Hi Sarah. Watching from MO. LOVE watching your videos!! My daughter is married to a Japanese man (and her family lives in Japan). Her in-laws live in Sapporo and she said to let you know that Judah is DEFINITELY going to need some snow boots. She says the weather is similar to Minnesota, cold and snowy. It’s very dangerous to walk around there in the winter without them.
    Sending hugs to you all!❤

The fly traps by Rescue! Called “outdoor fly trap” are PHENOMENAL! We have never had flies the way we have this summer, my husband put those up & within a couple hours the bags were full of hundred of flies!!!! We put them by the horses, dogs, around the house & property! Best thing we’ve done in a long time!!

On our farm (also in Nebraska), we go through the garage door because the flies are not as thick. You will really need to be diligent when the weather cools as they will try hard to get inside. Also, during that time, I vacuum the flies (at the windows) instead of swatting to help with the mess.
It’s so fun to watch you learn the farm/country life. I think God made us to be driven to produce our own.

The best thing that the builder did so I wouldn’t have flies come up through the floor was to place screening under the floor boards. It is wonderful! If you can get up underneath your porch, get your boys to roll screening underneath and nail it tightly.

I can relate to what your dad said about not talking on the train in Japan. When my sister, her husband and I visited their son and his family at a US Naval base near Tokyo, we got so many looks from people when we were on the train. At first, we thought it was because her husband and son are over 6'5". Then we realized it was because we were talking on the train! One of the craziest things we experienced on the trains in Japan were the "pushers", who had the job of pushing as many people as possible into each train car before the doors closed. Ask your dad about it; he probably experienced it himself.

That way you could scoot your table into the corner against the benches and not lose seating, but gain some floor space near your doors? Then you wouldn't have to move your table back and forth during the week, just leave it in one place!

Take some of the under-penning out from under the deck and check under it. If you have something under there get some odor- out or lime to cover it or take it out. Vinegar and dawn in a shallow bowl will kill flies if they land in it. Letting kids get drinks (sweet lemonade, etc) will just draw more flies.

We took off of our bedroom closet doors and hung up curtains. They push nicely to the sides or you can put a long nail or a curtain holder hook inside the closet so you can just grab the curtain and hook it over to get them out of the way. Works really well and you don’t have to see anything when you don’t need to get in there. A tension rod for a shower works well for this. The baskets look really cute though!

A quick bit of information for you regarding the fly traps you have is if you are not wanting the fly's on the deck you need to move the fly trap further from the deck as the solution is what attracts them in. Hi Sarah,
When I go camping that’s what I totally dislike is flies 😤
So I started just putting pine soil in a spray bottle (with very little water added)
And spray it every morning all around doors, the carpet and it truly helps a lot.
(Sometimes throughout the day also) Eew I really don’t like pine sol smell either
but listen I can take it to get rid of the stinkin flies. Lol
Good luck, the soap thing doesn’t work for me neither.
I would definitely go under the deck, explore, and put tons
of lye all over the ground. It could be just damp under there!
I’ll come back later and hit the “like” button, but I don’t wanna be the

I love watching your family grow and seeing your homestead blossom! You inspired me to start a sourdough starter. Can I ask for your recipes? I have been using the recipe you shared from Bread Beckers, and just purchased their Home Ground Flour (waiting for delivery). I would love to start baking bread and bagels when my starter is ready. Thanks and God bless y’all! ❤️❤️

We have a small laundry room, so I decided to put industrial command strips (2 per basket) on the door and found fruit baskets at the farmers market (peaches came in them) We have four baskets on the door. This helps sort all the laundry as it gets put in the laundry room. No hampers, straight to the laundry room and sorted it goes.

Another Thing To Help With The Flies Is To Have Your Husband Move The Grills Away From The Door, Otherwise They Will Still Be Drawn To That Area 💗 I Lived In The Country Also & You Learn Little Tips & Tricks. If You Get A Lot Of Nats In The House Or Around The Door The Cheapest Way To Get Rid Of Them Is To Get A Coke Bottle Or Another Kind. Add Water 1/3 Of The Way, Then Add About 2 Tablespoons Of Dish Soap & Last 2 Tablespoons Of Apple Cider Vinegar. Shake Well (keep the lid) & Set It Away From The Food Like The Top Of The Fridge or Other Side Of The Porch. It starts working right away, every couple of days put the lid on & shake it up so the vinegar smell comes out. You can empty it as often as you like & reuse the same bottle. Make as many or as few as you need, we usually have at least 2 in our kitchen because of the back door. But we had the same problem & once the grill was moved it made a huge difference, because weather you know it or not when you're cooking outside food drops & will even go through the cracks. This also will help with the flies inside. If you see that the soap looks like it's starting to get solid then put the lid on & shake it up. But always rinse the lid because it will attract them. Just try to keep it away from your little love's 💕 outside you can use a tack like w/ the flies & put it on a tree or hang it on the post.

Take some gallon size ziploc bags and fill about 1/4 way and seal them up. Then hang then on your door frames and porch posts. I just use a thumbtack and tack it just above the seal of the bag. I have had the same bag hanging in my garage close to or entry door for probably 5 years. We very rarely get a fly in the house. We live out in the country in Georgia so we have lots of flies and this has really worked well for us.

I’ve heard that cleaning a patio with Pinesol and spraying it around your door frames helps. We tested it because we live in Southern Nevada and have large dogs which means flies during this time of year and we we’re surprised that it worked. We do it at least once a week but sometimes twice a week.

So fun watching your farm grow! You've probably gotten this suggestion, but everyone where we live puts a Ziploc bag filled with water above or beside their barn doors to keep flies at bay. It's something about the reflection I think... Anyway, it does work pretty well. Maybe it would work for your house?

You probably thought of this, but I wonder if your grill has a grease trap and maybe that’s attracting the flys? Also, did the prior owners raise hogs on your farm? They attract flys, of course. I just made my first loaf of sourdough this morning, after making a starter for a week. The bread turned out wonderful, very crusty.

A lifesaver for me in a small space are clear, hanging shoe bags on the back of most doors. You can store toiletries, cleaning supplies, just about anything. And, you could also get a roll-up bamboo shade for the laundry area opening mounted inside the frame or right behind it. You could leave it up most of the time, but be able to close it if you wanted. I'm not trying to mind your business, you're doing better than me with all your space-saving ideas! Just thought this might help a little.

The ones I have are very inexpensive and work phenomenally!

For your laundry area.... maybe try a bathtub/shower tension rod in the opening and a nice fabric shower curtain. No hardware install or sewing required.
