Is Orangetheory for YOU? - Ft. Will Tennyson

  • I've been working out my whole life but I'm not going to lie,
    I was intimidated at the thought of Orangetheory. I couldn't
    understand the concept of having everyone's heart rate visible to all.
    Were people comparing themselves to each other? What were Splat points ?
    Maybe I couldn't keep up?
    Like many things that we build up in our minds, the reality is much different than the
    image.
    Come with me today for a birds-eye view of an Orangetheory workout.
    What brings people here? Can the workout be tailored to you ?
    Do you need to be fit? Thin? Young?
    See what my son, Will Tennyson has to say about the workout.
    Maybe you'd like to give it a try.
    I hope you enjoy the video!
    Nancy xo

    You and Will could always invest in OT or start a gym/spa/health food fitness center. One stop shopping with the Tenny family!

    I started OTF a few months before my 56th birthday in Greensboro, NC. I've always lifted weights, jogged and practiced yoga several times a week, but a good friend of mine just kept pestering me to go. My first class was BRUTAL - I had like 40 splats, but I did love it. After 600 classes and turning 60 a few months back, it's done more for me than I could ever tell you - I absolutely love it. Yeah, yeah - it's expensive and your never gonna get ripped doing a 20 minutes of floor exercises a few times a week, but you will learn proper form and how to keep improving... And the benchmarks give you a goal to keep striving for more. Your age doesn't matter - get fit and have fun at the same time.

    I’ve been doing OTF since 2020. I love that there is a variety of people, ages, and fitness levels. I started at over 210 lbs never really having worked out before. This is the only exercise I’ve ever been consistent with, and I am healthier, stronger, and I have more energy now in my 40s than my 30s.

    2:54 That whole class was in orange at the same time. Nice!
    I went to OT for 2 years until the injuries really starting piling up. I was doing stuff outside of OT, too, but I was finding that I was losing muscle monthly when I would do the in-body scan. I was super frustrated with the lack of floor space for the strength section and having to walk around to find the dumbbells I needed.
    Have you tried Burn Bootcamp? It's like OT but more focused on strength. If I ever decided to spend that kind of money again, I think I'd try Burn. It didn't exist in this area until a year or so ago.

    • @MamaTenny
      @MamaTenny  Рік тому

      Are you in Canada? I never heard of Burn Bootcamp! I’m lucky, my OT has tons of space! The injuries are game changers, I often won’t go as hard as I could on tread, for example, because I know my knees will complain later!

      @@MamaTenny I'm in the northern part of the US. I think it's still a fairly new franchise. It came here in the past year, so maybe it'll head your way soon.
      Do you normally take class that time of day. It looked like a 1G, which would make a huge difference. 2Gs are kinf of dicey with the space, and 3Gs are really rough, especially when doing things like burpees, pushups, etc. i was constantly having to rearrange my position so I wouldn't kick someone in the head. I felt like I spent more time doing that than anything else on the floor.

    I went to an OT once and it was fine, but the trainers were not particularly attentive (the class was only like half full and there were two that were very new to fitness that were getting somewhat condescending treatment from them if any at all). We still thought it was fine though, and that the workout was good and maybe just those trainers weren't great and/or they were having a bad day. Then we heard the price and were like NO WAY this is worth it! 😅
    The concept does appeal to me though, and I think that if I didn't have the other kinds of workouts I have (and had a bigger paycheck than the one I get at a small non-profit) I would probably end up there too and find trainers I like!

    • @MamaTenny
      @MamaTenny  Рік тому

      Hi Susannah, it’s so true that the coaches can make or break it! I’ve found that the few that are not fabulous, don’t last anyway. It is pretty expensive at about 200$ cdn especially since you already are so active in other things! I don’t think you’d have time for it!! Always appreciate your comments Susannah ❤️

      @@MamaTenny yes it has just recently changed owners so they are doing a grand reopening soon I believe. Ironically the gym is by Brock university and close to Niagara college so you’d think it’d be busier. I think there will be a lot of gyms closing as people feel the squeeze of inflation tbh. Personally I am more like Will (hypertrophy training) and my wife is more OTF. I go sometimes just to spend time with her it’s fun (shhh don’t tell her I said that).

    Did your son say most people think it’s for older people or women? I thought it was for younger people?
    How much does it cost? Thx

    • @MamaTenny
      @MamaTenny  Рік тому +3

      Hi Jane, I was wondering if anyone would catch that, thank you! I think this speaks to people’s perception of OT. Will believed, as a lifter, that if I went, it must be for older women! On the other hand, I thought it was just for young people. My husband thinks he’s not fit enough to go! What I was hoping to show was that it truly can be for everyone and there is no “typical” member.
      Seemingly, prices vary and there are several packages available depending on how often you think you’d go. I’m Canadian and have an unlimited membership so that I can go as often as I like, which is about 200$CDN per month. If there’s one near you, go in for a free session and try it out! Thanks for your comment ❤️

I’m with your husband I am not fit enough to go. I swim at the Y but I am over weight and don’t think it’s for me yet. I couldn’t keep up with that circuit at all. @MamaTenny  Рік тому +1

      @@janehoward5245 oh yes Jane! Many people come with an eye to losing weight. 2 members I know lost 100 lbs. it’s not a matter of keeping up, it’s just moving. There are lots that only ever walk on the tread (or can use a bike or strider), use very light weight, tons of modifications. You burn a shocking number of calories. The bark is worse than the bite! Consistency is key. Keep me posted! Didn’t realize you’re from Toronto! 💋🇨🇦
