Best paint channel, period. Narration is informative and to the point; no rambling chit chat like any others. You repeatedly return to good basic practices throughout to help eliminate rookie mistakes. No hype. No BS. Thanks. Keep 'em coming.
Thank you !!
I did 40+ years in the collision repair/refinishing business. I retired from teaching it at a public technical school. My food for thought: good technique Steven, if you want a long healthy life, get a fresh air system. Especially when illegally spraying with little or no ventilation, no arrestor, and venting illegally into the atmosphere. It's nice to see the use of a self etching primer, a step many skip. One other thing, I would have used Nason clear over the Nason basecoat. When you mix product lines it usually ends with paint failure later on, as I've seen on many occasions. Nason clear is very reasonably priced.
Valid point. I know the videos are aimed at the enthusiast crowd and not the pros, but you are doing a disservice showing a guy in a cloud of isocyanates with just a half face respirator and a chemical (?) cartridge. Some of the problems from isocyanates are immediate...and some hit you years later. Want to be around for your kids and grandkids? Get a fresh air system as mentioned. Wet edges...
I don't like items masked when painting anything. So I have respect for painters that remove everything off surfaces that are going to be painted. Way to go Steve!
Been painting for 30 years, you have the best series on the net. Very informative.
How do you break this down to more simple for. The paint seems to be easiest to grasp. But all the different sand grits to include p and k. But also single stage paint (sounds like imron) or what I think imron is. Not many auto painters around to learn from
Just painted some fenders in my dusty garage after watching a bunch of videos, after a little wet sanding came out better then I could have expected
better THAN
noob here.. when did you wet sand.. after?
@@fsflip3111 Yea after the clear coat cures, wet sand and buff
This is a good video, very satisfying to see that paint going on! One tip to newby car painters: the PSI specified for the paint is as measured AT THE GUN, not at the compressor! In other words you have to compensate for the length of the hose you are using, (because the pressure drops more the longer the hose is)..and add pressure based on that. Like if they say "30 PSI" you might need to have a reading of 40 at the compressor to spray at the specified pressure.. You need a chart to tell how much to compensate.
Great tip.. thanks 🙏
Another reason to regulate the pressure at the gun, not at the compressor, there's a lot more volume at 90 psi than at 30psi. Even if you compensate way back at the compressor side to get 30 psi at the gun, if something happens that pressure could dip below 30psi in places, especially if you're not using a 60 gallon professional system like this and trying to make a 20 or 30 gallon oil-free 1.5 hp compressor work. If you've got 60 or 90 psi up to the gun and regulate the pressure THERE, then you should never have problems with low pressure at the gun tip.
wow, I've been painting for 20 years and this is actually one of the few videos I've seen that isn't complete BS. I usually watch these type of videos just for a laugh. Well done, good informative commentary too.
over 20 years...I keep forgetting how old I am.
Thanks Bud !

Young back me too
@@RJ_Groot u need to watch all of his videos, trust me you will learn ALOT and realize how much you have been short cutting your painting in the past.
As a retired Auto Painter from Australia, I enjoy your content as wish you great success in this trade
I just wanted thank you my big brother was a painter 40years experience and used to tease me saying he would never show me how to paint unfortunately he passed last June without showing me the ropes I learned a lot from your vids . I don’t plan on becoming a painter but it’s good to work on my own projects
Thanks for sharing GOD BLESS YOU
In a non downdraft setting, wetting the floor really does make a HUGE difference. I keep an old janitor bucket with a mop in the corner of our old semi down draft booth, and do a quick pass before basing and another before tacking off for clear
I painted for 20 years, the guy painting the car is a great painter that's why it looks good he knows what he's doing.
This is the best paint channel I've watched, so much knowledge given freely, you are such a. Huge blessing, may The Lord richly enlargen your territory.
The best way to get a 1st class paint job without a booth is to hire Brian to come over and paint your car! Thanks!
Am the meening, youre the best techer for car painting .its well done
Y
wet the floor,is 60% of it ,the rest is wind leaks in the makeshift booth, painting outside is left to rolling it on ,i've done both, the rolling is best left to someone who has no problems of wet sanding, damn nice job on the red one
LOL, this is very true
No, no one who is good at what they do "come Over" that is open thing I CANNOT stand is people asking me to go to their houses to work on shit.
Great video. You didn't talk about an exhaust fan, filters and fresh air coming into the shop. You didn't talk about temperature and how it works with different reducers. This is a great video for the beginner, thanks.
My first TSP. What an experience! It is difficult to put into words, but that was one fun week! I attended from 1988 to 1993 when a friend from Lincoln invited us up to the inaugural Nebraska Star Party in 1994. One of our now departed club members is in this film - the guy in the green T-shirt talking to another fellow in a minivan. In the six years I attended, I saw blistering heat, days upon days of clouds and thunderstorms, and, of course, some of the best nighttime skies I had ever seen! Long live the Texas Star Party!
I've been painting (on an amateur level) for 25 years, and I LOVE your videos! Great tips, great advice and encouragement! Keep progressing forward and improving your skills and knowledge base is the way to ensure a great outcome!
Awesome feedback. Thank you !
There's too much much talking, I feel like I'm always fast forwarding to get down to the actual details. No offense but I feel he was raised by either a strong woman or many females, either way it's not his fault, but just talk to much in your videos, kinda hard for me to follow along

Used to paint plugs and molds for large yachts You are 100% correct Steve knows what he's doing - Only modification I would have made is I found it easier to control the hose by putting it over my shoulder then holding it by my side. Also love the fact you pointed out the footwork - it's as important as the flick for an even coat.
Im a begginer in this job and at this moment im working in a forklift company. Im the painter of this company and i learned a lot and gained some experience. But the best finishing sand paper we have is 320 to sand the primer. It is fine and i can do very good jobs here. But the painting is with direct clear coat in the paint. We dont use base coat then clear coat.
I want to learn more about that and this channel is being so useful for me. Its just sad that i dont have any conditions or tools to do something in my house.
Congratz for the videos you make 👌
First let me say I love your videos they have been extremely valuable to me. It seems very hard to get a straight answer on pricing when it comes to paint jobs. I understand that there are a lot of variables so thank you for actually throwing a number out there for a basic paint job. Your videos really showed me you guys deserve what you charge!
Thanks for the words and glad this cleared things up for you 😀
Im so glad you have these videos. im planning to paint my own project truck (someday) and all my 83 y/o dad keeps saying is ,i cant do it without a paint booth.
I enjoy the commentary on technique. It's really like getting to listen in on a master class. Thank you for posting.
You are very welcome you better Recognise....,
Love your tip about spraying scared/overthinking it. Two of the best paint jobs I ever laid down were areas where I was like "I just need to get some paint on there, it doesn't need to be good." One was the engine bay of my wife's car, the old paint was just not great, and I had the engine out, so I was like "I'm just going to throw down some base coat and clear, hardly anyone will see it." It ended up going on so nice there was zero orange peel and no finishing needed, because I just sprayed like I didn't care. It ended up winning a $1000 prize for best engine bay at a car show, with just a Scotchbrite prep and some extra bc/cc I had lying around.
That dude is GOOD! He looked like a machine spraying that car
so while watching this ....when or how do you plan on doing the door jambs and door ends? You guys complaining about his "golf channel voice" i actually appreciate how smooth and thought out his commentary is. hes calm, not fumbling words, very enjoyable when trying to learn something from someone who KNOWS what theyre doing and HOW to explain it. A lot of people who do really exceptional work have little ability to explain it. Brians videos are better than a lot of uh uh , you know, ah ah, like the other how to vids do.
This guy can paint and anyone will be able to get it done with Brian instructions.🔥 great results
The painter's consistency - in speed, technique, distance - amazing. He's really good.
Been painting professionally for 23yrs. Some of the best paint jobs (right out of the gun) I’ve done have been in the worst conditions.
I started following you guys because work has me painting our fleet trucks, even though I have never painted a vehicle before. I've learned a lot from them and fortunately, the first one I did didn't turn out like irrecoverable crap! So, thanks guys!
Awesome ! Glad to hear !
Very well done I liked the narrative pointing out the Dos and Donts I have only sprayed one car myself and for that one I used a Turbine HVLP spray rig I actually purchased for my Woodworking finishes I did use a two stage Dupont Automotive paint in which it was recommended that a used a colored sealer from Dupont because the car was a British car and they used a pretty soft paint from the factory I knew that because I had the car for more than 14 years and with routine washing a waxing I could see grey Primer in some areas the job came out nice surprisingly no runs, drips or orange peel or any missed spots ! bTW I did the original factory color as I did not have the time to pull the engine and prep the compartment I was quite happy with my results and all the tasks my Campbell Hausefeild Spray rig could tackle for my woodworking I often used Oilbased primers and paints as well as spraying Conversion Varnish over staingrade Exotic Woods
Now that you've done both, one of the things I found amazingly satisfying was using automotive clear and finishing techniques for wood projects.
I have the confidence to paint my own vehicle this summer thanks to you and your channel and I'm sure it will come out looking like a show car even with it being My first time painting. I will however practice on a hood from junkyard before I take on a project like that though. Thanks for all the videos I really appreciate it and I'm sure everyone else does as well unless they are a haters.
Just a note as you get started, you're going to be paying a LOT more attention to your paint job than anyone else will. Even if you have a mistake here or there, a little sag or hose drag along the rocker or end up with a bug in the clear or something, odds are good after finishing it out that you'll be the only one who notices, and it's still going to look a hundred times better than it did before you painted and you'll know better next time. Showing off one of my first paint jobs to my uncle I pointed out a couple of mistakes I had made, he said 'Sometimes the only difference between an amateur and a pro is a pro knows when to keep their mouth shut.' I consider a little flaw here or there an acceptable trade for not having to rent or set up a paint booth and deal with all the logistics of getting a taped and prepped car over there, etc. For a beautiful driver, it's going to be fine... if you're trying to take something to SEMA or Pebble Beach, hire someone.
It's dope to see you getting out and about with small shops, and independent painters! I started out the same way without a booth..its all about prep and approach! Awesome work! 👌🏾🙏🏾
Yup! That is what a society is! Exposing other painters and learning from them !
@@PaintSociety keep up good vibez, congrats on joining fatherhood also!😉💪🏾 BLESS UP-
Great video, the only thing missing is the put-together finished product.
I talked to you on Instagram about my red 75 corvette man. I’m like this close to bringing it to you to paint. You guys do a PERFECT job!
I plan on pressure washing out my entire shop, ceiling walls and floor, before doing my first paint job. I will then seal any cracks it has to prevent air from coming in with dust or insects in it. I plan on putting quality HVAC filters on one end as an intake, and exhaust fan on the other end to pull air out. I hope this will prevent dust from getting in my paint. Likely will wet floor as well.
I tried that Scuff pad on a electric da with hook and loop pad.It sands cars and bumpers to perfection. We can never stop learning new tricks to making our work easier.
You catching that bug and letting it go outside was really wholesome. Solid paintjob as always 👌
Yea man. Just can’t kill a living thing.
You seemed to mention just about everything except the fact that blowing all the cracks and crevices before paint is super important and you won’t have much dust or dirt if any when you crank the pressure up come time for the clear coat . All in all excellent job
Paint where u can't see 1st, blew my mind🤯 thanks for the tip🙏
Hi I sprayed vehicles from the early 60s enamel, la lots of young guys can’t shoot enamel. I still want to jump in and shoot one. Nice job! Rock on guys.
Man he killed that job! The red looks beautiful under the sun light.
Wow! that was impressive workmanship.... years ago I painted two cars under a tree with Ditzler enamel, they came out surprisingly well given that it would have been close to impossible for them to look worse.
A lot of times by the time you give up and paint a car they look pretty bad to start with. Back when I was in the RX7 club there was a famous video going around where someone painted their car with a roller instead of a paint gun . . . and it wasn't bad! It wasn't GOOD, but it was so much better than what it was, and after all the sanding, it looked better than a lot of cars on the road.
Taking a grinder to those panels especially with today's higher alloy content thinner body panels is a big mistake, I'm surprised those panels weren't severely warped from the heat of grinding, I painted cars for over 25 years and I have to say Steve's technique is outstanding, I was never a big fan of Nason materials but they are very cost effective.
I use to be an industrial painter ' l miss watching the transformation of what l was painting into something beautiful or into something bad to the bone. The endless quality of paint colors available today are truly incredible. I miss it very much 😭
Beautiful job! What about the door jams and underside of the hood and trunk lid?
Love videos about good craftsmanship
I missed seeing when the customer finally gets a red car
Gorgeous finish! You brought that little Honda back from the shame of rattle can finish. Nice job and excellent video indeed!
I like the fact that you visit other painters.
Damn that's an awesome one man business set up. I've been looking for a shop like that to take on bigger side jobs. Awesome content man I do this for a living and always recommend this channel to new guys coming up in the industry
That was Good.....I mostly spray Timber these days and I love seeing it come to "Life" but I'd love to paint a Car again. Nice technique, flowed on beautifully. Well Done....Thank You.
Steven did a beautiful performance! It was as though he was dancing with the car and the paint sprayer.
I used to work at a shop that had sweeping compound that you'd put on the floor to keep down dust while sweeping. Seems like that might be a good solution for keeping down dust too (besides water).
I painted a couple toppers in my garage, the best one was when it was in the 90's. The clear laid out very nicely. Not so much when it was in the 70's.
Great video and great skill in that paint job for sure. He moves like I did when I use to spray for a paint shop years ago I loved it, very robotic
Nice job! Sometimes you find yourself speeding up and 2nd guessing your speed but sticking with it is just practice. Oh yeah, airlines bouncing down a panel, easily done!
Maybe he didn't watch enough of your videos. When I was a teenager, I did a candy gold on a 53 Chevy. It looked ok, but not as nice as I wanted it. Watching a few of your videos, I spotted a few things I could have done better. I'll be doing a 49 packard soon, and while it's gonna be basic black, I definitely have picked up enough tips that I'm confident it'll look awesome
Very nice, guys. Thanks for focusing on the spray technique a little. That will help me.
1 Build a time machine.
2 Go back to the 70s and get some acrylic lacquer.
3 Hose down the back lawn and spray away.
4 Wet sand and buff.
Nice work. I've painted before, but learning a lot here..
beautiful job! I've just sprayed rear bumper on my van outside on my drive turned out perfect due to your videos many thanks' from Scotland
in the process of restoring a riding lawn mower, a motorcycle gas tank, and then a classic mustang, in that order. Hoping to learn along the way before screwing up the mustang. This video will help, and as people have stated, a non-BS straight forward, honest video. One question for all you painters out there. Eye protection? Seems like an artist's eyes being obscured is not best idea. Why mess with one of the best tools an artist has, right? Anyway, in the name of safety and all that, what say you?
Wow, great video, impressive painting skills! And excellent play-by-play commentary! If you ever get tired of painting, you’d make a great sports announcer 👍👍👍
Young buck you’re very welcome you better Recognise....,
What a fantastic painter Steven , slow but perfect like a spraying robot
Just painted my first fender with spray cans, thanks to a deer taking out the left quarter of my vehicle. Eventually told myself just do it. Took my time.
Apart from orange peel I am stoked with my results. What deer.
One word of advice. Don't settle for cheap masks. Got migranes and asthma for 2 days.
Stephen - watching you on coat#2 of the clear - just damn!
Great job! It’s great to watch real craftsman that really care. I would be proud to take my car to this shop. 👍
Wow! So much great information in this video!

A condenser on the compressor to keep the air cool...
I gotta get busy busy on shop upgrades!
Thanks for the quality content!
He killed it! Great paintwork!
These videos just keep building my confidence,
The question i always have is ; how long do you wait to remove the masking tape ? And...what technique do you use while removing it ?? Direction to pull and how fast etc...
Love your channel !
2 hours after u spray, remove it at a 45 degree angle AWAY from the paint edge and slow and steady
When doing horizontal surfaces in dealing with the hose is that I take the hose and bring it up over my shoulder so there is zero chance that it would hit my work. One thing is that it is not a good idea to paint in the same room as the compressor because of two things. One is that the compressor as it spins can send dirt and dust everywhere and two the most important thing is that as that motor turns on there are sparks coming from the motor as it spins and could detonate the vapors in the room. I've seen a fireball one time from someone that was painting on the floor.
I still use my Devilbiss 2 qt. Pressure pot and JGA 502 gun. No refills and no weight on your gun hand. Old school!!
Great explanation on the whole process. I really appreciate the attention to detail, pressures, times between coats, etc.
Thanks, again Tony &crew- another great video I just keep learning !! PJP
Someone REALLY likes Steven.
I'd like to repaint my 68 Ford Torino. Last time I painted it I used Centari Acrylic Enamel with hardener. That was back in 1982. The car still looks pretty good, but some rust spots are starting to show. Can't get the same kind of paint now, so it's on to base coat clear coat. Last time I painted the C strip on, after the first coat dried, with a gold paint. If I paint the car now with base coat, can I mask off the C strip with the tape and paint the C strip on over the base coat, pull of the masking tape and then spray on the clear coat over both colors. It would take some time to apply the C strip masking tape and my concern is timing and possible pulled of the first base coat when I pull off the masking tape.
45 years ago i started painting cars. back then it was mostly just alkyd or acrylic enamel. no clear coat.we would always start with the hood. do one side of the hood then the other then the fenders and roof, doors and finish at the back. you never wanted to walk around like you guys do. if you did that on the final coat you would end up making the first part dull due to overspray because it had already flashed off. it's like you do the front then the middle then the back like as if the car went through a waterfall.
on this car it didn't matter because you weren't doing the hood so you didn't have old paint meeting new paint.
Also, avoid painting at night because to keep the bugs out as much as you can. Also try to plan ahead if you have a lowered car or a sports car. When I painted my Prelude, I set the car on 4 large jack stands and remove the expensive wheels so when I paint the lower part of the doors, I am not getting caught with my gun or kicking up dirt the the gun might be kicking up.
Good tip. A couple of times I've started spraying a project only to realize I couldn't get enough angle on the gun to paint the bottom of the rocker panels well. Luckily the car was low enough that you can't see it well anyway, but *I* know it's there.
6:40 Brian you sound the narrator on the golf channel lol . I love your videos I have learned a lot almost done with the body work and paint on my 92 Chevy Silverado. Thanks 👍

@@WASDxMerceless same here getting everything I can sand blasted ( doors, fenders, grill, bed sides, etc).
Then patch panels, rust, dent repairs, more body work. Starting to really understand why restoring something cost alot of money if you want it right
@Mike Meyer just because you had a hard time learning doesn't mean everyone else will. I've painted frames and chassis I've fabricated along with other equipment and structures. But that was just single stage paint stuff and not 2 stage on bigger surfaces.
So I see it as it's just a few more steps of prep work and paint. And possibly another notch in the belt of things that I'm able to do. If I do fail, I have no one to blame but myself.

A quick question: I'm doing a long restoration for a project car. How to protect welded, straightened, and grinded areas? As I can't move to properly painting it any time soon. Can I just clean up those areas, apply epoxy primer and let it sit about 6 months before it gets properly painted? The car is kept in well ventilated cold garage.
You make great content, thanks!
