Welcome back! I think that it's a bit overpriced for the performance, especially for the GPU that, if I recall correctly, does not even has drivers updates anymore
One thing people can look for on eBay are open box hardware. They are often Amazon returns. The Ryzen 7 machine I just built in August 2022 was built in that manner and saved about $150 doing so. Granted video cards can still be an issue but you can get a GTX 980 now for just over $100 and a GTX 970 for just under $100. That would have put such a build a little over $500
I know this is from the scalper era, but >$100 for a GTX 760? I swear I saw the GTX 970 for only $30-50 more than that at the time and I'm pretty sure you could get an AMD alternative like the R9 280/280X or even R9 380 for about $80-100 if you couldn't afford an RX 470/570 4GB/GTX 970 at around $150-200. Other better alternatives would've been the RX 560 (4GB, fully enabled version), GTX 960 (4GB) or even the rare 4GB 750ti.
GTX760 is a really bad purchase... I'm aware that it is more important to get a decent CPU, since the GPU can be upgraded down the road... and since he already had the 1150 platform, the 4790 is a reasonable buy, and i asume it came at a high cost since all old i7 are not really budget friendly since the demand for them is still present. BUT GTX760 was not a good choice, Kepler was one of the worst architectures Nvidia released in the last 15 years or more, followed by a massively improved Maxwell, which was very efficient and way better optimized. I don't think any Kepler card aged well, and so for the same price tag i would suggest to get an R9 380 that packs 4gb of vram and way better performance for modern titles (comparable to 1050Ti). If not, a GTX960 4gb could also be a good buy Also, i would have kept the original 8gb of ram, if you had 2x4 that would have been a good stop gap for a while, and maybe throwing 2x2 could have bring 12gb in dual channel, that would had been enough for that PC and allowed for a better GPU. If your friend had 1x8gb then it was pretty easy to throw another 8gb down the road. Anyway, despite how i love to have extra ram, i think 8gb is "ok" for not so heavy tittles (looking these charts no game ever used even 9gb of ram, and i'm pretty shure that if the entire system only has 8192 then the PC would pass some non-critical stuffs to the pagefile in order to allow game to play smoothly), so that extra ram money was better spent in a better gpu PS: Having extra vram also improves ram efficiency btw
Something that old should never be built, but bought as a package at much deeper discount, like half that max, thing is fully depreciated, $99 email machine in no time.
i7 3930k and 3960x of the X79 platform are very rare and at best they would be on pair with R5 1600, but with lower memory speed and at a very large power consumption. They are nevertheless perfectly valid platforms for gaming even nowadays which is insane considering they are 12 years old right now (in 2023) and i can predict they coudl remain usable for a couple more years no doubth Also, the 8 core intels from the X99 platform should be a really interesting compare against 1st and 2nd gen Ryzen, they have more modern instruction sets and are DDR4 compatible, so i really hope these get a test in this channel aswell
I7 is still capable CPU. Since gtx 760 doesn't get driver updates anymore I wonder how much will it last? Also the Kepler architecture performs really bad in modern games, where I think that even GTX 750 ti would perform better in some titles.
The 4790 was really a revolutionary chip. I find that it maxes out and works in parity very nicely with the 2060 GPU in most games which is crazy that such an old CPU can still keep up with minimal bottlenecking with a gpu 10 years later.
there is one more option if you want to save some money, get 4c 8t Xeon e3 1270 v3 for 1150 Socket which is basically i7 4770 without integrated graphics, no overlocking but there is turbo boost.
I managed to do this for slightly less and with a 970 graphics card with some shopping around and parts flipping and by the way that was total system price including monitor and keyboard and mouse I went with 900p 75htz monitor witch ment all modern games played awesomely with above 60 fps and reasonable settings
