Yeah had the same shit done. That when it came to my family I didnt care cause I was in the same boat. I had an afro and I kept it neat and yap yap yap. To the point I asked them are you proud to be this skin? And all of them were in silence because I know deep down and it's sad. They arent. Most black people arent proud to be black they may say it but never show it. Trust me I am a stagehand so almost no one cares about your hair. I am proud of my roots and I love my work. And let me tell you. Had zero people talk about it mostly how did it get to that point. I'm working on my second set and its because my father and to be honest our relationship is eh anyway. I'm not sure even when I move out I'm gonna still talk to my family cause my spirit is wanting something more than a dying atomic family.

I've started locs on myself about a month ago. Been letting them be and do what they want. I already know I'm bound to hear slack from people, especially those in my family, but it's become painfully obvious to me that we live in a country that has systemically placed an intense hatred for blackness into the standards of professionalism and beauty. Black is so powerful. We literally influence the culture that other people follow. White people literally want to look like us. I believe that locs are beautiful and are great roads to self discipline, spirituality, and overall, just a unique lifestyle in general. If other people can't appreciate that, I don't need to be associating with them. Love your locs btw. Just been looking through your vids and they've grown beautifully.

Dude I feel you 100% . I face all kind of back handed comments about my hair. And i just started I’m at the Afro/budding phase where the separation is happening. Genuinely hate my job , but I’m growing my hair for personal reason to increase my confidence and patience and if I get locs that’ll be proof to myself that I truly don’t give a fuck about what people think and I’m comfortable with how I look.

Stay woke brotha! Man it’s crazy how early this type of thing starts too. I’ve been freeforming for about a year and I’m getting them twisted now, and even teachers and students at school keep on warning me: “You’re never gonna find a halfway decent job looking like an unkempt thug” Like seriously? It’s crazy that I can’t just try out a natural look of the culture without looking to fit a certain quota.

Yeah I had about a years worth of growth and my locs were just starting to really get somewhere but I let peer pressure at my job and at home get me to such a low point that I ended up having an anxiety attack and just rushing to the barber to cut them off.
Worst part was when I went to work the next morning everyone's complimenting my haircut and all smiles (saying shit like "oh you look so clean now!"). But I still felt defeated.

For anyone living in NYC, there is a human rights law in effect. It is illegal for any employer or school to discriminate. Other states need to catch up. Today my manager complained my hair was unprofessional because I wore it natural and I need to do something by the end if the week. She complained when I wore weaves too, never satisfied. I printed out the law and will show it to her if she says anything else. It's just hard because standing up in my job can bring retaliation

I just started my lock journey almost a month ago and work at a local grocery store. Thankfully Ive been working there long enough and have established a good relationship with my coworkers that i haven’t had to deal with discrimination at my job, or even in my life but I am very scared of having to deal with it at some point in my loc journey. I’m sorry that you had to deal with all that and I hope you find a good job you enjoy that doesn’t discriminate against you or your locs. Keep up the good work btw I enjoy your videos and it’s been helping me stay motivated 😉

I work at a grocery store too (only for the last week and the next few weeks) and I haven`t had to deal with discrimination in work either but I can sense how customers sometimes look at me like I look unprofessional. My mom also often warns about that and says dreads look unprofessional or make me look like a drug addict. It`s also not just the dreads, I`m not a permanent worker so I don`t wear the grocery store outfit, I just have my "normal" clothes such as Rob Zombie and KoRn shirts, my Rob Zombie shirt has an image of him with yellow eyes edited and a Manson family cross on his forehead, and he has freeform dreadlocks too, but my boss or any of the coworkers haven`t told me not to wear that so I guess that`s okay.
P.S I don`t think Rob Zombie is a real Manson fanatic or anything, neither am I, it`s just horror metal

The thing about the loc journey or growing dreadlocks (freeform) is that it will quickly reveal your self-perception or how you view yourself - and I'm speaking specifically to Black Americans. I said that to say that if you're growing dreads and you already have a piss poor perception of yourself, your loc journey will be full of hardship. But the hardship should be an eye opening experience that will lead you to realize that YOUR life is not about what others think or say about you; it's about what you think, feel, and say about yourself.

Amen! Amen! Amen! If nothing else, you will learn resilience and self-acceptance. I cannot tell you how many people just out and about either smirk, laugh, mock or insult…all people in my community. Yet will have not the balls to say a word to you directly. It also demonstrates the cowardice of our own to not recognize their projections of self non-acceptance.
If its broken in you, don’t expect brokenness this way because its return to sender every time!

Sorry this is a bit late. Around May of 2018 I decided to go freeform on my hair. At first I was happy where my hair was going mainly because it was just a different look for me but when I got back to school is where I started having problems. I thought most of my teachers would get on me for my hair but they actually liked it it was more of the students that got on me. A person who I found a true friend of mine was actually upset with me because my hair was so " unkempt". People told me I should cut the spider webs off my head because I looked totally ridiculous. That one friend one day got so upset when I told her I was keeping my hair that she actually took my head and showed people and told them to tell me that I looked totally ridiculous. After 6 months I decided to get my hair retwisted and once I did that one friend still said she doesn't like short locs. You were right there's always going to be a problem. I'm on my 11th month with my hair and I plan on free forming the rest of the way. Thank you for your videos!!

Yeah I work in corporate America but thankfully I don’t have to deal with too many sly remarks. It’s like you said they just think of you as wild and untamed. I had to just really work that much harder so it didn’t become a problem. That and thankfully I have people of color in my work environment that always have my back when I’m not around. I know initially my family was worried about me getting locks because of the stigma that comes with it, finding jobs, being a target for police, etc. I keep mine pretty clean and they’ve slowly relaxed on them. Mom dukes even oils my scalp from time to time. I think just the fact that I’m self sufficient and able to take care of my own now they trust me and my decisions

Damn bro that's truly deep what you have gone through becuase of your hair and skin tone!! Thank you so much for this video and sharing your experiences and "testimony" on how you overcame the "Bullsh*t"!! I too began my loc journey 1 year and 9 months ago. Now. I am sporting "semi freeform dreads"! I work in CA as a counselor in a hospital! I am a black male!! Some people give me looks and try to treat me like I'm "stupid" or "incompetent" due to my appearance. However, I'm articulate and professional! I have even received positive comments for my dreads by families and clients! I'm in my early 30s now and just like you, I grew tired of living up to everyone's standards...college graduate, always sporting low taper cuts, articulate, professional, etc. However, I felt "stifled" and I choose to "not give a fuck" on what people thought of me anymore! I decided that I wanted to be happy and (emotionally and mentally free)!! I am now in the process of transitioning out of my profession and pursuing other goals because working the 9-5 in a medical/non-profit setting is just "tiring" for me! I realize that I need to work to live and not live to work! I'm more spiritual now (not religious) and more creative!! Thank you for this passionate and deep video bro!! I truly respect your honesty and keeping it real as always! #Oneluv #Keepitloc'd #Respect!!

Nowadays people understand so much better many things: people with different religion, different skin color, different sexuality or even different gender than the 2 we`re used to but it`s really fucked that they still don`t understand people with different hairstyle? Like seriously, it`s 2000s and this shit still happens. I know this video was 2 years ago but the discrimination still happens in 2021
EDIT: Also, I respect that when people don`t cut their hair even if their job, relationship etc. was in danger to end because of that, because even though these things are usually more important than a hairstyle, dreads often aren`t just a hairstyle. This reminds me of a thing I`ve often been thinking, if I found the girl of my dreams and she told me I have to cut my locs or she`s leaving me, what would I say? After thinking a bit I decided, if this ever happens I will say no. My locs are a symbol of my personality. A sign of being different. I`m not the popular or cool dude, I never was, I`m the creep. If she could`t love me as who I am, then she should leave, that wasn`t gonna work anyway.

I appreciate you sharing your story. I apologize for discovering this video late but no matter what, the topics you talked about in this video is still very relevant in 2020. I remember i was working security, originally i worked on weekends so i got away with growing my hair and stuff but then the opportunity came for me to work full time during the week...big mistake. At the time i had the juice box fade going on and I couldn't believe these suckas used to say things like "you getting comments about your hair being too high or your shirt have 3 wrinkles in it. These was black people saying this stuff. Saying u should keep a brush on me and things like that. I was a good officer and people liked me but eventually i cut my hair at 360 waves length. There was people upset about it and show sympathy from other departments but in the security department it was all negativity. Talking about "in order for us to get up in the world we gotta play at it at their (white people) game" eventually a month later i quit in January 2019. All year i experimented with the waves but come december I decided to grow my hair and experiment with locs. I'm still job hopping but i refuse to settle for a company who wants me to conform to what they believe a black man should look like in the workplace. I even have family telling me to cut my hair so i can work. Forget all of that. If a job cant accept all parts of me then its not the perfect job, idc how good the money may seem. I never grew my hair for this amount of time and i want to see how much it'll grow from a personal standpoint. 7 months in and I am still standing beside my morals. Especially during times like these we all can't be silent and get pushed around. I hope you and your fam is staying safe and well. Same goes for everyone in this comment section and to all of your subscribers. I will be doing the same.

Big thing that's helping me right now: Sponge / Nudred method. It keeps the afro in check, makes it looks nice with an undercut or side cut shadow fade, and is super fast and stylish because the hair has a dread effect.
HOWEVER, it got to a point where I don't nudred right now because I just don't feel like doing my hair. So I've just been rocking a small afro and don't give a damn as it's my hair.
But yea, people act that way because people are stupid.
Then again, there are times when I look at a brotha's hair and go myself, "Nigga if that was me, I really do need an undercut or shave of some kind," because some hair really is roach'n.
So, with that being said, some people will judge because they're stupid, and then others will say something because the reality is: Some niggas really do need to get a fresh hair cut!
Also, that black dude who told his supervisor on you was stupid. That made no damn sense. Can't believe that nigga did that. He has no life.
P.S. In this video, your dreadlocs look good.

hey! I started my growing out my hair for about a year, i use to wash my hair everyday and use sponge for curls. but now i want to transition to free form locs, ive stopped using hair product and sponge and for the past months i've embraced the free form path. i only use olive oil on my scalp and i'm about to get caster oil. my real question is how often should i wash my hair per week? how do i transition to free form locs without getting it twisted?

    • @Scrappylocs
      @Scrappylocs  6 років тому +3

nilat so to answer the first part of your question my standard is about once a week depending on your hair type and when you wash, wash with minimal hair manipulation just wash and condition the scalp. As far as transitioning I’d say just lettem be and you’ll find success 💯

Your dreads look wild bro, how u get em to look like dat? Last video they look more tame. I got semi freeforms (towel rub start) too and the only way I manipulate them is tie em up differently makin em sit and curve and grow differently over time. Yours looks like mine with kinks and bends but more drastic. Proper rate dat

EEOC complaint as a last resort and request a staff education session on workplace discrimination. If in a state with the CROWN Act, ask HR to push info within the organization. Bottom line…we can advocate for locs. And if people really wanna act boo boo the fool, document and file a complaint with HR. If the organization wanna get froggy and not support you, file the complaint with the EEOC. However, a request for a training session is the least egregious route and the first step outside of verbally stating to an offender that their behavior is unwanted.
I say this all the time that if my professionalism is predicated on my hair or your opinion of it and not my conduct, one of us is deficiently misinformed about the prospect of a non-discriminatory and non-hostile working environment. I’ll let you decide who’s who in the zoo…
