I am not an amateur radio operator. But, I was left a Yaesu FT-710 aess to check out for problems. The owner did not want to mail it back to Yaesu for service if the radio was not malfunctioning. I found nothing wrong with him and have tried many times to return the radio by contacting him. I have had no response. Come 3 January 2024, I guess it is mine since I have had it 10 months. I was setting it up with your instructions to monitor the digital modes. Even without a license, monitouring the digital traffic is rather fascinating. WSPR is especially fascinating. Of course, I can not transmit. But, receiving signals from Australia is fascinating! I have also been listening to the shortwave broadcasts from around the world. I have no idea why the radio was abandoned. However, it really is a fascinating device. I may get my amateur radio license or sell it. My art of conversation is heavily lacking. Thus, perhaps getting my license may not be the way to go. But, I am monitouring and enjoying it.
Shortwave listening is how many hams got started. Listen for a time and you'll know more about radio, antennas and propagation than most new hams who fast-tracked getting their licenses by memorizing exam questions and answers. If you do get your license there are lots of things to do in ham radio that doesn't require having casual conversations. You can make worldwide contacts and earn awards using the digital modes on HF without having to say a word. In the VHF/UHF realm there are APRS (text messaging and beaconing) and Winlink (email over radio.) Or maybe you'll prefer designing, building and experimenting with antennas or building your own equipment and accessories from kits or from scratch. Then there's contesting where you just make fast, bare-bones contacts exchanging only required information like callsigns, locations and signal reports. They call ham radio the hobby of a thousand hobbies.
I've tried all I know, and when I switch mode to Data-U, it is in red background on the screen, not blue. Can you tell me what I am missing? Thank you to anyone for a response. Jim
@@KD9ZHF You use the USB port and an old computer. You do some com port setup and you are set. I monitor FT8Call a lot. I am unlicensed, thus can not transmit.
Do you have a video of what it looks like, and how you can operate it on the PC screen please? I've had a licence for over fifty years but not been really active since the late eighties. I'm finding your videos very interesting, as although I have kept up with the technology over the last thirty years, I've never connected radios to a PC, other than to program 100's them, both analog and digital. Thanks for the uploads.
@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones That's not a link to Yaesu. If this document was official from Yaesu, why is it not on their website? Where did it come from?
*WARNING* This is bad instructions & will cause QRM every time a PC starts up. Never set RPPT to RTS or DTR! *Only ever set RPPT to DAKY*, the Yaesu default. If you set it to anything else, FT710 will automatically transmit each time the computer boots up. This is because during boot up, the process called POST (power on self test) goes through all I/O devices and resets them. So for all the serial UARTs connected, this including USB, it will reset RTS & DTR which in turn causes any connected Yaesu transceiver to transmit.
Thank you. I am now another notch higher on the learning curve. Clear and precise.

You seem very articulate my friend.
I like a chat on the radio , but the majority is just an exchange of call signs and signal reports.
Great video! Would you please post a link to the Yaesu technical bulletin? The Facebook link you have given does not work.

My computer and radio are communicating, but WSJT won't decode anything.
