Cattle allowed to graze in the southwest is main cause of this intense, long-term desertification process. I work in riparian/wetland and general native restoration and am always working towards restoring the southwest. This video made me love you two so much more! Keep going.

Thank you so much! Agreed on the overgrazing. We've seen it first hand. I think the free range laws cause a lot of issues. It needs to be better controlled and managed.

Lately I walk through the National Forest every day for about 2 miles. A beef cattle bull was there, in tact and kind of mad because we were close to the family. That's at 8000 to 10000 feet they are by far the main presence in the woods. I don't like it at all but nobody is volunteering to stop that I can see. We had rains lately but it was super dry and no water whatsoever. I watched a lone pronghorn run around alone out there and I couldn't figure out how it could find water because we never saw any on our walks.
I would however like to see elk thrive.

My husband and I are so THANKFUL to have stumbled upon your videos. Within the next year, we’ll be re-locating from the suburbs to a 10-acre plot of land in the desert, and it’s relieving to know that we’re not alone.
Thank you for showing us and the world the beauty of working with, not against, nature. We look forward to walking alongside you both in our permaculture journey! ♥️

Can I make a suggestion ? Try setting up gabions about 3 ft into the ground, it creates a natural leeching basin keeping moisture and water in the surrounding ground areas. I'm sure you've thought of it, I just haven't seen it yet.

Great looking couple and beautiful project.
The extent to which you will transform your 40 acres into an oasis depends a lot on how carefully you design your earthworks, so that you don't lose any water as runoff, and manage to infiltrate every drop of it.
As was said in the permaculture design course, the dry climate is where permaculture shows its value the most.
I hope you show us sometimes a map of your property from above with the contour lines drawn, so we can better grasp what you are dealing with.
I'm trying to launch a similar project myself, in a mediterranean climate, latitude 43, USDA zone 9. But legally it's very difficult to get the necessary permits in my country (France). I want to rely heavily on the dryland techniques, as they are super powerful.
Great cistern build. I always try to avoid using liners, but it's true that when it's fully covered up and protected from UV rays, EPDM liners can last a very long time. there are some that have been manufactured 50+ years ago (at least it's the number I remember), and, when they were checked, you could not tell them from a new liner. So hopefully yours will last a century or more.
    Looking forward to seeing more
    Julien

Native people's lived "off grid" in the desert for countless thousands of years, and they had a whole lot fewer resources than you have. There is no reason that you can't have a spectacular future where you are. You are certainly willing to put in the work, and you are smart enough to make it happen. Much respect from me!

I absolutely love what you guys are doing, it is possible to turn it around. I saw a programme years ago about a guy who turned an arid area around planting 1 tree at a time, it took decades but the area is now lush and green! I also saw a programme on how they turned things around in Yellowstone National Park by reintroducing wildlife that had been wiped out by man. Its inspiring and the rewards are priceless! The more people who turn to permaculture the better our planet will be.

Love what you're doing! I'm working toward sustainability and it all started when I changed my diet due to an autoimmune disease. It made me think about how God gave us this land to eat from it and now everybody eats processed and nobody knows how to work the land. We're totally dependent on the government. Our natural immune systems and natural resources are so important. It's important to live healthy.

It seems like both of you are well-read on permaculture design and application. In addition, I would greatly appreciate a recommendation on where to start (literature or otherwise) for a couple who desires to build a homestead and develop a property responsibly. Hey guys I like what you are doing.
We live in arid places as well, we can not use our dirt as we're on 15 feet of shincracker rock. We are trying growing vegetables and fruits in wicking beds and 20 L or 65 L container plus old bathtub, we made them up out of this we had around the place to save rain water. It's worth it as we water in summer weekly if the heat don't kill it and winter around 16 days. Must say I'm thinking of growing under ground as well using the sun power lights in the opal mine as you have said it is easier to control temperatures. I love how your building your house its great. No yall are not crazy liveing off the grid . I think that it was a very smart move . I think that everybody should be thinking about liveing off the grid because look at the bad economy that the US is in and alot more countries around the world. High gas , food , rent , buying alot of homes that's high costing . Alot of people are running out of waters . There's wars , floods , tornadoes , hurricanes , fires , earthquakes, homeless people , all kinds of diseases that's making a lot of people sick . It would be alot of chaos for a lot of people that's liveing on the grid if something very bad happened and the bank, food , lights whatever systems and everything shut down . We are liveing in some very hard times so everyone should be prepared . Yall did the right thing . Miss . Linda ❤❤❤❤

Jim , I’ve been watching ya’ll I guess 2 years or close to it . I totally understand and respect what you and your beautiful young lady are doing. You both took and ran with your dreams that’s a great thing .Ok this is my dilemma. I own out right my little 2bedroom 1 bath house nice size garage in NewOrleans.I want to add on the back I would love to do a type of earth bag addition.Of course New Orleans is below sea level, so you see we’re I’m going, my house now is raised three feet off ground. In sure if I go four to six feet I would hit water. At least that’s what the professionals say . Ive dug a good 4 or 5 feet no water I’m am on a old ridge that higher than most of city but. You the man Jim what suggestions do have, i could just either wth a chain wall , cinder. Block pillars with metal or wood Joyce’s..I’m definitely going with some kind of earth design structure.Give me some ideas Jim , like you said you never want your bags getting snags! Never get your bag with a snag, that could be ugly.

It's not easy here in Arizona growing a garden. I know it probably gets hotter in Tonopah, AZ than where you live. It never snows in my area. It gets cold here in the winter but not cold enough to snow. My Avocado trees do fine in the winter. We have to go to great lengths to keep them cool enough to make it through the summer. You should try growing an Avocado tree there.

@@ourselfreliantlife absolutely! I did my PDC with Geoff Lawton back in 2012/13 and I'm always interested in folks putting permaculture into action 👍

Your on the right path and doing the right things to live in that environment. And yeah, dirt, you have an abundant resource there and should build all kinds of structures and techniques to see how each works there. I also recommend that you bury air tubes and feed into your earth bag house for natural AC since you have low humidity this should help a lot. Good look you all and we will keep watching.

I want to start a movement to restore riparian zones 1 km either side of every waterway; getting food forests working with mycorrhizal fungi should bring water back inland especially if the movement allows forests to go back to coastlines. I was looking for cheap land but I might help fund people that already have land and want to do similar things.
I am also working on trying to create hardier hybrid plants that can deal with desert and flood.
I have a fern hybrid so far.
I would love to collaborate with you both if you are interested in starting a riparian zone project that plants out and propogates plants to share with other people and maybe help people new to farms do surveys and propogate and share plants too.
Geoff Lawton has started food forests and permaculture in deserts.
He might have some ideas you could use

I love what you are doing. I have done the ranch thing but I forced the land to do what I thought it needed to do. But I have changed my way of thinking. I left that behind when I lost my wife.
No I am starting over and looking to do exactly what you are doing. I bought a 1975 18 foot travel trailer I am doing a total rebuild so I can move it into land and work to improve the land and live in harmony with nature in the best way I can. I don't have a partner and you are blessed to have each other. Maybe one day I will be lucky enough to connect with a woman who has the same vision.
