller thank you Steve , much appreciated 👍
Jason you got to start looking further south of the rust and crust salt belt of new england. 😁👍👍👍👍 Getting good with that welder 😁
thank you Will , what fun are rust free cars haha .....thank you , was pretty happy that day👍
There are times when you have to just walk away, especially when you can see grass through the door sill.... ;) .... and thanks for the reminder, I need to get some welding done myself.
thank you Frank , get out there and weld👍
If that 4 lug floor pan, had a solid frame head it would be worth buying. It could be use as spare pan for moving ghia's or bug's body around the yard. 👍
good idea :)
Well by the looks of things. You have enough work in your yard to last you at least five years. But who knows. You may be able to sell it on the west cost for a profit!! Thanks for the great videos
Hi Greg , probably enough for my 7 year old's grandkids lol . Thank you for the kind words , it would be a keeper .
Jason it’s beautiful up there man I would love to come visit sometime. At least you had a nice drive I don’t think you need another project man you’ve got too many send some my way ha ha. Great video keep up keep hunting brother.👍😎👍
you missed the foliage but we still have plenty of rust :) . I have been trying to send that 67 Ghia your way but now you have a nice one ....update vid on the Ghia needed . Thank you CT .
Love the old Cornbinder! Todd the retired trucker
👍
Welder sounded good. It would be nice car to rebuild, but your digging your hole pretty deep.
Jeff Shearer thank you Jeff , i was using a 50 Ft ext cord so I wasn’t sure how well it work . I do have a lot
Of oval parts from various picks ...I haven’t dropped it yet haha ...:)
that oval would cost so much to get all the missing parts you would need to get it dirt cheap to make it work. plus no body tag. on an eary car that is a deal killer. to me.
on an early car it killed it for me too ....thank you Mike
Good call , rough , oh on weld , try something i know you will like , instead of pulling away from weld and watching it puddle , start push into area for stronger and when you see the back you'll be surprised how nice it becomes, after a few time, i welded for 30 years and learned the push into metal is much easier !! Great view on trip !
thank you for the tip John , very much appreciated , newbie welder here ....& thank you for dropping in
Lots of bugs. Love them.
João carlos Fonseca me too , thank you for dropping in 👍
Cant say I blame ya she definitely needed a ton not just the work but all the parts and accessories would not have been O.G. great job bud👍
Thank you Daniel , I hear ya , but I would like to see it back on the road even if it wasn't OG ...has the org motor👍
4:35 Those wheels are Keepers! "you gotta know when to holdem, know when to foldem." Harbor freight tarps are so cheap! Must not be a store near by. Grab the IH pickup.
8:00 Grab the camper van!
thank you Jack , hope all is well
Dear JB91710
I instantly thought the same! But the ragtops should be rescued too!
Best regards luck and health.
Good choice. That one was rough ! Too far gone for sure.
thank you Mr Mac
Well Jason you enjoyed the ride. Really stripped.....Ther's another one out there some were.
It must have been tough walking away from the '55, but it had been stripped of many of its important stuff, such as the pine cones and wood burning stoves.
haha , very true Jim👍
👍looked like a fun journey buddie!✌
it was , thank you E-man
Smart decision! Now back to the 914’s!!
haha ! thank you HM
Tough call on that 54, but I think you made the right decision. It was missing lots of parts. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. You had to go and look.
thank you 65 ' , I like that👍
Yep, I reckon a pass on that '54 was the right thing Jason, there won't be many bits recoverable without a lot of hard work, you've got a lot of projects on the boil.
Like women, ya can't love'em all man!
thank you Gary , I have been rounding up oval parts this week ....hehe
I know somewhere in the backwoods near Cooperstown there's a guy with an oval window and a 23 window bus. You can see them from the road. I'm not sure if it's still there but there was a single cab near the reservoir.
nice , I hope they get saved
@@5150mxVW They're very rough, the single cab should be right across the street from the '66 f100 that I have on my channel; I couldn't see with all the leaves. The 23 window bus is right down the road from a guy with a '70 charger in his lawn. I haven't yet seen anyone out or I would tell you more.
Hopefully one day that 54 get's saved.. Must say, when you stopped at that junction with the lake in front. That looks like were i am in Wales
I hope so too , you live in a beautiful area BMX'r👍
Agree... hate to think of it sitting there with no love just fading away.
Definitely a beautiful drive and some amazing scenery.
Without the body tags, all of the rot, that’s one hell of a project. I honestly think I would have passed as well. Too bad, it could have been a great car if he would have protected it from the elements. Welding skills look like they are getting better 🤙
thank you Jaws , I appreciate it👍, have a great weekend
I so much love these bugs :) they are so cute :)
👍
Good call IMO leaving the Beetle behind. I don't know what the law is in the US, but here in the UK without a VIN you have a hell of a job registering a car, I guess it's the same over there? Plus that car has stood outside without windows for so long it looks seriously rotten.
I saw the needles inside it and the car I'm working on now stood under pine trees for 10 years, the damage they did by trapping moisture is immense.
I could register it here in my state with just the one tunnel vin . Body tags are not a deal breaker on all cars for me but on this one it just means so much to the car . Thank you for droppin in
I saw that advertised. Was temped to call on it. Thanks for making a video for me. I feel the same way you do with too many projects. I guess it was priced high also or you would have bought it.
Hi WW , it wasn't priced too high but as you said , too many major projects already . Also this car is missing soooo many early parts ....and the no body tag was kinda the deal killer for me . I have a couple cars missing them already .
@@5150mxVW I think you made the right choice , there was nothing there , just the skeleton of what was a beautiful car
Good choice leaving that beetle behind, still a good video 😊👍
thank you ....but the truck and trailer are heading out there again ....:)
I do love old cars. I've made that hard decision to leave empty handed a few times before, myself. That 54 has been pretty well picked clean of anything usable. You'd spend a fortune trying to restore that one. And with the body tag being gone it really just kills any soft of value other than what it already was, a parts car. That sure is some beautiful country up there upstate. I love the Dallas / Fort Worth area but, geographically, it's pretty boring. Maybe i'll visit New England one of these days. soak in some early colonial history, maybe stalk a few bugs, visit you, Brian, Mustie, etc.
I did pick up another project about a month ago. I got a 1976 C20 Chevy pickup. It is a little rough but complete and largely rust free. Runs, drives, stops, and, actually, as far as stuff to make it pass inspection I didn't have to do anything to it. It was a farm truck for its whole life. But the important things, and why I bought it, is because it's the same style, color, configuration, etc. as a truck that my dad owned back int he 80's. I remember it vividly. So when I saw this one I had to have it. The ad had been up for less than an hour when I pounced on it. bought it sight unseen, and even delivered across town, for $800. I've never found a deal that good before. Got some gravel put down this week, carports to follow in a few more weeks. Can't wait. Gotta get the 57 Chevy out of the weather.
that is a great find , congratulations ! Same color too , wow ! 800 bucks and delivered , incredible , stoked for you ! Come on up !
@@5150mxVW Yeah with trying to find trucks similar to the ones my dad had it's fairly difficult. He didn't prefer standard colors like black, red, white, blue, etc. His trucks were all brown, this beige/yellow/brownish color, etc. So when I find one that's exact (this is the second one) i try to jump on it.
"Rotten when parked." You are getting good at welding, but that one would take Mustie1 Magic!
Thank you Tolba , the thicker metal was nice to weld on . I'm still on the fence on this car but yeah , if M1 stopped by this would only take us a weekend :)
@@5150mxVW Haha!
RUN!! RUNNNNNNN! You have enough rusty cars to take you until you are in a seniors home to build!!! Hahaha the motor is cool, but,,,,,,,
I wrote this before the end, we will see what you do!
haha , I have enough projects for my 7 year old's grandkids to build lol . thank you GT500
When you find stuff with missing tags, you know that's another kind of semaphore..................
👍, thank you Russell
That's a damn shame the 54 was so far gone. I'm like you, I would love to have a semaphore car. I think they are so cool. Your gonna have to find me one..LOL
At least one we can fight over. See you in the funny paper's brother.
they are tough to find ! I guess I owe you one since I sold " your " 61 huh :).
Hahaha Yeah.
I’m sure you’re both sad and glad you passed on the ‘54. I would have hated to go home empty also! Was the missing body tag the final nail that said pass to you? It would have been for me. Patience will hopefully win out and another one will come up in better shape “with a body tag”!
Thanks for showing us that you tried !
the body tag was the deal breaker for me....rust and crust is the norm lol. Thank you for droppin' in , I appreciate it
If the 54 wasn't stripped, it would be worth restoring.
thank you Ivor
That oval window was kinda rough. The white newer one looked good from what I could see. That 54 was only 2 years newer then my age so I don't feel so bad!
Hi Dave , it was missing sooo many oval parts and most importantly the body tag . I actually didn't even look at that white one lol .
damn couldnt you just have snaked those door visors. I want some of those for may rag. cant find them anywhere around here.
i have few sets in the parts stash ....all the good stuff is in the North East Mikey lol .
OMG, you didn't pick up something.....I'm amazed!
HAHA ! 10 hours driving and an empty trailer , that is a record ! thanks Sasha
You buy it, you save it, and you send it off to a new home....
kinda hard with no body tag ...
Wise decision on that one...........
thank you Terry as the trailer is still hooked up and it's the weekend🤔...haha
Dude, how about a video of the Charger before the snow comes!!🤘🤘
I should take it for a cruise , thank you
Dear 5150mx VW
Yeah, you should definitely rescue the rag tops for selling them (even if only the roofs). The roof rack is very interesting too. The Ovali is very far gone. But maybe some VW fans will be interested after watching this video.
I would love to have the great old pickup and the white van. Or is it a camper?
Congrats! Well welding! I knew that you would get used to MIG very fast.
Thanks a lot for making taping editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health.
thank you CC , quite a few interesting vehicles out there . Have a great day , best regards , luck and health to you always as well .👍
Dear@@5150mxVW
Thanks for replying. I wanted to email you but there is absolutely no "about" thing in the German UA-cam. I hope this will come through to you this way:

Maybe you and Josh will like this!?
My comment on Utube:
Wonderful, beautiful simply fantastic! This car, the role model for the Karmann Ghia type 34, is perfect. Extremely impressive craftsmanship. Never ever in my whole live I have seen such a clean workshop. Nearly unbeliiiievable. I bet this enthusiast has a decontamination airlock! :-) ;-) Great background story too! Very well done by the filming crew also. And my usual ending of course.
Sincerely yours.
We had a VW bus in 1958,
with a 12 hp engine.
Top speed downhill 37 mph.

12 hp & 37 mph downhill ? Must of been heavily modified and zero drag on brakes ;)
@@5150mxVW
We went on vacation in it
in 1970.
more than half of Sweden from central Sweden
to northern Sweden, about 1740 miles back and forth.
It took a long time.

What ya welding on that tongue Jason? First day in VA ; Hi my name is Jason and I'm a Volkaholic! :D)))
Hi, I was welding on a winch mount ....what a game changer now that I have a winch :) . haha, indeed I am :)
@@5150mxVW Ohh that will come in handy, and that's the first step admitting it! I hear the later 80's fox body 5.0 mustangs are easy to update and faaast!
Send that one to beetle heaven it's done
it's a fixable car 710 ....in New England this would be advertised as no rust haha
That's a daily driver up here in Canada
@@sciamatic 🤣🤣 damn that's hectic
@@5150mxVW lol oh ok we don't get rust like that here in south africa
Yeah I would have cake home empty too! Good choice
we shall see , thank you SVW
love the t100!! hope you make it to justins cruise and bbq next weekend .
thank you Fez ...we shall see , great time last year👍
I don't blame you not enough left of the 54 to buy
thank you , we shall see :)
Was it worth to buy for parts? steering wheel, deck lid ?
Hi Rob , I really would like the car saved not parted
Good job I don’t live out there...I wouldn’t be able to help myself...it would have to get saved..it’s an addiction I tell ya...
had I got there 1st and not the end of the day I might of loaded it anyway ...it was missing so many parts I just didn't see me getting to it ....i have a couple ovals ahead of it ...you do nice work , thank you for droppin' in
5150mxVW cheers man...
I would have passed on the '54 as well. It looked like it was gutted pretty good.
too many parts missing and would cost more to restore than buying one all done. the parts guys are rip offs
oh Mikey , you Cali guys pass on Bugs with pin holes in the battery tray😂
Nice vídeo 👏👏👏👏👏👏
thank you , very much appreciated
Yo Volkswagen on my dream car and I like the Volkswagen bus cuz you know, it's like it can fit many people. And yeah.
It is fixable. looks like a job for the MFDM. Its a very rare car and not that bad for what it is.
thank you , I agree , very fixable👍
The oval looks like it someones parts car in the past, and that's all that is left after ssomeone cloned another oval. . A deal like that ,you should get paid to remove it.
I haven't come across many ovals where you get paid to remove them :)
Agree with another comment, poly tarps are cheap. If there isn’t a harbor freight there’s a Walmart.
👍, tarps are good for rain but remove them when sunny
Bugs prior to the 60’s are interesting and a rare find no matter the condition. I can’t believe all of them that you find. If I had infinite amounts of money, tools, and welding skills I would like to take on a VW truck. However I am sure that would result in divorce. Keep on wrenching.
Good call Jason I would of done the same👍😊
thank you , have a great weekend
It's a beatfull VW Sedan, but so expensive repair and no tags... I also no would buy.
"Please don`t touch the sample of merchandise".
Good choice to pass it is just too rough the money it would cost is too much
thank you Alfred , that body tag was the dagger ....work / parts / $$$ not so much . Have a great weekend
What are the odds you would see a Herbie and his evil twin Horace side by side in the guys yard.
You possess more will power than myself.
haha !
@@5150mxVW I had a 55 oval back in the late 70's. I was too poor to fix it then and had to let it go. I don't think I ever got over it. When I see one sitting like this it takes me back.
Don't blame you brother! Definitely not with no body tags!!!!!!! Would be good for wall art
body tag is a tough pill for sure ....thank you Chris
I just spent about three minutes on the samba looking for a 54. I found one in Arizona for $12,000. Arizona… Not the salt belt. It looks to be a very clean car. Although it has a lot of the wrong parts on it. It could be made original.
Now, that being said. Do you want to buy this rusty shell?
Think of the work that would have to take place just to get the metal right. You would probably spend in the neighborhood of $15,000 to put this back in any kind of running condition. $10,000 on the inside.
If I had it to do all over again, well… I’m a glutton for punishment. And it makes for a good videos. So I would probably do it all over again ha ha Ha.
How much do they want for it? you know if it’s anything more than A couple hundred dollars. I would walk away in my opinion.
There’s a flipside to this. Are you looking for that specific car? With semaphores? Then buy it. But it’s going to take a couple more like this , for parts in order to get one assembled that’s reasonable. If I had your money, and I don’t mean anything derogatory about that. because I have very little money. But if I had your means I would be looking for cars down south. In Arizona Texas New Mexico that kind of place. I know you’re way up there in the east, but come down here for three or four cars. If you brought them up there they would sell for a lot more just if you unloaded them because they don’t have any rust in them. Again my opinion..
Great video thanks for sharing!
a couple of hundred dollars wouldn't buy the decklid ...I hear ya , but if us New England guys just bought all the rust free climate cars what would the Cali / Az etc guys do if their dry cars , dried up lol ? Thank you for the comment and insight .....I'm like you , glutton for punishment haha
Man it's pretty toasty, good for a few parts still though. That deck lid wasn't correct for this car btw.
why do you say the deck lid is not correct ?
Put google maps coordinates to go over there to take some glance too , please
Good decision to pass on that one Sir.
Hi John , thank you , have a great weekend
look at you with the metal glue gun
you speak , I listen
4 tab hood and tube fenders should be worth a little bit? Full batwing steering wheel is still there which is crazy! Can’t believe someone didn’t swipe that! Pretty far gone but dang still some good there.
marcijunebug
Tube fenders?? What tube? They are rusted away!!!
greg guenthner 😜😆true dat! Lol
still a lot of good there for sure ....price was ^ and no body tag
I see it is now listed on thesamba.com
The one next to it looks to be in better shape, but has a tree for an engine.
Question One before hooking up trailer "does it have tags?"
great advice , you would think I would ask that question after buying three 66 verts in 3 weeks , 1 in NH , 1 in this area of NY , & 1 in VT ....none of them had body tags ! crazy .
SAVE IT !!!!!!!!
👍
Good call, unless it was free for haulaway there was no money there.
it's still a 55' semaphore ( early 55' ) with org eng.....
Get it. Try to title it. Worst case scenario you part it out.
I could register it here in my state ....I would not like to see it parted out
When it's a 50 percent or more of thick rust.... No thanks at any price.
i hear ya , thank you Mark
The walk away has one missing link. What was the price? That can sway a load up vs dead head home
very true , it wasn't cheap
Indicators...body Tag missing, dash instruments pulled out, wiper motor gone...time to move on....only thing i saw was a motor-gearbox to be pulled....crush the rest.
well AM , that is exactly what is going to happen to this car if it doesn't get rescued
It's a sin to let those cars deteriorate in the past and further out just sitting outside. The ones with the interiors open to the weather are even worse. Medium to better quality tarps are cheap compared to the damage being done without them. :-(
Yep, I reckon if you're going to collect them then you should protect them from the elements, no matter what stage of degradation they're at.
Hi Joe , yeah , I tarp my outside cars for rain then take them off during sunny days ....it's a pain in the ass to cover and uncover them but ...
👍
I would have passed on that not much left....
thank you Marty
