I've only been playing magic for less than a year, and you're definitely helping me learn strategy. I didn't think I'd start playing mtg at 30, but you make it approachable (and honestly I'm too intimated to go to FNM at a game store). So genuinely, thanks for putting out the quality content and giving us all something to do during endless quarantine.
Your story is 100% my own experience with MTG. Started playing in Feb 2020 at 30. Have watched CGB almost every day since learning strategy. Only play Arena as can't face going into a store where I don't know anyone lol.
Same here as well. Played as a kid, maybe 10-12 and had no idea what I was doing. A couple years ago a friend tried to get me back into it and I got absolutely thrashed at FNM. Post quarantine he told me about Arena. Being able to up my card collection without hundreds and hundreds of dollars invested (and occasional public humiliation) was great. A few months in I started looking for videos to help my game, and no one that I’ve found comes close to the insight provided by CGB. Lots of entertainers, few educators.
I welcome all aggro that makes white boardwipes worse. White boardwipes are way too braindead in mtg. Black adds something to the game, white is just "hurr durr 4 mana boom"
I have only been playing magic for less than a year; I started when the pandemic shut-down happened. I started watching your videos a couple months ago, and I always watch the end! I subscribed right away because I like how you explain your plays. I look forward to the wrap-up and sometimes I skip a couple of the games if I don't have time. I mostly play aggro, because it's usually a faster game and I like to be able to fit a match into a smaller time frame. I never play mono-red, so I relate with you about that. I have always been intrigued by control decks but I could never fully understand how they work without your explanations, so thank you, and keep up the good work! (Because of you, I was inspired to design a control that actually works quite well.)
Basri Ket is for the control matchups. Crokeyz sides it in, and greatly punishes the lack of board presence with the game winning emblem. From the games you've shown us today, not a single one was control, so naturally, he didn't really shine.
i was thinking the same thing. he's basically playing a pre-boarded mono white for vs control. then he matched against all aggro and says the anti control elements (castle and basri) are the weakest cards.
@@doormatt72 to be fair, he is talking about how the deck should be rated in best of one, where there are few control decks, so naturally cards which are only good against control are weak, whereas cards like Hallowblade which is also good against other decks are much stronger. You are still making a good point though.
@@stefanrabenstein3753 for sure, i noticed that as well. he actually got a pretty good snapshot of the meta. especially for day 1 when everyone was trying to rank up quickly. but there are times when more controlling decks take an upswing and then basri and castle become more important.

Congratulations on the 700 streak and reaching 100,000 subs. “Shuffler is fine.” In University-level mathematics classes that cover probability, professors will do an exercise where the class is divided into two groups. Each member of group 1 has to flip a coin one hundred times and record the results on a sheet of paper. Then the sheets are shuffled and taped up to the board at the front of the classroom. Then the professor has to guess which sheets came from group one and which from group two. TL;DR: The shuffler is actually fine. Human brains are bad at understanding probability.
I'll believe the shuffler is fine when someone supplies at least a few hundred games worth of data and appropriate analysis showing the distributions do not deviate to a statistically significant degree from true random. While it's true that humans are often quite poor at intuitively understanding statistics, an infinite number of random events will inevitably produce every possible permutation of the set, so it's utterly trivial to point out that any anecdotal evidence people offer that the shuffler is broken does not definitively prove it is broken, but by the same token, the mere possibility that the outcome was produced randomly does not prove that it was produced randomly.

How does Shadows' Verdict work out against Rogues or Ruin Crab for you? Can you pull it off or does it get countered? I'm looking for an anti-Rogues deck and haven't seen anything that looks reliable yet.
@@daviddewidt5261 not especially well, honestly. The casting cost is too much for rogues. By the time you get the mana to cast it they've got drown in the loch waiting. Similar with mono red... You're usually dead by the time you can cast it. It works best against mono white weenie because they need to build up their board presence and get counters going, and it tears through Alseid of Life's Bounty and can even pick off Heliod if he's activated. There is good a reason most people don't main deck SV. It fits in my Orzhov Ugin deck, though, so I'm one of the dummies that does.
I don't really make comments on magic videos, but in this case I'll make an exception. Your content is awesome, genuinely a cut above the rest. Love the mix of confidence, humility, and especially the honesty - the latter being such a lonely word. And in that spirit I must admit that Air Supply was one of the first cassette's I ever purchased - so maybe I was inspired. Whatever the case, and whether you see this or not. You keep doing you and I'll keep watching.
I'd probably run 2 Heliods and 2 shadowspears in place of the basri. The deck build is solid on life gain, both of those would only support it. Maybe a felidar retreat for the Angel, possibly 2 if you feel like the lurrus isn't pulling it's weight. (Personally I often find it as a "kill it immediately" kinda card, so hard to judge it's impact. Weird card I have grown to like is beloved princess. Solid lifelink and neat ability to avoid big blockers, especially if pumped up with counters. Anyways, great video and thanks for the effort. Love your stuff and enjoy your passion!
Cool kid here. Loved the discussion at the end about the cuts. I'm starting to wonder what I would put in as replacements. I like the deck. I prefer the aggro model over the lifegain model in white. Maybe some more pumps? Maybe some more protection? More Lurrus probably.
Crafted mono white yesterday. I only had enough rare crafts to make one deck and it really does seem tier 1 with good match ups vs everything except extinction event and Ugin.
It is too often a problem of patience, whether it is to play control in a right way or to watch the video until the end. I have decided to take the time and hope you all do it too, otherwise you won't find out what you might miss ;-) It is worth to be patient
Hey CGB thanks for the content, really helpful for my mono white game strategy. I’ll be trying removing basri and legion angel, will let you know how it works in future videos. 👍🏻👍🏻
Heliod > Basri Heliod doesn't need support to stick around and can reliably help you come back from sketchy situations. Basri is a win-more who can help you speed up the snowball of a game you're already winning but rarely secures something you were struggling to come back from. Also don't underestimate the power of a turn two mazemind tome to make sure you hit your turn 3 and 4 land drops. Lurrus is underestimated in this deck but works best when you have that one extra land to sac a bounty or bring back a doggo while also playing a 3 drop on the same turn to inch ahead. 3 heliod 3 lurrus 3 linden 3 skymaul And if you're facing a lot of glass casket/banishing light: 3 skyclave apparition Also I like legion angel but I've never run the hushbringer so ill have to try it.
As far as I understand you'd replace the four copies of Castle Ardenvale with four extra Plains. Does anyone have a suggestions what to replace the Legion Angel, the Crawling Barrens (probably another Plains?) and the four copies of Basri Ket with?
I’ve played versions of this way too much. Right now I’d this list thus: run 2x Basari Ket, 2x Lurrus, 3x Hushbringer leaving 2 spots for auditioning: trying 2x Elspeth atm, but a 4th hush and third lurrus might be better. As the mana goes, it’s irritating how little it matters. If you have them I’d put 3 castles and a crawling, but the castles are so seldom used I’d never craft them. On the other hand being mono you’ll almost never have to play the castle tapped either. I use the crawling marginally more often but in this type of deck, 99/100, if you have mana to pump into it you’re already out of gas and probably scooping soon.
Grats on 700 in a row. I know I look forward to eating everything you put out here at work, makes my day muuuuuch faster and more enjoyable. I appreciate the hard work 👍
Mono white aggro and mono white Yorion are my fave meta and off-meta decks in the format. Thank you for trying to make Basri good, so sad he never really panned out.
Your esper deck, I think it was the last you did, has a 70% for me in over 40 games. I only made slight changes but it is really good against most decks right now.
I actually think this is at most a funof in *this* deck. It is conditional (you need some way to gain life, i.e. sufficient power on lifelink creatures and a board state where they can actually attack), vulnerable (your opponent can 2 for 1 you by removing the creature you enchant, it doesn't even need to be instant speed) and doesn't do much the turn you play it (only a few counters *after* your attack). Maybe I'm underestimating how much protection and lifelink this deck has, but it feels to me like the card is only good if you were already in a very good position to begin with. I could maybe see it in a black white deck with 4 Lurrus and 4 Calls in order to finish games out after you make a Lurrus stick?
Castle ardenvale is there to help against control, after all eventually they'll run out of removal and that's when you attack with a token equipped with maul to deal those last points of damage
I’d like to see the percentage of scoops simply because they look across the table and see your gamertag. I wouldn’t want to be them. Keep up the great work! CKC
I like Basri Ket alot in combination with the Proliferate mechanic (e.g. Grateful Apparition, Karns Bastion). Sadly those rotated out but i still like to play those in historic.
Can I interest you in a 62% WR at standard events after playing 87 matches? I'm mostly kidding I didn't play it in like 2 weeks and I think the meta switched a bit, but it was really good for grinding gold. Now kidding aside what do you believe to be a big enough sample size to put the label of consistent?
Wow, I thought Basri would work. Kinda like enigmatic incarnation; it can work, probably won't, but if you try. But incarnation works! Credit to Absurd Heroine for the idea, but I turned it into a full combo deck, keruga and all.
I can finally hit Diamond rank thanks to CGB being popular. All I have to do is build a janky tier 5 weirdo deck that just so happens to perfectly counter all the netdecking nobrainers bending the meta. Careful to build a new deck every few days as he releases new content. Easy money! Thanks CGB!
Win rates based videos are dangerous. When I started playing I fell in these traps. The worst is when you lose your hard owned wildcards to craft some crappy mithic because of them. I’m still here because CGB honestly discusses the cards and the deck (see Basri in this video e.g.) . Entertainment + knowledge work better in the long run. thank you and keep it up!!!
So I just wanna point out that Basri Ket is actually pretty decent and a little underrated. I think you weren't able to get much out of him because by the time you got him, your board state was either already decent enough or not fully built yet. But with that being said if you can get his ult off then it makes it very difficult for your opponents to catch up.
The problem with win rates is they are contextual but usually presented out of context. Any experienced magic player can win against the unexpected players in Platinum - in order to reach Platinum T4 you have to have a winrate of 34% or higher (winning in Gold gives you 2 points while losing takes 1 away), every body and their dog can reach that. With a 66% win rate against a player that has a 34% win rate you are exactly average.
I’m consistently delighted with Hushbringer in this deck...ruins so many plans with her little conceited red-glow-shhhh. After further tweaking I’m convinced that basari is great AS A 1 OF...Maybe two if the meta gets more control as it will as the season continues. His emblem wins the game maybe 9/10 times). Replaced by a full 3-4 Lurries. Keep in mind he’s often a 4 mana play (or even 5 mana if you need to Rez an Alesid and leave one open). But with HUSHER he gives rouges and anything with non-exile removal fits. My only question now is legion angel: it’s awkward as hell...but this deck badly needs card advantage especially with hallowblade. God send mono white card draw.
CGB I am it was a hard year for you. Our generation is a highly critical one. I even find myself picking apart movies, content, ect. It take guts to be a creative and or a content creator our society doesn't give a lot of respect and doesn't know how hard it is. So for my part I apologize if I have made hurtful comments, IE the Christmas Suit. You and The Professor are bold enough to get away with wearing flashy clothing like that. I hope this year is better for you than the last. I have always loved your salty red content. I will say this in regards to monored in standard though: They are the litmus test for standard. If you come out for instance with a four color card in standard and monored can't gain any ground you've broken the format. I'm not saying WotC would ever do that but if they did, it would be a good indicator.
Whoa, 13:00 -ish, putting two Mauls on the Aspirant. I've been conditioned so much that the concept of opponent not having removal is impossible for me to conceive.

I've been watching your videos for over a year and I love them and I hope you keep doing what you're doing
Congrats on the 100k man, well deserved.
Cool kid here. Loved the discussion at the end about the cuts. I'm starting to wonder what I would put in as replacements. I like the deck. I prefer the aggro model over the lifegain model in white. Maybe some more pumps? Maybe some more protection? More Lurrus probably.
Fencing Ace is really good in this shell, as well as Heliod, Sun-Crowned
Crafted mono white yesterday. I only had enough rare crafts to make one deck and it really does seem tier 1 with good match ups vs everything except extinction event and Ugin.
It is too often a problem of patience, whether it is to play control in a right way or to watch the video until the end. I have decided to take the time and hope you all do it too, otherwise you won't find out what you might miss ;-) It is worth to be patient
Hey CGB thanks for the content, really helpful for my mono white game strategy. I’ll be trying removing basri and legion angel, will let you know how it works in future videos. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for making more people play this, as a dimr controll player I destroy mono white with extinction events (;
Comment for the algorithm. "Win rates are a lie". Your honesty is what got you where you are. No weakness in this dojo!
Heliod > Basri
Heliod doesn't need support to stick around and can reliably help you come back from sketchy situations.
3 heliod
3 lurrus
3 linden
3 skymaul
And if you're facing a lot of glass casket/banishing light:
3 skyclave apparition
Also I like legion angel but I've never run the hushbringer so ill have to try it.
Congrats on your 700th video on a row! Keep'em coming!
700 videos in a row is a lot!! Congrats and great perseverance!
Congrats on 100K subs dude!
Hey @CovertGoBlue Is that Battle for Wesnoth soundtrack !?!?
As far as I understand you'd replace the four copies of Castle Ardenvale with four extra Plains. Does anyone have a suggestions what to replace the Legion Angel, the Crawling Barrens (probably another Plains?) and the four copies of Basri Ket with?
I'd put 1 sentinel's eyes, since you can cast it also from the grave and a heliod sun's crowned or whatever is his name.
@@ChristianIce Good one! Gonna try 4 Heliod, Sun-Crowned and 2 Sentinel's Eyes. 21 Plains in total then.
I use the crawling marginally more often but in this type of deck, 99/100, if you have mana to pump into it you’re already out of gas and probably scooping soon.
skyclave seems like the no brainer for the 3 drop spot
@@VictorTheLegend Hushbringer lol
Grats on 700 in a row. I know I look forward to eating everything you put out here at work, makes my day muuuuuch faster and more enjoyable. I appreciate the hard work 👍
Mono white aggro and mono white Yorion are my fave meta and off-meta decks in the format. Thank you for trying to make Basri good, so sad he never really panned out.
Your esper deck, I think it was the last you did, has a 70% for me in over 40 games. I only made slight changes but it is really good against most decks right now.
One underrated uncommon is Light of Promise. Pair it with a life linker and you can run away with the game easily
I personally don’t think CGB would touch light of promise with a 69-foot pole.
@@stefanrabenstein3753 I guess in the deck I use it in it’s more of a mono white voltrony deck with things that grant hex proof and such
I think that’s better in the Heliod version...without Hushbringer clearly
Congrats on 700 CGB.
I stay till the end on nearly every video every day :3 Love the ending wrap ups
Castle ardenvale is there to help against control, after all eventually they'll run out of removal and that's when you attack with a token equipped with maul to deal those last points of damage
Platinum gameplay is always funny xD
Congrats for the streak and the 100k
CGB driving that bus and taking us all to school. Thank you for the solid gameplay analysis.
any suggestions to substitute the 1/4 with fliying?
I bought an Eagle Fangs shirt before the episode was even over
love me some aggro cgb, thanks cgb congrats on your 100k
Nice one and with Legion Angel out of the deck the Hushbringer does not endanger your own Deck at all.
The shuffler is fine. You actually want a shuffler biased against randomness which would be terrible.
What are the best swaps for the Basri and Legion Angels?
How did you fall to a lower rank than me? I'm so stuck on Diamond tier 4. Your Mono White decks are such an inspiration to my decks.
I’d like to see the percentage of scoops simply because they look across the table and see your gamertag. I wouldn’t want to be them.
Keep up the great work! CKC
100k subs, congratulations!
I like Basri Ket alot in combination with the Proliferate mechanic (e.g. Grateful Apparition, Karns Bastion). Sadly those rotated out but i still like to play those in historic.
Ironically if I saw a video with “CONSISTENT 55% WINRATE” I’d be more likely to netdeck, because that’s incredibly good
Can I interest you in a 62% WR at standard events after playing 87 matches? I'm mostly kidding I didn't play it in like 2 weeks and I think the meta switched a bit, but it was really good for grinding gold. Now kidding aside what do you believe to be a big enough sample size to put the label of consistent?
Wow, I thought Basri would work. Kinda like enigmatic incarnation; it can work, probably won't, but if you try. But incarnation works! Credit to Absurd Heroine for the idea, but I turned it into a full combo deck, keruga and all.
Thank you for giving the better white deck (the one without Heliod) a spotlight.
CGB did you try Mothra in this deck?
Thoughts on dropping a hush bringer and adding an ozolith?
Yeah. It's a pet card honestly. I built a hydra edh just to have a good reason to play it.
Definitely going to play this deck in ranked! Got to make it back to Mythic!
Thx for Cobra Kai Info that S03 has launched yet.
In bowling 700 is good. In MTGA content creating it’s GREAT. Thank you for your dedication.
“Some people like to buy stuff.” -CGB
I hope these pearls of wisdom are being collected for the inevitable BioPic.
Living up to 100 k subs , cobra kai theme mono white , just great, thx made me laugh so hard
Congrats on 100k
I can finally hit Diamond rank thanks to CGB being popular. All I have to do is build a janky tier 5 weirdo deck that just so happens to perfectly counter all the netdecking nobrainers bending the meta.
Careful to build a new deck every few days as he releases new content.
Easy money!
Thanks CGB!
Cgb would you like to try using the starter decks. Then upgrading it content.
700 videos in a row awesome! You will get to 1000
White-black deck in the stats is most likely the mirror with Lurrus being counted the “black” portion. Just a thought.
Also, I forgot to say, CONGRATS on 100k!
I try Basris Lieutenant in the flex spot and find those 2/2 bodies win long games.
33:33 speaker does not come back, because it has flying
Whoa, 13:00 -ish, putting two Mauls on the Aspirant. I've been conditioned so much that the concept of opponent not having removal is impossible for me to conceive.
