Learning 540 Hook Kick from a TAEKWONDO MASTER

- So I have attempted a 540 Hook Kick a couple times now.. I recently went to a Taekwondo school to try my luck with Master David Wright, and helped me put together this awesome 540 Hook Kick tutorial for you guys to see! I ended up getting a pretty good version of the kick within 15 minutes!! I barely cut this video at all. I wanted to put it together and make sure I included every nuance of the 540 that I learned to make sure people can put together the 540 hook kick on their own! Davids background is WTF Taekwondo and he is at Master Changs Martial Arts in Raleigh, NC!
If you want to see me learn other tricking stuff like a Taekwondo Bali Kick, or if you want to see me hit other stuff like tornado kicks, jump spin crescent kicks, or more... make sure you subscribe!!

master david be like "yea it's super simple, just focus a bit, loosen up, and now start levitating over the grand canyon"
That dude has crazy flexibility. You can tell in his kicks.
For sure
thats what u need for taekwondo
The control, balance and strength is prime! Along with the height, thats a deadly TWD practitioner.
id say the most important thing for taekwondo is being limber so a master will of course be siper flexible and fast
That’s one key thing I learned from taekwondo; you gotta be flexible to perform the best trick and cheat kicks.
This is the kick you throw in a street fight as the guy is already knocked out and falling, just for that final pizzazz.
And then the crowd goes ooooohhhh while their cameras are going lol
Better hope he falls away instead of in, even out cold he'll put you on your ass with all that spinning and fully airborne shit going on. Planted on ass by unconscious opponent. Cringe...
@@kbanghart yes, then you are youtube famous.
@@wakanakapisihello5655 them's the risk you take to look like a video game, action hero. Lol. I wouldn't do it, I'm just coming up with a suitable use for this technique. You also better be fighting on a nice flat, level, surface.
@@nunninkav5307 woohoo!!
*Me trying to do this kick
My whole body: "you're gonna fall on your ass"
*Me actually fell on my butt
My whole body: "Told ya"
You did great, Sensei Seth. The guy's kicks are crazy
He’s nuts for sure! Thanks bud 🙏
You’re not gonna learn the 4360 Tornado Hurricane Kick?!
Maybe tomorrow! Lol
i know this is a joke and all but I'm a tricking nerd so I have to say it: hurricane kick is actually a 1080
TATSUMAKI SENPUKYAKU!!!!
Also the 36000000 tornado spinning kick
@@napalmjr19 oh boy!
Honestly one of the best tutorials I've seen for this kick
Uhhhh Dave is the real deal. That is first class instruction right there, his tips were all spot on. I never tried those spinning one leg jump kicks for fear of blowing out a knee. Jumping and landing on the same leg while spinning, never seemed safe to me, call me chicken.
Props to David for doing all that with his non-dominant leg to help sensei Seth learn
That kick looks well hard
Super hard, but also way easier once he explained it
I like the way you're setting up your collabs, Sensei Seth!
Please keep it up!
Thanks bud!! Will do
0:23 every time I watch your videos that kick in the intro gets me. so clean
I have watched 9 videos on how to do a 540 kick and this is by far the best one! Great collab Seth love your videos!
Very good really helps me!
This was legit awesome! This was the first tutorial I've watched for this kick that actually made sense. I'm sooo going to try this in training today.
I am becoming obsessed with kicks because of this channel
Thank you so much for the video. This was by far the most helpful step by step explanation that I direly needed 💪💪
That’s the best breakdown for the 540!! I’ve been Struggling for months on this.
i love to see your progress dude nice work!
David is a super good instructor and he makes you feel safe of what he teaches when he demonstrates it because he has a near perfect form since that 540 step up was a good instruction and he lands on the T and he is stable when he lands that's commendable and he also made the close-in open-up or tuck-in tuck-out his habit I can hope for this much proficiency 100 years later
Very good teaching!
Someone send this to Juji, Brian, or Andy Le to challenge them!! Tricking and sparring lol
Man that would be fun
Truth
Gg
Amazing video! Can’t wait to go to class and try this. I’ve been working on 540s for awhile now and I think this video will help me out a lot
By far the best tutorial I have seen on this, I learned it in half an hour while with other videos, I couldn’t do it for years so I gave up
Sheesh, where were you when we learned this the first time! My old instructor had us already in the air by the time our ankles crossed on that first step, and it took me weeks to figure out how to untangle my feet in time to get the kick off and have my feet hit the ground before my ass did. (I cheated and just kept my insteps together, but that meant under-rotating and making it into a diagonal-downward hook kick. The board broke, but the examiner was clearly not pleased)
Super dope. Helped me tremendously. Thank you
That 1st kick was super clean i shouted wow in public. Lol
U can see the excitement as he kept doing it after he got it right u love to see it keep it up🤜
Beautiful thank you to both of you masters hope I can get this down sooner or later
Going to learn this. After 15 years of training for bone breaking leg kicks I think this will be a fun kick
Great video
Getting through the entire collection of sensei Seth videos
It's a great tutorial for beginners who is struggling with 540 kick.. And i really like the idea of that non kicking leg remaining straight...
today was the day i did it the first time after practicing and watching your video over and over again!! Thanks and greetings from Germany!!!!
I love how you shit on TKD but you always be hangin out with us 😂
Totally forgot to leave a comment but here you go my man 😂👍🏼
Excellent video, learnt so much from this, thanks! 👊
Ohh boy, you're amazing. Was so fast for you amazing
finally!!! thank u so much for this highly requested vid!!
Sure thing!
man, you're doing so many awesome stuff
Amazing!! Thanks 🙏
My all time favourite kick
All this kind of kick are all about find the correct setup. Everyone have one and do not work the same way for everyone. Keep that in mind 👌🏼💪🏼 awesome video 🙏🏼💯
You learnt ir perfectly Sensei Seth, amazing!
Thank you for bringing this taekwondo guy
That was sick, helped me a lot
Well done!
I stared at the screen for more than 6 minutes
Ah dang!!
what
Nice... Good luck 👍
wow!! this is one of my best kicks
Love or hate tkd, these guys are super flexible and light on their feet which can become a huge advantage in a real life situation. I currently take BJJ and did some kickboxing for a year prior and stretching is not something that is mandatory rather than suggested in these schools(during your own time). If it weren't for tkd in my younger days, I would be much less rounded martial artist.
Obviously a good instructor. Has a simple system to teach a complex move.
Awesome stuff! The video was great and really helped me out in my taekwondo. You rule sensei OSU!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!!
That is such a great kick, good work Seth!
Thanks bud!!
I like how you're trying to implement as you learn, cause thats how we try to learn too
Exactly 🙏 trying to make the transition be as smooth as possible
Great collaboration.
Thank you!
TAEKWONDO IS SUCH AN AWESOME LOOKING MARTIAL ART
Yeah i call that perfection💪🏼👍🏼
This kick is awesome. Definitely something I am going to learn just to look cool
this is awesome
Thank you for loving Taekwondo
8:57 Closer tight your right arm on your armpit when spinning.
Swinging your arms will help you turn and keep your balance.
That's how we Koreans learn the 540 Hook Kick or other spinning kicks.
9:28 Your right arm is too far from your side when spinning.
David's arm too though.
Lookin forward to all that stuff
👍👍
i waas like "c`moon mannn, you can doo itt!!!!" amazing!! nice one broh!
idk how, but with his instructions bout the 560° hook kick, i learned how to do the tornado kick perfectly without mistakes, Sensei Wright is a miracle
Thank you for this video his
Thank you to that guy🥰
The kick is very nice, good for practising mind and body
MAN!!!! This is a hard kick to get down!! But I’m understanding the breakdown that y’all gave me! And I have gotten way better than where I was. I just got to get it in my head that jumping and landing on the same leg is ok. Cause I’m scared that I mite broke something and that’s keeping me from jumping higher to do the kick. But I’m keep at it until I get this kick perfect!!! Thanks Masters!!!
Yeaaa that’s the tough part
But Master Wright repeated its "not that difficult" but Seth whose been train I ng a couple months can't quite perfect it. So is Wright dissing Seth?
It's actually the best instruction from David, that I've seen yet, however I always taught you must return immediately to same location or fighting stance and flailing you leg out plus being out of balance in finishing kind of makes it mostly unusable
Yes, I have been working on trying to do a 540 roundhouse for my extreme chuck form!
Oh sick!! Good luck!
Ahh, Was like watching a beautiful newborn dear learning to walk for the first time. Congratulations you did it. Soon you will be majestic. Then shot by hunters, mounted and admired for all time.
I’d like to see them try and hunt me
@@SenseiSeth I can so see Mike as Elma Fudd.
awesome video, as per usual!! really nice slow mo
Thank you!
Oh,men,excelent tutorial
what an amazing master of taekwondo! great vid sensei seth!
He’s awesome!! Thanks 🙏
Sensei Seth lmao i do taekwondo and i cant even do a spin hook very well XD. but i try lol
This is the first time I’ve understood how to do this kick.
👏👏👏
This kick is my dream
Woooow i love taekwondo!!!!
Amazing
Very nice sir
please make video on 900 kick
Nice trick of kick
Dude I'm so jealous there's no taekwondo schools anywhere near where I live. I've always wanted to learn how to do this kick.
Awesome kick....
The 540 kick is cool but can you do a 720 flying butterfly wheel dragon crescent kick?
I think not.
I absolutely can... maybe
Now that is a douche bag
I just watched Cobra Kai and now of course I can do that! SMH 🤦
@@SenseiSeth nice point man. It is like in hardcore mountain biking also(downhill and dirtjump) wherein if you believe you can not do a certain routine for the first time in your mind, it is the moment that you lost. But if you believe that is possible and with constant practice and passion, a certain skill is attainable especially knowing that you have colleagues that already achieved it.
Next is the 720° kick, Nice video dude
still practicing that, hope i can perfect it
Oh great 😌😌 I can learn it very easily.
I through before to see this video it will hard to learn
waiting for the day you say "subscribe or i'll 540 hook kick you" ;)
also a few tips for your 540,
1. like he said ,jumping on the spot is super important, you almost want to drill the single leg jump as a separate drill eg. step forward, jump and land on the same spot
2. rely less on your step and initial spin for rotation, it's what's throwing your body off balance. focus on the jump, and use your arms to bring yourself around to hook kick position
3.your posture on the spin is affecting your balance, if you can keep your body as upright as possible until the hook kick part, it'll be more stable during your spin
4. minor detail but you'll also notice your friend tucks in his non kicking leg waaaaaay more on the jump than you do, i'm not sure why it's important, but i've ended up doing it anyway
Haha it’ll be a long time before that happens 😂😂 those are awesome tips!! Thanks my friend!
There’s technically two ways to do this: the vertical spin or the double pump. The vertical spin is where your body stays upright the entire time. This usually makes it harder to open up your hips to do a proper hook kick, so most people who do the vertical spin will do a crescent kick instead. The double pump is the one where you tuck in your non kicking leg. For this one, you usually treat it like a 540 round kick but without the round kick, hence the chambering of the non kicking leg. People who double pump tend to lean back more, which makes it easier to open up your hips for a better kick but can also take away from your balance.
@@tristantsang4325 yeah I don’t double pump cuz I keep jumping backwards when I do. But on the vertical spin I do lean back when I stick my leg out for the hook, so.... best of both worlds?
@@lightxxatu yeah, it's just a really big preference thing. Personally I like to double pump because it helps me get more height so I have more time to spot. Plus, it's good practice for other spinning moves that aren't completely vertical and go off axis, like the 540 round or sideswipe
Great video can’t wait for the sparring and fight talk
👏👏👏
That was insane that you learned it that fast
watch gnt's tutorial on 540 hook. Not necessarily to learn from but to understand the different ways of doing the spin in the air. In your video you're learning what gnt calls vertical spin 540 hook. try comparing it to the taekwondo version. You'll notice that it look a lot different to the other technique. For that harder version learning the 540 roundhouse is absolutely necessary. It teaches you getting that hip over the kicking leg and not around it
Really cool video, will give this kick a go myself. But in future could you get a behind view as well please 😊 Can be a little tricky following foot placements when your instructor is facing you
That looks cool and it looks fun to do, especially once you got it I bet!
Satisfying trick to get!
So cool that Steve-O from Jackass is so skilled in Taekwondo
I don’t see the correlation tbh lol
There was a short clip of Steve-O trying to Wrestle Holly Holm. It goes exactly as you would expect.
amazing tutorial! Got it! :)
That’s awesome!!
Love all the vids including this banger
Thanks my friend!
@@SenseiSeth omg omg omg sensi seth called me his friend😂
😂😂😂 don’t make me take it back. Kidding
Where do you live to be near these amazing instructors? Also my Thai boxing student is going to have a good laugh watching me try to relearn a spinning hook kick let alone a 540 hook kick 😂. It’s good to show your student that the teacher is also just another student.
very high level kick
Great
I wanna learn that kick also!!
This is actually better explained than ginger ninja trickster.
i used to teach at master chang’s martial arts and the few things i can say about the 540 kick is that you wanna focus on your hand and knee up synchronization is key. secondly you wanna know when to lift your knee up for the lift of the 540
Makes sense! That’s dope
This helped me alot ....my stepping 540 is same as yours😅
Nice!!
i like this video format
Thanks! More to come
