  • How many carbs in a diabetic diet should a diabetic eat a day in their diabetic diet? Dr. Ahmet Ergin will explain exactly how many carbohydrates should a diabetic eat per day in their diabetic diet Although the ideal amount of carbohydrate intake in type 2 diabetic diet is uncertain, individualizing goals is the key. Dr. Ergin will give real-life examples to help understand how many carbs should you eat personally. As long as a patient with diabetes can maintain reasonable glucose control as well as a healthy weight, the amount of carbohydrates does not necessarily matter as much. Some people can do this with 30 g of carbs per meal, and some people can eat up to 75 g per meal depending on their activity level, age, gender, and duration of diabetes type 1 or type 2. For sedentary individuals, we do not recommend eating more than30-45 g of carbs per meal.

Results: We included 13 studies in a systematic review, followed by a meta-analysis using pertinent data. Among the 440,669 people that were included in 11 cohort studies, 27,887 (6.3%) cases of diabetes were documented. The risk of incident diabetes among individuals with a low-carbohydrate diet was not significantly different from that of individuals with a high-carbohydrate diet: the pooled RR was 1.03 (95% CI, 0.91-1.16).
Conclusion: Low-carbohydrate diets did not show any benefit on the risk of diabetes.

Here's my story. Never had a doctor and I'm 58, I had to go to the hospital for a surgery. I weighed 253 lbs/5' 10 inches tall. They did blood work, come to find out, my A1c was 11.3. No wonder I felt like crap all the time. Any way, I went on an almost no carb diet, I started eating steak, fish, pork, chicken, eggs, and cottage cheese for my dinner for the most part every day and maybe a couple of cookies for dessert. Well, it's been 3 months as of next week, and I have lost 42 lbs. and my A1c is 4.9 now! I feel/and look so much better. Hopefully I can stop taking the Metformin soon my doctor said. P.S, I stopped drinking beer ever night after I got home from work too. I believe that is helping a whole lot as well. Good luck to everyone that has diabetes, you can control it if you really try..... Mark.

Thanks mark I am a beer lover and have 3 or 4 beers after work but I do try to eat healthy like you a lot of fish chicken and some red meat at times. I also try to include some green vegetables and fresh fruits My only weakness is beer. Another one of my down falls is not exercising. I am not overweight and my last blood sugar reading was boarder-line. I did not know beer had that much of a side effect. Well looks like I need to cut that out as well.

      I'm T2 diabetic
      I take Metformin 1000 mg / day
I dropped my A1C too, and I'm not fat
My diabetes has been controlled for a year
Guess what ! I was not allowed to stop Metformin 👋
When I followed comments like yours and stopped Metformin for 3 days ,
      My blood sugar spiked

You are one amazing Doctor, you truly understand the human mind & what a lot of people are capable of doing to change their bad habits, just a week ago my hubby at the age of 71 has been diagnosed with T2D his weight is 84kg height 5’ 8”, so now I have the struggle to get him to understand serving sizes & how carbs impact his life. So now it’s out with the scales, measuring spoons & measuring cups for him to visualise portion size, it’s not easy when one just eats for 71 years whatever they feel is ok. Thank you from Australia you are helping me so much & I’m very happy I found & subscribed to your channel ❤️

I have great respect for Dr. Ergin who does not subscribe to the conventional mainstream recommended diet for diabetics. I have just watched a UA-cam video with a dietitian who advocates that diabetics eat 40% of their calories in carbs. They include every type of food including donuts, muffins and fruit. The only thing she adjusts for, is the weight of the individual which she uses to calculate the total calories he/she should consume. Dr. Ergin, in the other hand, takes into consideration so many more factors that affect an individual’s health and life situations. The fact that he is also a board certified MD, gives me added confidence in his advice. Thank you Dr. Ergin!

When your MD doesn’t listen to you, doesn’t talk much with you and generally only prescribes more Rx “remedies “ run and research for a new endocrinologist! I met a patient in our endocrinologist’s office who drove from North Carolina to Atlanta and stayed two nights in a hotel four times a year to get the care she needed. This is your health on the line, so ask around and Google endocrinologists who have great reviews and whose office may also participate in medical trials. Our guy travels all over the world to interact with other endocrinologists. ALL of his PAs and NPs are top notch, as well. Five people told us to take our boys to his office when their pediatric endocrinologist was just making them sicker. Their exam and treatment that first visit was enlightening and showed me what a great thing it was that we were able to get my boys into his office. Now one of them works in another state and he drives 8 to 9 hours each way for each of his checkups.

    This video was pretty interesting.
How about counting carbs per week to feed just exercise?
    For example:
    3 walks/day 1km each (100 calories each) 2,100 calories
    2 hikes/week 5km (500 calories each) 1,000 calories
    3 weight lifting days/week (150 calories each) 450 calories
    Total sports calories: 3,550
So: roughly 500 calories per day for physical activity
divide 500 by 4 (calories per gram carbohydrates) brings you to: 125g Total Carbs per day!
A 5 days/week gym routine would work out to: 30 - 45 depending on the workout intensity. It could be more of course for those hard hitters.
Now we can work out our other requirements to figure fat and protein intake....
It would be very helpful if the kind doctor could comment on this :)

You are so encouraging and I appreciate all your videos. I was referred to Cascade Health for education and they have been super helpful. See the diabetic nurse twice a year and dietitian twice a year. They also have a support group. This came to a halt when Covid hit. I had lost 60 lbs doing low carb then gained 30 back🙃. Things are back to somewhat normal and now starting again. My AlC was down to 5, now 7😞. Was on Janumet and Trulicity then had a total reverse shoulder replacement and took me off the Janumet. So with all that I am starting again with low carb and back to Cascade Health. Thank you for the encouragement.

I was on fast and long acting Insulin both 3 time a day for 3 years. My PC took me off off insulin a month 1/2 ago and prescribed Jardiance 10 mg mornings. I weighed 152 and about 2 week's after I noticed loosing weight every day until I noticed my clothes was getting loose till on Xmas Eve my pants fell down. Mind you I'm 70 as of 12/3/21. I've lived in a senior community not a lot of moving around for 8 years. I started weighting every morning to be 2 or 3 lbs less every day and got down to 130 and then it goes up and down every day by 1 or 2 lbs. I'm not a large lady, never have been. My PC said it was a part of aging. That maybe but I didn't understand the rapid weight lose. I've lost my muscle mass and thining bones. I'm worried about thining. I feel like I'm wasting away. My blood sugar and blood pressure is fine. What's going on it was not till I got off the insulin that weight started coming off. Thank You

Hi Doctor, I'm prediabetic. I had reduced my carb intake to lower my blood sugar and A1C. Subsequently, my weight went down and now I'm too skinny 😟. In order to slowly regain some of my weight back, I will need to increase my calories. My blood sugar readings will probably go up. My question... Is there a "general target blood sugar range", 2 hours after we start a meal?

I was prediabetic. I strived to keep my BG 1 hr after a meal at no more than 140 mg/dl. On most days, it was no more than 120-130 and less or at 100 at 2hrs. I did not worry about calories. All my life I avoided excess fats and overeating. So, I have been small and had no weight problems. I have lost more weight than I would like to, but I have managed to stabilize it by consuming 200 -300 extra calories from good fats. I also stop doing the weekend OMAD and only do it once a month. I still do the 2 meals a day plan with an occasional also low-carb snack. This works for me, but you start this journey like an experiment because every metabolism and needs are different. You need to find what works for you. But, one thing is universal keeping BG well controlled most days.

I got diabetes in my pregnancy and it stayed. 8 months ago I gave birth and my hba1c is 5.9 currently. Morning sugars are around 105-115, sometimes after meal i get 250 2 hours pp. But sometimes i eat the same thing and it is not more than 130 2 hours pp. Usually my numbers are higher in the evening. I eat 44 grams of carbs in pasta in the morning and 2 hours pp it comes to around 130. I eat the same thing in the evening and its much higher. Can you tell me what the problem can be? To mention i am 29 years old, 57kg, 172cm tall.. I am not much active but when I start working in few months, I will be enough active. How many carbs per meal and snack can I eat? And do I require any medication? Thank you

Sugar MD, I know im late to this video but I just recently came across your channel do forgive mer. I know most states have the grocery banned Aldi's, so diabetics can get a bread that has zero net carbs, a burger bun with 2 best carbs and just recently they came out with a bagel. I know these are considered keto products, but they work for diabetics too, don't they? I use so many keto recipes from UA-cam that have made eating a pleasure again. I even make my own candy. It's delicious and only 1 carb per piece. I know keto isn't always the best diet but the food sure got my blood sugar under control after 15 years of fighting.

I am 37 and have been type 1 for 36yrs. I'm generally quite active. I've found that if I've had an active day my insulin sensitivity almost quadruples. So does the rate of absorption. Therefore I will only have 10-20g to avoid hypos as insulin reduction alone doesn't work. I'm on a closed loop pump. Transversely, if I'm inactive and eat a large carb meal I can still go hypo as my body can digest the carbs too slowly. It's very hard to find the right balance.
I've also found the glycemic index to be a bit of myth, for example brown rice and pasta causes a glucose spike just as fast as white does. I try to get my carbs from vegetables where possible

I think the answer is always eat as little carbs as possible! You don’t needs carbs, also when you have a lot of exercise. Your liver can make all the carbs you need. Look at the low carb athletes and at the marathon runners, also prof. Dr. Tim Noakes, a sport doctor and also a marathon runner himself. You can exercise all you want on fat burning when you are fat adapted.

One important item that is missing from most videos(including this video) is that Type 2 Diabetes happens to most because of a poor diet with way too many sugar and starches, and dont forget processed foods. People this can be reversed with strict carbohydrate restriction and time restricted eating. No one ever got obese eating meat and veggies. Your body will only let you eat so much of fat and protein. However, carbs are another thing altogether. Carbs for many have no off switch in the brain. There are many reasonable substitutions for all types of foods now. Your liver makes all the glucose you need and many athletes can run on fat instead of sugar. Stop the carbs and stop the diabetes and prediabetes.

I think the keto/ almost zero (healthy) carb is dangerous. I have done this and the mental fog and lack of energy tells me that you need some carbs. I have one slice of whole wheat/multigrain toast in the morning with eggs and a 3 oz portion of breakfast meat. Only a slight snack for lunch and dinner is a protein and plenty of veggies with maybe a 3/4 cup of quinoa which really doesn’t raise my glucose. Eating like this, my blood sugars do not go above 10.0 an hour after eating. I am a former Chef so food knowledge and prep comes naturally to me. It’s important to remember to choose veggies like garlic and onions, cruciferous veggies, and bell peppers which have a lot of vitamin C. I usually stay under 50 grams of carbs per day, and that is only healthy carbs, no refined carbs.

Did you say type 11/2 diabetic? I hate diagnosing myself but can't help but feel Dr.s put us in this situation. I feel I am the type 11/2. My Dr. that originally diagnosed me stated as fact I became type 1, this was almost 10 years ago. My current endocrinologist treats my diabetes as type 2. We did a peptide test which she guesses I am type 2, yet admits the small insulin trace found in the test could be from my shots not my pancreas. So I am still in the unknown. I am 64, not over weight, in fact I feel the weight I lost, from 230 lbs to 140 lbs was extreme and have managed to get back to 185-190, but cannot get beyond that. I tried keto and low carb diets and felt worse and even strange nausea. I am active for the most part but do not exercise beyond that as it seems I burn all my energy working. I have found I am living on the edge but surviving at around 70 carbs total daily, many days even less because I feel trapped between my levels raising because of eating yet fasting and hurting my energy levels by not enough carbs. My a1c's have been over at least 8 but as much as 13.7 the entire 9 years. I take 2 insulin's, only med is metformin. Never any type 2 medications as no doctors dare to try them with me in case I am 11/2.

@@Nourriturecosmetics Yes, had a c-peptide test. Inconclusive answers as I stated above. Very small level of insulin in test results, so my endocrinologist who I am seeing gave me a 2 sided result. She said she guesses type2 because of the trace of insulin found in the test and yet in the next breath throws what seemed to me a disclaimer that the trace of insulin found in the test she could not be sure if that was from my pancreas or my shots. So, still don't know.

Look at the carb content of your food or ingredients you cook with. Deduct fiber and sugar alcohols as your body doesn’t process those the same as empty or sugar carbs. So if something has 20g of carbs, but 12 grams of fiber, then it’s 20-12= 8g net carbs (net carbs are those processed into sugars in the body and raising glucose levels.

Would it be best to have 20-30g per meal for total of 60 grams of total carbs a day? I avoid refined sugar, bread , grains . Sugar is mainly from low carb vegetables &fruit. Berries, peach and plum during this time of year.

I was told 40-60 carbs per meal. I watch carbs and sugar content if sugar content is high don't eat it I do have a pasta meal once a week isn't out the question. I eat bread once a day and eat rice maybe once a week. I work 12 hours a day + I eat alot of half sandwiches mixture of alot protein and cheese and a half of bun mixture. I don't take insulin anymore because lack of health coverage i test my blood twice a day I'm normally 130 in the morning and 200-250 after meals rarely over that I was 658 when I diagnosed. So my lifestyle changes do work. Might be not be for everyone. 100% recommended it works for me! Everyone's body is different.

It is too many carbs for you. 20-30g daily will be ok. You need to control your blood sugar in 1 hour after each meal and you will see what is good and not good for you. 200-250 after meal is too high. Rise and brerad are terrible food, it is better to forget them. Read Dr Bernstain Diabetes Solution book.

@@UR4LL too little carbs for me I've tried the low carbs. I finally asked my doctor he said 40 -60 carbs per meal is OK 👍 I have reduced it to 30 -50 g per meal. It works for me. Remember not everyone is the same

@@mctraveller8539 Our bodies dont need carbs. Your 90-150 g daily is much better than 300-400g of the most of people. If your phisical activity is high your carbs consumption is ok for you.

@@UR4LL I agree but feeling tired all time doesn't make me good either. I eat lots of protein for energy I've tracked my carb intake it's actually averages less than 100g per day rarely going over 80g
I cut the sugar 95% of out my diet . Small amounts of hidden sugar in most food. But when I do eat sugary food I can't believe how sweet it is and I only eat a 1/4 piece of cake or 1 cookie . It's been hard trying rewire eating habits I have had since I was a kid. I'm not at my best nor am I completely neglecting it

If diet and exercise can bring your BG down consistently you may not need to take medication.

I'm on a whole slew of meds for diabetes (metformin, glimepiride, gemfibrozil, lantus insulin, and lispro insulin. I think my depression has alot to do with why I can't get it under control or at least if I can get there, I can't keep it there for very long before it goes right back up. I eat more sweets and processed foods than I ever should too but I think it's also more about my depression. I've been a known diabetic for 12 years and I'm 50 years old. I don't know what the hell to do. I just can seem to stick to anything good for very long. I feel alone and hopeless.

Lower your A1C below 7 eating salads with avocado greens, tomatoes, peppers. Don’t eat any bread, potatoes, pasta, rice . Drink water , walk 3 times a day 30 min . No sugar, sweets or juices. You can have keto sweet with 1g sugar and low carb occasionally.
