Steven Ho Talks About His Asian American Experience

  • Steven Ho is the kind of multi-hyphenated, creative hustler we utterly vibe with. He’s a comedian by night and an EMT by day... aka he’s saving souls with laughter after saving bodies on the job. Aside from being one of the sickest combinations of gigs we’ve ever heard, Steven’s life-and-laughter saving career is made even more remarkable in light of the racism Steven’s dealt with his whole life.
In this installment of TRUTH AGAINST HATE, we hear once about the too-familiar lunchroom bullying, the jokes on Steven’s last name, the entrapment of the model minority myth, and the confidence wrecking BS that comes with growing up Asian in America.
But here’s the thing: like so many others in the Asian American community, Steven’s turned those negative experiences into fuel for his ambitiously positive vibes. If Steven’s story inspired you, please consider donating to the Hate Is A Virus commUNITY Action Fund. The anti-racism organization uses that money to do good work on the ground in communities around the country.

Lord love you, child, your E.R. skits make me laugh out loud even on bad days. I could go on for quite awhile with praise but I'll sum it up by saying your E.R. bits are complex, creative, subtle (the characters, oh, those lightning fast character shifts) and top level brilliant. Genuine thanks and sincere best wishes!

First, I Hate That You Had To Go Through That. I'm Hoping And Praying That People Will See Each Other More Clearly As Individuals Instead Of Races. And I Don't Mean The "I Don't See Color", I Don't Want To Feel Like That Would Be Disingenuous Because Some People Think They Don't See Color, Until They Check Their Responses. I Hope To See You On Film And Continue To Save Lives Of ALL People. All The People Of My Race....Do Not Speak For Me.

My husband showed me one of your "tips from the ER" videos a few weeks ago & they are soooo funny. I literally laugh out loud every time I watch one so I decided to subscribe to your channel & that's how I came across this video.
I'm so grateful that your experiences with racism didn't crush your humor. I'm also very sorry that you've had to deal with so much hate. I will never understand why some people treat other human beings like that. Thank you for sharing this with the rest of us & keep those laughs coming.

I get what he's saying but from a different place. I struggle bc I'm so different (I hate being vulnerable). I'm a nurse that was my life. That changed after getting hurt on the job. I haven't been able to work in 18yrs. That's hard in so many ways. But my conditions are progressive. I will never be without pain. I have lost the few close friends I had. Bc the things they wanted to do I couldn't or I would say yes that sounds great but then I would have to go lay down for a little while, have to leave bc of my pain or call and say I can't go bc I hurt to much.😢 Then slowly people stopped looking in on me or calling me. I called them checking in on them they just quit calling. I honestly don't know why I have a phone bc it never rings unless it's family. I do homeless outreach when able but I haven't been able to do as much bc I'm struggling with a wound on my leg caused by my conditions. I wouldn't wish the pain and things I deal with on anyone else. I have those folks (not friends imo) that only call for nursing advice or info on food pantries and things like that. Bc that's what I do with homeless and elderly community. They don't want me they just make pleasantries before they start asking me for what they called or texted me for. Or to praise all the good things going on in their lives. I worry so much what will happen when I am older bc I struggle so much now. Honestly having tourettes as well certainly doesn't help things. My pets, rescue, homeless and elderly community where I can volunteer help. But this wound is keeping me from that. So I am stuck I am really social I can talk to anyone. But for some my conditions people don't understand. I here this regularly your to young to be this sick. The people who talk about you behind your back is a huge issue for me. People don't get just bc I use a wheelchair one time and a cane the next doesn't mean I am better or faking. It means I am having a better day. The nickname of the condition that started it all is called the su1c1de disease. Bc the pain gets so bad people take their own lives. That's what has happened to a lot of my friends. Sorry for dumping this on you a complete stranger. But you seem understanding and I truly needed to share this. It was crushing me for last few days. My Mom is not doing well she is struggling with her health and afraid and I have put my nursing cap on to protect myself from how I feel. This is the only way to keep my sanity and mental stability. Again I apologize for dumping this heavy load on you. But you seem kind, caring and compassionate.

It is so mind boggling how intertwined the racism is overseas. In our tiny country in Europe this would be unimaginable... The worst experiences my colleagues (from Singapore, Egypt, South America,...) had was people staring at them - but that was more due to unusual clothing since it doesn't happen otherwise. I can't see why this couldn't be allover the world - it's not hard at all! I understand how tribalism evolved but I don't get why would somebody attack an old man trying to help his daughter with grand kids not hurting anyone. I do hope that never happens again.

Two things. 1) growing up, my last name was Tucker. ‘Nuff said. 2) Where I grew up (or maybe when?) the Asian kids were all considered the smart ones. So you either respected them or were jealous of them. I imagine there was a lot more of the latter. So maybe it wasn’t your ethnicity so much as your accomplishments that caused the problem. Either way, I’m sorry you went through that.

In college in Cali, i took an elective called "Vietnamese American literature." I remember thinking: this is awesome and helps me understand what my parents' generation experienced, but what will come from the next generation of Vietnamese American artists (i.e., you and me) will be a whole new story that needs to be told. I'm so glad you are here, cuz i haven't figured out how to express or share my experience yet (one day).

I am a baby (75) boomer. Th Los Angeles bedroom community that I grew up in was a melting pot of many nationalities/ethnicities. I wasn't brought up racist. Every1 was respected. It wasn't until much later when I started hearing about things my friends' families had suffered that I felt ashamed. Not just for being a natural American but for being a human being. And, it hasn't gotten any better. Humanity is devolving. Thank goodness I'll b gone soon. Humans are losing their humanity. Why is it so difficult to realize that we're all in this together? Come on people now, smile on your brother. DNA proves we are ALL linked.
