  • A quick and safe way to land your kite by yourself everytime... Safely and easily. See all self launching & self landing your kite methods here: flukeskitesurfing.funnelbundl...
    Using this self land technique, the kite should land leading edge into the wind, powerless and still attached to your safety line.
    There are 4 ways I use self-land my Kitesurfing kite.
    In this self land method we use the safety system and 3 pre-planning steps to land the kite on the beach
    I believe this to be the easiest way to self land your kite and with the added safety of using the safety line.
    Again, this video How-to self land your kite safely and easily everytime. Is only one of several videos we have on self landing your Kitesurfing kite on the beach.
    I hope you find it helpful and please like and subscribe for more :)

    If no one is around I usually use an anchor point to self land but I had a wide open clear beach yesterday so I figured I should give this a go. It went perfectly, the kite landed on its leading edge and didn't move an inch, just like your video :-) I've had a few failed attempts when landing the kite by pulling a middle line in the past but using the safety feels totally safe and under control. Super easy instructions to follow :-)

    Hey buddy was just wondering, does this damage your kite overtime? Given that I do it in a clear sandy area every time.
    I’ve seen other methods for self landing but they’re a bit too advanced for me yet so I do this every time. Still a noob lol

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  Рік тому +1

      Hey Drew, this is a great way to do it. Personally i wouldn't worry about damage on sand, but anything else could be an issue. The main thing i would focus on if I did this constantly would be getting the safety line to be the top center line before ejecting., the more you can get it to land LE down the better :)

    How would you land it if you DONT have a safety line on your bar for modified bars? What if I take the entire chicken look off and let it go and it will only stretch as far as my leash allows it?

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  3 роки тому

      Hey, yeah it will only go as far as the leash allows. That is called "suicide mode" that some kiters set when learning unhooked tricks. Over all i would suggest you get a bar that does have a safety release system.. you never know when you might need it. that said, we have some other self land options on our channel so if you check out the other videos you will see them :) (and we have a new course for landing coming soon!)

    The safety leash on my Cabrinha bars is attached to BOTH of the front bridle lines. Is that a problem?

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  3 роки тому

      Are the centre lines on a pulley so the safety line lengthens & shortens the other? What year is your bar? Some older kite bars do have a high Y..
      The safety is designed to completely remove all power from the kite by flagging the kite out on 1 line. The kite can no longer fly when the line lengths become significantly uneven- after you fire the safety... Main thing is to test your equipment in a safe setting (before you need it ) so grab a kite buddy to practice. If your kite is still holding power on the front lines (older bars) I would probably decide to buy a newer model bar.
      Cabrinha makes great gear, and every kite brand newer equipment has been improved on.. a great way to maybe update your kit is to update your bar. That's something we recommend ppl do when buying used kites, and have done ourselves!
      Obviously it's up to you to make the call. Kite bars are definitely an important piece of safety equipment. If you'd like extra help/advice on your current bar shoot us an email & we'd be happy to take a look at your bar.
      all the best,

      Flukes Kitesurfing : Thanks for the reply! The bars I have are 2012s, I think. Releasing the first stage send the bar away on the safety line (though the chicken loop actually stays with the harness), but since the safety line is attached to both front lines at a small metal ring, the kite flags on both front lines equally. Replacement time? Are these things ever able to be retrofitted? Hate to waste equipment without a lot of wear on it

      Main thing is, Can you fire the safety and completely depower the kite in an emergency? If you break your leg / sprain an ankle etc. & just need to get the kite down on the ground, can u do that..
      since 2012 id say there's definitely been improvements.. just checked out their new bars and under 'Features' all are listed as
      '1X Centralized flagging line connection point' . I did also just check out this video:
      kitesurfing-handbook.peterskiteboarding.com/reviews/cabrinha-quicklink-ids-control-bar-2012
      and it says (for this bar anyways) the kite can be depowered, altho the wind looks light in the video. If you have trouble self landing in stronger wind (using the safety) because the kites still flying off the 2 centre lines, maybe plan ahead and set up an anchor.. so u can fly the kite down to 9 or 3 clip into the anchor etc. and go grab the kite.
      we have a retired bar jimmied as a chin up bar :) or u could almost make like a TRX out of one?
      Hope this helps, let us know how you go

      Flukes Kitesurfing : Thanks again for the replies. i have never had to fire the safety. Guess i should give it a try. I do sail by myself, so I am practiced at self-launching and landing with an anchor, and have also self landed and launched without one a few times, all without using the safety. Maybe will get a new bar or try to retrofit the old ones. I covet the OR Stick Shift you are using, but the cost is pretty steep.

      Flukes Kitesurfing : Yup, that’s my bar(s) in the video link. I do know from working on the bar on dry land that resetting the safely once released would be pretty difficult in the water, especially under conditions that required release in the first place.

You have some of the best power kite instruction on UA-cam, by far! your training is very complete, to the point, and you cover even the smallest details that novice power kite users need to know. You're instruction is very clear, methodical and very easy to understand because you seem to think out loud when you're describing what's going on with your different techniques. Hey what is bad for me is when people comment like on your other video saying that's not right, but they don't have a video that is better or any infact. for a novice it can get very confusing, as a novice thinks mmmm is he right or are they? For me your videos are one of the clearer better ones on here iv'e watched. So thanks for making the effort. I have a Cabrinha 1x and so I can attach the center lines and specify what way i want the kite to flag out on, will try this for sure.

      Hey Chris, thanks for the support :) I think the honest answer to that other video, is we are both right. Some of the comments highlight the risks involved with that other video method, (it really is advanced only) however,in my mind, the biggest risk of all is not understanding your kite and having a variety of self-land method in your mind to suit any situation you may face. (this is the reason I have made multiple videos explaining different methods) This video right here is by far the safest way, the other video is a "non text book" alternative method for different occasions. Thanks again for the comment mate! Lots more videos coming.

    Thanks for the video. I Really appreciate all your videos. I am a new guy currently unable to get back up wind yet and am stuck with only heading out when I have a buddy to help land me and walk back upwind. I am considering doing this just to make it out and get some down wind runs in. Do you think this is a viable solution? I'm at a side on shore beach, but the beach is only about 40 to 60 meters deep, not the open beach here.

  • @Baulposch
    @Baulposch 7 років тому +2

    Hi, thanks for your clear video, that helps a lot! Just curious though: Last weekend when I went surfing, I made a beginner mistake and brought the kite down to the ground, used the safety release and was hoping I could walk up to the kite because I believed it would depower. However, the kite - now only being attached to my safety leash - was still powered and pulling the power line cut my fingers and I was not able to walk up to my kite. Is that what happens when it is released on the wrong side of the wind screen? And is there a way to fix that mistake? In my case, some coast guard came up and helped me, but if I would be all alone I would have had no clue on how to save my kite and myself.
    So, in short: A kite lying on its back, still powered but only attached to the safety leash and all alone on the beach. What to do?
    Any thoughts?

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  7 років тому +5

      Hey Paul, ok, that's not good mate. A couple of things below...
      First, your safety system should completely depower the kite in ALL circumstances. It doesn't matter if the wingtip in on the ground or the kite is at 12, on either side of the window or anything else. if you activate the safety, the kite should depower.
      There are a couple of reasons why it might not.
      A. Your gear needs updating. Your bar and lines are not working as they should and need repair or replacement.
      B. The wind is really light. Some systems have a certain amount of friction in the safety system, so it requires a decent pressure to activate properly. This is true for my slingshot bar and if the wind is super light, sometimes I need to grab the leash after activating, and give it a yank to release the line properly.
      C. Your lines are tangled. This could add to friction and not allow the safety line to slide, similar to "B".
      D. Your bar is set in "suicide mode'. This means even after activating your safety, your bar and lines stay intact and will only depower to the fully sheeted out position and not flagging depowered.
      So, take a look at your gear and make sure everything is working as it should, then take a buddy down the beach and practice with it until you are comfortable. It's really important that you have confidence in your safety system as I am sure you understand, and from what it sounds like, the safety system is not working as it should, or the system itself is flawed.
      All of that said, in the event as you had. (Or when something goes wrong like that) If you are by yourself, and the kite is still powered sitting downwind on the beach, you can't just stand there (obviously), so to get the kite powerless. This is what I do...
      Step1. Follow the leash up hand over hand until you are back up to the bar.
      Step 2. Physically get hold of one front line about 3 meters toward the kite and away from the bar, (so you are not holding it close to the bar, but 3 meters up the centerline) commit to grabbing it and holding it.
      It's REALLY IMPORTANT that you do not wrap your hands in it, or ever let go of it, and you are NOT standing in or around the other lines.
      From this point, you can do 1 of 2 things.
      Option 1. Making sure you are clear of all other lines, walk toward the kite with a firm grasp of that line. The kite will roll over backwards and "fly" on its back (much like when you are holding your kite and walking upwind) and progressively depower it as you walk toward it. Even if it tumbles at this point (which is shouldnt), commit to holding that line and it will rest powerless allowing you to walk all the way to the kite using that line. (Providing you are clear of the bar and there are no snags on the ground that may apply tension to the other lines)
      Option 2. Once you have the center line in your grasp, Walk sideways across the wind window first, so the kite is NOT directly downwind of you, you will find, holding 1 center line, you will be able to do this one way and not the other. One way the kite will slide back downwind of you when you try, and the other, it will move to the side of the wind window. (That's the side you want)
      Then. Reel that line in and turn the kite untill the leading edge faces the wind. the front line you would pull is the one joined to the kite furthest away from you, (if that makes sense) and it will pull the windtip around as you pull it until it rotates enough that the wind stops powering it.
      This isn't ideal, as you will be pulling on a powered kite with 1 line in your hands so you really need to commit to holding that line pulling it steadily and hard and turning the kite. or holding tight and walking toward it. (This can be quite hard to pull at the start, but will get easier as the kite turns or rolls)
      As I said, it's not ideal, but in an emergency as you describe, that is how you can do it.
      Anyways, hope that helps mate. Be safe, get your gear checked and be sure to practice in light winds. :)

    Hi, sorry I don't get why you have to identify the front line to land it? What difference does it make when you have to emergency land and the other side of the windows it's not available ?

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  7 років тому +7

      Hi, if you are ever in an emergency, activate your safety immediately. No pre-landing preparation is required or should be considered. This video shows how to NEATLY land your kite, sitting correctly on the ground leading edge into the wind. If you do this exact method on the opposite side of the wind window, the kite will still drop from the sky ok, however its likely to lay on its back, and potentially tumble. Again, that is NO ISSUE and if you are in an emergency, activate your safety. If that side is not available to you, you can still land that way... But if you have time and are comfortable with both sides available, having your safety line at the top center line, will have your kite land more neatly and controlled. Thanks
