Hi Ginger, I learned traditional ITF from my master 2 years ago. ITF is like my life. But after my master went back to his country, I stopped training. Your taekwondo techniques look very much like what my master taught me. I am so glad to watch your video because that reminds me of my master. And I can learn ITF again! Thank you for those awesome videos!!!
I try my best to and reply when i can :) Have you checked out my spinning hook kick tutorial as that should help firstly? I also have an how to improve leg control which increases muscular endurance and dexterity in the leg to help with lifting the leg :) No problem and good luck :)
No problem :) I know about both methods as i am never narrow minded. It does have advantages for reach, wrapping around, etc but the way i look at it is if you were to sit down and heel the floor a lot more pressure is put into the foot and ankle joint when pointing the foot forwards. When you flex your foot everything is tighter and stronger and when you hit the floor there is way less pressure.
@Aden YANG I appreciate you saying that. Thank you :) No parrys aren't in Taekwondo. They are from my kickboxing training. I guessed you meant that and I do traditional ITF :)
Hi quick question I am returning to tkd after 9 years off they let me retain my belt at my new school however I am refreshing all the basics until im ready to grade. Im struggling with hook kick especially after many years off is there anything you can recommend to me to help my body remember
That's great! Keep going over the motions and stretch as your muscles will get used to the kick again. Follow the advice in the video to improve technique and good luck :)
If you continue watching (at about 5mins in) i do explain if you want increased power and inflict a higher amount of damage then you make a bigger motion. The part you are commenting on, i am talking about light/semi contact which is about speed so you make it short because it's faster. Hope you understand that i can't just explain one version, that would be narrow minded of me. Thank you :)
I'm glad you think that and i appreciate your support. Thank you :) I have been training over 8 years. I still try to improve technique and make it efficient as possible for each situation so i don't consider them mastered. A few styles including Wing Chun, Thai Boxing, Kenpo, BJJ and a couple of others. No problem :)
No problem and I'm glad you like them :) That's unfortunate but i like your determination :) I have stretching tutorials up so try and follow those and if they are too difficult to do because of your hip, then simplify it or miss it out. Good luck :)
Cool :) Will be making a spin hook kick tutorial soon which will probably be better for tricking as it's easier to flow to other techniques. Thank you :)
Thank you :) I'm glad you do and that they have helped :) I have a tutorial on that so follow the pointers, keep working on it and i'm sure you will improve. Good luck :)
No problem :) It could be several reasons. The most common are kicking too early, too late, body positioning, etc. I'd have to see it to say specifically though. Good luck :)
Awesome videos!!! I've been teaching TKD for about six years now and yours are about the most concise and simple methods of doing these complicated maneuvers I've seen. They don't just show me a better way to perform the movements, i.e. physics, etc., but they show me a better way to teach the movements than before. Thank you!
In my opinion it's best to put your hand on a wall and practice standing so you train the base leg as well as the motion of the kick. Sitting down is still good for understanding the motion of the kick and to see where you are going wrong. Really appreciate you saying that. Thank you and good luck :)
Well if it doesn't work for you, don't use it but never disregard it as it is an extra kick in your arsenal. I find i catch opponents a lot with this kick as it is deceptive. If it is used off the lead leg and doubled up from a side kick it is quite effective. In the Olympics they have been using the lead leg a lot more and i'm sure you will see them start to hook kick from the side kick or faint and go into it. This is my opinion though of course and you are entitled to your own :)
I appreciate you saying that. Thank you :) I'm sure you will get it down with improved flexibility and practice my friend :) No problem and i'm glad you think it is well explained. Thank you :)
Also, if you are hitting a target or boards there is less surface area so it digs in and causes more damage if you are accurate. Neither is wrong, it's just a matter of opinion. It's only wrong when you don't hit with the heel or flat of the foot for reach. Hope that helps my friend :) I use both. Flexed for destruction and pointed for reach as i mention in the video. Do you have any other questions about it?
hi I do... so i always heard to protect achilles you hit with the heel yes but always point the toes, never flexed, in kickboxing. so maybe that was wrong?
This is the best hook kick tutorial out there. Thank you so much. Love all the different uses of the hook kick. Because it was my hardest one starting out, I’m going to make it into my signature kick ;)
Your tutorials are amazing!!! You can see so much thought and preparation went into them. They cover pretty much everything you need to learn and master the kick.
Ok man, I know you read a lot of comments saying thanks and probably you get tired of responding to them so you don't have to respond to this but I really mean it. I'm a green belt so far and I receive praises from my master often about how quick I dominate new kicks being taught to me. As I said on my previous comment, this kick was the only one giving me problems, it was like I couldn't put any power behind it. But after watching your video, I discovered what I was doing wrong or rather what I was not doing and it was exactly what I needed to put more power behind this kick. I trained yesterday and told my master I wanted to work on my hook kick and he was very impressed with my progress and I told him about your channel. He is not a guy that uses the computer a lot but he said he definitely was going to check out your channel to see your vids and maybe recommend it to the other students (I did that already). All this long post was just to say thank you, you rock.
Another incredible tutorial - thanks so much for breaking this down. I lack the flexibility to go for this during sparring, but having the bio-mechanics of the kick explained is invaluable and gives me something to build to. Thanks again!
Im glad that my people spread tkd in the uk if it wasnt for a man like this guy right here i wouldnt have been able to understand this kick correctly thank you so much dude
First I want to say how impressed I am on the fact that you actually get back to people and do it very fast. I normally don't get responses. I do have another question, but with the spinning version. I'm 40 yrs old and took a big fall trying to the spinning hook. Not sure what I did wrong or if it's my lack of flexibility, but I was wondering how when spinning for any kick, do you not favor the heal. Seems hard for me to not be on my heal when I have to lift my leg on a spin. Thanks.
I remember the actor Jerry Trinble who was a taekwondo and kickboxing practitioner that still holds the world record of 118 mph the fast time doing the `hook-kick'. With a lot of leg training, stretching, getting the body strong and most of all be very patient when executing it. I believe it can be a lot more power to the hook kick and the jump hook kick. I am a practitioner in Southern style Chinese boxing Kung fu as well as a scholar of different martial arts practices. I notice there has to be a strong stands when being able to get a lot of speed and power when performing the hook kick which takes a lot of time with good training. Thanks for the upload GingerNinjaTrickster. I can not wait to see more of your awesome videos. One day when my martial arts be at perfection I plan to do some videos of the skills that I know and do a demo like you did. Keep up the good work GNT. Thumbs Up at you man.
Thanks for the tutorial mate, I just recently started taekwondo and since i'm from a small school my master does 1 all belt class so i usually don't get this kind of detailed information it's really helpful.now hopefully i can use this information to improve my kicks.
As a kyuokusin guy, I reckon this kick leaves you wide open to leg kicks because of the bladed stance, lacking in power and it takes a crazy amount of t i me t ok master. But I love it. Why? Because from the targets point of view, everything is backwards. It comes from the opposite side to get a front round kick and the 'hook" means it is not limited by the extension of the knee - it can get in behind an attempted block. And because so few fighters can do it, it has great surprise value. Great tutorial and technique, well done
thanks..GNT I'm really struggle with this kick your tutorial are best on you tube and also you are the best martial arts instructor on you tube thanks again for this tutorial GNT :)
GingerNinjaTrickster...thanks for making the videos on kicking tutorials...and other great videos...i learn alot from those videos and yeah...i improve my basics haha...you deserve more subscribers btw hahah...
Great Videos!!! I enjoy your tutorials and have been practicing the techniques you have demonstrated to improve my kicks. I do have problems hitting my target when I try to execute a spinning back heel kick. Any suggestions? Thank you
Thanks a lot for the tutorial. It's so informative and you explain everything so well. I have only just started Taekwondo and was looking for the basic formation but it was great to see all of the variations, uses and progressions that go with it. I must admit that beyond the basic kick was a bit overwhelming however I'm excited to know that with time and practise I shall be doing all of these. Thanks again, much enjoyed :)
Its great you go into such detail plus ways to practice when you lack flexibility. I started Taekwondo at 48 and have really enjoyed mt journey over the past couple of years. Only wish my instructors gave me this level of detail rather than do this.... Hey at least i have UA-cam to fill in the blanks.
Hello! I simply love your videos! They are flawless and a great support for a beginner like me. I just wanted to asksome questions: for how many years have you been training and how long did it take you to master these moves and also what other styles of martial arts are you familiar with? Regards
Stick to your strengths and the range of which you can use your strengths effectively. There are a lot more points I can give but most are obvious and you probably already know a lot with having 7 years of experience. Plus if you didn't do them then it would be too late to change it now due to you fighting recently i'm guessing. Good luck :)
When it comes to the Turning Kick, Hook Kick, and Side Kick the chamber is important, I'm understanding. So how do can you develop faster chambering (in regards to the kick)? Would it be better to do it lying down and just repeat the kick in high reps, or standing with a high chamber and repeat the kick? Asking you because you have great form and speed.
Thanks for the tutorials. I was wondering about flexing the foot. If you look up KwonKicker, he says the opposite. That you could hurt the tendon because it's fully stretched out. And if you keep it in the "slap" position, you can hook the heal behind the ear and do more damage. It makes sense to me, but what do you think? You may have to watch it for it to make sense. Thanks again.
I have been training for just over 8 years. Thank you and i'm glad you liked it :)
best tutorial for this on UA-cam
most people just get it over really quickly but you go into detail .
I appreciate you saying that. Thank you :)
