      God has said in the Quran:
      { O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous - ( 2:21 )
      [He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him]. ( 2:22 )
      And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful. ( 2:23 )
      But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.( 2:24 )
      And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally. ( 2:25 )

    Luke, forget it. I just found one of your other videos that you showed how to do self-launch where you have bar and lines upwind. Thanks again.

    Great vid :) however I think anyone watching this should know...
    The upwind setup method advantage is that some people think it makes untwisting the lines slightly easier
    The downwind setup method clear advantage is you can clearly see that all your lines are connected to the right parts of the kite and not crossed so your launch (statistically the most dangerous part of kiteboarding) is safer especially when you are self launching where no mistakes can be made.
    The downwind setup method is also safer for who ever launches your kite as they dont have to step over your lines in which they could get caught.
    The only disadvantage of the downwind setup is that you have to turn your bar upside down to have the red on the right when running your lines out. This could be confusing to some people.
    I personally think the safest way is downwind and its as quick as the upwind method.

      Thanks, I agree with your points. You can see that video for downwind setup here. ua-cam.com/video/YwOW5XtJn_A/v-deo.html In my opinion, its best to know and understand both setup options. Thanks luke

    I prefer the upwind system too. Happy with downwind too, but I like that the wind blows the lines away from me as I am walking to it make it a little easier to walk the lines. more care must be taken with this approach when launching as you say, because it's not hard to end up with a hotter launch than desired if you don't walk far enough downwind prior to putting tension in the lines.

    I feel like in the early 2000’s all we did was upwind line attachments. Now most do downwind but then back then we couldn’t self launch very easily.

    Hi Luke, I wish you had also shown the steps to position the lines perpendicular to the kite to do the self launch including things to check to prevent bridle twists or a hot launch when setting up lines upwind. Could you please do a video on this. Thank you !!!!

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  6 років тому

      Hey KD, yes, I am actually planning to make that exact video, as even in the upwind self launch, some times you want to self launch, but can't drag your lines around, so the cross wind setup is needed. so I will make it :)

  • @davestybay
    @davestybay 6 років тому

    Hi Luke, I notice that you launch beach-side. I tend to launch dune-side and then if disaster strikes my kite would go through the zenith to beach-side, which means my gear or myself will end up in the water. What's your call on this, plus or minus?

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  6 років тому +2

      Hey Dave, good observation, both have their advantage and disadvantages
      like you say, if you are standing in or close to the water when you launch, if the kite was to unexpectedly launch, and race over your head (like you connected the lines incorrectly or are holding the wrong side of the bar etc), then yes, you may be saved by the fact the kite throws you into the water. The disadvantage here is it forces you to move the kite over your head to the other side every time you launch,. Just this action alone could be the cause of the accident in the first place
      .
      Conversely, if you launch on the land and have your kite close to the water, then you launch your kite, keep it low and walk toward the water, and does not require too much movement of the kite to get to the water. In gusty conditions I feel this is preferred, as moving the kite over zenith could be dangerous. Overall, both work, and both have an advantage and disadvantage. I have never had an issue with either and most importantly, you choose the direction based on the local environment. Thanks :)

    I really wouldn't recommend ever laying out your lines upwind of your kite and attaching them.
    You cant do an effective pre flight check that you have them correctly attached by lifting the bar and looking along the lines to the bridle. You are also far more likely to be in a hot launch position by not walking far enough downwind when you lay lines upwind. The other thing to note is if you are self launching with the bar upwind you are much more likely to get your bridle twisted or caught when doing so.
    If you have space to lay lines out upwind you should just swap and put kite upwind.
    One other thing is if in the unlikely event for some reason your kite should start blowing away before you are set up you stand a much better chance of stopping it before it dissapears down the beach and does damage.
    This experience comes from 17years of kiting and instructing.

      Hey Neil, thanks for your detailed comment, I always love hearing from people as experienced as you.
      I agree, the downwind setup does remove some of the risks of errors in setup.
      I also have a video covering that here ua-cam.com/video/YwOW5XtJn_A/v-deo.html .
      In my option, i like to know both methods, and more specifically to be confident in my ability to setup my lines on any angle, as many of the launches we have are not as perfect as the beach in the video.
      Tight launches and sideways line setup in crowed areas is common for me, and when i attach my lines, its comforting to know the difference between the 2 setup methods, how they work, the advantages and disadvantages of each method, and how that might effect the way I do it on any given day, knowing no matter what, i'll have it right.
      The true secret to good line setup is having a system that you follow EVERY time. its repetition and double checking that removes mistakes, no matter which way you run your lines.
      Thanks again.
      Luke

    Great tips here Luke. Can you give some feedback on the Ocean Rodeo Stickshift bar that you’re using?

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  6 років тому

      Hey mate, yeah for sure, its the first Stick shift (rear line trim bar) that i have owned. First I thought I wouldn't really need it... but since using it, I don't think i would go back. really simple bar setup, nothing above you in your face, simple to power, even easier to depower and an adjustable throw to set to your own preference, below the bar swivel... its good stuff. We have made a video about it... i'll post it soon :) What are you using now?

    • @oceanromeo
      @oceanromeo 6 років тому

      Flukes Kitesurfing Thanks for the bar feedback. I’m currently using the Slingshot Sentinel control bar. Below bar de-power was preferable and so for my riding style Stickshift is appealing. I’m contemplating purchasing one to use with my quiver.

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  6 років тому

      Nice, I was riding slingshot bars too, and they where good, but i am finding the Ocean rodeo bar to be so much easier to trim, plus if you are wave riding you and lightly bump out power while going down the line which makes life great. I will make a video for it :)

    Upwind = dangerous, Downwind = safe. DO NOT FOLLOW that guy's advise.

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  Рік тому

      Both ways are safe. As well as crosswind. The danger is not in the setup direction, its incorrectly setting up. This is proven by the fact you can have a safe launch with both upwind and downwind setup. And.. you can have a failed launch with both upwind and downwind setup. Plenty of people mess up the launch with downwind setup... plenty of people have safe launches with upwind setup. so again, it's not the direction, its the method and checking you have setup correctly and prepared for safe launch.

    • @vinz9741
      @vinz9741 Рік тому

      @@FlukesKitesurfing Yes, but no. It is like saying 'Plenty of people ride moto with no helmet and have never had problems, so the helmet does not make your ride safer'. Downwind is much safer than upwind. Period.

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  Рік тому

      @@vinz9741 lol no it's nothing like saying that. I think you're overestimating the risk of an upwind line connection. It's not that big a deal... I should say, I personally almost always connect my lines downwind. I have a video for downwind connection, plus a video that compares both setup methods. But in my opinion, to be a confident and independent kiter you should know both methods and understand what is most important when launching: that you have connected your lines correctly, and know the perfect position to launch. That is what is important. Kiters should feel capable both ways, should they ever need to use it. That is what this video is for.

    • @vinz9741
      @vinz9741 Рік тому

      @@FlukesKitesurfing it's 100% like that though ;) Upwind Dangerous vs Downwind far less dangerous; why launching upwind?

  • @kitetucket-nantucketkitebo1380
    @kitetucket-nantucketkitebo1380 6 років тому +1

    You should never setup your lines upwind, not to mention teaching other people how to do it!

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  6 років тому +3

      Of course you should be able to set up your lines upwind... Every independent kitesurfer should be able to set up their bar and lines in ANY direction with the confidence that they have done it correctly. They should understand the risks and benefits of all line setups, how to manage them and how to do it safely.
      That's what this video is about... And an important one to teach others.
      Downwind line setup is not always available. You should be able to pick the setup direction that best suits the current environment, knowing, that no matter how you setup, you have done it right.
      Here is my video for downwind setup: ua-cam.com/video/YwOW5XtJn_A/v-deo.html
