I've been saying for years Kia Hyundai use poor cheap wire harnesses which turn into electrical problems on the vehicles & now fires, I had a 16 Sorento what a nightmare almost everything broke electrical issues up the a** battery continually dying, moon roof wouldn't close just a disaster, they entice with the designs of the car but reliability eventually catches up to you... I remember Hyundai back in the 80s Pony Stellar were also disasters.

I just bought a 2023 Kia Soul, and the dealer assured me I wouldn't need a down payment, but now I'm terrified after learning about the recall for the 2023 Kia Soul. Having dealt with a problematic Chevy Trax 2016, I'm really scared of facing issues with this new car. I have a backup 2013 Tundra, and I might go to Toyota to see if I can trade in the Kia Soul for a Corolla Cross. While I do admire the Kia Soul's shape and style, I'm just not ready for the stress of another potentially problematic car.

Do not buy any newer Kia or any newer Hyundai with GDI technology, because they are unreliable. Always buy the older models with the V6 engine, whenever it is possible to do so. Only problems I have had with it have been needing a battery every couple years. And now it needs a power steering unit and it has that weird slipping pulley when it has been sitting for a few hours. Other than that, it is mechanically sound.

  • @guitarxy1948

Since 2003, my wife and I have owned either a Kia or Hyundai, and with the exception of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, we have had no significant issues with any of them. They have been dependable and inexpensive to operate, but we have not put more than 97K miles on any of them and have taken very good care of them from a maintenance standpoint. The vehicles we have owned are: (2) Hyundai Santa Fe's; 2007 Sonata; 2011 Sonata; 2012 Sonata Hybrid; 2016 Sonata (leased); 2018 Sonata; 2016 Kia Sorento SX; 2023 Sportage SX (purchased in February, 2023 and a 2023 Sorento SX (purchased last week and immediately took it on a 2000 mile vacation trip). The problem with most foreign manufacturers (and American) is that their reputations are established early on, and if the ownership experience is bad in the beginning, it takes a while to repair the damage done. I'm 74 and I remember the introduction of the Toyotas and Hondas to the US. They were absolute pieces of junk and stayed junky for a few years, but then the Japanese got serious about building a quality and reliable vehicle. It took them a few years, but the image of Toyota and Honda changed, and most people recognized that both manufacturers built a darn good product. Kia and Hyundai are on the same trajectory, and it began way back in 2004 (Hyundai) and 2008 (Kia) when the 100,000 mile/10 year power train warranty came into existence. Automobiles, regardless of the manufacturer, are mechanical with lots of moving parts, and I am a firm believer in the idea that if you take good care of them, they will, by and large, take care of you. If you change the oil and oil filter and service the transmission by manufacturer recommendations, there is a high likelihood, your car will easily get 100,000 miles or better, but the key for longevity is maintenance, pure and simple.

The transmission works flawlessly. Everything electrical still works. Aside from regularly scheduled maintenance, I've had no huge expenses to deal with yet (I did have to replace the head gasket once, but that was not a surprise since they can dry out and crack over time causing leakage and I had to replace the starter once). So, are Kia's crap? Not mine. I've owned them since 2003 and I've had no serious problems with any of them (only owned two models since 2003), two Kia Sedonas (2003 and 2008) and the Optima (2003). On my third KIA. All have been perfect. There’s crappy cars with every brand. The nice thing is I get a factory 60,000 warranty which I don’t think anyone else does. If I buy a Honda or Toyota I only get a 30,000 warranty. And extended warranties don’t cover what the factory one does no matter what they tell you. So I typically trade my vehicles in at 55-60k miles. So with any other brand that leaves me having to drive the think for 30k mikes with no warranty. Say KIA is crap. Not been my experience but say it is, I’ll always own one under warranty so it’s a non issue. Now if you’re talking about buying a used vehicle out of warranty than you could make a case. At that point I would prefer a Toyota or Honda for sure. Problem is, I can buy a new KIA for the price of a used Toyota or Honda.

When you warranty a product, you always do so based on the life expectancy you are predicting. You can always get greedy and have the warranty expire long before you expect a failure but never the opposite way. If KIAs were breaking down, on average or by any high percentage during a warranty period, KIA would be going out of business. But they are expanding.

Had a 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid up to 150,000 miles using it for Uber and Lyft. Had NO problems until about 140K minor oil drips, etc. Always use Mobile 1, did maintenance myself and did regular gas treatments. Oh, a major fuse went out, cost 200. That's it. I sold it for $7,000 at the $150.00 mile mark. Have a 2017 Kia Optima PHEV at 50k miles. Hoping to be similarly blessed.

I have a Kia e-Niro (EV). OK there’s nothing much to go wrong with an EV but the car has been great to drive and own. I spent €520 on electricity last year over 19,500 km (I live in France)....to put petrol in the hybrid version @50 mpg would have cost around €1,850 for the same distance. An EV is really a hard nosed economic choice here and so far we’ve had no problems on long hauls around Europe.

The Kia Sorento from Car and Driver was a SX trim so it had the horrendous 8 speed dual clutch (DCT) transmission. Hyundai/Kia DCT has so many issues with their DCT so avoid any models with DCT. Their conventional 8 speed transmissions are reliable. I have also seen a good history with Hyundai/Kia CVTs.

Dang I bought an 2006 kia rio for $400 last year September with 57k on it. In good shape body wise. The car now have 64k on it. So far I have obviously change the timing belt, spark plugs, coil pack, change transmission fluid, air filter, pcv valve, oil and filter, cabin air filter and water pump since it been sitting up for 4 years not driven. Two weeks ago it shut off on me due to the camshaft position sensor. Replaced that. Overall it been reliable to me.

I loved my Kia 2016 Kia Sportage. I was a Honda and Toyota owner for years and on an impulsive buy I decide to go against my own advice and bought my 2016 Kia Sportage brand spanking new. I really didn't have a complaint about Kia until I was riding down the highway one evening and the car just lost power. After towing it away the mechanic told me that the engine was seized and it was a $7000 repair.

Scotty! I just bought a brand new Honda Accord Sport 1.5 Turbo. I heard using the sport mode/paddles will make the transmission break super fast! Is this true? I bought this JUST because it was a Honda and I wanted a reliable sports car that wasn't absurd in price like a Typer R

No it will break it…The CVTs in Hondas are pretty well made. Why would they offer a sport mode if it breaks the transmission super fast? I have a 1.5t civic CVT and I drive it all the time in sport mode. The paddles don’t break the transmission, there are many safeguards in place to prevent that from happening

Kia/Hyundai exterior and interior are amazing (Not elantra N tho', Hate the overstyling). But.. them engine and transmission just isnt well made and thats fact (Even the hyundai itself admit it before and said that they'll try to improve.. But how long would it take? So far this doesnt look good for Hyundai/Kia. And i want them to succeed too tbh

Love my 2020 KIA Sorrento. Last year before the Major redesign. Best car we have ever owned. 50,000 miles and still no problems. AWD with the 3.3L V6 consistently gets 27 MPG on the highway. Very comfortable ride. I believe the key is maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. Yes, the 4 cylinder engines, especially the turbo 4 cylinder engines, are crap. I am a total believer in this design, and Kia should have never gotten away from it. Yes. Ours was built in America. Scotty, I'll bring this one to you, and you can put it to the test if you like.
