  • This is a breakdown of my personal favorite engine, my #318 #Poly, also known as the Mopar #Polysphere or Chrysler A Engine.
    If you have questions as far as what specific parts are in this one or where to find them and I did not cover it in this video, let me know and I will do my best to help if you’re building one of these boat anchors yourself!

    After getting my license, my second car was a Fury III painted in Turbine Bronze with a 318 2BBL. I drove it for several years and loved it. It had torque, power and phenomenal gas mileage. It was comfortable and roomy with a big truck. I wish I could get another one. Most reliable starting engine I ever had and very low maintenance.

    Great info. Liked lots, six engine capacities is what confuses people: 277,300, 303, 313, 318, and 325 cube engines with 11 long years of production. Down in Australia and New Zealand, we had Chrysler Royals with these, and the engines went a lot better than the alternatives. Chrysler was working the performance verses dollar equation more than any other car maker, so that's why so much interchanges with the LAs and Magnums. When Chrysler bought the Indiana plant from Studebaker, then it allowed the company to retool the whole engine to the new 273 and eventual 318, 340 and 360 powerhouses.

    The 318 Polys were great engines. The original dual quads in the 58 Fury were hot performers. The 2 bbl version’s were so under carbureted that it’s amazing they ran. I swear the carburetor bores on those 2 bbl carbs were at best the size of a quarter and were more suited for use on a 4 cylinder than a V8 - yet they still ran quite well.

    Love the rundown on your engine. Keep up the good work. No problem using any LA 318 dampner without remarking by using a later (1967?) timing chain cover which has the timing marks on the driver side. I like the poly 318 short blocks. Cylinders are thick and, as you pointed out, can readily take a .120 overbore. I've even heard rumors that some blocks, when sonic checked, can be punched out to a 340 standard bore size of 4.04 which is .130 over the 318's standard bore of 3.91 I recently purchased two 318 poly's specifically for the thick wall blocks and forged cranks to be used in my twin turbo 318 build. Cranks may or may not be stronger than, let's say, a SCAT forged crank but for less than half price of a SCAT crank I scored two short blocks. Gotta stretch the dollar when one has a beer income.

    You will pick up some Hp if you get rid of the flex fan for an electric. Those things eat alot of Hp. To find out how much better it will run take it off and put some shorter bolts in to hold the pulley and run her down the hwy. It will be noticeable. Just don't stop moving as you won't have any airflow.

    Awsome video!
    I would like to ad that later LA engines with factory throttle body fuel injection have timing chain covers that do not have the opening for the mechanical fuel pump machined. It is solid.
    There are also covers that are available to close off the opening so it is not absolutely necessary to change out the timing chain cover if you want to use an electric fuel pump.
    Great info, and awsome job!

    I am sure it has already helped someone out.
    Years ago I was trying to figure out all the differences between the small block LAs and the 5.2, 5.9 magnums.
    Back then there was no information in one spot that went through both engines and listed the differences.
    So I ended up doing what you did in order to educate myself.
    Uncle Tony did a great video (last year?) Comparing the two.

Mr Gary Pavlovich and was my guru and I cannot thank him and my good engineering friend John Hatchard enough for their help in creating this, I’m now looking into EFI for it. It’s been a great and continuing adventure. My ambition is to try and get 600hp out of it, probably around 450-500 at present and makes massive torque!

    What people don't realize about the poly engines, is that while they are not great for high rpm horsepower or racing, when it comes to performance and torque under 5000 rpm, say for a reliable, fuel efficient mil that provides great throttle response for every day driving, it is hard to beat, and worth the money.

    Poly engines are canted valve heads like BBC and Cleveland/ 460. There is different versions and chambers but all the same basic head. Rockers at least exhaust are the same as a 273 A engine. I think with some work they will make very good power, better than a 318LA.
    You can use late 318/360 rods in them. Getting a good piston is however the issue. Later engines will take a LA flywheel as well.

    A few things you overlooked: The camshaft in the poly is the same shape (bearing journals, length, timing gear connection, and oil pump drive gear) as the LA camshaft but the cam lobes are positioned differently. It would be easy for any cam grinder to use an LA camshaft blank & grind it to the poly lobe configuration provided they had the profile on hand. Also, Oregon cams can regrind your old cam to a slightly higher lift. Crankshaft & rods are different than newer LA engines. I use the term newer because the 273 & early 318 LA engines used a forged crankshaft & lighter rods. The 318 cast crank will fit just fine if you use the rods for that application. Cast crank rods are a lot beefier and are the same as the 360 rods. I know this because I have build a 65 poly using a cast crank. Just use the main bearings for the later LA engine. Like you said the LA pistons will work just fine except for the valve reliefs. A good machine shop could cut them. The key word there is "Good". Canada continued to use that engine for quite a long time after we discarded it. They were also used in a lot of industrial/ marine applications, they were very tough because they were made from high nickel iron. Yes, Toth machine has done a lot of work with these engines.

      Yeah I forgot to mention that, although I have no first hand knowledge of doing that to a poly. From what I understand, some machining needs to be done to the crank to fit it properly but I find conflicting claims related to that and I’m not 100% sure if it’s necessary or not.

    Polys are the most under rated Mopar V8. The block will take an LA stroker crank and with proper porting the heads will fill the cylinders. The intakes are the hardest thing to get. There was a very nice dual plane available a while back that was a Poly version of the Hot Heads early hemi intake.

      Designed and overbuilt in the days of quality and integrity, the A block 318 with it's superior canted valves and semi- hemi head design was 30 horsepower stronger than the LA 318 that replaced it, but almost as heavy as a 440, and be bored and stroked to 440 cubes, at which point it would make more power with it's better semi hemi combustion chambers. Very nice engines! Nice job with the car and video!

    • @jeromebreeding3302
      @jeromebreeding3302 2 роки тому +2

      @@arthurrose6473 Agreed. The stagered valve arrangement on the poly, was copied by both Chevy and Ford. Chrysler should have developed the engine further, but with the Hemi archetecture of the block(HEAVY), it was handycapped, especially with the Advent of "thin-walled" casting techniques.

  • @larryhutchens7593
    @larryhutchens7593 Рік тому

    A couple more things. Harmonic balancer: The ones for the later LA engines will fit OK but, like you said, the timing mark is on the wrong side. Simple solution: locate TDC #1 cylinder & mark the balancer accordingly then use a dial back timing light for the ignition timing. You will have to use later LA pulleys also because they align differently. It's a good idea to go through this, it will save some aggravation later on. On the headers: The exhaust center to center distance on the poly is the same as a Phord 302/ 351 engine. I have toyed around with the idea of fabbing a set of shorty headers using poly flanges (available on Ebay) and welding on a set of Ford pick-em-up shorty headers. They would fit on a pick up but probably not a passenger car W/ power steering.

      That is exactly what they were made for. They were in a lot of trucks and were the base V8 for cars of the time. The main problem the Poly had was it was undercarbed with that puny 2bl. Theh average 318 poly was rated at 240hp with a 2 barrel. When they introduced the Wedge 318, it was rated the highest at 220. They way the Poly orginated was when Chrysler decided to introduce a V-8 to Plymouth who, up until then, only had straight 6s. They could have put the 354 (rated at nearly a hp per cube when equipped with dual quads) but Plymouth was their economy branch and got the smaller 315cid Hemi with the poly heads. • @DaddysMoneyGarage
      @DaddysMoneyGarage  2 роки тому +3

      It’s a hard gauge because the original poly in my car was so worn out that it would not be able to provide a good benchmark for the power gain with the head work. However these heads have been milled .010 and the block decked .005. With the pistons in this engine it brings the compression to about 9.5:1 if I remember correctly. Factory is 8.5:1.

    was this stock with an alternator and did it have a dual brake master cylinder in this from the factory?

    • @DaddysMoneyGarage
      @DaddysMoneyGarage  6 місяців тому

      No. It had a roundback alternator(no longer available). The squareback replaced it and has one more ground than the factory roundback, and for months I kept blowing voltage regulators until I learned about the extra ground. Hooked it up, grounded it out, and that fixed it.
      Originally the car had a single master cylinder. I swapped that out for a master out of a 1968 Fury, swapped the splitter block for a later one, and replaced all the brake lines with stainless steel. Much, much safer.

      The scalloped valve covers are a dead giveaway. Also, most polyheads will have 2 bolts for the valve cover, one on each end. Some have a third bolt in the middle of the covers. The evenly spaced intake runners and exhaust manifold pipes are a giveaway as well. Not to mention the sheer size of the thing.

    Why do they call it a “Poly” ?

    • @kart70
      @kart70 2 роки тому +1

      Poly is short for polyspherical. This is the description of the head combustion chambers just like hemis and wedges. In fact the original poly was developed from the first gen hemi. They wanted something lighter, less complex, and easier to assemble/maintain than the dual rockershaft hemispherical engines so they modified the design of the hemi head enough to get the rockers on one shaft. Thus, the poly was born.
