Maleeva hit some incredible passing shots , she took the pace off the ball which threw Martina off . Maleeva kept the ball deep to keep Martina away from the net . By hitting soft deep balls she gave herself time to track Martina’s return . If you hit hard to Martina the ball comes back sooner and have less time to set up for passes. Martina here is flat footed because the ball was not hit hard , she needed to stay on the balls of her feet - she was rope a doped ( Ali phrase ) . She got lulled into not moving well . Compare her form here to a year later in beating Graf in SF .
That match point was a classic example of how Martina had a tendency to wrap the racquet round the ball on her forehand when under pressure. Some of the other players knew that and really went after her forehand. If you watch a lot of Steffi Graf's matches against Martina, she really tried to break down Martina's forehand.
Thank you so much for the video! I've been waiting for almost 28 years to see that match! Great performance from Manuela, she totally deserved to win that night. Nice hug from Maggie at 42:57, who won the Junior title that year!
I've never seen Manuela so composed and calm. She knew she had a chance to win this match. As for Martina, her serve let her down and she seemed slow at the net. But it was Manuela really winning this match with those deep lobs and sharp passing shots.
I remember lots of people saying at the time that winning her ninth Wimbledon took something out of Martina emotionally. Once she'd achieved that, the rest of 1990 was an anticlimax for her - she didn't win another tournament after Wimbledon. Interestingly, she also lost to Manuela in the tournament after the US Open in tokyo. Here, she just doesn't have her usual fight. Also worth adding that Martina's knee injury was catching up with her and she had surgery later that year, skipping the tour finals in Madison Square gardens.
Huge emotional letdown after the W win and MNs knees were trash by this point. Maleeva is a fine player but needed an out of form MN to take this match.
I was so happy for Manuela. She started changing her racquets and her training in 1988 trying to step up her game. She even started hitting out more and coming forward to the net. It cost her some matches for a couple of years. So this was a nice payoff for her sacrifices. However, Martina proved prophetic when she observed how happy and satisfied Manuela was with this win. She knew she wouldn’t be able to put this behind her in time for the next match. And Manuela would lose a winnable match against Mary Joe in the next round.
Much obliged for the post! I never forgot that out-of-nowhere/jackknife running forehand from Manuela at appx 41:13, two points from the match, wow!! Would also love to see Manuela's thrilling 3-set win over Martina in Switzerland (I forget the year), Manuela's husband's home country.
There used to be English commentary versions but they appear to be gone. My all time favourite player. It's been great to finally get to see matches that I'd only seen results in tennis magazines. Back in the day it was the only way to follow tennis. The tennis big wigs are so unimaginative with their history. I'd re watch whole tournaments if I could. It's these wonderful fans posting matches that is the only way to re-live the olden days. Great post. Wish I spoke Deutsch.
