Personally, I would have cut the burl off and turned it. But that's me.
Same here. Preserve all of the burl!!
Lots of burl bowls with a center saver
Definitely should have cut the burl off.
They've probably done that plenty of times, having the burl incorporated in a tabletop or door with a resin edge will be absolutely beautiful and something different to the norm. A couple of those slabs had a lot of everything.
Me, too! Mind you, these gents could now remove the burl, and the pieces would be a decent thickness for bowl blanks...Not deep bowls, admittedly, but you could get a good size from them, anyway.
Nothing wrong with straight grain walnut!
Not a whole lot to look at is definitely a matter of perspective! Each slice of every log is amazing to us non-loggers!
Beautiful wood! Thank you for sharing! 👌
NIce walnut slabs. Will make some nice furniture. Stay safe.
So I am curious on something, and im not sure if its been ever talked about in videos(bad memory at times). When you flipped that log over to do the remaining cuts, that first cut into it with that cap piece, what generally gets done with that? Does it get used and sold(cheaper because of it being the top like that) or does it get thrown out?
Had to chuckle at you struggling to manually move the log. What the guy doesn’t have in size (stature), he makes up with heart and character! 😂😂😂
I am wondering if that is not an actual burl, but a growth associated with an injury or some thing. I have worked with black locust burl and big leaf maple burl, and they form a cone that goes all the way down to the pith. I did get some Oregon white oak burl once that kind of looked like lava flows, several of them, and it was not solid at all.
Beautiful wood. Great video guys
“We have a high expectation for a rotated crotch.” Sounds like a personal problem…😂
Always good to see Matt’s enthusiasm. I thought they were stunning wood cuts. ❤
I still have to say, that is some of the most beautiful Walnut slabs I have ever laid eyes on. Very nice Matt and Gents.
Sometimes you just gotta try something to see what happens. These are still wonderful slabs and you have gained more insight. Great stuff !!!!
Good stuff Matt, keep ‘em coming, thx man
Massive walnut doors to the castle. Heavy Black iron hinges with really a nice set of iron knockers and handle. Something to bang on and be heard throughout the castle. Would be nice.
@10:28 would make a very nice curved live edge standing desk with adjustable powered legs. Burl, if strong enough, could be a place to set a desk lamp or speaker, etc. Beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful. I’m not sure what I would make with all that wood but it would be interesting to work with.
I'm not sure if i mentioned this before... but a few years back I spotted a ~4' burrel up in a tree about 40+' from the ground! But since it's in a state park... I'm sure nature will eventually reclaim it 😭
I've seen one similar to that about 20' up. It was right on the line of state land and private.(in the middle of nowhere) Without a survey done there was no way to see if it was legal to take.
The arm just doesn't get better.
For all of your thingajigs, whatchamacallits, thingys and whatevers, I am impressed by your ability to describe what you're doing, what you're going to do and why. Your talent to communicate (along with all your other skills) makes your channel so enjoyable to watch! Thank you.
Thanks for another good video, Matt. Sorry if you've covered this, but I'm curious as to why the control cabinet seems to always be open when the saw is running? I see a rheostat or something similar hanging down, but it looks like that could be mounted to, and protrude through, the door.
Motor start stop is on the vfd. Haven’t moved it externally. Probably never will
Gooood afternoon from central Florida! Hope everyone has a great afternoon!
Just had a bit of an idea that you might like.
How's about making an adjustable tilting sled for your saw.
Similar to when you have to put a twisted plank through a planer.
Once you have made your initial cut, turn the lig over onto the sked and adjust the angle to what you might think will give you a nice grain.
I think it would be very cool if you did a video where you cut two logs of similar shapes, but at different angles to show how the grain changes
Matt, how do you determine when to spray the blade? Is there something that you see/hear/feel that tells you that it's time to spray, or is it more about, "eh, I think I'll spray the blade now"?
Also, I thank you for skipping the slow-motion spashes.
Watching for pitch buildup on the blade
It's Burl-esque Time!
That is stunning wood
Still have the best laugh on UA-cam. 😂 Beautiful wood
Been a woodmizer sawyer for over 30 years now. Two LT40 mills worn right out. Few years ago bought a lx150 and now just about to order a new 250. About the cookies...as a log home builder I want to mention the cookies make excellent stair steps. Since trees basically don't shrink in their length just cut to rise height and stack. My spiral has 33 steps and is stable with no need for big mortise in the center post log. The check is turned in and is hidden...
Time for another installment of Slab-tastic Saturday!!!
2:42 That's a -1 point for driving 🤣
Been lookin foard to this one after last video when you teased us about this
😛😛😛😛😛😛❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Long time absent but here I am again. Very interesting, very different way to cut a crotch log. Not sure if it suits me but it's different. Cheers, Don from South Australia.

OR...
Mill Ton Burl
what, now using a mask? and no compresed air/vac or catch basket for all the sawdust yet. Duke Duke Duke of Burl.
Some people don't understand heavy equipment till you hit the wrong button and the wood slab goes throw your chest. Not as cool as you standing beside it as it moves away and you have room to stand back but refuse because you are cool. Look at me 9:56. I know it hurts
I've been watching for years. Something I noticed even back at the old house is the accumulation of sawdust to the side of the saw. What do you do with all that and how often do you have to clean it up?
Oh my gosh! You used the peavey! I had decided those were just for decoration!😝
You were not impressed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Matt, I noticed on your machine that you don't use a water drip to cool the blade. Is that because the length of the blade you don't have to or am I just not seeing the drip.
Burl on the side of a slab, I don't get it. Wasted burl, not so nice slabs. Thanks for sharing,
Ya, that was disappointing to me. I like your way better Matt.
the badging on the LOGivator is awesome.
This log is one of the best you've cut; the grain is so provocative. Those guys' logs are super nice.
At one point you thought about putting hydraulics on the saw mill to roll the log. Are the logs you deal with too big now to add that to the mill?
How does the hardness of a burl compare to a knot or to regular heartwood
Matt sounded like he did not approve. Was it a mistake to cut it this way?
In my best Arnold voice: "It's not a tuma"
The slabs with the good burls could be bed headboards.
i WANT THAT BURL Lol bowl turning blank
Such beautiful walnut timber!
Do they pay you to cut their logs, give you a slab or is it just for the video that you do this.
As long as I get to see that mill cutting I don't care about the log.
That burl looks like a pimple on the slab. Lol. 😊
Awesome stuff Matt! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Is this going rob a Burlesque show?
Total destruction of old growth tree.
Matts The best !
Did anyone notice the “face” at 8.00 ?
How long does it take for the boards to dry?
Video title is my nickname for my ex-wife
Matt, Have you ever had a belt failure while running a piece? Snapped? Parted? What was it like?
Still running the original belts
Matt - Again as I have said before if you could make two rising 4x4 steel tubes at least telescoping to 36" above bed. two posts as tail /head endstock pins like A lathe- at both ends you could raise and rotate any log easily and stabilize it. the collar would lock heights and a thru screw keeps the tight- Your Bed Frame won't stretch.
A few of those slabs had so much going on, whatever they turn them into will be absolutely stunning, and the rest looked amazing to me. I think you're a little spoilt for choice Matt, lol. You're like a Pagani dealer who thinks a Lamborghini is a bit meh, while the rest of us will be happy with a Honda. Lmao.
After watching 100 or so of these videos this is the first one that I've had a strong opinion on. In my view, it should have been milled to maximize the figure in the burl (I would cut the burl off and mill it separately, there would still be plenty of material left for nice slabs) anything else is a waste of precious material. It's a shame that the burl is going to be an afterthought on some trendy epoxy river table or barn door that the owner will replace in 5 years. The majority of these slabs are awkward shapes that don't do the crotch or the burl any favors. "It's clear walnut, with a tumor" and "there's that, I guess" sums it up perfectly. Anyway, Matt did a great job given the requirements and it was an interesting experiment and enjoyable video.
.... and pray tell me, kind sirs, just what's wrong with straight grain walnut ?
Did they say something is wrong?
Nothing to see here. Just perfectly clear straight grained 23" slab of beautiful walnut 😁
wow, if they have any scraps for that, guitar bodies would be great….. I am interested. That first peice you cut off, and then when you flipped it, lots of use for that scrap. Can you cut the small peieces to 8/4"
Was that a cleaning crew lol
Beautiful wood.... these guys are a touch non-plus I think.
still a fun experiment
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
Matt I hope those Iowa corncobbs are paying you well. By the way I grew up in northeast IA and now live in Wisconsin
Good Morning Cremona family...tiling the kitchen
What do you do with all that sawdust? It must get to be quite a large pile. Probably use it for mulch?
Great job!
Name the burl Earle
That was a neat way to do the cuts and I for one don't mind the plain, strait grain sometimes. Not all wood will give us strange and beautitul grain patters, sometimes that simple and strait grain is good as well.
Matt I hope you are charging a premium for the extra work and time
take a shot every time he says crotch 🍻 looks great, thanks for sharing!
Matt was so unimpressed with this log. Love it.
thingamajigs
Thanks
I will have to say that seeing your client standing in the roll zone of the log and the bed of the saw while placing that block and the removal of the first slab was one of the more frightening things I have seen on the channel. If that sucker had rolled..........................
And yet everyone was safe😂😂😂😂😂
Take a shot everytime they say crotch.
I think that burl wants to be veneer.
👍
What were these pieces used for?
What do you get for the cut for the logs that you cut for them. I believe they get a good percentage when they make something.
Not important
Either you cut these logs closer together, or that wrist has been in a cast for a long time!
June 12-16
👋🏻
Was looking forward to the kitchen cabinet build, only to see another log getting cut up.
Gotta get ahead of the edits
It's great right?
Maybe this has been answered before, but why is the mill in the driveway instead of up near the barn?
Infrastructure
@@mcremona Hi Matt will that change now that you’ve got power to the barn?
@thewinenut9800 no, power is only one small piece of the supportive infrastructure
Cuting crotch sideways like that wont show much figure as u see here. The way u always go u will get feather in most of the slabs as u know. If you cut it flat threw tho. U get a crazy starburst feather figure in the whole centre slab! Only get 2 or 3 good ones tho and the rest will be all strait grain. Thats what i have discovered😅
Matt, what's your email?
Check the description ( the last line👍).
@@Fortisnocte149 thank you. Didn't see it at first.
