I just spent 26 days in Budapest and as a senior I didn't have to pay for public transportation & just had to show my driver's license. I also loved my visit and hope to go back soon!
I was in Budapest this week actually, i had bought a coffee in the metro-shop and went down. A man with a patch around his arm was on the platform with us and went on with some form of paper in his hands and asked us if we're tourist, to which my gf and i said yes, he later asked if we validated our tickets which we had, but said we had broken a rule about not having open beverages on the metro, and its unfortunately a fine of 12000 Forint (about 30ish Euro) and demanded our ID's or passport. I instantly asked him if he has an official person of the BKK (Budapest Public transport) to which he said yes and held out a card, i asked if i could take a photo of it to which he denied and demanded i pay or police will be called and the fine will be increased too 55.000 Forint. To which i happily agreed and said i can pay them a fine of 55k if needed but i will not pay him anything. Dude started to question why i wanted the police there and when i tried to go to the information booth to let the call the police for me he let me go. What an asshole.
Sorry to hear you had such an encounter, while the behaviour of the inspectors have significantly improved over years, there still are a few who may not communicate properly. The reality is that there is indeed a rule that you cannot use the Public Transports services if you have a Beverage that cannot be re-sealed, like a can of drink opened or something. It's more visible on the front of Buses and at some doors of trams, but can't remember if seeing this at Subway stations on any poster. Because the thing is that at a subway station once you enter you are technically taking the services and hence accepting the terms and conditions... which includes no open beverages that cannot be sealed back... so while yeah this is a rule, the inspector should have communicated this in a better way. I hope the rest of your trip went well though.
@@StuffedCabbageAdventures I got explained by the guy in the infomation booth that the fines basically is if your ticket is validated or not. My trip was however awesome, we really enjoyed our trip there and will probably be visiting Budapest again. We watched alot of your videos beforehand and took alot of good tips from you so thank you!
fantastic idea. And a great way to get an idea about what is going on in Hungarian society, and if there certain things you need to be aware of before visiting. Do keep the news flowing :)
I think the cross fits very well under the statue of liberty! Today, the cross can be the symbol of the Hungarians' struggle for freedom against oppressive external regimes! Even for me, who is not religious, but feels Christian values as the basis of European culture as her own.
Just got back from 3 weeks in Hungary. Had a fantastic time. Your information was very valuable for me being well prepared. Used public transit every day and never paid a forint (I'm over 65). Never a victim of scams and don't feel I overpaid for anything. Keep up the good work. Kosonom.
I live in South Africa and my father and his brother escaped communist Hungary to Switzerland. My mother met him on her travels and they both returned to SA. My sisters and I visited Hungary and Budapest over 20 years ago and we fell in love with the people and the country. The architecture in Budapest far surpasses that of Paris or anywhere else in my opinion. I really hope to come and visit again one day and love watching your content. It is very informative and interesting. I will keep watching so I am prepared for my next visit.
Thank you for all of this information! I find all of your videos are nicely done, always informative and respectful. Wondering if you sell your ‘merch’ in Budapest anywhere, as I will be there in 11 days and would like to bring some home
Hey there! Happy to hear yo find our content interesting and helpful 😊 Unfortunately there is no physical store for our Merch, they are made to order via an online service, so only the online store is where you can order the merch from, they deliver to most major markets globally 😊
Thanks for your warning and infos 👍🏻😉 Everytime when i‘m in Budapest i use only cashless or ATM inside a bank. And for public transport i always use Bolt or the BudapestGo app in combination with simple pay. Till now in the last two years i never had bad storys with scamming or so. Till now 😉 fingers crossed. My next visit will be in February or March.
I think generally if people are "aware" then the chances of getting scammed is luckily not that high (I don't count places that are unrealistically expensive). Looks like you have been aware so far, so while fingers crossed indeed, I believe you will be able to avoid any scam 😊
about 2 months ago I visit Budapest for my first time. During my 4 days stay in the city, I spare 1 evening tried to get to the Citadela and hoped to see a bit of sunset and the night scene of the city from up there, but just realized only when I got to the park there that the fortress was in renovation construction😂So I just went to one of the still opening lookout point in that area instead. I discovered your channel after I tried the 2024 Hungarian Cake I got on St Stephen's day (I have only tried the poppy one) and look for video about it on youtube, and then your shorts about the cake was one of the top result (and that was also the moment I recalled I should have tried both the 2 flavors!!), I subscribed at that time! But that was the last day I stayed in Budapest. I am looking forward to visit again in the future!
Wow, you found us via the Shorts? 😊 Thanks for checking out our other content 😊 Btw, even though the citadella itself is closed I still love the views you get from the many lookout spots, its very nice 😊
As an American atheist, nothing more disheartening than as a youth pledging my allegiance to a country under God (and yes I am aware of the history behind this)
Here, in the US, we are mostly taking crosses off things. You’ve told us your opinion, but you’ve not explained why they’re doing it so why is it being put there? What’s the reasoning behind it from the person who or entity that’s doing it then we can decide whether, we think it’s a good idea or not. By the way, we are going to be visiting in the spring. Can’t wait. Your videos have been very informative and helpful. Thank you.
When I saw your preview about this show I assumed it was about the Liberty Statue. It will be interesting to see more reactions to the cross being placed there. The scam part was interesting. I expected it to be about the bar scams on Vaci utca. 😂
I discovered your channel and have been going through your catalog of videos. They are all excellent! As far as the cross on the monument goes, my father-in-law was from Eger and so my wife has many relatives in Hungary, one of which is a priest that we go back and visit every year or two (we live in Canada). From an outsiders perspective, it seems the Catholic Church is a huge part of Hungary's identity/DNA, and I would hate to see that ignored. Perhaps there may be a better symbol to use on statue to convey this. Religion is always controversial.... Keep up the good work.
Thanks! Indeed, Hungary's culture has a deep connection with Christianity and Christian Values. Like in all honesty, if as a reverse they would remove the cross from the hands of the Angel on top of the column at Heroes Square, I would be also mad about that 😊
A lot of ex communist countries are searching for "new gods". Instead of having Lenins picture in government buildings they have now the presidents photographies. Instead of Marx statues they now have crosses. As you said: nothing against anything religious, but I feel that everything has it's place and crosses or whatever else putting in places where they shouldnt beling feels forced. Here in Serbia eere build a lot, and I mean A LOT of crosses in many entrances of villages and towns. To me, temoving everything sovialist can be bad too because it's part of history and particulary in Serbia there were many Partisans who fought afainst the occupators and some of them are still heroes, objectively speaking. Removing their statues and putting there crosses feels distasteful. So basically, I think I know how you feel :)
Yeah, removing and erasing the past and just replacing it with something different isn't the right way to go. Luckily a lot of communist era items/statues have been placed into Museums here or the Memento park, but I am kind of sad that the Park is located so far from the city, it feels like it is hidden away...
Yeah, as a Hungarian, I do not agree with the cross. They are already forcing religion way too much, and this is the cherry on top. I really love how the statue looks, and this is going to be such a gimmick in my opinion. 🥲 I had no idea bout the BKK scam though, never seen it before.

these videos are nice as they can be useful for not only tourists but also for expats that live in Budapest. Nice work as always!
Thank you so much, glad you found it interesting 😊

When I was in Budapest in 1997 and then again in 2002 the public transit was amazing. Great city to get around via transit, walk, etc.
Also, yes I enjoyed the episode. My Mom did leave Hungary during the revolution and was settled in Canada (from Austria).

great job chap .
Thanks dear
I agree that a cross has no business being added to a monument completely unrelated to religion.
I was in Budapest recently and the Heroes Square statue was also in renovation. :)
Yeah, but luckily so far it looks like there will be no major change to that 😊

Yeah, unfortunately Vaci utca restaurants and bars are "fishy" and everyone here knows it, doesn't make it into the news 😅
