    I am the director of this film produced in 2015. To bounce back on some of the comments: it took us 3 years to identify the best windows of opportunity to meet these oarfish offshore, in particular at night. There is an interesting sophism which consists in avoiding plural mode when describing legendary creatures: the yeti, the loch Ness monster, etc... oarfish are real, and we met several of them during our dives. Indeed, we dived in an unusual environment, at night, above 2000 meter deep water, during planktonic blooms which attracted the animals that fed on copepods an krill. These dives are risky and required skills and safety protocols. Daylight behavior has been filmed at dawn, just before the animals returned to the abyss. The film exists in 4K, 4K HDR, so this format option will gradually appear on this link.

      Thanks for the new word (sophism) but you kinda did it yourself by connecting the oarfish with "sea serpents." We don't know what ancient mariners were referring to with sea serpents or whether or not it was a completely bored mind just inventing it. But connecting it to these oarfish is like connecting earth worms to cobras. Otherwise great documentary and thank you.

    An impressive documentary. As a youth in Iceland in the winter of 1964 I worked as a new hand on a trawler that brought up one of these creatures from the ocean's depths. At the time my grasp of Icelandic was almost non existent, so didn't learn what its common English name was until the after the birth of the internet, and a bit of googling. I also learned that my trawler was now at the bottom of sea after sinking off Iceland's south coast (the engineer being the only fatality) and that the oar fish specimen we'd caught was now a highly prized exhibit in Reykjavik's Maritime Museum.

      I remember dragging these up occasionally off of the Oregon coast on a trawler I worked on. some of them were big. but they were all very fragile and were pretty tore up so we didn't have much to bring in. my boss called them King Of The Herring.

    • @mercsport
      @mercsport Рік тому +6

      @@steveelder5306 Yes, King Herring. I did wonder what its relationship to a Herring was for it looked nothing like. My trawler was an old style low-freeboard sidewinder and the Oar Fish we hauled in had to be hauled up to the top of its mast to measure its length and there was still a good few feet left trailing on the deck. It was nighttime and in the glare of the trawler's lights its thinness and near transparency was readily apparent. It stopped work whilst the crew posed for photos with it.

      @@mercsport nice! that would be a great picture. yep we dragged a lot of strange critters up off the bottom. I feel bad about the bycatch and don't participate in that fishery anymore. but it was a time that's for sure. you were fortunate to be able to fish with Icelandic masters Bruce.

    We had one wash up on the shore here in Struisbaai Western Cape South Africa two years ago. It was still alive and we tried to put it back into the water but the surf washed it back out again. It was very sad to see it die. Our hands and clothes were covered in what I can only describe as silver glitter from when we tried to put it back in the water. It really is a beautiful fish. Still have photos of that day on my Instagram.

It became spell binding, especially when you employed the purple light! Your risky nighttime diving, coupled with the spectacular camerawork capturing this fish, that out of water, is an unremarkable grey ribbon; yet in the water is so wispily translucent & graceful, was just captivating! Especially being right next to, what I understood to be similar to a giant dinner bell that can be heard for vast distances.... And absolutely forget about doing it at night! The Narrator kept referring to “ocean”. This film took place in the Mediterranean Sea. They are two different types of bodies of water, at least to this arm chair scientist😂
