  • Also, my opinion of Trickster ended up being that it was a good idea but didn't have enough vocation skills to warrant it as a class.

8:29 Yeah, Dullahan encounter frequency is very weird.
    Slight spoilers.
Normally you encounter it during a specific quest, or very rarely in the wilds during the night. In my case, I only ever battled one before meeting the Dragon.
However, during post-game the Dullahan population just skyrockets for no reason, to the point where my "defeat" count for them went from 1 to 15 within 3-4 hours.

@@Johnny_Isometric my first and only encounter before post-game was actually in Battahl of all places.
Cleared a big bandit camp that is before a dungeon that connects to Volcanic Island when all lights went out and Dullahan spawned. Though, I guess there were a lot of small bridges over cliffs in that place too.

Good game. The 10,000 goblins and harpies and wolves in every single encounter gets a bit tedious, but overall good game.

Early game:made it tense, made me want to camp, even goblins hit a bit hard and after enough fights and enough loss gauge they got scary and made campsites a blessing.
Mid game: more tedious, wish they were a bit less frequent, but hey I still have vocation points I’d like to gather.
Late game: “I just killed a 10 goblins and it was so easy I couldn’t remember doing it as I passed by”

I've got this weird thing I didn't expect to love about this game's... mobility... in traversing the world- you are fought by gravity going up hills, you clamber and slip and slide on terrain while not being able to just... stick to rocks and climb them. It's got this weirdness to it I can't quite explain, but it leaves me feeling engaged every time. 120 hours in and still really feeling that.

that mechanic was also in dd1 but it wasnt very much pronounced or it wasnt that noticable (probably because the tech just wasnt there at the time)
the ranger vocation even had a passive that lets you ignore the effects of being impeded by terrain/knee-high water but for some reason it doesnt work on that one wind tunnel going to the moonrise tower

    • @SylemGistoe
      @SylemGistoe 2 місяці тому

@TheGraveyarder yeah, I remember that! the best way to get through the wind canyon is to just be too heavy to get blown around.
The physicality of everything was an aspect in the original, but it was a lot less emphasized than it is now. It applies to big enemies too- with how they stumble around and you can push them to make them fall over- or fall into, like a tree. If there's one area of the game it does feel like they built off of and tried to actually improve upon, it's definitely the way things move and traverse the environment.

I think it's good when every vocation can do it's own unique thing, exploration included, thief and sorc/mage are just better at exploring and reaching high places, or you can take a fighter/warrior pawn to boost you up (even though it doesn't work everywhere), it promotes playing different vocations, doing multiple runs. It's not for everyone, but it certainly has an identity and target audience.

A lot of weird changes and cuts that didn't sit right with me, and honestly was expecting DD1DA as the base that they built from at minimum, but the base DD2 doesn't even live up to that, which was a bummer, but still a pretty damn good time -w-

The mmo was amazing it fixed a lot of stuff wrong with dd1. It is like going from morrowind with graphical mods to multiplayer open mw with a ton of fixes and qol mods to heavily graphical modded skyrim. Fuck it looks good but why does it run like shit and have less to do.
More weapons/classes/augments/skills/enemy types/boss types/map types, 3 main pawns, classes are balanced, multiplayer, cosmetic weapon armor slots, pawns can be any class, pawns are more customizable with less obfuscation to the ai editing the mmo was amazing

yeah. I found it a shame that narratively it was actually a step back. DD1's story had decent pacing and was pretty okay, just not told in the most coherent way. DD2 is such a huge step down.

Recently found out that compared to Capcom recent games, DD2 had a much smaller dev team. From a business standpoint, it's pretty understandable. DD1 didn't have the greatest launch, and although it became a cult classic after a couple years have passed, it took capcom 12 years to drop the second game. I would count us lucky that we even got DD2. I hope that with the success of DD2, Capcom pours a lot more resources into the game now.

    • @Erick-tv8oq

Honestly, all I see are Dark Arisen fans complaining about things that were cut or changes that they didn't like, yet they always fail to mention what DD2 does that DD1 didn't do.
I haven't played DD2 yet, but I remember Dark Arisen's open world being pretty barren and honestly really undercooked. The quests were pretty good, but running around in the open world, which felt more like a particularly small and often pointless playground, was by far the worst part of DD1's base game.
How does DD2's open world, exploration and questing compare to DD1's? Half of the entire marketing campaign was focused on the world the devs were crafting, yet all I see online are either people bitching about microtransactions or Dark Arisen "veterans" bitching about almost completely inconsequential stuff like a particular skill or augment they liked more in the older game or the fact that the story isn't as good, even though the only worthwhile part of DD1's story in the base game was Grigori.
How does Dragon's Dogma 2 feel as a game? Does it accomplish things that the first tried but ultimately failed to do? Does it manage to stand on its own as a good game?

  • @figuures6098

Base dd1 vs base dd2: They fixed the biggest issue, the open world. Open world for 1 was fairly small yet empty and bland. DD2 open world I enjoy traversing, even at a leisurely pace with good encounter rates.
The story is a step back for me, personally. For [SPOILERS BELOW] reasons
You essentially go from ascending to godhood in 1, then giving your pawn your life and will, to in 2 just pissing god off by godsbaning yourself, to learn that god is or controls the brine?(not exactly clear, there’s a god cup in the ocean hidden by the brine), and god proceeds to put the brine into the sky because she’s mad you’re not playing your part. God then becomes a bigger brine dragon after some plot, then you cutscene kill her and good job the end? Idk it just feels…idk how it feels.

The world is a crazy mixed bag, because the world in 1 exists mainly for quest destinations- of which there were many unique and cool ones, and a few extra areas outside of that. The open world was just a means to an end
DD2's world on the other hand is way bigger and more geared towards you spending more time there, but it's padded to hell and back with the worst trash mob encounter frequency I've literally ever seen and it has genuinely nothing to find to the point where quests mostly just send you back and forth between settlements
Also the pathfinder isn't necessarily god and might just be a messenger, the same way the seneschal in the first game(and Rothais in this game) is just a steward of the cycle and not 'God' god

    • @TheStraightestWhitest
      @TheStraightestWhitest 2 місяці тому +1

I got good news for you then, it's because you didn't understand the plot.
DD1: You replace God, then give your pawn your old life as a man.
DD2: God discovered that he wasn't the sole power in all of creation, so he threw a child tantrum and defaulted in his duties. He started killing who would be his replacements in an attempt to rule forever so he wouldn't have to abide by what he assumed were The Watcher's schemes. The Watcher as a result took over his role, but without the nuance of humanity. This is why Arisen and Seneschals had to be humans/beastren, they understand the world and what makes it tick. The Watcher does not. He's a cosmic power disconnected from humanity. All he has is cycle = good. So he perpetuates it the only way he can; by laying his will onto everything. He forces it. He pre-ordains everything that happens. Nobody within his cycle is free, because, as the man himself explains; no one can step outside of their given role lest the entire tale unravels.
Enter our Arisen, whose will is so strong that they can somehow break through the Watcher's predetermined outcomes and even grant this ability unto their pawn. The Watcher didn't lie. It does exactly what he said, and unravels creation slowly because they're stepping out of the line the Watcher has drawn. Thing is, it only undoes The Watcher's part in creation, which was not originally made by him, but rather as he explains it formed out of nothingness by itself. So the Watcher is slain because he did not predetermine the actions of the Arisen or their main pawn, who worked together to slay him. And when the Watcher dies, his unnaturally perpetuated cycles come undone, leaving the world and mankind true free will. Now nobody shapes their destiny. No Seneschal. No Watcher. Just humanity and the beastren. They have to do it themselves now. It's a hopeful message that expects the best from humanity.
Both games are about free will shaping everything. In the first game the world was upheld by Arisen using their wills as kindling to keep creation flowing as the Seneschal. In the second game, will was the means through which a well-intended but tyrannical cycle in which nothing could make choices of their own was broken, allowing free will to rule everything instead, for good or bad.

I thoroughly enjoy myself in the game. I like the exploration aspect in particular. Because there are actual things to discover and not just dead ends with nothing in it. My issue with the difficulty isn't so much that you can overgear, it's that you automatically overgear on a normal playthrough. I didn't even take a completionist path through the game, and found that my level/items completely trivialized the strongest enemies by the end of the game. I was explicitly trying to avoid min-maxing, and simply by using random shop gear and casually engaging with the enhancement system was enough to blow away every challenge. I like being able to create my own challenge in a game, but I'm also not a fan of when the only challenge in a game is self-imposed.
I find this in contrast to the first game, where by the end (including everfall) you had to put substantially more thought into gearing, whereas now it seems like a complete afterthought as far as game balance is concerned. I really liked the difficulty of everfall/bitterblack, not mindnumbingly grindy but also made you at least think and get creative. And this is coming from someone who has never touched a Fromsoft game! Hoping they can match that with coming DLC. Overall great game tho.

as a long time Dragon's Dogma fan, in the first one I would argue getting rid of the optimization and stat distribution just throw all that out of the window. It was a very flawed system to begin with, so i argue the REAL optimized strategy that's my tried and true is when you start in Cassardis, choose strider and then go to the general goods store and stock up on throwblast... This is your main weapon. Until you get the helm splitter and passive roll ability you will rarely use your knives or bow. The roll took no stamina and was really easy to chain so you would traverse everywhere easily, and the Helm Splitter could be used to fully negate fall damage from any height as long as it was used before jumping off a cliff. This was such a busted strategy that they removed both throwblast and the fall damage negation of helm splitter. As for Dragon's Dogma 2, I still believe that the strider, now separated into the thief vocation is the best and quickest raw DPS with the least amount of risk. Skull Splitter is the hugest dealer of damage in the shortest amount of time especially once you get to Battahl where the weapon upgrade path focuses on raw Strength and Defense. But at the end of the day of you don't want to listen to some shmuck on the internet, just use what you love and whatever feels best for you, it's all about your own journey and the variation you choose on separate playthroughs if you choose to new game plus or just overwrite your save.

    • @Nothuplay
      @Nothuplay 3 місяці тому

p much. the basic damage calculation formula is just bad.
It takes (almost) your pure "attack value - enemy defense value = damage done". Which means the moment your attack eclipses enemy defense your dmg starts to multiply (there is some fall off obviously but genuinely not a well thought out dmg formula). And then you have explosive damage, which doesnt care about armor values and does flat damage for the entire game so its superior to any type of damage for about 80% of the game/level progression. (So Throwblasts, Blastarrows and that one Strider skill will allow you to beat ALL content in the game from lvl1)
This is thankfully fixed with DD2

The stat distribution is kind of an old school relic, can result in semi-bricked builds and also discourage people from trying various vocations in same playthru. It makes the levelling part a massive chore, especially for Mystic Knight.

Since I had a lot of time on my hands without games to play between now and Elden Ring DLC and my PC specs are not high enough to have a good DD2 experience, I decided to try DD1 Dark Arisen 'cause a lot of reviewers mentioned that the second game is basically just the first game but bigger and with better graphics.
And I'm glad I did that because I don't think I would've enjoyed Dragon's Dogma were it not for the fact that I wanted to be entertained. Like, other games hook you and entice you and Dragon's Dogma feels like it wants and expects you to entertain yourself using it's systems. The story is meh, the vocations are cool in concept but a bit rough in execution, the open world is empty and overpopulated with the same enemies at the same time and only big bosses are somewhat interesting.
I'm still having fun and there's a certain charm to the game but I'm not exactly feeling why a lot of people consider it a classic aside from some wacky ideas.

the Hydra and the Gazer are the only two boss enemy types missing from the original game (not including DDDA Expansion content), and the only regular enemies not in DD2 from the base game of DD1 are the Gargoyles, and the Giant Undead. Dragons Dogma 2 has more enemies and enemy variety than the base game of DD1 did, and the DLC for DD2 is going to be adding more, and likely be larger than BBI.

I really liked the narrative and the themes regarding motivation and stagnation of the first game, but the second one seems to be very all over the place. It felt like it had nothing to say and nothing interesting to add to the setting while trying to blatantly copy paste the setting.
It honestly felt like another Dark Souls 3 to Dark Souls 1. A cluster fuck on top of a game that was very straight forward with its story and themes.
Exploration wasn't super rewarding in the first game and I feel like the second one manages to do it even worse. The rewards in the first one were pulled from a pool of gear appropriate to that zone so that if you wanted to try another class you might pick up a weapon that would be a decent sidegrade. I swear every "quality" chest reward is a wakestone or a shard in the second one.
Also every fucking enemy being a little princess that gets a DMC style Stinger, that they love to spam and dash across space and time to knock you over for 3 business days is fucking aids.
Music is also extremely forgettable. Hearing the Cassardis theme makes me feel at home. Hearing Into Free, Eternal Return or Coils of Light gets me pumped to get back into the game. There is nothing in the second game that pulls the same emotions those songs did the first time I played Dogma 1 and continue to get out of me.

Yeah the upgrade materials thing has always been a weird point for the Fromsoft souls games, even more so because they made it better as time went on until suddenly making it worse in DS3 and Elden Ring. Demon's souls upgrades were pretty unintuitive but I think they all had farmable sources (though some of them were awful, looking at you pure bladestone). DS1 was much the same, they even made chunks easier to get by adding them to the giant blacksmith in one of the patches IIRC. Then DS2 streamlined things even further by having infusion stones replacing a lot of the side path upgrade materials so you had fewer things to farm. Then in DS3 they decided you couldn't farm slabs anymore so you were locked to 8 base game and an extra 7 in the DLC. Finally in Elden Ring they scattered the ability to buy upgrade materials across the entire map, made three more final upgrade materials and to salt the wound made it so you couldn't farm or buy any of them. Granted there is a decent supply of the main one with 15 ancient dragon stones available per playthrough if the wiki is correct but it still doesn't make much sense, at that point let us buy them in NG+ or something.
I can't really agree on the difficulty point though, if you have to limit yourself within the game to have any sense of difficulty then the game is poorly balanced, or at least some parts of it are. Elden ring also has this issue, release mimic tear and black knife Tiche could basically solo the game for you and they were far from the only things that broke the game in half. This kinda ruined the last third of the game for me since I ended up stumbling into a broken build and trying to downscale it just didn't feel good, I wanted to use the shiny things I'd been building all game which also served to amplify the frustration of some later areas since I knew all the delay was being self inflicted.

There was talks on it supposedly having "adaptive" difficulty, so if you dont die often the game will become more challenging. I spent the longest time not dying to anything and i didn't feel that the games difficulty changed at all, there was this awkward moment when i started realising that some of the enemies that carried over from the first game felt easier to kill in DD2, post game enemies in DD1 and bitterblack felt more challenging than all of the enemies in DD2...
I thoroughly enjoyed the game overall but i wish there was an option to turn on a "hard" mode...

    • @hwoarang0001

You can do this by not having a mage and not using the OP abilities like formless feint. I know this isn't the perfect answer, but the game has it's own sort of dynamic difficulty that you the player can adjust. You'd be surprised how difficult the game is when you play it without someone that can heal you constantly. I really think the mage just exists to help struggling players. Once you remove them from the party the game changes quite a bit. Formless feint, the shield from mystic spearhand, etc etc are just not well balanced in the sense that someone optimizing will just easily abuse them to win, but is well balanced in that struggling players can use them as a crutch while better players can use opt to use more interesting skills in unique situations.

The way I've always seen DD's leveling system is like this. You can minmax if you want. There are tools out there if you want to 1 shot a creature. But at the same point if you just play what's interesting to you and bounce around you'll be fine as well. When you reach around the triple digits in levels you should be strong enough to handle most of the game without sweating.
It's like having 45 million dollars VS 5 million dollars. In the long run it's not that big of a difference if the world is balanced around people having only 1 million dollars.

As I finally listened to this video, let me add in a small thing with the, "chest is too high for me to grab" problem. This is in no way a, "this makes it better, so it's fine" just a cool thing I noticed as I've been playing. If you have a mage or a sorcerer pawn, and you see one of those situations where you can't reach this certain object, you can actually tell your pawn to "go" and if you're by the chest, they will float up, and open it for you. Had one even kick down a ladder for me. Just a surprising thing that I actually liked that they did.

And if you disable quest tracking it can help to get them to actually do that for you since more often that not, telling them to "Go!" just makes them start heading towards the quest location instead of actually where you're pointing unless they have specifically asked whether they should try to make their way up to the unaccessable location or not.
It can unfortunately be a bit iffy whether a pawn actually wants to try to get to those areas or not in my opinion.

They simplified the armor and clothing system, boo.
They put so many fights into the open world now your foot travel is walking from one fight to the next one twenty feet away, even so tightly packed you'll have four way fights break out.
The stats level up based on vocation was never really that bad as long as you max out all vocations and then just play the way you like.
