I'd take a turn up, turn down any day of the week. This digital stuff is not what its cracked up to be. 70 in winter, 68 in summer - how hard should that be...
I just moved into my first apartment today and this video was so helpful. I was stressing about how to make my thermostat work. Thanks so much kind stranger! You rock!
this is so overly complicated. thank you for this how to video. our new house has a honeywell and we've been struggling to keep the heat on, couldn't figure out why it kept going back down and we're freezing! but this should help us stay warm finally
Very clear and helpful instructions, Andrew! I've not known how to set our thermostats until watching your video today and we have been in this new house since 2013. I agree it is very complicated and would intimidate me every time it started blinking for information I did not know how to provide. I also finally got sick of changing both thermostats upstairs and downstairs several times daily so I searched for a Honeywell Thermostat that looked liked ours and BAM! I found you! OMG, I'm so excited! Watching you do it was extremely helpful and I took notes! I did notice the thermostat showed me that I needed new batteries which was helpful, but not mentioned in your video, although quite clear on the panel.
I've probably commented many years ago on this video (because it looks familiar), but I needed to reset the thermostat again and couldn't find my computer file telling me how to do it. I really appreciate the simplicity (at least for the part where you just bump the temperature button up or down and then press hold - That's all I cared about). Thank you again!!!
THANK YOU! This thermostat is a perfect example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. It should be: decide your preferred temperature first and THEN if you want to program it with times etc. go on UA-cam to figure it out lol
Thank you sharing these directions they clarfied a key step for me. It's always some simple step missing when things don't work and your video is valuable.
I remember setting the anticipator on the old Honeywell's dial , and dual lever thermostats. It would be great if you could adjust the deadband on these types of stats.
Thanks for this video. My issue is more complicated. This unit comes on when the temperature changes by about a 10th of a degree. Thus, it is almost always running. I want to set it so that it comes on when the house temp changes one to two degrees. That way it doesn't run so much.
I know I spent hours on this. All you have to do is push the "hold" button and that turns the programming/scheduling off. It will now allow you to manually change to the desired temperate. Leave it on "hold". If you press "hold" again it will go back to the programming/scheduling.
I just moved into a new home and it had honeywell installed. let me tell you how bad this thing is. it's the middle of the summer, i set the temp to 76 degrees and I hit hold. a couple minutes later I notice it's freakin burning hot inside my house and looked at the thermometer and the it reads 82 degrees. it went up?? wtf is the hold button just for looks?
Oh my gosh! That’s happening to me also. I HATE being in a hot house. I just bought this house and this thermostat is trying to kill me. It says it is 77 degrees in here. Like why?! I turned it down to 50 and it’s still hot. I’m just going to turn it off. I’ll have to get a contractor out here soon.
It does take a long time once it is at the temp to turn off. I used to have an old manual thermostat that was MUCH better. Still there are much worse ones out there.
This has been so helpful! My issue is it still stops working at a certain time every morning. Although the settings are all set and set to the same temperature. It jumps from 73 degrees to 85 within a few minutes and then I can’t get it to start back up
Thanks! Gang; I had a "Hunter Thermostat" that I installed at my home in Kentucky. I used the automatic and when we returned from a three day weekend away in the summer the house was at 52 degrees. The unit had been running constantly for three days and there was ice on my indoor fan housing. I called Hunter and they expressed no need to reimburse me for a faulty thermostat! Now, I only use the manual settings .
To restore default settings: 1. Press SET 3 times to display “Set Schedule.” 2. Press and hold SET and RUN at the same time for 4 seconds. 3. Press RUN. "This thermostat is pre-set with energy-saving program settings. We recommend these settings, since they can reduce your heating/cooling expenses." *The only way to permanently override it is to click the HOLD button
Most confusing piece of crap ever. I don't want to schedule, I just want my air to switch on when it reaches a certain degree. I don't care about Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday and what time, I just wanted always to remain the same and I want to always have control over my AC
I agree that the schedule process is a bit over the top but this video is super helpful when first dealing with this damn thing. The instructions were super easy to follow, clear to understand and the guy's pretty thorough! Thanks!!
I agree with Carissa. And everyone who is losing it over this infernal thermostat! Llife's hard enough without all that. But, Carissa is right. I think Mr. Hill has done an outstanding job demonstrating how to operate this Honeywell BEAST! At first I wanted to throw my laptop out with the thermostat, but I took a few minutes , calmed down, reminded myself I have overcome greater obstacles in life, and followed along the video and BOOM I had it programmed and running. It is funny , seems like a whole lotta hoo rah than just dialing the temperature and hitting the on switch, Thank you Mr. Hill !

Great video. Question, I guess you can't bypass a cycle? My thermostat in my primary house is, when you set wake say at 68deg and time, then you go to leave, you don't have to set anything, you just hold it a few seconds and it bypasses that cycle and return cycle if you like.
Older video but helped me. Mine is a different manufacturer but it's pretty much the same. I was just confused about wake, leave etc. I'm still not sure what it will do for Saturday I didn't set anything there.
Press the up or down arrow buttons until you are at the desired temp. The screen will show "temporary". Then if you press the "hold" button it will lock at that temp until you change it.
I'm a millennial and grew up with the mercury switch thermostat, bought a house with central air and it didn't come with a manual, this was a big help. Stupid isn't lack of knowledge, it's dogging others for wanting to learn.
Thank you. I just moved in to a new apartment and I have been trying to figure it out!!!! Who needs maintenance, when we have youtube videos!!! Thx again!!!
I have done exactly what you have shown, but my inside heat is showing lower than what I have set. I have programmed it it tun for 24 Celsius, but inside shows as 20...what am I doing wrong please?
I would simply like to be able to adjust the temp...UP or DOWN manually, without all these settings. I don't need to have a different temp in the morning or when I get home from work......or the days of the week. I just basically want an ON/OFF manual Thermostat setting....but I happened to move to this house with this complicated Thermostat. QUESTION: Is there a simple way to bypass all the various time of day, day of the week, settings....??????
Thank you for your video. I have a problem three different companies have not been able to explain to me. Moved in to my house three years ago and still can't totally get this system. I have a quad level home. There are three thermostats; lower level (master bedroom), main level and up stairs. The temperature in the main level and upstairs is not accurate alot. I have changed batteries. Can you explain how to manage the Three levels?
Thank you! How can i program it to nit cluck o. And off every 5 minutes. I'd like for it to come on a few times a day. I feel like with it clicking on every five minutes its going to ruin my furnace.
I would like to totally bypass setting for days of the week. I would like it to be able to set the temperature whenever I want to and have it stay there without programming at for the week. I’m not sure how to do that from your video.
thanks you saved my life. I was alone at home and woke up to no heat but 30 degrees outside. I learned how to open the box, change batteries and set the temp.
How do you get it off the schedule, so it only runs when you move the switch to Cool? When I switch it to Cool and use the down arrow to set the temperature, the bottom right corner blinks "Cool On" and nothing happens.
It means it’s warming the house to 74 from 66. But depending on the size of the house than the heat may take longer to heat to your setpoint. But if it doesn’t get to 74 within a day (Max) then it’s probably time to call the a/c repair guys
My thermostat is set to sleep at 10:00 and 70 degrees. But it is now only 9:15 and it has already changed to 70. I changed the batteries and have reprogrammed it several times. But it continues to change to the sleep temperature much earlier than the time programmed. Why? This is driving me crazy!
Can you tell me what the model number of the thermostat you used in this video is. I have the same one and dont have an owners manual and want to get one. Thanks either way.
If i want to set on a specific degree so that when the temperature is not in that degree ,it starts working, and no scheduling for time and day, what should I do? Would you please help me

I was raised being told to NEVER touch it! Now I have a home and have to touch this thing and I don't want to mess it up. Reminds me of when I was a child and wondered what my toys did while I was at school. I believe I've set it for the week the way I want. My question is, what happens when I'm gone? To be safe, due to my ignorance of setting a thermostat, I set it every day to 65. I'm not a fan of running the heater much at all and just use blankets and such. I also work later. So, I set wake up to 9am, I leave at noon usually and come back about 9:45p. I am hoping i did this correctly...
Thev video is good if you want all those settings , but I don't want get up ,go to bed, the time or the date I just want go over and raise or lower it as I need , how do I do away with all the other stuff or at least not have to set it
On aTH4210 how do I get into "settings" and then "preferences" then "smart response technology" to turn "recovery mode" off (and to turn off "energy saving mode" ? Thanks
I thank you for the Video, i did everything you said but my problem is my thermostat time is different than my watch time. Ex: its 3:30 pm on my Thermostat and is 6 :28 Am on the real time ! How can i solve that Problem?
I’m pretty sure that if youclick set the set clock option should pop up on the screen and the displayed time should be blinking now you can change it up or down using the arrows (press and hold the up or down arrow to go from am to pm or pm to am quicker ) and set the time to match
The fan option, you said it circulate the air so does the air come I from the outside at all? I do not have ac is it a good idea to turn the fan on when hot?
So the heat turns on at your wake up time and shuts off when you leave then runs again when you come home or does it run throughout the day till u come home???
Yes, press the up or down arrow buttons until you are at the desired temp. The screen will show "temporary". Then if you press the "hold" button it will lock at that temp until you change it.
Thank you so much. My elderly Mom lives in a senior residential home and each room has finally gotten a thermostat. However, no instructions were ever given to the poor souls so they have no idea how to set or operate the thermostat. Most are always cold. :-)
Ok just coming in to water plants, it's 90 plus in this az house. I turned the AC on to 74 and stupidly hit set and all the days of the week came up. I hit run. Screwed it up. Thinking if I leave it alone it will go away. How to over ride it?
how do i reprogram. currently my return mode is running at 72. its too cold for me. and i want to increase it to may be 75. I have followed the above said instructions and pressed the Run button but it has been running for 72 for a long time.
So if im leaving on a long trip and I want it to stay at like 45 degrees so I don't have a really expensive heating bill would I be able to put it on 45 degrees and hit hold and it will stay at temp until I return despite a already programmed schedule
Hey people ... I just bought an 'old school' (NO PROGRAMMING), a Honeywell CT31 for $18.88 at Lowes. Made my life simpler. EXCEPT ... it took me a few days to get it going ... as it had a tiny piece of cardboard at the factory that said, "Remove" ( in 3 languages) so tiny I can't read it with my glasses (to protect it , or to get back at me?), which was NOT AT ALL addressed in the instructions (thanks a lot Honeywell!!) As my licensed in New York & New Jersey as a Residential Electrician son-in-law was saying, I don't understand ... Everything is wired right, yet it's not working, his 20-year-old helper spied the tiny speck of cardboard and removed it. It now works beautifully.
Remember the old school round ones? Turn up for heat, turn down for no heat...Those were the days.
tell me about it
I'd take a turn up, turn down any day of the week. This digital stuff is not what its cracked up to be. 70 in winter, 68 in summer - how hard should that be...

Life saver. I was sooo confused after we lost power .
Thanks so much! Was freeeeeeeeezing in my house! Life saver! Like literally! Can't believe I actually found a tutorial on here! #dancing
Is there a simple raise or lower the temperature? No special time
no one seems to know the answer to that question.....and that's what everyone is asking....
Yes, press the up or down arrow buttons until you are at the desired temp. The screen will show "temporary". Then if you press the "hold" button it will lock at that temp until you change it.
I followed your instructions and as soon as i released the hold button after setting the temperature the old temperature reappeared.
No it won't it will hold on temporary until the next scheduled time is reached.
Hi there, if our house doesn’t have ac but just heat can i still set it to cold? Also it is summer now can set it to off instead of heat?
what if you put system switch on heat but the read-out stays on cool setting?
Just bought one similar to yours. Want to bypass the leave and return but can’t figure it out. Help please.
Thank you so much. My elderly Mom lives in a senior residential home and each room has finally gotten a thermostat. However, no instructions were ever given to the poor souls so they have no idea how to set or operate the thermostat. Most are always cold. :-)
yes, but what if you don't want a schedule?
My problem exactly! I just want heat and cool.. off and on.
Can I have questions I have hot water home but heat not warm home did you know what wrong? Temperature home is 62 ?
Does it run doing leave if not is there a way i could have it just be off during leave?
