Skateboarding has a lot to do with how you feel, so just by having a shaped board(something different than a Popsicle deck) can mentally make the skateboarder either feel like he's 10times better, the same or even worse. Just like having new deck/shoes can when skating. Idk if that makes sense hopefully you get it...
like a wise man once told me skating is 90% commitment an 5% talent then he went on to say the other 5% bro why we still talking shut up an get in that board an commit already
Dude no way , I'm 45 and totally considering this. I miss skateboarding so much it was literally the best time of my life in the 80's and early 90's . I'm seeing lots of old dudes like myself coming back to skating and I to love these shaped boards. Anyways man did you start ? I'm digging Mike Vallelys Street Plant boards but also like some of the Dog Town reissue shapes . The one in this vid looks cool but I really like a board around 32×8.5 or 9 inches cause I'm 6ft3 got big feet also got dad gut😂 another good reason to skate, get in shape.
@@Airik1111bibles 43 and just got back on the board....go for it dude, it was the best time for me also and im bringing those good times back! just got a new set up (shaped deck, video up soon) cant wait to put it together. i got a few videos up so far, if your looking for inspiration check em out.
I think what really matters between shaped or popsicle boards is what you feel most comfortable on. But shaped boards are fun and a little different so that's cool to push around on for a while. A little change up here and there is always good and keeps things fresh.
I grew up with the shaped boards as they morphed into the popsicle boards we all see today. Judging by what you threw down in the video with the shaped board the only thing that really matters is good grip, concave, and a decent nose and tail. Would love to see you try and rip a deck from the 80s! I know Powell and Vision were throwing out some old school shapes, maybe even Santa Cruz, now that would be epic to see you ride one of those decks (thinking a Vision Gator or Gonz deck). Now that would be a video to watch!
Love a lot of wood under my feet . Started skating when 7.5 was god and wheels were bearing covers. Glad it's changed. Shout out to mike V and the Gonz for pushing creativity !
The tail gives more surface area allowing tre flips to have more time to react. I personally love tre flips on shaped boards you have a certain control to em that makes it really fun!
Good shit dude, I recently ventured into shaped board land for the first time this millennium. Came to the same results of pretty much the same. Looking down at a different shape can be inspiring so whatever keeps you hyped on skating. Much love dude...subscribed!
I think certain shapes work better for vert, bowl, transition etc and some work better for street but it is preference, whatever makes you feel more confident and comfortable.
I just started skating last summer and I ride shaped decks because of the look. I find they are more interesting as a visual with grip tape art and board design. Although I do not notice it affects my progression. I ride Welcome Decks! Love your channel, sick content!
ive noticed a subtle difference in my ollies with shaped boards because the extra little primo stall concave part , when i do the slide part of the ollie the board i noticed hooks on to my feet way easier there for my olllies feel effrotless. with the traditional , i do have to be a little more consciously aware if my feet what i need it to do. in conclusion i enjoy both but love shaped boards atm soo much.
Dale! This was an awesome video, please do more of these comparison videos! I have been watching your videos for a couple days but haven't subscribed but you just got my subscription after this and my daily view as well.
never even knew about shaped boards. you have lifted the Vail once again, good sir. seeing that I just started skating, I wonder if a shaped board would be any easier for a beginner? yourw awesome Dale! KEEP KILLING IT!
I love popsicles but im skating a welcome bunyip rn the nose is small and round and the tail is fat and square. It really took some getting use to but it's alot of fun and challenging. And i really feel it will make you a better skater skating shaped boards. Not like it will magically make you tre double but it will help you understand tricks better and how to make them work on different shaped boards. And in the end why the fuck not, after all skating is about having fun.
ditched my popsicle 2 years ago. skated welcome 8.8s for a year and just got an 8.275 shaped board for a while now and yea you are probably right. they take some getting used to but after that theyre way more fun and stable at high speeds but you can still do anything you could do on a normal board. mine were shaped similar to this guys tho. gonna try and get a random shape from welcome skateboards they have this deal for 35 bucks you pick the size they pick the shape. i dont think ill ever go back to popsicles.. at least for a while
Yeah I see that. I have my regular setup as well as an 8.7" Welcome cruiser setup and I personally can skate it almost exactly as my regular setup. I love both boards for different reasons. When I switch back to my regular setup I suppose tricks are a little "easier". I'm a believer that you can get used to pretty much any setup, and pretty much everything about any setup is personal preference
I stopped skating for almost 10 yrs. When I started again recently I switched to welcomes shaped boards , I honestly find it alot better but could just be me , and I dig the old school look
actually those shape boards came into style before the popsicle. they gave birth to the big nose then when they got slimmed down you got the popsicles 1988-1990 info
Shapes better for me on transition, ramps, or pools. I assume those popsicle type better on street? I grew up in the 80’s riding the Lucero/Grosso(RIP) shapes on ramps and parks.#🛹#RIPJeffGrosso
As an old guy (43) I grew up skateboarding on fish boards. I recently began skateboarding again about a month ago. I'm finding it difficult to get use to a symmetrical board. I ended up drawing an arrow facing forward on the griptape so I can see where my nose is. Otherwise they're not too much different feeling infer your feet. I'm currently riding a DGK "bounce" deck that only comes in size 8.36.
I just got my first shaped board I like it so far it’s got a really big nose and it helps me slide on it still catching up with old catalog stay rad shred till we die
I dunno man, I've switched to shaped decks over the last five years and I just like them better. I even dig a 7.5 in cruiser shape, as long as it has a popped nose too
i prefer a shaped board but im an old schooler,my first board was flat. i ride a Black Label Navarette guest model on street and a Z-flex master crafted Eric Dressen in the pool. They're both really sick. Its all personal preference think a persons style has alot to do with it. Popsicles seem to be better for more techy tricks.
I actually had a shapeboard from Heroin back when I was younger and I only realized it was shaped when I first skated , I was so hyped to get a new board I didnt even notice it was shape, I dont find much difference between the both shape decks but I prefer the regular skateboard
I recently got a welcome deck 8.25 about the same shape as that blue tile board. Only I bought it to use as a cruiser. I've never used it for skating it just seems like it should be used as a cruiser. Keep up the great vids
I literally thougth of that Brad Cromer Nollie Tre flip clip recently and am unable to find the part for it. Then I watched this (searching for Polar Skate Co. boards); somehow. The coincidence is amazing.
I'm a big boy with big feet, so I like big boy boards (preferably 8.75 - 9.0) companies usually make those sizes exclusively in shaped decks, but I am excited when I find a nice popsicle
my two cents, let's not forget that skating always was and always will be for fun. If you ain't having fun then go play video games or whatever. Popsicles are all the same. Hence they are called popsicles. And you all know what happens when everybody is skating the same thing, it gets boring. Doesn't matter if the graphic is the bomb since you are going to look down at it and you will see always the same shape. Now, shaped boards, as he said, have a more fun surfy feeling, without the need of riding a Boeing 747 like a longboard is. You wanna go full oldskool? Plenty of re-issues nowadays. You wanna keep it modern? Plenty of brands that are getting into shaped boards. But definitely, there is no need to be skating the same thing like all the kids in the skateparks. I'm 41 myself, and while I don't want to get a re-issue since they are pretty expensive, still have a fistful of choices around to express my way of skating starting by a shape that I like, and feel comfy with. PS:boy what a book :D lol sorry and keep up the stokedness
Nice three flip there dood. I say this. Why must we all be the same? Introduce....individualism in skateboarding 2019! My wife happens to love my shape!!
To accurately compare these you should be using 2 brand new boards, and the same trucks, wheels and bearings on each board. Also you should skate one board for a day, and the other the next day, as well as skating the same spots both days. It might take longer to film and edit but the resolults will be on point.
Just a side note that back in the 80's EVERYBODY used a shaped deck. From what I remember the standard 80's board had soft, and wide wheels, a really wide shaped pattern, and slide rails.
JakeSnake07 you're right except for the soft wheels. wheels where 95-98a back then, which isn't soft, it's hard. it's not rockhard like 100a or.even 85 b and up wheels, but it's far from soft either. 86, 83, 80, 78a... that's soft. 95a isn't soft, you can't really deform a 95a wheel, neither with the finger nor when riding it. just to make things correct ;)
I've always thought that odd shaped wide boards feel more comfortable on ramps compared to the regular popsicle shaped boards but it feels different and not the same that I'm use to
I pop higher on my square tailed board too. I think it's because there's more surface area to snap my foot down on and I don't have to be as precise as I do with a popsicle board.
It all depends more upon the individual skater than it does the actual deck shape but everyone's different. The popsicle has now been the industry standard for about 25 years now and most people nowadays are probably going to prefer it overall, though some skaters like myself will prefer at least a few different specific shapes based upon their own unique individual skating styles, and what feels best to them when riding. The popsicle is for me is NOT my favorite, though since it's the modern standard shape,I can ride it just fine. My favorite deck was of a unique design that was a Matt Rodriguez pro model from stereo skateboards that I dubbed the "peanut" because it's shape was not like a peanut, but rather the opposite of what the shape of a peanut is like and I still have it stored away somewhere. Unfortunately,I broke the deck while skating on it,though it's still together as one complete piece with a huge crack almost through the center and I could skate that deck better than any other board I ever owned. It's a damn shame that shape disappeared and was never made again by Stereo Skateboards or any other skateboard company since.
Open source skateboards can recreate it, rad rat has a video about the process with the owner and they have their own UA-cam channel. Check them out and contact the!
Hello, pretty recently I bought myself independent 139‘s and I skate a 8.25 inch board and it works fine for me I didn’t really feel a difference to skating an 8 or 8.1. but now I want to upgrade to a 8.5 or 8.6 (a shaped board with the widest point being 8.6‘‘) is that possible with my current trucks or will I get wheel bite and all that stuff?
I got a shaped board thinking it would be fun and no different, but it ended up bugging me. I think it was all physiological, but I went back to Popsicle after that.
the shaped board i would imagine being nicer for hills than the 'normal' board. better pockets to have your feet in doing slides and more surf-like turns and curves. Try an old school tricks comparison with the shaped and normal board? boneless, old school kickflip etc.
I think shaped boards make me skate better because they make you happy with the constant variation in board shape and if I'm happy when I look down at my feet I skate better

I got a shaped board thinking it would be fun and no different, but it ended up bugging me. I think it was all physiological, but I went back to Popsicle after that.
How times have changed, back in the 80's early 90's shaped boards were the normal.
after my board that i have now breaks im gonna try a shaped board, they look fun to ride!
the shaped board i would imagine being nicer for hills than the 'normal' board. better pockets to have your feet in doing slides and more surf-like turns and curves.
Try an old school tricks comparison with the shaped and normal board? boneless, old school kickflip etc.
Do you think that you could use the Dogtown Murray Pool deck for most of the tricks? It's oddly shaped and a pool deck so idk.
love ur vids. keep it up. this is my first video i watched on ur channel and i think ur channel is awesome
I think shaped boards make me skate better because they make you happy with the constant variation in board shape and if I'm happy when I look down at my feet I skate better
I got a welcome because of this assessment video thanks dale
Youre welcome!

That shaped board is sick
