THE ULTIMATE SNARE DRUM COMPARISON.
I tuned all my snare drums to the exact same pitch using a tuner.
Drum heads are the same for all snares as well as positioning of microphones and processing of the snare sound.
An experiment for sure ...

Probably the best side by side comparison snare drum video I have ever seen.
Well done
🤘😎🤘
Why oh why did I ever let my wife talkt me into selling my drums set back in 73. I had 2 vintage Ludwig 67 and 69 Supraphonic 400 chrome over brass 5x14 snares. They came standard with my first set, the Downbeat, and my second set, the Hollywood. I really tried to pick out the winner of your experiment..... alas.... that crazy wild chrome over brass Ludwig Supraphonic 400 of 1969 is still a studio mic sounding winner. What a gem..... even after all these years.
The Bass Drum wins!
wow those Ludwig Black Magic can hang out with the big boys. Such killer snares for amazing value.
This is the best snare drum comparison video on the internet...PERIOD! If you're lookin to buy a snare, start this video and close your eyes. When a sound pulls at your heart strings, buy it. Don't be biased. Go with what your ears told you. I'm going with the "Black Magic". With my eyes closed I thought that one sounded the best. My opinion. I also went ahead and purchased the same heads and wires that was demonstrated in the video. My ears are happy. Thanks for taking your time to make and post such great videos.
Thanks mate! I really appreciate it!
Well worth the effort! I love the accuracy of the test! I'm sure this video/series is gonna be helpful to many drummers.
Also: First! haha
Danke dir =) Die Description lesen lohnt sich, dann ist man zuerst dran ;)
Great video. Just goes to show if you set up snare drums well they all sound pretty similar. Was pleasantly surprised by how good the aluminium sounds.
Wow, nice Video. Insane production level, I appreciate the work!
Outstanding Tobias !! Your videos are very well made, thorough and informative.
The copper over steel, and the timeless timber were my two favorites.
That dw bell bronze is killer❤
Awesome drumming, man. Congratulations
Great video man
Great Video! Thanks
Great comparison!
Your content is always great, but I think folks should take notice, you are an exceptional drummer. Keep it up bro.
I just got the Ludwig Black Magic 6.5, killer snare for very little money. Great video mate, love your drum mixes!
Amazing quality in your videos man !, and awesome recomendations and technique, cheers from México bro ! i really like the dw aluminium snare
My Favs:
DW Brass Snare
Ludwig Black Magic 14x6,5
DW Super solide Maple 3/8 14x5,5
DW Black Nickel over Brass
bad ass video and killer snare drums!!!
Hi! Thanks for the great video. My favourite one is the DW Bell brass.
Hell yes! This really is the ultimate!🤘 legit though. Amazing video
Great video! I personally liked the Ludwig Black Magic myself.
Think I'll go with the aluminum, cool video thanks
Great video.
The DW Vintage Copper over Steel and also the DW timeless timber are both super impressive!! Those two stood out to me. I generally prefer the sensitivity and “crack” of Ludwig snare drums over any others. Out of these 13 snares I myself own the 14x6.5 Ludwig Black Magic which I normally use for live settings or practice. Great video! Great playing! Thanks Tobias.
Great video! Was too lazy to get my headphones but listening from my iphone , I liked the 13 Ludwig black magic and the DW timber the most. Cheers!
Great vid man! I have just bought the Dw vintage copper over steel, it's a Monster !
Hands down the most interesting comparison, we can really understand what the diferences are there.
Very nice to spot diferences in those, and well, all snares have the possibility to be a decent snare.
Was für ein Aufwand. Geil!!!
Very nice
Love it bro🔥 can I ask what Hz you tune bottom head to?
I like the Bell Brass and the Aluminum.
A bit too many DWs, when there are so many other good brands around.
The raw sound demonstrations, are by far the best sound.
What I really noticed was that on these all super amazing drums, the biggest difference seemed to just be the shell diameter and depth
So nice
Very nice collection. Also try a Sonor Phonic reissue. It’s a very thick beech shell with diecast hoops. It rly pops nicely.
I like the brass and the alum.
That Aluminum dw is freaking explosive!!!
Super Zusammenstellung! Ich würd mich für die DW 14x6.5 Bell Brass und für die DW 14x5.5 Craviotto Super Solid Maple 3/8 entscheiden :)
thanks for the video, my broke ass don't have the money to buy any of them anyways but you really hear the differences in the overtone and decays with the back-to-back comparison and the tight grooves showing off
Your studio sounds great. Are you using room mics or virtual room plug ins? What size is your room?
That dw aluminum got some wicked crack attack !
I came here for the Bell Brass, and left with the Bell Bronze.
Try DW collector series metal titanium snare drum! 14x5.5 and 6.5 as well
I like the 14x8 DW black nickel over brass the best followed by the DW aluminum
Just a quick note: Original Supraphonics from that era were aluminum, hence the light weight. In your quick comparison at the end it says "brass shell". There are, of course, lots of brass shells made by Ludwig then and now, but the late 60s standard Supras all had aluminum shells (same shells as the cheaper Acrolite, by the way, just with different hardware and more lugs).
What tune did you used for all your snares in hertz?
#1 timeless timber
#2 super solid 3/8
#3 bell brass
Can you please share the ballpark pitches that the heads were tuned to?
Great video. Personally my favorite is the DW BNOB 6.5”x14”, but the 8” is close enough! 🤣🤣🤣 To my ears, that one and the aluminum DW sound the best. I feel that the drums could’ve used just a small bit of dampening like a Moon Gel or a small Snareweight? In doing so I think you would’ve heard more of the different nuances from the drums instead of the overtone of the shell. Just my opinion though! 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for your comment! I thought dampening the snare would bring out the Attack. And The Attack with rimshots and double plied heads is almost the same for every snare. That is why I chose to use no dampening. :) cheers Tobi
I have the DW bcob in 6.5 by 14 and I love the sounds I'm able to get out of it.
High for hard rock and back er down for something a little fatter.
Hello, what is the perfect scientific tune snare in hertz if that exist? I know that depends of the genera you are playing, but that exists?
The Black Magic isn't even that expensive, tbh. Not surprised to see a lot of DW stuff (as a majority of the stuff they make is quite pricey at the very least), and I'm glad to see a Vintage Supra! Love my '76 one!
What did you use for tuning the snares?
My favorite section 4:36 5:07 7:55 8:11 12:59 13:20
I kinda liked the Black Magic sound the most. I'm ignorant to drums, but I'm very curious about the nuances.
pleasantly surprised how much i dug the aluminum! which model is it? is it the 3mm or the 1mm shell?
3mm :)
Bell bronze, Craviotto and DW aluminum
Here's the hilarious, or ironic, part: Those two Ludwigs cost a fraction of what most of the other snares cost, and sound just as good, if not better than many of the other snares. Who gives a frig that their made in China. Show me one drum company not using some Chinese made part in their lines somewhere. Oh, and I've never seen an audience yet who cared how much your snare cost.
If you have a snare that's just not putting out the sound you want, start with a hoop change. I've seen lifeless snares transformed by switching to a different hoop option (triple flange, S, or Diecast). EVERY snare ships will three, pretty dramatic sound possibilities, which can be achieved with a hoop change.
I've always loved aluminum
Supraphonic 🤤
fuck epic vid epic playing awesome work fella, how about a sample pack :)
Damn!!!
🔥🙌🏻
Do honestly sounds really good but just as good as someone the others, however the craftsmanship of an American company is unmatched in this regard so I'm more then comfortable paying the price.
Thirteen snares?? 😮
I prefer the raw sound
I wish I could be rich like you 😌
"Wake up! You need to make money"
Supra
It's funny, the type of snare is probably the least important part of this recording. I mean, with drumming, tuning and production of that standard, snare choice is splitting hairs. I exaggerate, but still.
I like the kick.
... and the DW Aluminum...
Bronze #1 - Aluminum #2
Craviatto #3
