    The Essential Guide to Any Motorcycle Traveler - Online Course: rtw-adventures...
    This motorcycle came on the scene about 7 years ago. We were waiting from a long time and finally, most of you guys, include me were a bit disappointed. Big and heavy bike was not what we expect. The legendary Yamaha Tenere 750, 5 times Dakar winner, has nothing common with the one we saw. It is coming with totally new face, powerful 1200cc engine, which delivers 116 H.P. The seat is double now and the chain is replaced with drive shaft. It has upside down, full adjustable suspension, ABS, traction control, 23 litters tank and nice windscreen. All of that is not bad at all, but the weigh rise to 261kg. This immediately put this motorcycle to a different category “ Heavy travel enduro” , not in the one we all desire “ Adventure motorcycle”. Anyway I tested and I have to confess that I was nicely surprised. Except the weigh I liked anything else.

    It's an excellent road bike , almost effortless , turns exceptionally well and controlled , handles strong winds. And best off all its so comfortable for all day riding. Excellent value I reckon

    Really outstanding real world review. I love this bike now! Started with the Vstrom DL650 but realized its underpowered for longer **comfortable** cross country journeys where I want to hear the birds and NOT the revs! Quickly moved up to the DL1000 but once in that category couldn't help to look around and sure enough I came across the Tenere. Yes its heavy but as you said, that's only a concern at stand-still or very slow maneuvers. The bike is well balanced and feels comfortable. Can be ridden for any lengths and delivers power when needed **without*** screaming! THat was my criteria. Expensive? Sure.. but then, things cost money! Well done!

      Get a good low mileage used one. I got one last year with 9K miles on the clock. Saved myself loads of cash and the bike was in excellent condition. Very comfortable on long rides and very reliable. I am 5'9" and the height's not an issue with the seat at the low setting.

      just need to carry a winch and some kind a tripod system to pick it up and out. Just kidding. I ride a heavy road bike now but am considering this as my next. Mostly roads, but in Latin America you will see roads that aren't roads yet where you will wonder why they have an off road track the width of a highway. I rode a 2003 Kawasaki Voyager pulling a trailer from the US to Panama. My wife rode a DL650. 3 weeks and there were many days I wish I could have gotten her to swap with me, but mostly because of the trailer. Last trailer trip beyond North America for me. Even Mexico's beautiful tollroads would suddenly go to trash roads for many miles where they were repairing them (yes, you still got to pay). I love my shaft drive, and true CC (of course the DL650 doesn't have that). Thanks for listening.

    Great bike. I've taken it on single tracks and it did well. Yes, to pick it up is difficult. Then again I'm not a small guy. You can go most places.

    Bought my 2013 Super T brand new in 2016. It just sat on the dealership floor for 3 years as peeps in this area (Florence, S.C.) weren’t much into the big ADV scene, apparently. My gain. Purchased OTD for $10,900. Best bike I’ve ever owned! Bullet proof, plenty of power, fantastic comfort, more than capable on fire, dirt, gravel and moderately rocky roads (baby head size rocks are no problem). I’m 5’7”, 170 lbs and I’ve dropped this bike about a dozen times (mostly in sand and mud; never on gravel or rocks). The ONLY blemish on this bike is a few scuffs on the engine guard plastic bar caps on each side; a testament to Givi engine guard design and what an absolute tank the Super T really is. In fact, I’ve actually dropped it twice on pavement (once on a stall whilst turning; once at a fueling station when I let her slip away from me and slam full force on the concrete!), and barely a scratch as mentioned. Crazy. No shame in dropping this bike IMO. Shit happens. But, know this: This bike will take you and a pillion anywhere in extreme comfort (minus some wind buffering for your passenger). For my money, there isn’t a better value on the ADV market. If you need a machine to get you to more uncivilized places expediently in comfort, this machine delivers. Just do some moderate weight training for about 2 weeks before you take any challenging off road treks to build up your strength in event you drop her ;-)

    The Super Ten has a good choice in the parallel twin, and Yamaha are masters at dry sump short stroke engines, the 1976 XT/TT bikes being the first ( I had a 1978 TT 500) it's the overdone silencer with the Cat converter, that makes serious weight on the left side, it should be on the right side to counteract the shaft drive weight, thought it's better than a BMW GS, which is a overated tank, with a out moded boxer engine, that sticks out so far you, need crash bars to protect it, sure it has horsepower, and are less reliable and expensive to own and fix, than BMW fanboys will ever admit too.

  • @azibizaable

    Just a small observation, as an owner of the bike, is good to know in general that has integrated braking system, which means when you pull the hand lever it will send some braking power to the rear. The rear brake, however, is independent until the force on the peg is harder than the hand lever. Its a heavy bike, I guess that is why they think at the braking system; it can easily be driven to soft-medium gravel roads. A lot of accessories are optional and with a already big pricetag it makes it very expensive at the end. I really appreciate all the testing which you have made so far. Excelent reviews and I hope that you can provide more details for all motorcycles.
    Your perspective of these reviews is coming straight from Mongolia :) most of us mortals back home are dreaming of your achievements !
    Big thanks!

    Love my 2013 Tenere! And for you US citizens, like me, 23 liters is just over 6 gallons!! And at roughly 45miles per gallon on the highway you're almost getting 300 miles before a refuel! I think the front view looks like a hoot owl.

    Hi pavlin, great review as usual....I trade in my 2018 Tracer GT with the Super Tenere 2018, and I am so happy...I dont mind the extra weight as you dont feel it while riding it, just when you do slow manouvring and maybe placing it on the center stand...but for the rest it is a joy....

    Very good review my friend, I enjoy your style of telling the viewers the facts and the high points of the bike. You talk about info that people can really use without a lot of extra talk that we don’t need. Also you rode on pavement and rough roads to show the capability of the bike. Excellent! After many years on Harley-Davidson this Yamaha is light to me!

    The power is one of the relative factors to like or not like the bike. For me, power is a very important factor. Even when I'm happy with a 300 cc for city commute and country side ride, for high way I need good response and power. I have a 900 cc touring (yamaha fj-09) bike with 115 HP and power is not only perfect, but very fun!

      agreed, but none of these "big" adventure bikes were built to go single tracking with. Those who do, do so at their own peril. Just watched a video of a guy on a BMW 1200 who tipped it over the edge of a 10 foot or so embankment on a "dirt bike trail ride" he should not have been there with this type of bike. Yes some can do it, should it be done, not really, but that's just my opinion.

    Hi Pavlin, ich stimme Dir voll und ganz zu. Ich denke, die Super Tenere ist derzeit das wohl beste Tourenmotorrad. Für Geländeeinsätze ist sie viel zu schwer. Leider hatte ich noch nicht das Vergnügen, eine 1200 Super Ten zu fahren. Meine gute alte TDM hat zwar "nur" etwas über 80 PS , aber immer genügend Kraft in allen Lebenslagen; mehr ist meiner Meinung nach für eine Tourenmaschine bzw. Reiseenduro auch gar nicht erforderlich.

    Very interesting. I think my lady would love that for pillion. And this is one of the few 1200 adventure bikes that I can get both feet down on easily. But the weight makes me nervous. Does not have to be off road. Many European cities have cobbled streets and tram lines which when wet I struggle with. If I saw an interesting single width road with a very poor surface I would be nervous to explore it on this heavy bike. And at for me that is why I ride. To explore. A great review though and nice to see someone honest enough to admit it is not necessary for 150 horsepowers.
    Happy travels

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  7 років тому

      Actually, the weigh of the motorcycle will be a problem only off road. On the road, any tip of road will be fine.

    • @teneretraveller8980

      Motorcycle Adventures I accept your point but I think a lot is confidence. For me this comes from the bike as I recognise I have only average ability and I am 5'9" and average not 1.85m and strong. Perhaps I need more weight training not running before/when I chose a bigger bike!
      Looking forward to seeing next review

    I have a Tenere. For touring it is awesome. I can come up to a standing stop with my feet on the pegs and can balance for quite sometime before putting my foot down. Off road is a bit more challenging but it is a big comfortable mile muncher that can go off road if you desire. With the 6 gallon gas tank you have plenty of range. That is a big deal in the western US. I owned two triumph 1200’s and I can tell you if you want a heavy hard to handle bike...the triumph is the one for you. Have over 40K miles on the triumphs in less than two years and you never feel totally at ease with that bike. The yamaha is awesome and have taken several two up trips and it handles it well. It is a great bike two up and got 50 MPG’s on all of my trips. Not bad!!! Lastly, Yamaha makes a dependable bike....thats a big deal. I have owned a lot of yamahas and think it is a great brand.

    Hey Man, I like your videos! I am currently in the market for a used touring bike but with 195cm in size my choice is limited and I can not afford to buy a brand new bike. What do you think of older 1990s bikes like 750 XTZ Super Tenere or old Africa Twins? DR Big? Can I still go on long trips with such an old bike or should I better go for a newer model?

    • @malcolmnuttall3165
      @malcolmnuttall3165 5 років тому

      So you can modulate your braking pressure, front wheel 60%, back wheel 40%,( No ABS), with ABS it changes to 80% front, 20% back, Honda Dual Combined Systems use double brake lines to balance the brake force.

    • @Nexus-6
      @Nexus-6 6 років тому

      The Super T is not top heavy. The engine is a stressed member and therefore mounted low and helping lower the center of gravity. Also the side mounted radiator allows the engine to be more forward mounted, and therefore has a longer swingarm. The longer swingarm gives more rear suspension travel and better rear wheel traction on and off road.

    Horsepower is just a game with manufacturers, always will be.
    Real world power is what is needed on the road, mid range torque is what is touring is all about, bit like fitting a quick shifter on a touring bike, just a gimmick.
    Begs the question, what is the difference between a touring bike and adventure touring, the line seems a little blurred now.

      You are right about the H.P. They all playing marketing games. There is no difference between touring and adventure bikes. Adventure you can make with any motorcycles, even with scooter.

    sory to ask...why u all need such a heavy bike to traveling.im been traveling from msia...to ..saudi only with my honda 250....

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  7 років тому +1

      Well, there is few reasons, first is to be able to cover long distances easy and second is to have long live of the engine. I already explain in one of my previous videos that the bike is just a tool. You can travel with almost anything, even bicycle.

      +Motorcycle Adventures for two personnes, cause maybe 660cc could be a bit weak for duo, you try both of them.

    Do you think that there is a common ground for this bike and her little sister? Or is "Tenere" in name just a marketing trick?

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  7 років тому

      There is just one common and this is Yamaha. They are totally different bikes. I think that both models have some pros and cons, but both use this nice marketing trick. I hope you will understand.

    • @humulunculus
      @humulunculus 7 років тому

      Do you mean that last 660 Tenere and the big one you have reviewed are just shadows of the old 750 Tenere's glory? In my opinion xt660z is an icon of expedition bikes and I think it might be a good idea to add her honest review to this set. It could give us interesting perspective to those high-end and expensive bikes. Anyway thanks for response!

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  7 років тому

      I did not like the old 750 Tenere, what I want to say is that they just use the nice name for selling their bikes. The new XT 660 Z is very good bike, right from the shop. With minimum upgrades you can transfer it to the ultimate adventure machine. It serve absolutely well and I already proof it. Yes, I will the proper riding review after I finish with the big bikes.

      That's what I wanted to hear! Few months ago I had Africa Twin ordered at a dealers but i canceled this order and bought second hand, 2009 little Tenere. I'm totally amazed by this bike. For money I saved I bought all equipment I needed and took part in proffesional off-road training and rest of savings Ican spend on my journeys. Thanks again for your reviews. I look forward for more. Ride safe!

      That's exactly what I planed to say to my subscribers for a final. Instead of paying for expensive bike, spend the money for travelling. I will use your comment in my video - if you don't mind.

    We both agree it's not suitable for rugged off road ridding because off over weight. How does it compare to KTM n BMW GS bikes? Pls make comparisons asap. Pls you'll love the gas tank cap n large windshield. The cons: looks like fat lady trying to climb slippery slope. Don't you agree! Why can't engineering n designers make slim n powerful bike for rugged n long journeys? How come they don't design bikes that solves these critical issues?

    My experience with this machine was disappointing I wanted to love it and call it my own, but it is chasing the GS 1200s, I think. A WR450F based street legal adventure machine makes more sense for me.

      Well thats a very good idea, because there are lots of people who put their hard earned cash into a one in a lifetime purchase only to get in wrong, and that is sad. I like your simple analysis of the machines especially in the way you talk about the basic stuff, like weight, comfort and usability in different scenarios. keep up the good work and look forward to many more of your videos, so I am better informed when I take the plunge into making a big investment into a bike when I retire in a year and a half. Oh and I see you have been near Gibraltar, where I am from, saw it in one of your photos, probably when you were in your way to Morocco. Did you come into Gibraltar?

    Hi Pavlin, i am a great admirer of almost every Yamaha bikes, but this 1200 Supertenere is ugly and clumsy. Sorry. Maybe it is a perfect bike, but it is almost as ugly as the 1200 GS and much to much heavy. Ride safe, Hans

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  5 років тому

      Well...if I ever decide to ride a heavy motorcycle, which I don't think I will, it will be this model. It has everything I need, but it is so heavy...

      @elendshuraglump3620 5 років тому

      Hi Pavlin, i suppose, that in a shorter or longer time you will pick the Tenere 700. In my opinion, it could be the perfect bike for you. 1. You are definitive a friend of Yamaha (me too), 2. It is not so extremely heavy and 3. has enough power. With some of your special modification ... perfect. Ride safe, Hans@@motorcycleadventures

    I suggest you change the location where you do your test rides. That road is full cyclists and has a speed limit of 30 km/h all the way through. You ride 60-90 km/h. You will kill someone one day.
