Pakistan began its post-partition journey by joining multiple military alliances led by the United States. But in the decades afterwards, Islamabad forged an “iron brotherhood” with Communist China. Pakistan’s first Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan recognised the Communist regime in 1950, the first Muslim country to do so. The Chinese regime supported Pakistan in its wars against India and also supplied materials and blueprints for Pakistan’s nuclear programme. Today, China is the largest investor and arms supplier to the country. What led to this thriving partnership between Pakistan and China? How did they build an “iron brotherhood”? Where does India figure in this equation? Palki Sharma tells you on Flashback.
