You may never understand how much it helps us to see you spend 3-4 days sanding a single area on a boat. When us amateurs find ourselves sanding, etc. for what seems like for-freaking-ever and our wives are asking WTH we are doing out there, we take comfort in knowing an experienced pro spends a huge amount of time doing the same thing. You have struck a perfect balance between showing us too much and not enough; the time-lapse and discussion does help us get a feeling (ugh!) for how time-consuming this process is without making us relive our mega-hours of sanding too much. Great job, Andy!
Thank you for your videos. Alot of guys like me that have skills can do our own work but dont have the knowledge. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience to help guys like to do our own work. Your videos are much appreciated.
its 4 am here and i get to start my work day with this video... better than coffee!!! :) -plus, everyone should leave a comment to help the channel because comments boost the video in the youtube algorithm.
We have no idea! Kidding! But a guy with your business ethics in every industry is exactly what we need! I enjoy watching your show learning things about process flow etc, great stuff! Your selfless desire to both share and learn is why I watch. Thank you.
I found (and I've done a lot of sanding) on complex curves and radius is to use scrap Styrofoam sanding blocks. Just shape the foam and put a sticky backed piece of sandpaper on it and it sands uniform shapes. Just a suggestion. Love your show.
Sir, I don't own a boat at this time but when I do I will be utilizing the knowledge you have put forth in your videos & publications. And I want to thank you, I look forward to your videos, they make my sunday mornings. Have a very blessed day with your family.. :)
The Totalfair product looks like it is awesome to work with. I agree with you that the Festool sander guard saves the gouging of adjacent surfaces. Andy, try their soft transition pads which allow you to shape the rounds more easily. You will still have to sand the corners by hand but the transition pads will allow you to create a really nice fillet.
I love the level of detail and craftsmanship you are showing! I highlights the lack of perfection and detail that was put into some work I had on my Parker some years back...... I would say it was about 70% of the quality and finish detail you are employing here! The old boy that did my work took a more of a "That's good enough" approach! I fact I had to go behind him and fix some of his crappy work when he decided he was done! I just love your work! That boat is going to be better than new!
The tongue-depressor filleting of fairing material brought back memories of the PT11 dinghy I built last winter. Russell Brown at PTW advocates a very similar approach in a variety of diameters.
Well explained as usual, Andy. Thanks! I gave a thumbs up to the suggestion of doing more "voice overs", but since I have no idea how much work the video editing requires..., it wasn't meant to be critical, just suggestive. Sorry if it seemed otherwise. Have a hreat week!
Boatworks Today 😊😊😊 finger sander instead of ttch ttch, fink if you got one may as well take the chance, seemed to work out really good. I always say after an 'eternity' sanding cos that wot it feels like. Great work and whatever floats yer boat😎😎😎❤️❤️❤️
Digging your videos andy.. you have given me motivation to work on my 24' Sea Sprite.. but its winter in Wisconsin so spring it is..😄 Keep up the great work and happy thanksgiving to you and yours
Nice job!! Cant wait to see building the hatches, please do as detailed vid as you can. This is one task you dont find a lot of content on (except your previous hatch building vids ;).
Doing a 13’6” Bayliner. Did a lot of grinding and cleanup of previous owners “REPAIRS “. Question, I’m thinking of either filling the ribs with Total Boat fairing compound OR CSM as the hull has been ground pretty thin and want to gain a lot of strength. They also did a lot of beach landings so the keel also needs repairs
I have really enjoyed the series, however I am frustrated as I cant find the episode where the transom on the bertram went back in? Really wanted to see that after all the prep.
Hi thank you for all your videos, I am redoing a small boat and was thinking of making a fish box from frp panels. Can the frp panel’s be joined together with fiberglass resin?
I am looking to calculate the amount of alexseal topcoat needed to paint my boat in its entirety 2 colors outside, cloud white deck and topside, with whisper gray sides and accents. I really want to use this product but at the price I cant really afford extra laying around my garage. is there a semi accurate way to calc it based on square footage? I am also looking for suggestions for bottom paint for a fresh water only boat. Enjoy the heck out of your videos by the way :)
Prediction: One day, Andy will have in his shop a glass table and basic vacuum pump equipment to make his own stress-skin panels, out of foam, balsa or even plywood cores. Polyester and vinylester resin works fine. Here in S. Africa, they never heard of Coosa Board as they make all of their own custom panels, in nearly every boat yard.
One is poly based (bondo) and the other is epoxy based. Doesn't mean much until it comes time for high gloss finishing ;-) Poly shrinks much more which over time will create a ripple effect in the final appearance
@@BillPhillips4 yes. You can use polyester over polyester or epoxy over polyester, but polyester will not typically adhere properly over epoxy. You should always try to use like materials.
Andy, Please, after near 4 years of buying a dud boat and multiple repairs,I am close to actually seeing some water time, but i need to paint sections of the hull(Lowest point) upside down on a quite low trailer, any advice??
Are you ever tempted to use a product like evercoat formula 27 for the 20 minute sand time? I understand that you would need to maintain a polyester laminate all the way through but do you see a downside to going that route?
Andy, you didn't explain or maybe I didn't see it; the drain hole in the cooler lockers. Did you treat the Coosa board inside the radius or just leave it raw. Is there a chance of the board to soak up water?
Thanks for yet another great video, Andy! Will this fairing compound be any good with polyester and gelcoat/topcoat, or is there a polyester based product similar to this?
Not sure yet :-/ Is going to be an awesome boat when done, but on the other hand it would potentially pay off the shop which would be really nice not having that over my head any longer.. Going to let my Girls decide lol!
I am a boat junkie too always working on the one that we have. It is it Dusky 233 W.A.C. we watch your show every Sunday when it becomes available thanks for sharing the wealth of information that you have us junkies really appreciate it.
Is the total boat fairing like awl grip all fair? With all fair you can use t0006 thinner to bring the fairing to an easier troweling consistency for finicky areas,.
@@boatworkstoday i was taught that by an old painter that painted the first Hatteras's with awlgrip many years ago. with tooo6 you can reduce the awlfair to a spray able consistency when you have many light scratches to fill, that aren't deep enough for a trowel but to many to ignore.

I m already to lay glass on my glen L trawler one off. The most is ready release agent is on but now...what epoxy shoul I use...you are using total boat and Mads is total Westsystems. Which one of the two eo yo recommend
Both epoxies are very comparable, I wouldn't say that one is 'better' than the other. The TB is typically less expensive by the time you figure in shipping costs :-)
I kinda think that 7:40 isn't really a voiceover, but that Andy's just not looking at the camera while he's talking. I agree, though, that sometimes the time lapse could benefit from a voiceover description vs. the music (if Andy thinks there is something helpful to say).
A person I work with was telling me that these surface prep items were pretty much nothing more than Xylene...marked up considerably. Any truth to this? I honestly don't have a clue, but it's not the first time I've heard this.
I still fail to see why anyone would use coosa. Its so expensive. What will coosa do that other materials will not? A test I would love to see Andy try is to leave a piece of Cossa and a similar sized piece of marine plywood soaking in a a tank of water for a month or two just to see if the coosa would survive a situation of being permanently wet.
I know this is off topic but... I getting ready to install new through hulls and sea cocks in my 1997 Tashiba 40. I plan to use the Groco PVC backing plates and Groco technical support little resistant to providing specific recommendations on bonding the backing plates to the fiberglass hull. 5200 seemed like the best solution but I see other UA-camrs using thickened epoxy. What is your opinion? Maybe I should do a test? sv-Veritas.us
Given that the material you'll be working with is plastic I'd be inclined to use a structural silicone like Dow Corning 795 or 791. Silicone is about the only thing that will bond with plastic / PVC. Thickened epoxy would be an option as well if you're trying to establish a flat face for the plate to rest against. Ultimately though Groco should know enough about their product to tell you what works and what doesn't :-/
I used 5200on a hatch on the deck of my boat and when i removed it, it kept a little fiberglass with it. When they say permanent they mean permanent haha i was cutting that section of floor out anyway so no big deal for me i think 3m makes 4200 marine sealant thats for applications like through hulls.
Kinda off topic, but I got a leggings commercial coming up 30 seconds into the video. I'm sure there are a one or two soccer moms watching this video, but still it baffles me, why this kind of DIY stuff gets monetized by leggings commercials.

Great attention to detail to sections that are mostly going to be out of sight! It'll look very professional.
There is only one man on UA-cam who has made a living by sanding.

Always interesting! Wonder why Mads never uses this material (coosa)! He does a lot of sanding too though.
I don't think he has access to it in Denmark :-/ As far as I know TB only distributes to the US currently
@@boatworkstoday Didn't Mads just use coosa for the wall between his shower and utility room?
@@geoffcampbell5681 That was foam (because of the thermal insulation properties).
Great job
Apart from the radius parts, the rest looked ready for gelcoat. Is fairing compound really needed? Am I just being lazy?
Nice video. Nice tip with the tongue depressor. Does Total Fair work on metal like Bondo???
Use a multitool with the triangle sanding pad for the corners
didn't have the right paper until now lol!
Third!! That little sander is awsome when needed!!
Honestly I wasn't sure how much I'd actually use that little guy, but it's proving to be a very handy little tool!! Smooth as butter ;-)!

Do you use this epoxy fairing on all fairing even on pol resin?

The back of a handsaw without the handle is the largest trowel that I have.
