in my opinion. I saw nightwish live may 10th and make no mistake Floor really is that good live. i think she is the best most versatile female vocalist on the planet right now, a once in a life time talent. and she can growl or scream as well. there is no style that evades her..thx for the react.ROCK ON!
A song where she really needed to (and did, of course) channel a ton of heavy emotions is The Poet And The Pendulum (live at Wembley). This is one of Nightwishs "big three", because its a long one and carries a lot of meaning. Tuomas wrote this after the rather ugly separation of the band from his childhood friend and first singer, Tarja. He got into deep depression but in true artists fashion made an album from it. The "pendulum" is the first song on this album, and thus starts with an ending (of the "old" Nightwish), follows with the catharsis of his emotions, a healing period with the help of his parents and finally a new beginning (with the "new" Nightwish and the rest of the album). Floor as usual puts her range of abilities to good use, which in sum makes this an extraordinary song, certainly one of the best Nightwish has to offer. Subtitles recommended, but not necessary if you want to focus on the singing.
I think she needs to know some other songs first and work up to TPATP. Besides, it's a 20+ minute video to watch, let alone react to. It requires scheduling. Make sure to use the restroom first and bring tissues and water for afterward...
@@jamescurfman3284 I agree. She should watch through some of the better recorded performances with Tarja first (From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era, along with the story behind *that* one.....) sadly good quality recordings were rarer in the early days.
This is from a show where the host has a journey through classical music. He introduced Floor as being the fontwoman for metal Bands like After Forever and Re- Vamp. (And showing some clips of their songs) you should have seen the audience faces before and after she sang 😁😂
In an interview she said she was really bizarrely nervous for this performance, and not at all happy with her performance... it might be fun to check out her 'operatic' live version of "oh holy night"... in Finnish...while 7 months pregnant!
Hi, great reaction again... Please check out her first appearance in Beste Zangers where she's performing Vilja Lied They didn't know much about her at the time, she wasn't well known in the Netherlands before this show, only that she's singing in a metal band, Nightwish of course... They had no idea what to expect... Greetings from Sweden
@@jamescurfman3284 The same is true here i guess. The video doesn't show this, but before her singing she was introduced to the audience as the lead singer of Nightwish with short video clips from their concerts.
Second third or whatever the call for Vilja lead. Played up the leather clad rock chick and Introduced herself with a really outstanding version of the merry widow. It is, if nothing, else super fun to watch the reaction of the others.
Thank you for this. I am no Floor biographer, but I think some people in UA-cam comments overplay her classical training. She never intended to become a classical singer. I think she is just very open to take everything that can help her craft, and I feel that you appreciate that.
Floor didn't want to make a career as an opera singer. She felt it was too restrictive. I love how she uses the techniques even in other vocal styles though.

You really MUST check out a duet of Stabat Mater Dolorosa with Floor and her good friend Simone Simons who is the lead singer for Epica. It is wonderful. :)
I think Floor herself would realy appriciate your analyse and technical remarks. This week she did a interview in Sweden and answered the question; "Do you watch reaction videos?" The answer was interesting and honest. One part was she didn't wath a lot because her more then busy life and when she watched because people broucht it to her attention she was often disapointed in the content. She discribes it better then me. She always discribes herself as a vocal nerd, so very interested in the technical aspekt, she always wants to learn. I think yours fits her critaria perfect. Compliments to you - a real vocal coach!
For a recentish example of her classical voice - and one she is happy with (she re-recorded this as she wasn't initially happy with the recording) - is Shoemaker on Nightwish's most recent album, HumanIINature. There is a great lyric video: ua-cam.com/video/Rjp_DfvJimg/v-deo.html
Hello Bethany, like an artist that mixes colours and uses different brushes to achieve certain effects on a canvas, Floor is, to me, a perfect example of how she creates colour and 'texture ' with her voice. She is truly wonderful! 🤗
For me, Floors Version in my absolutley fav.(After the first time, i see this)i hear many Opera Singer. For me ,Floor is the most emotinal Voice. Ok, only my opinon
Also viel Spaß beim Schauen/Hören.

Her jaw movement is definitely a stylistic choice she allows to come in where and when she wants. Floor is a vocal coach herself and if I recall she has spoken about how she regards jaw movement. She is the epitome of no tension while singing the toughest longest legato lines with and without vibrato, in all different registrations and vocal weights. She clearly can control her jaw movement at will. I hope you will check out many more examples of her incredible body of work. 🙂 I think you might really like How's the Heart (acoustic live), Sancta Tera (Epica feat. Floor) as just a couple
Think she was around 26 at this show. So she was a Metal singer for 10 years, has completed the rock academy and then studied "a bit" musical theater and classic. And btw has started working as a vocal coach too. So yes maybee it's not the "perfect classic technique" but she is still better than a lot "only classical trained " women I've heard
There's a longer version of this video, where Floor is introduced. She tells them she'd been touring with Nightwish for a few weeks now, which makes her about 30. Other than that, you're spot on.
This show was 'designed' to challenge artists to perform outside of their comfort zone and normal style of performing. The episode is from 2010 shortly before had a less fortunate time. Nightwish was not even on the horizon when this aired! The interview was from a show in 2013 (and featured this part)...
@@hermenw.huiskamp8555 what interview do you mean? I've included the link, you can see the introduction and the aria, notice the dress and hair. But Floor has performed this several times, maybe that's what's causing our confusion?
Hello from the Netherlands . Floor Jansen sang an Opera arina in the first episode of Beste zangers 2019 for Henk: Vilia song ( in metal style ) this was the show's first performance and thus the kickoff of the show's 2019 season. Before this first appearance in the Show, hardly anyone in the Netherlands knew who Floor Jansen was ! not even her fellow singers on the benches ! take a good look at the looks and reactions on the couch in the video.
I have Enjoyed Analysis of Floor's Performance. To Me Floor is the Artist who has worked her Vocal Instrument to a Level Competence that has Opened Her to the Choices her Mind Applies to the Art of her Choice at the Time. A "Cadilac" of a Swiss Army Knife of Vocal Talents. Floor is a Personality driven Artist with a large set of the Highest Quality Talents to pull From. I See in Her Performances with Nightwish that she is one of the biggest Fan of each member "Artist" of Nightwish and Each Member seems to be Her biggest Fans too.
Something I think a few folks forget Is that another of Floors great aspects is the way she sings with true emotion. In this song, she is portraying a pouting teenage girl essentially throwing a fit, so I always felt the jaw movement is in keeping with the facial expressions you might expect to see in such a situation.
One of Floor's mutant abilities is the way she flows freely between very different styles/sounds. A talent not so useful in operatic performances, to say the least. Despite that disadvantage, her ability to convey emotion (her other mutant power) still ends up making this very enjoyable to listen to for me personally.
Yes, because she doesn't often do it, and in some songs, she does then doesn't do it, so I agree, I think it's choice. Floor has full control over her voice and everything that goes with that. She never does anything by halves. :)
Floor does a decent job regarding her training, she is going at it with her full technique at the the moment. Your commentary is an oasis in the middle of criticism. Thank you for respecting the singing for what it is: Floor's not an opera singer. But this should be basic fare for a soprano, and I think she's not doing bad at all. Is she doing well? As well as one would expect, an aria when the music is over the top and the melody changes are insane. A proper one.
Hello Bethany, Floor is always looking for color. The phantom was part of a program called beste zangers. In several episode she show her different color, and most people only see her performance but during de interviews an pre and after dicussion during those episode she told she was enjoying seeing and trying all these colors. I that specific episode she turn a salsa song written by a salsa singer into a metal version and enjoyed every second of it....... You must check this out. She also did a very tender rendition of Lady gaga's Shallow....she just showed every aspect of her range.
Hello Bethany, Greetings from Denmark! A way to get introduce to another great voice and band, and at the same time staying with Floor in her operatic voice, would be to react to: EPICA - Sancta Terra (feat Floor Jansen) Live Retrospect show - ua-cam.com/video/cx22Yuj2nzg/v-deo.html EPICA - Stabat Mater Dolorosa w/Floor Jansen (Retrospect 10th Anniversary DVD I) - ua-cam.com/video/nhtOORYTGx8/v-deo.html The latter was written by Pergolesi just before he died
The thing I think you should know, if you actually ever see this post at all, is that Floor Jansen didn’t begin with classical training. She went to the Rock Academy I believe. Then began her own metal band that did pretty well locally from what I hear. Her big break came with Nightwish and as they say the rest is history after that. But despite not coming from a traditional classically trained background, The Rock Academy trained her in all styles and I think from someone that has been trained in the traditionally classical style of singing, that whatever they do at the Rock Academy is Smart for their singers because it truly allows them to be a great deal more versatile and allows her the ability to learn new styles a great deal more easily and more importantly, apply them into practice.
Floor is a metalhead, she did some opera training but found it restrictive, so she stopped! She isn’t a full blown opera singer, she knows this, but still does a good impression of one 😉
Floor is a true music phenomenon. Not to many people can go from Metal to Opera between shows. Floor does the changes within the same sentences and phrases. 💥💥💥
FLOOR = TENSION! THE HORROR. All kidding aside, it is just a joy to see you react to music. Seeing these videos for the millionth time is made better by your reaction.
I LOVE your open-mindedness and your acknowledgment that each human is different from every other human. That makes SO much more sense than what a bunch of vocal elitists have believed for centuries. Welcome to the Twenty-First Century, everybody! You're only a couple of DECADES late to the party...
For more teachers like you! Some vocal teachers are quite restrictive and the student can be very frustrated, cuz they don't get that sound they want. I'm glad Floor never went into the full classical training, cuz I love all the things that she does and I know if she wanted to dedicate to study classical training she wasn't able to learn the other vocal styles. She always said that she's not an classical singer, cuz she has a very basic classical training, but yet it's quite impressive the ability that she has to blend all the styles seamlessly. It's so sad that people have to be careful about what they say, even though if they are vocal teachers, cuz some crazy fans don't accept that their artists are imperfect in a good way. It's OK not to be perfect about everything, but some people don't accept that!!
I think Floor concurs with your philosophy. She also said that "she studied classical singing, but not to a great extent". I think she found operatic singing too stringent. She likes metal, because there are no rules. Her latest operatic voice can be heard in Shoemaker by Nightwish at the end of the song. And oh, yes she likes to sing Ghost Love Score most.
Excellent commentary. Floor has created some masterclasses on her UA-cam channel and in one of them she talks about the importance of a relaxed jaw. This was an early performance and I imagine she's learned a thing or two during her career. She's my all-time favorite singer. 😊🤘
Voice teacher is the one who's the "mirror" of a singing lesson taking student, letting him/her find out what could be gained by practicing, practicing and practicing....
While on the topic of opera singing. I recommend you check out Jussi Björling (some argue he was the best tenor of all time and Pavarotti's personal go-to for "how it should sound) There is not a lot of video of him but there is a live TV recording of "Till Havs" which is technically "pop music" as it was the theme for a film but he sings it opera style of course.
Speaking of bringing her voice low: She sang alto part in Stabat Mater Dolorosa with Simone Simmons of Epica at their 10-year anniversary concert ua-cam.com/video/nhtOORYTGx8/v-deo.html
You are 100% correct, music is like art... beauty is in the eye of the beholder we all have our own tastes if we all liked the same voice there would only be one singer.....God there is even folk out there who like Bob Dylan lol.
This was the 2nd time she had performed this piece on this same show ("De Tiende van Tijl"), a show where pop/non-classical singers are invited on to sing opera pieces. The First time was on Aug 31, 2010. This rendition was performed about three months after beginning touring with Nightwish some two and a half years after the first performance.

Floor also does this song at a Revamp Concert and the crowd was quiet all the way through. You should react to Floor and Marko sing Ave Maria any song. She also sings O Holy Night in Finnish and I really like the one when she's 6 months pregnant. You should react to her singing Shoemaker she does an operactic part or Ad Astra . Sometimes Ann Wilson of Heart has her lips move once in a while. She only has one year of opera. You should check out her 3 Masterclass on her UA-cam Channel. Let's be clear. Floor is a Rock/Metal singer. She's been practicing that her whole singing life. She's done 1 year of musical theatre and 1 year BelCanto. Don't compare her to pure classical singers, cause she isn't one. It's not a defect, it's an extra!

The arguably best guitarist ever held his guitar 'upside down'. Imagine he was corrected as a kid and as a result would've never reached the level he did.
Floor herself has said this was not up to her standard. The reason I consider her the greatest vocalist of the modern era (and perhaps ever) is related to what you said: She can do everything. She will not match a Netrebko or Fleming in straight-up opera, but the fact that she is competent, while being such a great rock, metal and pop singer, is unique. And almost no opera singer has ever even tried metal.
You can tell she is nervous but still a stellar performance and her portamentos are awesome. You need to listen to Nightwish ‘Poet and the Pendulum’ live at Wembely.
She was kind of young here. For a little more mature Floor you might want to listen to Shoemaker by Nightwish, On her UA-cam channel she gives some "masterclasses" where you'll see her explain some basic techniques. She stresses a relaxed jaw very much.
Hello Bethany. Yes Floor is classical trained but, as she herself once stated, classical singing is not her best / favourite style (even if she does an awesome job every time she performs that way, at least IMO). Since she's a vocal coach too, she uses all the techniques as tools (just as you said in your video) and that's why her voice's nicknamed the "Swiss Army Knife of the metal scene". If you are interested in Marko's voice, I suggest to start from "Ever Dream" Wacken 2013 (as a "WOW!" appetizer), then please try "Romanticide" (still Wacken) as a main dish, (garnished with a jaw-dropping glissando) and keep "The islander" live at Tampere for a sweet aftertaste... Do you want two birds with one stone? Marko + Floor: "Yours is an empty hope" (Little challenge for you here: guess who is doing THAT...😜😜😜) Marko + Tarja (First singer): "Phantom of the Opera, Nightwish version" End of an Era tour (another challenge: don't fall off ofyour chair!) Floor never claims to be an opera singer. She only uses some of the techniques to give her additional choices and colors to enhance and express her own vocal ability and storytelling. Floor refers to herself as "A vocal technique nerd".
I think you would like to react to Epica ft Floor Jansen - Stabat Mater Dolorosa Fun fact this was done during a symphonic metal concert. Or maybe “Sancta Terra” from the same concert
In Floor singing the Lauretta character, my association is opera and while I am not a big fan of opera, there are a few exceptions that I like a lot. Her singing here, I like a lot. In the character in the Phantom duet, is that Christine (I'm not into musical at all), Floor to me also sounds operatic rather than musical. Those are crude, rough stereotypes, and/but in both cases it is either desired or works really very well - when done by her with her voice.
Good for you for doing Floor's Opera piece plus the best Phantom piece so early in the Nightwish/Floor journey . You are now my number one goto for Review/Reactions for Nightwish and Floor . The Gates have opened and the material is vast . For more of this type of sound please try Epica's Sancta Terra featuring Floor Jansen . Quite the duo performance here . Also , quite warming to the soul to see you blush at your "tongue tied" segment during the Review . How real . /Cheers . SRK
As I could not properly filter the word portamento out of Bethany's assessment, I searched, and found Portamento vs Glissando: "portamento [is] a seamless slide between two different notes that doesn't focus on the semi-notes [quarter?] in between. A glissando consists of individual notes, each sounded out distinctly, no matter how quickly they are being played" I must confess here that I now know that what, for decades, I called glissando is actually called portamento. Glissando is a slide on stairs, portamento on a slide.
For their tenth anniversary the Dutch symphonic Metal band Epica gave a concert with a full orchestra and choir on stage with them. They invited Floor Jansen as a guest performer and she and Simone Simons - the female lead singer of Epica and Floor's BFF for years - performed Pergolesi 's "Stabat Mater Dolorosa " in a full classical setting in front of a room of Metalheads. Jittery jaw. "O mio babbino caro" - oh daddy dear. The girl (character of the song) fancies this young man so much that she informs daddy to throw herself off the bridge into the river if daddy doesn't allow her to have her way with him. Think Ponte Vecchio (old bridge) in Firenze (Florence). Jittery jaw seems perfectly fitting the emotions of the girl she portrays, here.
Great reaction. Don't be afraid to express your wise opinion. Well. Take into acount that Floor is by no means a professional Opera singer..... This is more than excelent. Her skills as a singer come from a couple of yers at the Rock Academy, folowed by a year of Music Theatre and a year Opera. Pretty amazing if you ask me.
If you really want to do a Marco one, I’d suggest you go for The Islander (live @ Tampere).. When I started to join the Nightwish Army, that was a song that really suprised me.. I had heard Marco sing before, but this was a whole different story.. And he’s playing regular guitar instead of bass in this one as well, another trick he had up his sleeve that I was not aware of.. ps: He’ll be speaking some Finnish before the song that’s subtitled.. However, during the song he makes another Finnish remark, which is not subtitled.. He says something like: “If I sing the chorus, will you [audience] join me?” 😏

I would suggest watching her masterclass videos on her UA-cam channel. I am not a vocal expert, so I may be totally wrong, but from what she is saying, I suspect that the jaw movement has nothing to do with tension. Also another vocal coach, that is an actual opera singer, whose channel is called Big Brain Singer, is also of the opinion that the jaw moving when using amplification is meaningless and has nothing to do with tension.
For a surprising performance of this song, see the video "Amira Willighagen - O Mio Babbino Caro for English - speaking viewers - UA-cam". This was her audition on Holland's Got Talent.
@@TheVocalyst Your welcome and welldone again. For me they are very uplifting.

Hello Bethany, like an artist that mixes colours and uses different brushes to achieve certain effects on a canvas, Floor is, to me, a perfect example of how she creates colour and
'texture ' with her voice.
She is truly wonderful!
🤗
The song "Shoemaker " from Nightwish ends with Floor singing Operatic.
Floor sang the Vilja Lied from The Merry Widow on Beste Zangers. You might like this aria with a special Floor Metal Sauce poured over it.
For me, Floors Version in my absolutley fav.(After the first time, i see this)i hear many Opera Singer. For me ,Floor is the most emotinal Voice. Ok, only my opinon
Second that, bro 🤩
Absolutely agree. Great comment.
@@jessicakoster2543 oh, ok thx 👍
This show was 'designed' to challenge artists to perform outside of their comfort zone and normal style of performing.
The episode is from 2010 shortly before had a less fortunate time.
Nightwish was not even on the horizon when this aired! The interview was from a show in 2013 (and featured this part)...

what interview do you mean?
I've included the link, you can see the introduction and the aria, notice the dress and hair.
But Floor has performed this several times, maybe that's what's causing our confusion?
Hello from the Netherlands .
Floor Jansen sang an Opera arina in the first episode of Beste zangers 2019 for Henk: Vilia song ( in metal style )
this was the show's first performance and thus the kickoff of the show's 2019 season.
Before this first appearance in the Show, hardly anyone in the Netherlands knew who Floor Jansen was !
not even her fellow singers on the benches !
take a good look at the looks and reactions on the couch in the video.
I have Enjoyed Analysis of Floor's Performance. To Me Floor is the Artist who has worked her Vocal
Instrument to a Level Competence that has Opened Her to the Choices her Mind Applies to the Art of her
Choice at the Time. A "Cadilac" of a Swiss Army Knife of Vocal Talents. Floor is a Personality driven Artist
with a large set of the Highest Quality Talents to pull From. I See in Her Performances with Nightwish that she
is one of the biggest Fan of each member "Artist" of Nightwish and Each Member seems to be Her biggest Fans too.
I think the jaw movement is a stylistic choice 😊 Love the videos.
Check out Stabat Mater delorosa with Simone Simon’s from Epica, Floor on Alto. Ps almost forgot. Sancta Terra.
The Goddess did only 1 year, opera and musicals in school.
She loves the different techniques, not so much opera and musicals except Phantom. 🤩🤩🤩🤩
A way to get introduce to another great voice and band, and at the same time staying with Floor in her operatic voice, would be to react to:
EPICA - Sancta Terra (feat Floor Jansen) Live Retrospect show - ua-cam.com/video/cx22Yuj2nzg/v-deo.html
EPICA - Stabat Mater Dolorosa w/Floor Jansen (Retrospect 10th Anniversary DVD I) - ua-cam.com/video/nhtOORYTGx8/v-deo.html
The latter was written by Pergolesi just before he died
Marko has a fantastic voice. “While your lips are still red” from Wembly 2015 or “The Islander” from Tampere 2015. You will not be disappointed
While on the topic of opera singing. I recommend you check out Jussi Björling (some argue he was the best tenor of all time and Pavarotti's personal go-to for "how it should sound)
There is not a lot of video of him but there is a live TV recording of "Till Havs" which is technically "pop music" as it was the theme for a film but he sings it opera style of course.
Speaking of bringing her voice low: She sang alto part in Stabat Mater Dolorosa with Simone Simmons of Epica at their 10-year anniversary concert

If you like her mix belt then Everdream is the song for you (includes Marko singing).

BS Marcela Bovio

As I could not properly filter the word portamento out of Bethany's assessment, I searched, and found Portamento vs Glissando: "portamento [is] a seamless slide between two different notes that doesn't focus on the semi-notes [quarter?] in between. A glissando consists of individual notes, each sounded out distinctly, no matter how quickly they are being played"
I must confess here that I now know that what, for decades, I called glissando is actually called portamento.

Agree 100%
