Why Do Boomers Suck at Video Games?

- It’s no secret that young people are the best at video games. If you look at the Fortnite world cup, the older competitor was 24. The person who won it was 16. No one over the age of 30 competed in the DotA international. No one over 30 competes in the Overwatch league, or in competitive CS:GO. So what happens when we 30? Do we just instantly lose the skills we’ve spent our childhoods building, or even worse… do we become interested in other things???
Now the obvious thought is that as you get older, the skills relevant to gaming degrade. Things such as visual aptitude, reaction times, and manual dexterity all degrade as we get older, which would certainly make you worse. But it turns out it’s a bit more complicated than that. And it turns out, at the age of 20, I may only have a few good years left.

Boomers who play video games have a longer life expectancy than those who don’t and they’re smarter and happier. We’re not thinking of it as-it’s us versus young people--just like you don’t think of you versus an NFL football player in the backyard. You’re thinking of you versus your best self. I play Fortnite. I’m at level 228 and I don’t build because I play on a broken iPad. (I still manage to get up to 12 eliminations in solo because I hide behind trees and buildings.)I’m not trying to win tournaments. I’m not trying to even be as good as my children... what I am trying to do is be my best self and delay cognitive decline as long as I can. Playing video games is just one part of my strategy to stay young. Video games are useful for Baby Boomers and we should all be doing it...If we are very good at it, or not, doesn’t matter to us and maybe that is some of the experience/wisdom of which you speak...and very eloquently I might add, for someone of such a young age:)

I experienced this effect when I handed a controller to my dad and explained him how to play a racing game (I think it was some sort of need for speed title). He couldn't control the car at all (FYI, it was a stock VW Golf GTI) and stopped trying after about two minutes. Also he got very nervous, it was like watching a child try to drive a car in real life haha. It didn't help matters that he's quite an insecure guy who doesn't like to be seen failing at, well, anything.
I'm pretty sure older people can have fun with videogames as well, they just don't feel comfortable when plunged head-first into it.
That is lack of muscle memory and exp. Which has nothing to do with exp. If This was true there would be no airline pilots after the age of 24. Which is false. when most pilots are older then 40.

One factor in older people is that the fucks given becomes 0. The more you care about something, the greater the effort given. Older people realize that it's just a game and the rush of gaming disappears. It's like sex life with your spouse. First few years are great but as time goes by, sex becomes a chore. It's the same with videogames.

It's not about being over 30, it's because people over 30 didn't grow up playing videogames like we did that's why we play them and will keep on playing them.

Getting people into not just video games but new hobbies often requires them to have patience, practical accessibility, and to not create a mentality in order to refuse getting additional experience in case they get pissed
