I haven't made it all the way through the video yet so I'm not sure if you addressed it, but football doesn't have an all star game outside of the USA. International breaks happen throughout the season where players are called up to represent their international teams for various reason. Most of the time it's to play qualifier games for the international tournaments such as the world cup, European championships etc. other times it is just friendly games for the teams to gel leading up to these tournaments. Rupert is a very manipulative and toxic person; I have seen people that remind me a lot of him pull similar moves. My guess is that it makes him feel justified in his own actions, and he probably sees it as good mentoring.
Oh yeah, that's definitely abusive/addictive behavior. If Nate joins him, then it's not "I made a bad choice because I'm a horrible person", it's "everyone was partying, and things just happened!"

I figured it was something like that, but I've only watched the British version of the Office. Never got into the American one.
