    Andy I have been watching your videos for a long time. I love the work you do and the way you explain things. As an amateur I reference back to your videos very often when I get confused or I am just not sure about something. Thank you so much for all your work that tou put into these videos. Wish I was close enough to volunteer to help and learn from you.

    Andy, you've been a great inspiration and teacher. I completed a rehab of my fiberglass hardtop this past winter and relied heavily on your video series. I also spent several hundred dollars on Total Boat products based on your recommendations. I couldn't be happier with the products and the results! Just wanted to say thanks!

    I really like this format of teaching! Nice to see concepts applied to a test sheet that is generic enough for all types of repairs. That being, said I always enjoy watching your projectsthat are specific to a particular boat too! After watching hundreds of fiberglass repair videos on youtube(good grief, I am lame) I can honestly say your are the most enjoyable and informative content provider! You have provided enough info that i am going to attempt to restore the center consol on my boat this summer.

    Nice vid Andy, what I like about your channel is in addition of the repair method, you take the time to talk about the materials, their uses and application technic. As you say "Thank you so much" :O).
    Cheers from Québec and be safe all of you

    Hello Andy, thanks for all your videos…well done and educational. I have a project to fix a 3”x3” hole in the bottom of my sailboat..scheduled for this coming summer. I saw your videos on epoxy vs polyester resin and whether gelcoat will work with epoxy. I’ve already purchased 105/205, so was hoping to use that to do the repair. I do, however hope to use gelcoat…as I noticed I can buy a colour matching kit on Amazon. Is 3x3” too large a hole ( underwater), to use a epoxy/gelcoat combo?

    In a pinch, you can recut the the teeth in the blades... I was working on installing 3/4" oak floooring and hit a big nail while cutting the door jambs for the flooring to fit under, even through it was a metal / wood blade, it trashed it, didn't have a spare blade, but I carry a set of small files with me and I just recut new teeth in to the blade so I could finish the job and get out of there. Wasn't super pretty looking teeth, because I didn't have the exact pitch file, but I was able to cut the rest of the door jambs. I didn't have time to get to the store before it closed and it would have been a 1 hour and 15 min round trip from where I was.

    I sprayed my whole 25’ sailboat with a gelcoat and for some reason I have spots that didn’t harden. How do fix those tacky spots? Using Hi-Bond gelcoat with wax. Thanks for the videos. They gave me the confidence to tackle this project. Even though I do have some trouble spots, I consider this project a success up to this point. Still have to sand buff so we will see.

    Andy, I got a little confused on the Poly and Epoxy resins.....my question. a 67 Boston whaler 16'7" hull. Below the water line on the keel. What would you use to in the keel for a resin? I will be grinding down the gel to factory glass, adding glass tape then gel coat. I am doing this to have better impact resistance on the keel. Its a small boat for beaching, and I do glide nicely in... and beach it. I ask this because the whole boat is gel coated.

    Ha. I would have needed these advices couple of weeks ago. 😅
    Did some filling for old holes to my boat. Only problem is that fairing compound (I used plastic paddding but seems to be same stuff) is of course much brighter white than my 39 yo boat. Well - it’s ok for now. Maybe complete new coat of gelcoat to the whole cockpit next year. I assume you can use gelcoat like paint? Should I put laminating gelcoat like wet on wet and how thick it should be?

  • @gr8greg
    @gr8greg 4 роки тому +1

    Why did you say to polyester resin works better with gelcoat when you did a whole series of videos showing that epoxy resin actually worked even better with gelcoat? Did you change your mind? In my amateur experience, I've never had issues with gelcoat sticking to epoxy. As you showed in your video series West System states there are no issues with gelcoat. I'm not sure what other manufacturers state, but I guess they would say the same. I refuse to use a porous polyester resin with boat repairs when nonporous epoxy works just as well and most often, better. Can you please clarify?

  • @SailingAngus
    @SailingAngus 4 роки тому

    ok so the polyester fairing compound cures What is keeping the catalyst on the surface for a cure and how would you have to prep for a second coat. If it is wax there could be issues. What does a can weigh ?
    Does it contain talc ? Stuff with talc will sand like butter and is usually easy to spot because it is heavy compared to microsphere filler. Any thing with talc is forbidden in a wet zone. Though it is nice to make your hands slide in to the gloves. Looks seriously light so most likely microspheres according to webpage
    It comes from RI so it should be promoted to work in cool weather. Always had issues with Dura Tec from the desert in California and just had to kick it at 2% or more

    If the polyester fairing compound has a 'wax' in in to make it cure. And then your wanting to put gel coat on top, do you need to do a de'wax'er before or does the sanding take care of that aspect?

    • @elmeradams8781
      @elmeradams8781 4 роки тому

      My understanding is that the wax flows to the surface. When you sand the top layer off, you've removed the wax.

    Andy I absolutely love your videos. It has helped with our decision to buy a sail boat. Just curiousness this product bonds to the spaces between all those grooves? I would have thought you would have to sand completely flat to give the whole surface a good tooth to bite into. I’ve been wondering the same for paint in areas that have non slip. You are the man. And your efforts to help the diy er are beyond amazing.

      WreckDiver99 you can put epoxy over poly. Not the other way around. And when using poly, the only time you don’t want wax in it is when doing multiple layups. Everyone does things differently and whenever I do gelcoat repairs I always use gelcoat with wax in it. Again, just how I do it👌👌

    Generally your videos are pretty good but this ridiculous 10 minute commercial for your sponsors is beyond belief. Your channel was so much better without sponsorship. Now we have to take everything you say with a grain (or maybe a boxful) of salt. Shameless. I don’t know how you manage to sleep at night doing paid corporate ads. You have so much useful knowledge to share it’s a shame we don’t know what to believe or which side of your mouth your talking out of now.
